Knights of Columbus Blessed Sacrament Clermont, Florida | APRIL 2014 NEWSLETTER 1
Worthy Brothers,
Not long ago a malicious rumor
relative to one of the Council Officers
was thoroughly vetted and proven
erroneous. As Chief Elected Officer
of this Council it was my duty to the
Order to search out and quash the rumor in the best interest of the
Order. It seems that recently some members of the Council may
unwittingly have e breeched decorum.
Chapter XVIII, Misconduct and Malfeasance of Members and
Officers, Section 162.19, Slander, reads: “Making unjust or false
statements, accusations, or personal vilification (emphasis added) of
or against any officer of the Order in his official capacity, suspension
or expulsion.”
This is being called to your attention, not by way of threat, but to
indicate the importance which the Order places upon the restriction of
such conduct. I implore you as Brother Knights as we enter into our
annual election cycle, to restrain from partaking in any vilification of
any member of the Order, regardless of status. Such conduct, being
disrespectful, disruptive, and unmerited, cannot be tolerated. As a
body of Catholic Gentlemen, we are, and should be, held to a higher
standard. I have complete faith in the goodness of my brothers. For
your guidance, Supreme’s guidelines for local elections are published
elsewhere in this newsletter. I urge you to adhere not only to the
letter, but more importantly to the spirit of the guidelines.
RECRUITMENT: Worthy Brothers, while we listen to the Financial
Secretary’s exhortation regarding the reason for the Star Council
Award, let’s keep in mind that the overriding reason for the emphasis
on recruiting is to bring more likeminded brothers into our ranks. It
should be our desire to have relatives, friends, and neighbors, enjoy
with us the satisfaction of the work we do and the family we become.
So, I challenge you – let each brother, THIS WEEK, invite just ONE
relative, friend, or neighbor, to join our ranks. As a further incentive,
each member who brings in an accepted candidate, will receive 1000
VIP points from the Council. These VIP points are redeemable for
gifts from the Knight’s catalog.
PASTA DINNER: April 26th. Save the date; bring a friend.
CORPORATE COMMUNION AND MEMORIAL MASS:
Sunday April 27, 12:00 Noon followed by a light snack in the Social
Hall. We will be dedicating the Memorial Plaque to our fallen
Council brothers.
GOLF: Coming up in May. It is our major charitable Fund raiser.
The committee is working hard. We can help by seeking our
company, merchants we deal with, or other sources to take a
sponsorship. Last year the net was approximately Twelve thousand
dollars. The goal this year is Fifteen. You can help. We need
sponsors.
Lector Series: We will be continuing the History of the Church. As
this first Friday follows the meeting, look for information in a
separate email. Our Lecturer will also be previewing the series at the
upcoming meeting.
General: While the financial strength of the Council remains strong,
our cash operating reserves are below expectations due to the planned
operating fund event, budgeted for February, not taking place. We
will be tightening the belt a notch.
General Welfare: Please pray for the repose of the soul of Eda
Gilligan, the sister of Brother SK Joe Pangia, who passed away
recently and Brother Don Beaudreau Former FS who is fighting
serious illness.
I am pleased to report that Brothers Bob Peraza and Paul Brannigan
are recovering nicely. Please continue to keep them and all the
brothers suffering illness in your thoughts and prayers.God Bless!
VIVAT JESUS!

Guidelines For Local Elections
Rev. February 2013
Section 126 of the Laws of the Knights of Columbus establishes the offices for local councils. Section 128 of the Laws requires local councils to hold annual elections for council officers.
Elections are to be conducted in accordance with Robert’s Rules of Order. Section 162 of the Laws of the Knights of Columbus establishes certain
categories of misconduct that may expose a member to disciplinary action. Section 162(23), set forth below, provides a general rule for the conduct of candidates for council offices.
Section 162: Any member of the Order who after trial, excepting where it is provided that no trial shall be had, shall be found guilty of the
conduct specified in the subdivisions following shall be fined, suspended or expelled as set forth therein, to wit:
Appeals for Political Support
23. Issuing appeals for, or soliciting by virtue of his membership in the Knights of Columbus, aid, or assistance or support by or in behalf of or
announcing candidates for public office, or candidates for office (including delegates to State and Supreme councils) in another society or body or in
the Order; fine, suspension, or expulsion.
Any member who knowingly permits or acquiesces in such appeals, solicitation, etc., shall if elected, be ineligible to hold office.
In order to effectuate this rule and to promote fairness and mutual respect in council elections, the Office of the Supreme Advocate has developed the following guidelines.
General Principle: A candidate for local council office in the Knights of Columbus is expected to conduct himself as a Catholic gentleman. While
he may promote his candidacy by highlighting his own qualifications, he may not comment negatively about any opponent. A candidate is
responsible for any third parties acting on his behalf. All elections must be conducted in a manner that is consistent with the principles of charity,
unity, and fraternity.
A candidate for local council office may:
1. Receive a nominating speech from another member of the council in which the nominating member sets forth the character and qualifications of
the candidate; and
2. Make a brief statement accepting the nomination, in which he states his own qualifications.
A candidate for local council office may not:
1. Use, accept, or receive council funds to support his candidacy in any manner whatsoever;
2. Distribute campaign buttons, t-shirts, pins, hats, bumper stickers, or any other souvenirs or promotional items;
3. Send mailings or e-mails, or use social media to support his candidacy;
4. Arrange or participate in debates with other candidates or their supporters;
5. Campaign or have promotional items in the chambers of any business meeting, or within close proximity to the entrance of any business meeting;
6. Campaign or have promotional items at or outside any religious ceremony;
7. Disseminate any type of derogatory information concerning another candidate; or
8. Hold a fund-raising event to finance his candidacy.
If a candidate or member knowingly and willfully violates these guidelines, he may be subject to disciplinary action.

