Principal’s Corner Happy 2nd Semester!! It’s the end of January and more than half of the school year has come and gone…WOW! We are heading into a busy time of year as we continue to prepare students for State testing (grades 3rd-5th) and mastery of FL Standards (in all grades). Many of our students will begin testing in early April, but the bulk of the testing win-dow will be in May. It is important that these next few months be a time of concentration and hard work. Teachers are working diligently to in-sure that students are prepared and confident as they face upcoming as-sessments. I’m thrilled to announce that our NEW MEDIA FUNITURE arrived this month! The new table and chairs look great… so bright and professional look-ing. I really think many of the boys and girls will love the tall café style ta-bles. More good news to share, our NEW SCIENCE LAB is now up and run-ning. Beginning in February, our goal is for each class to use this Lab for sci-

ence experiments. We greatly appre-ciate Teacher Marcy Grauer and family for set-up and decorations, as well as Clark Orthodontics for donating $1000 for science materials. The Lab pro-motes an engaging, learning environ-ment. Thank you for reading every night!

Fun Run 2019

MINDSPARK MYSTERY LAB!

We are looking forward to a GREAT 2019 Fun Run with the theme, MINDSPARK MYSTERY LAB!! Thanks to the support of our students, parents, and their friends and family, last year’s Fun Run raised over $40 thousand for KLES technology, and we are hoping to exceed our $35 thousand goal again this year as we continue to work to-wards our goal of maintaining and upgrading technology for our students. The excellent Boosterthon staff are amazing at keeping the energy level high, and making fund raising a fabulous experience for everyone! This year, our students will experience a theme com-bining S.T.E.A.M skills (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) with character-building. While they're teaming up with the MindSpark Kids to solve mysteries, our stu-dents will learn five character traits that will help strengthen themselves and our world. The fun begins with a student Pep Rally on February 6th. The KLES Fun Run will be Friday, February 15th. Please come and sup-port our students on the Fun Run Day.

Welcome back to ART: 2019! The first month

is already over!?! Kindergarten and First Grade

students are working on a six-week unit about

the different environments of Africa. Many of

these landscapes should be on display by the

time you read this. Keep an eye out.

Second and Third grade students just finished

making jazz inspired collages in the style of

Romare Bearden.

Fourth and Fifth grade students continue to

learn about Art History. We ended the first se-

mester in the middle of the Middle Ages by

making illuminated manuscript initials, stained

glass windows, and clay gargoyles. The second

semester begins with the works of Leonardo Di

Vinci and other Renaissance Artists.

waaaay ahead with updates. The dates that I

posted don’t match up but the sequencing of

Marvelous Musical Moments

Our new year is off to a very

busy start. The kindergarten is

working very hard on the songs for their patri-

otic program, “Proud to be an American”. This

special annual performance will be presented

for parents on Friday, February 22.

First and second grade students are working

on reading and performing rhythmic notation.

Third, fourth and fifth grade are beginning a

major unit on playing the recorder to apply

their music reading skills and develop the fine

motor skills needed to perform on band and

orchestra instruments in middle school. You

will soon receive an order form if you wish to

order a recorder and book. Both will be used

for 3 years for sev-

eral months so

they are a very

good investment.

Our book fair will run from January

28th through February 1st. Shopping

hours are from 2:50pm-4pm Monday

Physical Education News

Happy New Year! Mrs. Hickman's clas-ses started off 2019 with information on Nutrition and will head into flag football skills toward the end of the month. Ms. Lee’s classes have been working on their basketball skills and will be moving into nutrition in the weeks to come. Ms. Den-nis’s students are finishing up their soccer skills and will also be starting Nutrition lessons toward the end of January. Please continue to encourage your chil-dren to dress for activity AND the weather on Physical Education days. Be sure to la-bel all sweatshirts and jackets so nothing gets lost. Here’s what the Leprechauns have been learning in Guidance during the month of January.

Kindergarten:

Lesson: Getting to Know One Another

In our Guidance class we started a Unit on Diversity &

Inclusion. The lesson focused on engaging students with

one another in order to discover shared interest and charac-

teristics, explore how each person is unique, build a sense

of community within the classroom, and recognize how

each child contributes to and is valued by the community.

During our lesson, we discussed what it means to be a

friend and why it is important to get to know one another.

We engaged in activities that gave everyone a change to

share and learn about one another as the main focus of the

lesson was to get to know one another, become comforta-

ble interacting with unfamiliar peers and discover appro-

priate commonalities, appreciate and learn from diversity,

develop an attitude of inclusion. Feel valued as an individ-

ual and as a member of the group.

How you can help

Ask your child if they greeted anyone when they arrived at

school today and what they said to each other.

Ask your child if they played with anyone new today and

what they did together.

1st & 2nd Grade:

3rd - 5th Grade:

Lesson: Identifying and managing emotions

We discussed the different words to describe different

strength of emotions, how to identify emotions and

healthy ways to manage emotions, and discussed the

physical signals that alert you to emotions.

Emotion regulations is not just about expressing emo-

tions in a socially appropriate manner. It is a process

that involves teaching children to identify emotions,

helping them identify what triggers those emotions,

and teaching them to manage those emotions by them-

selves.

How you can help

When we teach kids that their emotions are valid, we

help them view what they feel as normal and managea-

ble. Modeling appropriate behavior is important during

the childhood years. The best way to teach your child

to react to anger appropriately is to model appropriate

behavior. Evidence suggest that kids pick up our emo-

tions, and that those exposed to many negative emo-

tions are more likely to struggle whereas, kids who

feel safe are more likely to develop and use appropri-

ate emotion regulation skills to deal with difficult feel-

ings.

Help kids manage their emotions begins by:

Validating their emotions and providing an environ-

ment in which they feel safe to express them.

Discussing the physical body signals that alert you to

your emotions. (Example: what physical signals do

you feel when you are scared? Racing heart, sweaty

palms, butterflies in your stomach, etc.)

Discussing healthy management strategies that could

be used to manage intense emotions such as anger and

fear.
