Question:The new flood lights at the Point Mugu main

entry point guard station are blinding! As soon asyou turn from the stop sign and head towards theentrance point at night, you are immediately blindedand literally cannot see where you’re going, and I’mafraid that that may cause someone to drive rightinto the security guard standing there accidentally. Can they either turn the lights down a bit, or pointthem downward more and not have it facing rightat the drivers as you’re driving in so that it doesn’tblind us as we come in?

Answer:As always, thanks for raising the question. The lights were installed to improve both safety

and security in the vicinity of the gate. Prior toinstalling the lights, visibility was extremely poorfor motorists, pedestrians and the gate guards. Thelights are facing predominantly outward to provideincreased visibility for our gate guards without il-luminating them too much for any threats that couldbe approaching from outside the base.I drive through that gate regularly and have not

really been bothered by the lights, but I can see yourpoint. Accordingly, we will reassess the exact angleof the lights and adjust them to minimize the impacton approaching drivers while still meeting all of ourother objectives. Thanks again for the input.

Why areMain Gate guard station lights so bright?

MemorialDay is a time for us as a nationto pause and remember thosewho paid thecost for our freedom. In the military com-munity, we know that for each gravemark-er of a brave Sailor, Soldier, Airman orMarine there is a family left behind.Whereare these families? How are they? How dothey move forward from such a loss? Canyou move forward?Surviving the loss of a service member

thrusts family into a new world. There ismuch to do, decisions to be made, emo-tions, loss, not tomentionweeding throughthemaze of survivor benefits. How do youeven start? How do you heal? How do youregroup and build a new life? What do you say to a fellow spouse who

lost their service member? What are theirneeds? What happens to them, where dothey go? What are their benefits? Whatabout the kids? How do we supportthem? In the Feb. 18 issue of The Lighthouse,

I wrote about two Army widows, LaNitaHerlem and Deb Petty. Both women losttheir husbands, killed in action in Iraq. Inthe months since I met these ladies, I have

learned so much about their journeythrough grief, anger, rebuilding, honoringtheir service member and even joy.I am thrilled to take this week’s column

to reintroduce you toDeb andLaNita andto announce their new initiative. Deb andLaNita are bound together by not onlytheir husbands’ command, but their lossand their journey to building their new life. Now, together they are launching an Inter-net talk show, Real Widows…, a show by,about and for their fellowmilitary widowsand widowers.RealWidows…will launch onBlogTalk

Radio on June 9. Their show is a place toconnect with other widows and widowers, learn from each other, share experiencesand gain valuable support and informa-tion.Now if you think this show is going to

be a “sad” show or boring as subject-mat-ter experts droneonabout survivor benefits, well, you couldn’t be more off the mark.Deb and LaNita are spitfires.”They arehonest about their lives, painfully so attimes. They are quick to laugh, very candidand at times downright ornery. And, theyare compassionate. You will find a friendwho cares in these women and a commit-ment to honor their service members by“living.”Widows and widowers are dispersed

across the country. Many move back tohometowns, and that can leave them feelingisolated. RealWidows can offer a place forwidows and widowers to connect, honortheir loss, find understanding and compas-sion, and find hope.I want to invite you to support them and

their show. Check out their broadcasts(www.blogtalkradio.com/realwidows), join

their Facebook page (www.facebook.com/realwidows). Follow themon twitter (www.twitter.com/realwidows). Youmay think itdoesn’t pertain to you, but you will learnmuch about yourself and the needs of ourfellow military spouses, our sisters, whohave paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Smoke started to fill the air and flameserupted one block away from the NavalMobile Construction Battalion (NMCB)5CampKrutke compound inAfghanistanonMay 17. A supply yard at CampLeath-erneck had unexpectedly burst into flamesand was burning everything in its path.As the wind intensified, the fire grew

larger with everyminute. Crews from bothLeatherneck and Camp Bastion workedtogether to suppress the flames that lastedinto the next morning.NMCB5 had been enjoying a scheduled

day off from their six-day work week be-fore the chaos ensued. All NMCB 5 Sea-bees understood the urgency of the situ-ation and were eager to do their part tohelp.“It was an intense fire,” said Utilities-

man 1st Class (SCW) Nicholas Morgan,a Seabee attached to NMCB 5.To fight a fire with limited resources is

a challenge by itself, but the situation be-came a greater challenge when a wall ofsand descended uponCampLeatherneck. It was the ultimate of challenges: Howcan a unit move critical equipment to helpfight a fire when visibility is at its worst? With the sandstorm came stronger

winds. Everyone worried that it would beimpossible to prevent the fire from reach-ing the fuel farm, located just across thestreet from the supply yard that was al-ready engulfed in flames.“It was definitely hot,” Morgan said.

