Movement and TransformationCindy Rella, a Movement and Transformational Coach and former Australian Karateand Boxing Champion was an inspirational guest speaker at our recent recent dinnermeeting. Cindy is a unique young woman who, when told that she is unable toachieve something, sets out to prove that with determination and hard work that shecan achieve anything. As a result she has achieved many amazing goals including winning a Karate WorldChampionship nine months after major hip surgery along, and other National andInternational Titles along the way.

She overcame her fear of water to became an Ironman, qualifying and racing the HalfIronman World Championship and has also spent time as a model and an actress.Cindy believes that the body is an amazing machine if we keep it well oiled, thechances of it breaking down will be reduced, and she is passionate about guidingothers to improve their mobility, movement and mental health. Her presentationcentred on her passion for movement, not so much as a coach, but as an ageingmember of the community. “I don't consider myself as being old, I think of myself asa young girl with wrinkles!”

Cindy was a sprinter for twenty years and she then became a movement coach, andis now an integrated transformational coach. “ Transformation is not about image, its about everything as a whole, its the way we think about ourselves, the way wemove and eventually the way we look.”

She said that she qualified through the university of life – “I may not have certificatesbut I wear the scars mentally and physically which qualify me to guide others.”

Cindy said that she'd always always had the innate ability to understand the body andwhat it goes through. “When I became injured I would work out ways to get aroundthe injury.”

Her proudest moment was in 2005 when Cindy won a Karate World Championshipnine months after major hip surgery, “I was told I would never compete again, but Iknew my body and I knew what it was capable of.”

Eight years ago she suffered a training accident and shattered her knee. However she decided against having a knee replacement. “I'm now 45, and so with my resilience and knowledge I have not had a knee replacement, I move pain free and became a Pro. Boxer.”

“I'm here to talk about movement as we go through the years – I've seen manyathletes and others into their 80's still competing and having having a wonderfullife.” She said that more young people are developing degenerative issues muchmore associated with 70 and 80 year old's because of a sedentary lifestyle. Withoutmovement we are shortening our lives. We don't need to exercise hard, we need toexercise in a smarter way.

MOORABBIN CELEBRATES 55TH CHARTER ANNIVERSARY Cont..….and a credit to its members, both past and present. Just to put this into historicalperspective…the Moorabbin Lions was formed in 1963. That was the same yearthat:JFK was assassinated and Martin Luther King delivered his ‘I have a dream’speech.” Among other notable events in 1963 Cerise recalled included The Soviet Unionlaunching the first woman into space, Kodak introduced the instamatic camera, thefirst successful lung transplant was performed and a new drug called Valium cameonto the market. The Beatles released a new single called ‘I Want To Hold YourHand,’ and the first episode of Dr Who was broadcast…but personal computersand mobile phones were still very much science fiction. “On a personal note, 1963was a big year for me – I had just mastered the art of walking and was stringingtwo-word sentences together!”“Ever since that year, Moorabbin Lions has been an important part of our localhistory. I’d like to make special mention of John Nankervis who is I believe oursole-surviving Charter Member. Unfortunately John couldn’t make it today due toill health but it’s wonderful that’s he’s still around and we wish him a swiftrecovery. I feel very privileged to be able to play a small part in this club’s historyand long may it continue.” DIARY DATESDIARY DATES
