Lately I’ve been thinking about how to make something new out of something old. I realize that we do it all the time. I do it by simply re-cycling plastic, paper, cardboard and aluminum used every day in my home. I use shoeboxes in the kids’ rooms to store small toys and keep-sakes. Empty gallon milk jugs become water toys. Gerber baby food jars become storage containers for nails and screws of all shapes and sizes. We reuse plastic storage containers from Chick Fil-A and other restaurants for packing lunches for school. In my old neighborhood, a next door neighbor of ours used an old 1930s pedestal bathroom sink, that was once in her house, as a planter in her backyard. My elemen-tary school used old tires from construction vehicles and trucks to build a playground.
Making something new out of something old has many benefits. It helps reduce waste in our landfills. It provides a viable substitute for raw materials for the many products we use every day without deplet-ing our limited natural resources.
The same holds true for the church. We know we need to do something different, that is, make a change, but we don’t want to commit our time and or treasure to the needed change. Or we only want to do small changes; just the minimum is good enough. Or we believe everything is fine the way it is; that we should leave well enough alone.
If we are to be an effective, relevant congregation in 2016 and beyond, we must listen to the world outside the walls of the church. We must be determined to serve, even if this means we must make some funda-mental changes. Even if it means re-organizing our operations, re- considering our assumptions, re-purposing staff and learning how to utilize technology in innovative ways.
“I told them that the hand of my God had been gra-cious upon me, and also the words that the king had spoken to me. Then they said, ‘Let us start building!’ So they committed themselves to the
common good.”(Nehemiah 2:18).
In Christ,
Pastor Scott

Committee Briefs
Thank you to everyone who donated to the annu-
al ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ Letter Carriers’ Food
Drive to benefit the SOS Food Bank that our
church supports. In total, more than 26,000
pounds of food, which amounts to about one
month’s worth of food, was collected for those in
need.
The San Antonio Food Bank provided this cur-
rent list of needed non-perishable food — peanut
butter, cereal, tuna, beans, rice, chili, mac and
cheese, canned stews, canned soups, canned
luncheon meats, full meals in a can or box, and
pop top food items. Donations can be left in the
shopping cart in the hallway near our church of-
fices and we will make sure they get to the SOS
Food Bank in New Braunfels.
Family Promise of Greater New Braunfels is
hosting a summer Flix movie at the Alamo Draft-
house in town. The fundraiser benefits Family
Promise and tickets are $15 each. The movie is

visit the FPGNB website at http://
www.fpgnb.org/.
Mark your calendars for the annual Mission Fair
and Christian Education Rally where you can
learn more about the organizations our church
supports. It will be on Sunday, September 11 be-
fore and after our church services.
The Mission Presbytery Outreach and Justice
Committee is going to Cuba in November and
Madge Bayston, our representative to the com-
mittee, is planning on going too. The NBPC Mis-
sion & Outreach Committee approved a $500
donation from its discretionary fund to aid
Madge in the trip.
Presbyterian Children’s Homes & Services in
San Antonio is in need of welcoming baskets
containing basic articles such as linens, pillows,
and personal items for new residents. The NBPC
Mission & Outreach Committee agreed that it
will donate those items.
Adopt-a-Highway Trash Pickup, August 13 It’s time again to fulfill our Adopt-a-Highway Trash Pickup obligation and we need your help! We are gathering on Saturday, August 13, begin-ning at 7 am (we want to beat some of the heat) in the NBHS parking lot. The more volun-teers the less time we will be out there! Bring leather work gloves, closed-toe shoes, long pants/jeans, and long sleeves. Bottled water is advised too. Safety vests, litter bags, and trash sticks are provided. Let James Lowe know you will be there by emailing him at [email protected] .