“When the wind would change, you couldfeel the heat. It felt like gas being throwndirectly into the fire.”Morgan and his crew worked together

to coordinate the movement of watertrucks moving in and out of the area toassist other commands to battle the fire.NMCB 5’s Alfa Company played an

extremely important role to help keep thefire contained. Comprised of mainlyequipment operators and constructionmechanics, they staged equipment, sup-plied water trucks, operated bulldozersandmade sure proper resources were usedeffectively to fight the flames.

“It was hectic at first, as emergencysituations always tend to be,” said Lt. j.g.Darren Jacques, the NMCB 5 Alfa Com-pany commander. “However, it was re-ally amazing to see how quickly we fellinto a battle rhythm. We became very ef-fective once our roles were clearly laid outand everyone knew exactly what their jobwas.”

Alfa Company Seabees were recalledimmediately after the fire started. Theyoperated bulldozers and other heavyequipment for more than nine hours andcoordinated operations to prevent thespread of the flames. From the perspective of Equipment

Operator 2nd Class (SCW) Steven Peeler,“It was awesome.”

“I was totally ecstatic just to be outthere as a helping hand doing what Icould to help,” he said.Lt. Cmdr. Marcus Williamson, the

NMCB 5 operations officer, comment-ed, “I’m proud of the great job all theSeabees did. It was definitely a team ef-fort, [NMCB 5 got] all the resourcestogether and got them pushed out. [We]saw the Seabees really jump in and ma-jorly contributing.”The fire raged through the night and

into the early morning hours. The Ma-rines, Seabees, British military and con-tractors all worked together to containthe fire, and eventually, everyone re-turned to their respective camps.“Living in California, we always see

fires,” said the Alfa Company com-mander. “But never quite like this.”While the extent of damage is uncer-

tain at this point, the fire served as aneye-opening experience to all com-mands. The dry environment, limitedwater supply and proximity of lots cre-ate a nightmarish threat of fire damage. While fire plans exist on camp, the ex-tent of this destruction could not havebeen readily avoided. As an organiza-tion, we must prepare our equipmentand personnel to manage and respondto inevitable chaos. Fortunately, it iswhat the military does best.

As you entermy home and take off yourshoes, one of the first things you see is abeautiful piece of calligraphy, created byBrother Roy Parker fromMount CalvaryMonastery in Santa Barbara. I have itframed and place strategically next to myfront door, so it is the last thing I see as Ileave my home and go out into theworld. It is titled “The Serenity Prayer,”by Re-

inhold Niebuhr. It has often crossedmymind that guests

to my home must wonder if I am in somesort of recovery group. Many recoverygroups recite this prayer at every supportmeeting. I am not in a recovery group, butI find this prayer to be an important partof my own spiritual journey and forma-tion.Letme share it with you in case you have

not seen it before, or need to be remindedof it, as I often do.

The Serenity PrayerGod give us the serenity to accept what

cannot be changed,Courage to change what can be

changed,And wisdom to distinguish the one from

the other.Living one day at a time;Enjoying one moment at a time as the

pathway to peace,Taking as God does, the world as it is,Not as I would have it,Trusting that God will make all things

right if I surrender to the divine will.—Reinhold Niebuhr

This prayer, I believe, is inspired byMat-thew 6:33-34, which is one of my favoritepassages in the Bible and the lyrics to myfavorite song, “Seek Ye First.” It reads asfollows:

“But strive first for the kingdom of Godand his righteousness, and all these thingswill be given to you as well. So do not wor-ry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bringworries of its own. Today’s trouble is enoughfor today.”

