DECEMBER 2017

December is usually the busiest month of the year as we are preparing and planning for the

upcoming holidays and this year is no exception. The magic of the season has certainly arrived

to lift all spirits and warm all hearts around our school. Festive music, decorative artwork and

special classroom and school activities are engaging all active and eager learners at all grade

levels.

Our Grade 7/8 students were very busy all month with many special activities. The band

members were off to their annual music retreat to Jackson’s Point at the beginning of the month

that is planned by the staff and students at Bethune Collegiate. This is a day of learning working

with experienced music professionals from all over Canada and with other schools in our family.

Following that our intermediates had to prepare for the annual Multicultural presentations on

December 4th

. Pictures later in the newsletter will reflect the success of this annual event!

Our annual Christmas concert was held on Thursday, December 14th in our gym involving over

450 of our students!!! As always, it was standing room only!!! We appreciated the support for

Agincourt Community Services and families in need of some Christmas cheer. Canned goods,

new mittens, hats and scarves were brought to the concert. Thank you for supporting our

efforts to make a difference in the life of a child at this most festive of seasons.

Raffle draw tickets were sold at $2.00 each or $5.00 for three tickets for a chance to win one of

the four special gift baskets provided through the efforts of the Lewis staff. The winning tickets

for these baskets were drawn at our Christmas concert and made the evening special for four

lucky families. The money raised will buy an ice cream treat for our students in the last week of

school. As well, under the leadership of Mrs. Wall and Mrs. Kumar, the grade 7/8 students made

Christmas crafts to sell before the concert. Thank you for your support and to our intermediates

for sharing their special skills!

Multicultural Day 2017 Multicultural Day is a day to celebrate the diverse characteristics of places around the world, and

to help our students come to the realization that although we have many differences, there is a

common thread that we all share. This annual event gives our intermediates an opportunity to

ask questions, research and gather information, and to come to conclusions, all while embracing

the interesting aspects of the country of their choice. The students are expected to examine a

country from various perspectives and on a variety of topics in order to become an ‘expert’.

The goal of this project is to consider a country through the lens of the Five Themes of

Geography while using the inquiry process to formulate questions, gather and organize

information, interpret and analyse, evaluate and draw conclusions, and to clearly communicate

all that they have learned. This project was assessed across many areas of the Intermediate

Curriculum in the following ways:

1. Geography – Five Themes of Geography and Inquiry Skills

2. Science – Connections to Geography and Science

3. Reading and Writing – Research skills

4. Oral Communication – Oral presentation

5. Media – Advertising your country to attract visitors

6. Drama – How well you become a character to represent your country

7. Music – Traditional music, instruments, or pop culture

Students had also prepared food items that represented their country and served to visitors in the

gym. Students were scheduled to visit the booths and bought food items to sample. Parents were

also welcomed to visit and enjoy this special day with our intermediates. The morning was

celebrated with a lovely lunch of Greek, Italian and Chinese food served by the teaching staff.

The Information Boards are on display in our lower halls for students and parents to view at their

pleasure. This was an exceptional day of learning.

mommy mommy make a little more…….Kindergartens singing “Christmas Cookies and Holiday

Hearts” attracted all the attention and laughs from our parents.

Followed by “Snowflakes” falling from the sky.

“The Happiest Christmas Tree” by