In Service to
One.
In Service to All.
Worthy Brothers,
Well here we go into another month before you know it this
fraternal year will be over. On another note this council has been
through another Rough episode that has left bad feelings. Over the
years there have been other episodes the situations or reasons may
have been different but the end result has always been the same.
Were there any winners in this last episode? I guess a few maybe,
but losers there were many.
We have brother knights who want to leave the council because of
the discord that has gone on. Also, we are recruiting no new
knights and fund raising is at a minimum. The big losers were the
people who we are here to serve. This is one of the most important
times of the year for our council the golf tournament, the pasta
dinner, the election of officers and the wonderful things that we do
for our parish our community have all suffered because our
attention was else where.
I met years ago with an old knight and his words as I left our
little talk was "Be careful the devil walks among us" . I
shrugged it off as the rambling of an old man but now I may
know what he meant. The devil doesn't like the unity of our
brotherhood because together we work to glorify the Lord.
He constantly temps and tests us looking for ways to drive
wedges between us and pull us apart. In moments of
weakness, he strikes by aligning us against each other. So
please put all of this behind us and let’s get back to doing the
things that our Lord has asked us to do as Knights.
May the good Lord bless and watch over us all as we try to
step forward and start being good CATHOLIC
GENTLEMEN.
Vivat Jesus!

“Focus on Star Council Award”
Brother Knights,
Travel to any state in the USA; to any town blessed with an
active Knights of Columbus council; and attend a regular
council meeting. You will hear the Grand Knight and
Insurance Agent/Advisor mention the Star Council Award.
This is described by Supreme Council as “… the most
prestigious award that a council can achieve.”
This annual award very important for many reasons. Here are
a few:
The award is a measure of our achievements for one
full fraternal year; it is a “yardstick of our
accomplishments.”
There are THREE H-beams that support the Star
Council foundation of benefits of membership in this
organization:
1) Time and treasure we donate to our Church,
community, and various charities. This requirement
is measured by the quality and number of charities
served, and the amount of Brother-hours donated.
2) Constant efforts to increase the amount of time and
treasure we donate by retaining as many current
members
as possible, and increasing the number of new
members admitted during the fraternal year. This
requirement is measured by “net gain in
membership.”
3) #3 – Participation in a variety of insurance programs.
Note that the Knights of Columbus insurance
organization is classified as a “mutual insurance
company.” That means that we policyholders are
part owners of the company. Our insurance programs
are designed to PROTECT and SECURE Brother
Knights and our families. Life and accident policies
are designed to protect us in the event of unfortunate
circumstances, and annuity products are designed to
help plan and implement secured retirement
programs. This requirement measured by “net gain
of insurance members.”
There are THREE months remaining in our fraternal year. We
will discuss the Star Council Award as a group at every
meeting. We will focus on the numbers; define measureable
objectives; and discuss creative ways to achieve those
objectives … and the Star Council Award. We have a
powerful team. Together, we can do it!
Remember, if you have a change of address, a new phone
number, or a new e-mail address, please send an e-mail to me;
[email protected] or write a note and hand it to me at any
Council meeting or event. Please print clearly. Thank you!

