Panama, with the AES project, and El Salvador, with a similar one that is in the pipeline, are really taking the lead in Central America by developing natural gas to fuel power plants.

RISING VACA MUERTA SHALE OUTPUT MAKES ARGENTINA LNG EXPORTERIn early June, Argentina exported its first Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) cargo ever. Government officials and industry players agree that the path forward for monetizing the world’s second-largest shale gas play is almost exclusively an LNG conversation.

CARIBBEAN INVESTMENTSAcross the Caribbean investments in renewable energy is spiking, planning to improve energy resiliency in the face of climate risk. After natural disasters happened in previous years, many Caribbean islands are starting to break dependency on costly fossil fuel imports.

The Dominican Republic announced on July 2018 plans for a large-scale renewable energy tender.

A GROWING ENERGY DEMANDEnergy demand is growing in Latin America. It is a developing region with growing economies and one where energy demand is still tied to economic growth, it is not decoupled from economic growth as in Europe and the US. Electricity demand is growing and the transport sector is seeing massive growth.

UNTAPPED RESOURCESIt has incredible resources for solar, for wind and huge untapped resources for oil and gas – the pre-salt alone could make Brazil one of the three or fourth largest offshore oil producers in the world. I think the region will definitely continue to be dynamic for project development.

70%Panama is working towards an energy mix of 70% renewables.

The El Salvadorian economy has a five year growth rate of 12%.

23%The Central America region scales up clean infrastructure investments in line with its Paris Climate Agreement commitments, installed capacity has grown by 23% in recent years.

COSTA RICAProduces 99% of its electricity from renewable sources.

COLOMBIA sets sights onOctober for first renewable auction.

“The Americas Gas Summit was fantastic! I received a lot of positive feedback. We had in a couple of days: interesting discussions, great networks, everything was fine!”

“There is great potential for Panama to become an energy hub due to our geographical location, the expansion of the Panama Canal and the rapid increase in the use of LNG and the exploitation of conventional and non-conventional gas reserves. Natural gas can become the most important fuel in the years to come and as a transition fuel for renewables the Secretariat Nacional De Energia is inviting International Investors and Developers to attend the co-located Gas, LNG, Power & Renewables Summits in Panama annually to capitalize on the vast opportunities in the energy sectors”.