Many of us consider such wisdom ashighly idealistic for our everyday lives. Our lives are very full with concerns andwork that involve planning for deadlinesand long-range goals. This is true at workand at home. Personally, I am continu-ally planning for upcoming events andfeel challenged to develop programs thatmeet the expectations of God, others andmyself.I am often busy in a good way, but very

frequently I am busy in a manner that isnot good for my soul. Seeking God firstin everything and not worrying abouttomorrow is not easy. It is, nevertheless, necessary if I want to alleviate internalstress. When we seek God and His righteous-

ness, we take the time to choose to see lifein God’s perspective. We take time to restand be with God instead of always doingthings for God. It is taking time to acceptGod’s current blessings as enough for to-

day, therefore keeping the Sabbath holy.God is the source of our future, our

dreams and all the elements of our lives. We often strive so hard to change our livesand the world around us for the better, that many of us take little time to rest inthe arms of the creator — the very onewho holds our destiny and wants to em-power us to receive His many blessings.God knows that we are not in control ofour ultimate destiny, but He does still al-low us to make choices along the jour-ney.One day while I was in high school, I

had a conversation with one of my teach-ers in the hallway. I told him that I wasworried about my upcoming SAT test forcollege admission. He then told me some-thing that I didn’t want to hear. He toldme not to worry. He said that in 10 years,I will find that my scores on the SAT willhave had little influence on what I wasdoing in my life and what I had accom-plished; I discovered that he was right.I had been hoping to get into Cornell

University for hotel management and didnot. Instead, I was accepted into anothergreat hotel management school at theUniversity of Nevada-Las Vegas. Oncethere, I changed majors from hotel man-agement to history, in preparation forseminary at Fuller; this exceeded my ex-pectations and fit me perfectly.I have had towork very hard to get what

I have achieved inmy life, but I have foundthat the things I stressed so much aboutactually had little influence on the fulfill-ment of my dreams andmy personal hap-piness. My disappointments turned outto be blessings.God was in control of my destiny and

ultimately knew where my heart wouldtake me. My worries as a teenager wereabout things that had little to do with mycurrent serenity. They held no power overwhat I am presently doing with my lifenow at the age of 41. There are very fewof my childhood dreams that are yet tobe fulfilled. None of these dreams werea result of worrying, but were instead giftsfromGod that were given to me when myefforts were held in a balanced perspectiveof who was really in control. When I seek God first in my life,

through my time and the intentions ofmy heart, I have the wisdom to know thedifference between what I can change andI need to accept. This, I believe, is thepathway to peace.

‘Serenity Prayer’ teaches us a pathway to peace

How many days until the last day ofschool?Ask that to your school-age child and

I’m sure they will be quick to answer.Summer is on the horizon. This may

mean day trips to the beach, water fun, staying up late, sleeping in, summercamps or family vacations. It is no doubtthat these are wonderful things to lookforward to. However, the school year willbegin again in the fall, and studentsshould be prepared.According to Johns Hopkins Univer-

sity, students suffer learning loss duringthe summer months, also known as “thesummer slide.”A typical student will loseabout one month of learning, with dis-advantaged and struggling students los-ing even more.To ensure your student is prepared to

return to school, a summer reading pro-gram can act as a bridge between schoolyears. High school students in honors andAdvanced Placement classes may nothave an option. Summer reading is typi-cally assigned, with an assignment duethe first day of class. However, all other

students will also benefit greatly by tak-ing advantage of the summer months, free from full-time school, and loggingsome reading hours. In addition to programs possibly of-

fered by your child’s schools, local librar-ies offer summer reading programs. En-couraging children to log reading hours, number of pages or books read, theseprograms keep children interested inlearning. Summer reading program par-ticipants check in regularly and earn in-

centives for their reading accomplish-ments. Offering these programs in alibrary gives children access to a wideselection of reading choices. An enthusiastic approach to reading

will encourage a lifelong love of reading.Public libraries will often have storyhours, literacy activities, arts and craftsand special events. Participating in theseofferings will allow children to see read-ing not as a school assignment, but as anopportunity to experience and learnabout wonderful new adventures. If students suffer learning loss during

the summer, it is important to know whatthey will gain from a reading program. The School Library Journal reports that“about 33 percent of summer readingparticipants were more likely to readabove grade level, compared to about 18percent of nonparticipants.”Secretary of Education Arne Duncan

has stated, “A key step toward stoppingthe summer slide is the development andlaunch of high-quality programs thattake advantage of time outside the schoolday and year to help children learn, grow,

and develop.”Fortunately, the families of Naval Base

Ventura County have access to a locallibrary summer reading program. The commanding officer of Naval BaseVentura County and two officials fromthe base’s Environmental Division areheading toWashington, D.C., next monthto receive an award from the Chief of Na-val Operations for the unique team ap-proach devised to dredge the Port of Hue-neme.Since 1999, the harbor has not been used

