Prophecy/Eschatology shouldremind us of Christ’s ultimate

victory, not our impending doom

Rather, Eschatology should:• Motivate us to share the Gospel• Invest our treasure in heaven

A Christian understanding ofdeath

What is death?- Cessation of life in our physical bodyMatthew 10:28 “And do not fear those who kill the

body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear himwho can destroy both soul and body in hell.”

- Separation of body and soulEcclesiastes 12:7 “And the dust returns to the earthas it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.”

Page 13: The Last Things: Death & the Intermediate statermbc-media.s3.amazonaws.com/documents/outlines/2012-09-12-th… · 12-09-2012  · death, judgment, and the final destiny of the soul

- A powerful curse - Gal. 3:13 “Christ redeemed usfrom the curse of the law by becoming a curse forus—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who ishanged on a tree”

- Not a cessation of existence but a transition to adifferent kind of existence - James 2:26 “For asthe body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faithapart from works is dead.”

What about the “SecondDeath?”

- Revelation 21:8“!e second death is an endless period of

punishment and of separation from thepresence of God, the finalization of the loststate of the individual who is spirituallydead at the time of physical death.” -Millard Erickson, 365.

What happens during the time between aperson’s death and the Return of Christ?

(The Intermediate state)• Incredibly important when we minister to

the bereaved. Two possible reasons why many Christians

feel inadequate for bereavement ministry:1) Lack of knowledge2) Liberal theology

Views on the Intermediate state

1) Soul sleep2) Purgatory3) Instantaneous resurrection

Views on the Intermediate state

1) Soul sleep- ‘Sleep’ is a common biblical metaphor for deathStephen - Acts 7:60David - Acts 13:36Lazarus - John 11:11Paul uses it 4x in 1 Cor. 15 and 3x in 1 !ess. 4:13-

15.

Views on the Intermediate state

1) Soul sleepProblems:1) Verses that attest to conscious existence after death and

before the resurrection.- Rich man in hell - Luke 16:19-312) Taking “sleep” as purely a literal description3) Unity of the human person - What is the basis of our

identity? If soul sleep, then our body is. !is wouldmean the soul/spirit is synonymous with the body.

2) PurgatoryProblems:1) Where do we start…2) “Clean up” for uncleansed aspects of our life.

“!is is the reason why we posit a purgatory orplace of cleansing.” - !omas Aquinas

What biblical response can we make on this point?Eph. 2:8-93) Source is from 2 Maccabees 12:43-45 (not

canonical Scripture).

“1) Theology is so academic and cerebral that itloses sight of the relational aspects of theChristian faith-aspects, of course, that are ofcentral importance to spirituality.

2) Within the Western academic tradition, theology is seen as a disinterested anddetached discipline, which inevitably leads toa weakening of the link between theology andprayer.”

3) Instantaneous resurrection (theperson is given a glorified bodyimmediately after death)

Problems:- What is the purpose of the resurrection?- Why does Paul tie the glorified body to

the resurrection?

4) Biblical resolutiona. Di"erence between hades and

Gehenna1. Hades is temporary - Matt. 10:282. Gehenna is eternal - Mark 9:43, 483. !e righteous dead do not descend to

hades - Matt. 16:18-19; Acts 2:31 [quotingPs. 16:10].

4) Biblical resolutiona. Di"erence between hades and

Gehenna4. Rather, the righteous, or at least their souls,

are received into paradise - Luke 16:19-31;23:43.

5. Paul equates being absent from the bodywith being present with the Lord - 2 Cor.5:1-10; Phil. 1:19-26.

Why a Final Judgment?

“Since when believers die they pass immediatelyinto the presence of God, and when unbelieversdie they pass into a state of separation from Godand the endurance of punishment, we may wonderwhy God has a time of final judgment establishedat all. Berkhof wisely points out that the finaljudgment is not for the purpose of letting God findout the condition of our hearts or the pattern ofconduct of our lives, for he already knows that inevery detail. Berkhof rather says of the finaljudgment:

Page 26: The Last Things: Death & the Intermediate statermbc-media.s3.amazonaws.com/documents/outlines/2012-09-12-th… · 12-09-2012  · death, judgment, and the final destiny of the soul

It will serve the purpose rather of displaying beforeall rational creatures the declarative glory of Godin a formal, forensic act, which magnifies on theone hand His holiness and righteousness, and onthe other hand, His grace and mercy. Moreover, itshould be borne in mind that the judgment at thelast day will differ from that of the death of eachindividual in more than one respect. It will not besecret, but public; it will not pertain to the soulonly, but also to the body; it will not havereference to a single individual, but to all men.”

Will we recognize people inheaven?

1 Corinthians 13:12 “For now we see in amirror dimly, but then face to face. Now Iknow in part; then I shall know fully, evenas I have been fully known.”

4) Biblical resolutionConclusion: Upon death, believers immediately go

into the presence of Jesus Christ and experienceunspeakable joy whereas unbelievers immediatelygo to hell where they experience torment, misery, and punishment. !e future Resurrection at theSecond Coming will provide believers withglorified bodies (glorification), where unbelieverswill be cast into the lake of fire which will endurefor all of eternity.

Glorification

“We may therefore define glorification as follows:Glorification is the final step in the application ofredemption. It will happen when Christ returnsand raises from the dead the bodies of allbelievers for all time who have died, and reunitesthem with their souls, and changes the bodies ofall believers who remain alive, thereby giving allbelievers at the same time perfect resurrectionbodies like his own.” -– Wayne A Grudem, Systematic theology: An

introduction to biblical doctrine (Grand Rapids:Zondervan, 2004), 828.
