The Larrey Society would like to cordially invite you to The Larrey Lecture 2016
250th Anniversary of the birth of Dominique Jean Larrey
Organised by
Dear Friends,
It is with great pride that I formally announce the inauguration of The Larrey Lecture, which will be held annually as a contribution to the continuous debate on the nation’s health.
This year it has extra special relevance as it also celebrates the 250th anniversary of the birth of Dominique Jean Larrey, the 17th century French military surgeon who fought Napoleon and political bureaucracy to introduce his “flying ambulances” and battleground treatment for wounded soldiers of both sides, an achievement which has since earned him acknowledgement as “the father” of modern day emergency medical services.
It is therefore no coincidence that the presenter of the first Larrey Lecture is Professor Douglas Chamberlain, CBE, KSG, the world famous British cardiologist who founded the first paramedic unit in Europe in 1971 which in turn led to the creation of the paramedic profession and revolutionised pre-hospital clinical care.
The Society is indebted to Professor Chamberlain for his time and encouragement and we are equally grateful to Smartgate Solutions Ltd, sponsors of this event and everyone else who have given their support to make it possible.
I am particularly pleased that part of the proceeds will benefit the work of the Society’s chosen charity, TASC - The Ambulance Services Charity – which provides help for ambulance personnel and their families in times of crisis, bereavement and urgent need.
The launch of The Larrey Lecture is the highlight so far in the Society’s first full year of existence and on behalf of the Board of Directors, key advisers and our growing membership in the UK and around the world, we look forward to welcoming you in July.
Yours sincerely,
David Davis Founder & Chairman, The Larrey Society www.thelarreysociety.org