to its full potential because of the accu-mulation of sediment. Because that sedi-ment is contaminated — mostly withpesticides and PCBs — and needed to behauled to a landfill, dredging was cost-prohibitive.The Environmental Division team came

up with a solution that involved severalagencies, and the five-year project theydevised was completed in July 2009, re-storing the harbor to full navigability.“The pooling of resources and leverag-

ing of each agency’s strengths allowed theproject to finally succeed,” states the 2009Secretary of Defense Environmental Res-toration Team Award. The project called for dredging the entire

harbor but disposing the sediment into a“confined aquatic disposal” (CAD) sitecell constructed below the Navy portionof the harbor. The CAD was dug out ofclean sand that was deposited on the se-verely eroded Hueneme Beach.Once the contaminants were placed

within the CAD, it was capped with 10feet of sand and 3 feet of rock to protectit from erosion caused by prop wash.Computer models showed this processwould keep the contaminants isolatedfrom the environment for at least 8,000years.Bottom line: 240,000 cubic meters of

contaminated sediments could be dug upfrom the harbor floor and buried under-water as opposed to being hauled to anonshore landfill, significantly reducingcosts. The team also negotiated funding ar-

rangements with the OxnardHarbor Dis-trict. The district paid 50 percent of thecapital cost to install the CAD and will

pay 100 percent of the cost of monitoringit on a long-term basis.A large share of the dredging costs was

paid by the Army Corps of Engineers, asper a 1959 agreement. The corps paid 81percent and the Navy paid 19 percent forareas dredged within the harbor’s naviga-tion channel. In the end, the Navy’s share of the $14

million project was $5.8 million. The project also required involvement

on the part of the California Environmen-tal Protection Agency, the Naval FacilitiesEngineering commands in both SanDiegoand Washington, the Navy InstallationsCommand and the project consultant, allof which had to be coordinated by theenvironmental team.

“We’re very happy about the award,”said Steve Granade, one of the projectmanagers who will be heading to Wash-ington along with Capt. Jim McHugh, commanding officer, NBVC, and DanShide, manager of the Environmental Di-vision. “It’s nice to be recognized by one’speers.”The project has already been recognized

nationally, winning the 2009 FacilitiesEngineering Award from the AmericanAssociation of Port Authorities.U.S. Rep. Lois Capps has also praised

the project, calling it “a model worthy ofduplication.”The Defense Department award recog-

nized how ground-breaking the projectwas.“From an engineering perspective, the

Port of Hueneme dredging and CAD cellproject required a great deal of technicalinnovation,” the award states. “Construct-ing a CAD cell measuring 350 by 550 feetat the mud line and extending to a depthof -85 mean lower low water (MLLW) inthe center of an active harbor providedseveral design challenges to the team.”Engineering was just one aspect of the

innovation this project required, the awardstates. The project also showed innovationfrom the standpoints of contracting andadministration.Others involved in the project who will

be traveling to Washington are KristinaMadali of Naval Facilities EngineeringCommand Southwest; Kyriakos P. Pago-nis, Oxnard Harbor District representa-tive; and consultants Jack Malone andSteve Cappellino of ANCHOR QEALP.

Port dredging project earns environmental award

While a hydraulic dredger could be used to dig up clean sand to create the confined aquaticdisposal (CAD) cell, the more precise budget dredger was needed to dig up contaminatedsediment. Here, the budget dredger Vulcan takes advantage of Wharf 5 being vacant forthe day. The Vulcan used a 23 cubic meter bucket and achieved a dredging rate of 3,000cubic meters per day.

A total of 33,000 cubic meters of armor rock was placed on a clean sand cap atop the CADcell. Computer modeling determined that the cap would isolate the contaminated sedimentfrom the environment for at least 8,000 years. Here, a bulldozer pushes the rock over theside of the barge and onto the sand cap. The old school method of casting a lead line wasused to ensure the armor stone achieved a uniform minimum thickness of 3 feet.

Environmental Divisionhonored for unique teamapproach that got the jobdone affordably

From an engineeringperspective, the Portof Hueneme dredgingand CAD cell projectrequired a greatdeal of technicalinnovation.

