Lions Clubs International Foundation Supporting Refugees in

Jordan and Lebanon Sept. 23rd 2015

An international refugee crisis is unfolding before our eyes.Hundreds of thousands of men, women and children from Syriaand parts of Iraq flee violence in their homeland, seeking safetyin Europe.

Many European nations have agreed to take in refugees, but somegovernments are not equipped to handle the massive influx ofpeople – most carrying with them what’s left of their worldlygoods in one or two suitcases. International aid organisationshave responded.

Along with federal governments, agencies such as UnitedNations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is taking thelead, setting up refugee camps and organising aid and support.Lions Clubs International is providing assistance as well.

Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has provided grantsto support refugee camps in Jordan and Lebanon. Refugeesarrived in Europe following exhausting journeys from Syria andother troubled countries. At the 2015 International Convention inHonolulu, we honoured Save The Children with ourHumanitarian Award, providing US$250,000 specifically forrefugee camps inside Syria.

International President Yamada has challenged Lions in allcountries that have taken in refugees to contact their local andfederal government to offer assistance.

IP Yamada has also challenged Lions in other nations to contactLions in the countries hosting refugees. There may beopportunities to provide support through international jointservice projects.

Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) is acceptingdonations to a designated fund. Send your donation to yournearest Lions Club who will forward your donation to theirDistrict Cabinet Treasurer for banking into the LCIF account.100% of every donated dollar goes in Grants to Lions Clubs at thecoal-face helping the refugees to rebuild their lives.

A solution to the Syrian refugee situation falls upon governmentsaround the world to solve through diplomatic measures andmutual cooperation. Until a solution is found, Lions are focusedon the displaced refugees and how we, as Lions, can help providebasic necessities and bring dignity to those in need. – Nigel Jeny,Board Trustee, Lions Clubs International Foundation

Nikitha's Academic JourneyAs most members will be aware, Moorabbin Lions have beensupporting Indian Student Nikitha Noronha who is studying atChrist University in Bangalore, Karnataka, India.

Founded in 1969, Christ University is managed by the priests of Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), the first indigenousSyrian Catholic religious congregation in India. The college was granted university status in 2008.

Nikitha keeps our club regularly informed on her progress. “Theatre practices had kept me completely occupied. Allperformances just got done yesterday, and I am so relieved now. Classes for my third semester will end on the 28th of thismonth. And I have my ViVa dates from the 29th to the 1st; followed by my exams from the 6th to the 19th of October.”

“This semester has been extremely hectic and has left all of us a little hazed out. However my Mid Semester Marks wereuploaded four days ago – covering Indian Literatures (In Translation,) Introduction to Post Colonial Studies, World Literatures,Theatre In Practice, and Critical Aesthetics.”

“Also with the performance of the play my End Semester Exam for the paper Theatre In Practice has been completed. The playwe performed was Shanti, Shanti, It’s a War by Ramu Ramanathan - it's a War (1993) is a musical spoof of the ‘Mahabharata’.

“This mythological text plays with issues of identity, power, duty, free will and desire. Along with humour, the play alsoincorporates strands of feminism. Hence it has been a great experience working on this play. I played the role of the FairyGodmother and Gandhari – the mother of the Kauravas.”

“As part of my third CIA Submissions I found myself involved in very different and interesting projects. As part of WorldLiteratures we were divided into groups and asked to capture sounds of different parts of the city making it into a narrative andan exhibition was organised where the focus was mainly these sounds. The entire room was darkened and different booths wereset-up with the city skyline as the background where people could go and listen to these sounds. The part of the city that ourteam focused on was Frazer Town. And we focused on Multi-Culturalism in Frazer Town as our theme.”

“For my Monologue in the Theatre Paper I performed the Character of aperson with Schizophrenia. That too was an extremely challenging one. Also I have to start working on my dissertation and continue mypreparation for N.E.T Exams (National Entrance Test). College re-openson the 2nd of November, so I now have very little time on hand toprepare for it.“
