A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT: MOBILIZING MEMPHIS WHILE ADVANCING OUR MISSION

DEAR ALUMNI AND FRIENDS,It continually amazes me how many people are willing to step up for a good cause, lead a project to make our community a little better, or lend a hand to help someone in need. Where would a community be without volunteers? Last year over 316,000 people in the Memphis area volunteered. They volunteered an average of 26.5 hours each. That’s 8,364,000 volunteer hours. That’s the equivalent of 4,021 full-time employees giving their time to make a difference. Leadership Memphis alumni are among the most active, passionate and committed volunteers you can find. You are everywhere doing pretty much everything. And you are responsible for engaging others to make a difference, too. But of course, we should expect nothing less from such great alums! On December 31, 2014 Leadership Memphis acquired Volunteer Mid-South, the city’s 40-year-old volunteer center. We have rebranded it Volunteer Memphis. And, we need you to volunteer to help us make Volunteer Memphis a force for even more good – here’s how:

1. Volunteer Opportunities: If you are on the staff, or board of directors, of a nonprofit organization, please make sure they have compelling volunteer opportunities listed on the Volunteer Memphis website. Together, we can increase and help you manage volunteers.

2. Volunteer Profiles: Register and complete a volunteer profile on the Volunteer Memphis website, and encourage friends, family, co-workers and others to do the same. Search and encourage others to search the website for volunteer opportunities.

3. Volunteer Councils: There are 23 companies that are part of the Volunteer Memphis Corporate Volunteer Council and others are welcome. We are also forming volunteer councils for Government, Education and Faith. We want to know if you are interested in any one of these.

Memphis is a special place. In large part, I think, because we are such a giving city. So many give so much time, energy and expertise to others. Leadership Memphis wants to mobilize leaders like you to take Volunteer Memphis and local volunteerism to the next level. If you are ready to step up, please help us as outlined above, or suggest your own way. I’d love to hear from you.

Sincerely,

President/CEO Leadership Memphis

PROGRAMS UPDATE

173 community leaders graduated from the 36th Leadership Memphis class year with an additional group graduating this coming December as part of the Criminal / Juvenile Justice Program; designed to connect and strengthen leaders involved in all aspects of criminal justice. This class year elevated the momentum of community awareness and understanding the impact of leadership training and civic engagement. New friendships were made, ideas sparked, and countless participants took on the responsibility to understand what’s right with Memphis and take on the challenges we face. This year didn’t just focus on the incoming classes, expanding the alumni engagement offerings helped strengthen the relationships between current class members and alumni with hundreds of community leaders in attendance. As Leadership Memphis prepares for its 37th class year beginning in August, a new group of passionate problem solvers will experience the ever-evolving curriculum, bringing a reformed energy and adding collaborative conversations to the over 2,800 Leadership Memphis alumni across the greater Memphis area.

CRIMINAL / JUVENILE JUSTICE: LEADERSHIP MEMPHIS HOSTS AMERICAN LEADERSHIP FORUM

In addition to the American Leadership Forum (ALF) National hosting their Board of Trustee Conference in Memphis, we also debuted our fourth leadership program; Criminal / Juvenile Justice Program. Thanks to these special individuals for helping make this happen (l-r): Harriet Wasserstrum - Retired President, ALF Houston/Gulf Coast Chapter; Josh Spickler - Shelby County Public Defender’s Office; David Williams - President / CEO of Leadership Memphis; and Dana Wilson, Vice President of Bridge Builders

LOOKING BACK AT A “SUCCESSFUL” SUCCESS HIGH SCHOOLS YEAR

12

In 2013, 55 percent of the seniors in Shelby County went on to some kind of formal education. But in a county where about 30 percent of adults have a bachelor’s degree, the challenge is getting more to the starting line and then finding ways to emotionally support them so they finish. Over the past year, SUCCESS High Schools, an action initiative of Leadership Memphis, has seen outstanding growth with strategic partners by infusing the Executive Class in the eight high schools to help prepare students in college and career readiness. A key component of the SUCCESS High Schools Action Initiative is the “Expanding Horizons” College & Career Tours. The purpose of this experience is to provide options, insights and resources that inform the students’ decisions regarding their post-secondary pursuits. The tour season kicks off with summer campus tours for nearly 80 SUCCESS scholars to six universities in the Nashville/

Middle Tennessee area including Austin Peay State, Fisk,Tennessee State, Belmont, Middle Tennessee State & Vanderbilt universities. “Going on the college tours last year with Leadership Memphis was one of my favorite moments being in SUCCESS High Schools. I now feel comfortable with showing my leadership skills. I am a great leader,” said Bettie Elston, a senior at Fairley High School . In the Fall, nearly 350 participants will visit colleges and technical training schools in the Memphis area. Through exposure to the various aspects of collegiate life students are equipped with tools and knowledge for navigating the critical areas of college and career readiness. As a result of the experience students create a future vision for themselves and demonstrate increased confidence and focus as they determine their post-secondary path.