Late in her pregnancy, Equip-ment Operator 2nd Class SaraStarberg of the 31st Naval Con-struction Regiment is still takinga fitness class.Every Thursday at 7 a.m., she’s

at the Bee-Fit Wellness Center atNaval Base Ventura County PortHueneme, working with stabilityballs, resistance bands andweights to get a full body work-out that she says leaves her ener-gized and feeling healthy.Just a fewweeks ago, she didn’t

have that option.Starberg is taking a class that

fitness instructor Kristen Reneeset up on March 1 so that preg-nant Sailors could get more of aworkout than the simple “Go fora walk” many of them felt wasthe only alternative physicaltraining available to them.

“There aren’t a lot of optionsfor pregnant women in theNavy,”Starberg said. “Most battalionsjust tell you to go do whateveryou want. I wanted to do morethan just walk on a track. I want-ed a real workout that wouldmake it easier to lose the weightafterwards.”Starberg, 27, says she can feel

the difference. Her back hurts lessthan it didwhen shewas pregnantwith her son, Milo, now 2, andshe feels she has more energy.Renee, who has worked with

pregnant women for about fiveyears, developed a class that of-fers full range-of-motion exer-cises but that can be individual-ized for each woman. Basic rulesare no exercises on the back orstomach, and no exercises thatget the heart rate above 140.Wa-ter breaks are longer and morefrequent.Other than that, Renee follows

a routine that can be adapted forany woman depending on what’scomfortable. The class is free, and a medical

release is required. Three womenare currently enrolled.“It’s almost like private train-

ing,” Renee said. “I stay in con-

stant communication with theclients.”Spouses can also come, “if

they’re supportive,” Renee said. One woman recently brought hermother, who was in town visit-ing.Starberg said the program has

been especially helpful to her be-cause she’s fighting gestationaldiabetes.“The more workouts, the bet-

ter,” she said. Will she miss the class once the

baby comes?Starberg already has plans:The YogaMamas class is every

Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. at the Bee-Fit Center.

It was cold, wet, muddy, slippery, slimyand sometimes just downright nasty. In other words, it was perfect.Nearly 400 people – twice the number

as last year – competed in theMay 15MudRun, put on by the Naval ConstructionTraining Center, which constructs thecourse, and Morale, Welfare and Recre-ation, which organizes the event. This is the fourth year of theMudRun,

which is open to the public and drew about250 civilians.“We were very pleased with the record

turnout,” said MWR Athletics DirectorKent Blankenship. “The coursewas tough-er this year, but I believe folks had a betterchallenge. I heard a lot of people say,‘We’ll see you next year!’”Because of the number of participants,

the race was divided into three waves – 29and younger, 30 to 39 and 40 and over. The winning time was 32 minutes, 18 sec-onds; last year’s was 26 minutes, 48 sec-onds.“Overall times were six to sevenminutes

slower because the course was tougher,”Blankenship said.Wayne Leonardi, 31, of Ventura, came

in first among the men; Blesie Bray, 39,of Port Hueneme, came in first among thewomen with a time of 40:33. For finalresults, see Eternaltiming.com.The race started off with a two-mile run

next to the perimeter of Naval Base Ven-tura County, Port Hueneme. The coursethen swerved into a large training areawhere NCTC had dug trenches in theshape of the letters, “NCTC.” Hills roseup in themiddle of those trenches, forcingrunners to splash or swim through pools, then scramble up and over dirt mounds, then swim again.“That’s what made the course tougher,”

Blankenship said. “There was more waterin the trenches, and the hills were higherand closer together. Last year there wasmore space, but this year it was bam, bam, bam.”There was also a tire obstacle course, a

wooden wall to climb over and a ropecrossing.

The rope proved the most difficult forAlison Kusay, who ran the course withher husband, BUCN JakeKusay of NavalMobile Construction Battalion 3.“For me, it was having hill after hill,”

Jake Kusay said. Why did they decide to run it?“To beat each other,” Alison replied. She won, not only scoring a better time

than her husband but also every otherwoman who competed except Bray.Sarah Vazquez had hoped to run with

her husband, Gabriel, but theUnderwaterTraining Constructionman with NMCB5 deployed earlier than they had antici-pated. He is now in Afghanistan.“I was running in honor of him,” she

said.

