With meagre opportunitiesin the labour market, the ideaof being your own boss is be-coming a more attractive optionfor many university graduatesand young professionals.Surveys by the regions largestuniversity, the University of theWest Indies, show that while 90percent of its own graduatesfind employment, many find
jobs that are not necessarilyfinancially fulfilling.
And, according to Presidentof the Young EntrepreneursAssociation (YEA), StephenSpence many are unhappy intheir jobs. You want to be able to dowhat you love, encouragesSpence. And, having your own
business provides that opportu-nity.And, its not very hard to startyour own business in Jamaica, the young entrepreneur says.According to the 2010 DoingBusiness survey by the WorldBank, Jamaica is ranked 19thout of 183 countries in theworld when it comes to starting-up a business.
Although the current eco-nomic climate may seem
daunting for young professionalswanting to establish businesses,Spence says there is no bettertime than now to start-up.What we are facing right now isa cycle and you want to positionyourself in such a way so thatwhen things get better you cancapitalize on the opportunities,he says. In times like thesesome assets are more easily ac-quired because they are beingsold for less than their actualvalue and you can fetch an evenbetter value when the climateimproves.