In addition to the partnered with The Memphis Suit Project to provide a new or nearly new suit to fifteen seniors in SUCCESS High Schools. The Memphis Suit Project aims to provide professional attire to deserving individuals who are in need of a business suit. The partnership connection was made during a meeting with Leadership Memphis alum Anthony Flynn (EP 2007) and Gifted Foundation Board Member Will Moore. First Baptist Church Broad supported the efforts by providing space for the young men to meet for their fitting appointment with an experienced tailor. The highlight of the “tailor-made” experience was the young men receiving their custom fitted suit at a business etiquette session; during which they received tips and guidelines on conducting themselves in life & in the workplace. Beyond the forged relationships between students and local leaders, the 2015 Executive Program Riverview-

Kansas Community saw the indelible work Dr. Alvin Harris, Principal of George Washington Carver High School and 2015 Grassroots Alum was doing to advance college and career readiness in his school so with the help from Shelby County Schools and local partners, they were able to build a custom college and career readiness resource room for students at Carver named after Dr. Harris. Leadership Memphis congratulates the class of 2015 graduates at our SUCCESS High Schools-Carver, East, Fairley, Hamilton, Kingsbury, Kirby, Melrose & Trezevant. We salute our SUCCESS scholars who demonstrated perseverance, determination, leadership and service. Leadership Memphis recently announced it has acquired Volunteer Mid-South, a local nonprofit organization that was the face of volunteerism in the greater Memphis area for 40 years. As an action initiative of Leadership Memphis what was known as Volunteer Mid-South is now known as Volunteer Memphis. Leading the action initiative as Director of Volunteer Memphis is Carol Gaudino, who seeks to expand the volunteer landscape in the greater Memphis area and bring regional and national industry professionals in to speak with local organizations on best practices for volunteer recruitment, engagement, and retention. “I’m excited about the evolution of Volunteer Memphis and what that can mean for our community. There is such great opportunity for collaboration with our local and national partners who offer an unmatched blend of ideas, innovation, and expertise, along with a powerful commitment to helping citizens to engage, take action, and solve community problems through volunteer service,” said Gaudino. With the acquisition of Volunteer Mid-South, Leadership Memphis and Volunteer Memphis are the official local affiliate of the national organizations, Points of Light and HandsOn Network. Points of Light was founded by President George H. W. Bush and inspires millions of volunteers annually. The addition of Volunteer Memphis will provide an expanded platform for Leadership Memphis to increase the recruitment, training and connectivity of thousands of volunteers to hundreds of nonprofit organizations that rely on volunteers to do what they do every day in the community. Each year, over 316,000 Memphians volunteer in their community, additionally giving back 25.6 volunteer hours per resident, according to The Corporation for National & Community Service’s Volunteering and Civic Life in America. “I can’t say enough about the great things accomplished by Volunteer Mid-South over their 40 years of distinguished service to the Memphis area, and about the staff, board and volunteers who gave so much of themselves,” President / CEO of Leadership Memphis, David Williams added. “Leadership Memphis is honored to carry the torch forward and continue their legacy into the future.” Volunteer Memphis is continuing to meet with local and national partners to gather input as a way of identifying and prioritizing the ways in which volunteerism should be developed by the initiative.

#FAFSAMEMPHIS: TENNESSEE LEADS IN NATION’S FEDERAL STUDENT AID COMPLETION RATESThanks to a generous grant from The Kresge Foundation, Memphis Talent Dividend sees exponential growth with annual FAFSA Memphis campaign.

The state of Tennessee’s Drive to 55 Initiative and push to improve access to higher education is a national example of “what progress looks like,” according to an analysis of data tracking the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Tennessee had the highest year-over-year hike in FAFSA completion of all fifty states, jumping from 49% in 2014 to over 62% in May 2015. Shelby County saw a similar increase with a completion rate from 55.5% last year to 65.9% as of May 1, 2015. The Volunteer State’s increase accounted for more than 40 percent of the gain in FAFSA completions across the entire country and in Shelby County we saw exponential growth as well; especially during the FAFSA Memphis campaign. Memphis Talent Dividend’s ‘FAFSA Memphis’ is a seasonal promotion focused on helping Shelby County High School seniors and community partners clarify the processes of applying for student financial aid and tackling the challenging FAFSA application. Since financial aid does not have a one-size-fits-all solution, especially for underserved populations with the greatest need, the www.fafsamemphis.com website inspired direction that eased confusion and helped students and families understand financial aid. From January 1 to May 1, 2015, www.fafsamemphis.com drew over 43,000 Memphians to its website boasting a calendar of over 90 FAFSA completion events hosted by community partners, helpful completion tips, and important dates to remember for FAFSA completion. Both Mayor A C Wharton and Mayor Mark Luttrell even declared January as “FAFSA Memphis Month” at a joint press conference to acknowledge the importance of FAFSA completion and college access initiatives. In February, Memphis Talent Dividend and its partners hosted parents, students, and community supporters at G.W. Carver High School to meet with Mike Krause, Executive Director of Drive to 55 Alliance / TN Promise.Mike Krause spoke about the importance of FAFSA completion and how it directly correlates with the state of Tennessee’s TN Promise scholarship. “In Tennessee, if you do not go straight to college after high school, your average yearly income is only $9,000. When Memphis succeeds with college access and attainment, Tennessee succeeds,” said Krause. This campaign would not have been successful without the tireless efforts of Seeding Success and its Collaborative Action Network partners as well as Shelby County Schools and Drive to 55. GRADUATE MEMPHIS: EUGENIA PRICE JOINS GROWING LIST OF GRADUATE MEMPHIS ALUMNIThanks to the Plough Foundation, Graduate Memphis continues to cultivate more adult college graduates