400 slog through annual Mud Run

A dozen seventh- and eighth-gradersfromRobert J. Frank Intermediate Schoolin Oxnard ran the obstacle course portionof theMay 15MudRun after most of theadults were finished.“It was a wonderful experience,” said

teacher Greg Brisbine, who came up withthe idea of having the students partici-pate.Base representatives took part in a

health fair at the school last year, andwhen Brisbine heard about theMudRun,he realized it was an ideal tie-in with theGovernor’s Challenge, which promotesphysical activity in students. He was proud of how well the students

did.“They all did a wonderful job,” he said,

“and all of them had a lot of fun.”Amanda Haskell, athletics manager of

Morale,Welfare andRecreation, said she’seager to have the teenagers try again nextyear.“Several of the seventh-graders said

they want to come back and do the fullrun as well as the course,” she said. “So Ithink it went really well.”

Students give ittheir best try

Stephen Hulsey, 68, of Los Angeles, the oldest competitor on the course, closes in on theend of the Mud Run. Age isn’t stopping him; the next weekend, he was planning to be inanother mud run scheduled for the San Bernardino area.

Sarah Vazquez rehydrates after completingthe Mud Run. She originally intended to runwith her husband, UTC Gabriel Vazquez, buthe deployed to Afghanistan with NMCB 5earlier than the couple had anticipated.

Record number turnsout for a course that’shillier, wetter than ever

You’re 21 years old, you’re asingle Sailor and you’ve just wona two-minute shopping spree atthe Port Hueneme Commis-sary.Who you gonna call?Mom.That’s exactly what Builder

Constructionman Joel Gracianoof Naval Mobile ConstructionBattalion 3 did when he won theMay 15CommissaryCommandodrawing to see which single Sail-or would get the chance to runthrough the commissary from 9a.m. to 9:02 a.m.May 17, loadinga shopping cart with items thathe could keep for free.Mom, who lives in Sierra Vis-

ta, Ariz., suggested laundry de-tergent.Graciano, who lives in the bar-

racks, bought energy drinks.“I want my Monsters,” said

Graciano, who raced his cartfrom the end of the store straight

to the energy-drink display onAisle 7.According to the rules, he

could buy only two of any item,so hemoved on to sodas andGa-torades.The shopper in him finally

took over, and with about oneminute left, he started pullingbeef from the Meat Depart-ment.“It’s the most expensive thing

in the store,” he explained. Two steaks, two roasts, two of

whatever was next to the roasts-- then it was a skidding slidedown the snack aisle, where hetossed in bags and bags ofchips.“They’re my favorite snack in

the world!” he explained. And then it was over.Graciano estimated his haul at

about $150, but when everythingwas scanned in at the register, ittotaled $201.03 – making Gra-ciano a $100-a-minute shopper.“We’re trying to show the sin-

gle Sailors that shopping here isa lot cheaper than shopping offbase,” explained Claudine Irvine, commissary secretary, addingthat she hopes the Commissary

Commando will become an an-nual event. The meat Graciano bought

won’t go to waste. He said he hasa freezer for what isn’t eaten at aweekend barbecue. He never got to the laundry

detergent, butMom can hold outhope. In addition to everythingthat was in the cart, Graciano leftwith three $25 gift certificates forreturn trips to the commissary.

pen again,” the 11-year congressmansaid. “It was racism and bigotry in itsugliest form. Never again. We must con-tinue to be vigilant.”Faleomavaega rejected the notion of

the United States being a melting pot.

Instead, he said, America is “a brilliantrainbow, with each contributing in hisown distinct way.”Moved by the words of Dr. Martin

Luther King Jr., he choked back tearsas he spoke of his hope for America tobe a “just and equitable place” that ful-fills the reverend’s dream. The theme of this year’s Asian Pa-

cific American Heritage Month is “Di-verse Leadership for a Diverse Work-place,” and other speakers at the eventstressed the importance of that ideal.“Diversity is a real source of strength

for this nation, this Navy and NavalBase Ventura County,” said Capt. TonyEdmonds, chief staff officer of thebase. He noted that more than 10 percent

of the workforce at the base is of AsianPacific American descent.Capt. JohnW. Ailes, commander, Port

Hueneme Division, Naval Surface War-fare Center, also urged the audience tonot only recognize diversity but also to“embrace our oneness.”“Out of many, one,” he said, translat-

ing the motto on the Seal of the UnitedStates, “E pluribus unum.”

the Asian Pacific female is one ofmeekness and docility.“In our culture, we work,” she

said. “Management is so busythey don’t ask what we’re doing. We don’t brag, but we need to.”Becerra herself spent many

years raising her two children be-fore venturing into the workplace. In the mid 1980s, while the fam-ily was stationed in Japan, sheworked at the Navy Exchange, then took a government job as anoffice automation clerk and per-sonnel security specialist. In 1993, the family moved to

U.S. Naval Mobile Construction Bat-talion (NMCB) 40 recently wrapped upits annual battalion level Field TrainingExercise (FTX) at Fort Hunter Liggett’sArmy Combat Training Center. This FTX marks the largest and most

logistically complicated training NMCB40 will see before deploying to Afghani-stan.“The amount of effort and improvement

we had from day one was phenomenal,”said Cmdr. GlennHubbard, commandingofficer, NMCB 40. “I couldn’t be prouderof what this battalion accomplished outthere.”The overall theme of the exercise is still

to test the building and fighting capabili-ties of Seabees in battalion; however, theamount of projects and movements re-quired to accomplish themission hasmul-tiplied.“One of the things that is different about

this field exercise compared to other onesI’ve been on is the amount of movementswe have to execute regarding the mainbody of the battalion,” said Senior ChiefBuilder Al Cadena, operations chief,NMCB40. “Moving 450 people all at onceis not that easy. We have to set up newcamps and break them down and set themback up in a new location, all the whilestaying in a tactical mode.”In the past a battalion would set up at

a logistical staging area and then make amovement once to a forward operatingbase. Now, through the training of the 31st

Seabee Readiness Group, battalions areasked to make multiple movements withtheir main body and air detachment.Overall, there were nine projects the

battalion needed to complete. ChemicalBiological and Radioactive (CBR) timedtesting and mass casualty response sce-narios were spread throughout the ex-

ercise to coincide with the projects.“Building a tower isn’t easy; now

imagine having to stop because of gun-fire or an incoming CBR attack,” saidBuilder Constructionman Matt Jones, observation tower crew. “If this wasn’ta training environment, seeing thesesituations would be gnarly. So I guess

seeing all at once what could possiblybe thrown at us in Afghanistan will pre-pare us better than if our only missionwere just to come up here and build thistower.”Cadena said the FTX “presented us

with scenarios more realistic to what wemight see on deployment.”

Seabees from Naval Mobile Construc-tion Battalion (NMCB) 3 began preparingfor their August field training exercise(FTX) in anticipation of an upcomingAfghanistan deployment by completing acommand post exercise (CPX) 0 April 21at Port Hueneme.AnFTX is a pre-deployment evaluation

of the battalion’s combat and constructionreadiness and capabilities in a contingen-cy scenario.During CPX 0 the Seabees practiced

command post (CP) watch-standing andcommunications procedures and devel-oped skills in using communication equip-ment.By learning these skills, the Seabees en-

sure the clear and concise flow of criticalinformation to and from each CP, allow-ing the chain of command to take theproper actions to understand and react tosituations quickly and efficiently. All four companies in NMCB 3 used

the time to hone in on communicationskills that would be essential on FTX aswell as on deployment to Afghanistan.

“With this beingmy first CPX, I learneda lot about how important and howmucheffort it takes to properly receive andtransmit messages to and from each CPand the command operations center,” saidConstructionMechanic ConstructionmanApprentice Tyler Clark, a new communi-cationwatch-stander fromNMCB3’sAlfacompany.“Even just maintaining the wire com-

munications between the CPs is a constantjob.”Construction Mechanic 2nd Class

(SCW) Jason Zaback taught Clark how

to string communication wire, splice andconnect wire onto connecting posts anduse proper radio etiquette when speakingover the communications equipment.

“We will continue throughout ourhomeport to improve our military skillswith CPX and FTX to ultimately preparefor tasking in Afghanistan, where we willput this training to good use,” said Za-back. “This is also a good time for ourupper chain of command to get to knowwho their communicators will be and passon all the information it takes to be pro-ficient at their job.”

Eleven Seabees fromNavalMobile Con-struction Battalion (NMCB) 3 attendedCounter Improvised Explosive Device(CIED) training at the Point Mugu IEDSimulator Training Facility on April 13.The Seabees are part of NMCB3’s Con-

voy Security Element (CSE) team, and

they were participating in the training inpreparation for a fall deployment to Af-ghanistan.The class is called CIED Awareness.