This year, the state of Tennessee launched Tennessee Reconnect, a grant program designed to ease the financial burden of returning to school. The program is a last-dollar grant that will cover all tuition payments and necessary costs for adult learners who attend a Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT). There are currently 27 TCAT campuses in Tennessee. Graduate Memphis has partnered with our local TCAT in order to help them handle the large influx of adult learners. To date, Graduate Memphis has counseled 882 adults who have enrolled for the TN Reconnect grant. The Graduate Memphis advising team also welcomed two new advisors, Vietta O’Bryant and Nedra Bailey, to assist students. While the enrollment deadline has passed for adults seeking the TN Reconnect grant, those who have signed up are urged to complete their FAFSA by June 15 to remain eligible. While the TN Reconnect grant doesn’t cover the costs of attending a non-TCAT school, the GM advising team is available to discuss other options for adults who have not signed up in time or who are looking to pursue different degrees.

Graduate Memphis exists as a free service to Memphis-area adults who seek to go to and complete college or another type of post-secondary education program. It launched in 2012 with the hopes that it would help many of the some 200,000 Memphis adults who began college and never finished. Adult learners face a unique set of circumstances as they return to school as many of them are juggling families, jobs, and other responsibilities. As GM approaches its 3-year anniversary, they’re excited to introduce Eugenia “Jeannie” Price, a May 2015 graduate of the University of Memphis! Jeannie graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Professional Studies with a concentration in Organizational Leadership. She came to the U of M with just 24 credit hours between her and a college degree! Like many adult students, Jeannie worked full-time while also attending classes.

She’s the office manager and patient relations coordinator for the Methodist University Transplant Institute and her long days at work meant even less time to earn her diploma. Another obstacle that faced Jeannie was the financial burden of tuition. Thankfully, her employer helped her to graduate without owing any student loans. “Because completing my degree was so important to me, I gave up weekends, some of my summer, and renewed my relationship with caffeine for a while. It was worth it,” Jeannie remarked. As one of three daughters of educators, she was thankful that her mother could watch her graduate. “Several people said my dad was dancing in heaven that day!” she added. Jeannie acknowledges Graduate Memphis as a program that lent her courage to return to school. “From my initial call to schedule an appointment to the meetings I attended in the beginning of my journey, the support and encouragement was incredible.” Now that she has graduated, she’s hoping to continue her education at graduate school and one day serve as a specialty line administrator or practice administrator at Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare. A self-proclaimed foodie, her ambitions do not end at education: she also aspires to eat at every restaurant (including food trucks!) in the Memphis area. When asked what the first word to cross her mind was upon receiving her diploma, Jeannie replies, “Hallelujah!” Graduate Memphis is generously funded by the Plough Foundation and their College Resource Center is located on the first floor of the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library.

For the sixth straight year in a row, Leadership Memphis hosted high-ranking leaders from Europe in a five-day, four-night overview of Memphis. This event was part of the Marshall Memorial Fellows exchange program of the German Marshall Fund, which allows these individuals to spend 28 days in the US experiencing five different cities. The participants in the program were Rickard Booson, Vice President at Airbus; Adela Conchado, Ph.D Candidate at Universidad Pontificia Comillas (ICAI); Ömer Güler, Vice Consul at Embassy of the Republic of Turkey; Radu Adrian Oprea, President at Young Entrepreneurs Association from the Southeast Region of Romania; and Sinem Taskin, Policy Advisor at Office of the President of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Fellows stayed with host families from April 18-23, which were comprised of Leadership Memphis Alumni and influential members of the community including Dorian Spears, Steve Smart, Regina Walker, Lurene and Chris Kelley, and Barry Yoakum. “The lively exchange of ideas and lifelong relationships are something I look forward to every year. The fellows bring such a fresh perspective, and often see success we may take for granted. It’s one of the highlights of being a LM Alumni,” said Gwyn Fisher, Greater Memphis Regional Director for the State of Tennessee. The Fellows enjoyed an extensive list of activities that focused on civil rights, faith and community, urban-rural relations and insights relating to the professions of the five individuals.