According to Dennis Nelson, an instruc-tor for the course, this class is IED 101.“The students see how the actual de-

vices [IEDs] are constructed, how they areutilized, how they are placed and learn toread indicators that there is an IED in thearea,” said Nelson. The CIEDModule I course is required

training for all units deploying to theCENTCOM area of responsibility. Ad-ditional modules are provided to com-mands as the need arises to include train-

ing on how to plan a convoy in a hostileor IED environment.Module I of the training consisted of a

classroom and a hands-on portion thatrequired the Seabees to operate in a con-voy as they faced simulated IED explo-sions and enemy gun fire.“I have been stoked all week about this,”

said Builder Constructionman (SCW)Cameron Burrows, NMCB 3 CharlieCompany. “I learned to be more obser-vant, and how to react when we get at-tacked.”During the convoy exercise, the team

was exposed to four simulated IED explo-sions and two simulated attacks from en-

emy combatants. The simulated explosions were created

by a carbon dioxide charge and talcumpowder.“This was a lot more educational than

just being in a classroom,” said Construc-tion Electrician Constructionman KaylieCarmon, NMCB 3 Bravo Company.

Carmon said the course is a great wayto get the CSE team ready for the battal-ion’s Field Training Exercise in August. That exercise is designed to prepare

them for a November deployment to Af-ghanistan, where the team will be facedwith far more challenging scenarios thanwhat was presented in the class.

Radon is a radioactive gas and known human carcinogen

that you cannot see, taste, or smell. Found throughout

the U.S., radon can move up through the ground and

into a home through cracks and holes in the foundation.

Radon can build up to high levels in all types of homes.

Radon can also get into indoor air when released from

tap water as a result of showering, washing dishes, and

other household activities. Compared to radon entering

the home through soil, radon entering the home through

tap water will in most cases be a small source of radon in

indoor air. Breathing air containing radon can lead to lung

cancer. Drinking water containing radon may also cause

increased risk of stomach cancer. If you are concerned

about radon in your home, test the air in your home.

Testing is inexpensive and easy. Fix your home if the level

of radon in your air is 4 picocuries per liter of air (pCi/L)

or higher. There are simple ways to fix a radon problem

that are not too costly. For additional information, call

your State radon program at (800) 745-7236 or call EPA’s

Radon Hotline at (800) SOS-RADON.

Water Quality Data

The following table summarizes drinking water

contaminants detected in the water delivered to NBVC

Port Hueneme and Point Mugu during the 2009 calendar

year. Drinking water, including bottled water, may

reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts

of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does

not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk.

More information about contaminants and potential health

effects can be obtained by calling the EPA’s Safe Drinking

Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791. Unless otherwise noted,

the data presented in these tables is from testing done

January 1 through December 31, 2009. The State requires

that we monitor for certain contaminants less than once

per year because the concentrations of these contaminants

are not expected to vary significantly from year to year.

Some of the data, though representative of water quality,

is more than one year old.

Help when you need it.The Fleet & FamilySupport Center

What do you call a person who contrib-utes time on behalf of all retired servicemembers, their families and survivors?Answer: ARetired Activities Office vol-

unteer.Located within the Port Hueneme Fleet

and Family Support Center, the RetiredActivities Office (RAO) consists of trainedvolunteers who provide retired servicemembers, their families and survivors withinformation and referral assistance. Theyare essentially the link between the localmilitary community and other governmentagencies. Whatever the concern or need, chances are that they have the resourcesto assist.Currently, theRAO is staffed with amix

of former officers and enlisted personnelfrom various branches of the service. Theyare all trained to provide assistance in avariety of areas, including claims for un-paid compensation, survivors benefits, lifeinsurance, assistance in resolving problemswith retirement pay, annuity pay, formerspouse benefits, healthcare, military re-cords and veterans benefits. The RAO also provides referrals to

other agencies and service organizations. The following figures will give you someidea of how hard these volunteers work.In 2009, the RAO processed 1,093 re-

quests for assistance, and the office wasopen 2,770 hours. That means they savedus $25,000, if we assume they were onlypaid $9 per hour! That’s just one of the

wonderful things about volunteers: Theylove what they do, and it definitely showsin the way they help others. It’s fair to say

that they do this for the satisfaction. The office is openMonday through Fri-

day, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Clients can eithermake an appointment by calling 982-1023or just walk in. They have a bimonthlynewsletter that is packed with useful in-formation, and you can see it at http://www.cnic.navy.mil/Ventura/index.htm.Before you spend hours trying to find

retiree information, give the RAO a call. Not only will you save some time, butyou’re sure to get the right answer the firsttime.— Dave Oehldrich is a work and family lifeconsultant with the Fleet & Family SupportCenter. E-mail him at [email protected].