Session 3: Persecution - Part 2
This month’s presentation is titled “Persecution - Part II.”
As Tertullian said: “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of
Christians.” The Roman Empire persecuted Christians for
more than 200 years. Instead of disappearing, the Church
grew stronger!
In the third century, Diocletian became Emperor of Rome
and established a new order of government. His
Tetrarchy, consisting of two co-emperors, divides the
empire into two halves - the East and the West.
Diocletian begins to rebuild the crumbling empire and
initially meets with success which includes a campaign to
completely eradicate the Church. Thousands of Christians
are tortured and killed or turned into slaves.
Torn from without and within, the Church is sure to be
torn apart and trampled upon into the dust of history. But
the persecutions ended and the Church rises from ashes
only to be faced with a serious question - how will she
deal with those who gave in during the persecutions and
did not maintain the Faith and are now seeking to rejoin
the community. Should they be readmitted?
Come to the next session and find out during this 50
minute DVD presentation!
These sessions are sponsored by the Knights of Columbus
and are opened to anyone wishing to attend. While it is a
history series, missing a session will not preclude the
benefit from attending a future session. This program has
an imprimatur and the hours can be counted toward your
EMHC/MTS mandate hours.
Brothers,
Do you know your Bible?
The Bible is the story of Salvation History that began in
the Garden of Eden and was fulfilled by the new and
everlasting covenant of Jesus Christ (Eucharistic
Covenant). The study of covenants is one of the
approaches to bible study that helps us grasp the “story”
and helps give a deeper meaning to the relationship
between the Old and New Testaments. Each covenant
provides a basis for the following as God reveals his
“plan” to us incrementally until his Son fulfills the old
testament and directs us toward the new heavens and a
new earth.
There are six primary covenants: Adam; Noah; Abraham;
Moses; David; Jesus.
Over the course of the next six months, we will take 5-10
minutes to discuss each covenant and give some examples
of how they are related to the New Testament fulfillment
of the Old Testament.

Brothers,
The 8th Annual Charity Golf Classic scheduled for Saturday May 17 is
moving along a very fast pace. So far we have been able to get some
sponsorship as well as some great door prizes that will be used for our
famous Chinese Auction (e.g. foursomes at local golf clubs, Disney
tickets, etc.).
We are asking Brother Knights that are not directly involved in the
planning of this Annual Event to make a monetary donation and/or
donate a bottle of liquor (to be used to make up a basket of cheer).
Donations can be made at any of our Council, Assembly, or Golf
Meetings.
At last year’s Charity Golf Classic we had 136 golfers. We are hoping
that this year we can get to 144 golfers which is the maximum for a golf
course. Brother Knights can help out by getting a group of friends
together to play in this year’s Charity Golf Classic.
Golf flyers are available on our Council’s web site.

Brothers,
“Sixteen” is the magic number for star Council. In the latest Membership Message from our Worthy State Deputy, Paul
Koppie, he clearly makes the point that with more members, we can do more to build the Kingdom.
We certainly can make Star Council if each of the 60-80 active members who either assist or make an occasional
meeting just ask ONE family member, friend, neighbor, coworker, to join our ranks and enjoy the family of Knights.
Remember, someone who has been a Knight, but has been inactive more than seven years, is a reactivation and is
considered a new applicant for Award purposes.
Contact Steve Cruz 352 552 1958, [email protected] or myself 352 243 3292 if you need any help.
As a further incentive, each member who brings in an accepted brother, will receive 1000 VIP points from the Council.
These VIP points are redeemable for gifts from the Knight’s catalog, with several items for 1000 points or less.
I urge each of our members to help our organization grow “Ad Majorum Dei Gloria” – the Jesuit motto – For the Greater
Glory of God!

The Prolife Corner:
The focus this month is on two events and both are
opportunities for you and your family to get involved.
First, the 40 Days for Life Campaign is still going and it can
use your help. As I stated last month, the 40 days for Life is a
peaceful prayer vigil outside the Planned Parenthood Abortion
Clinic on 726 Tampa Ave, Orlando. The praying started on
March 5 and runs through April 13th, 2014. We are trying to
get people outside from 7 AM until 7PM. This place is easy to
get to, take the Tampa Ave exit off the 408 and the clinic is
about 200 feet down on the left. Parking is available right
before the clinic on the same side. If you can spare an hour or
two please go there and pray no confrontation! If you want to
schedule your time please call Mary Ann Palmer at, 352-394-
5004, to see what times are not covered. If you want to sign up
for an hour of prayer you can also go to the website 40
Daysforlife.com and look for the calendar of times. You don’t
need an appointed time but we would like to cover all the
hours. I talked to her today and they believe they have saved
some babies while there.
Coming in April 26 at Bishop Moore HS- a 5K Walk/Run for
the Unborn. It’s now called Laps for Life. The Orlando
Diocese Knights are sponsoring this program that we hope
will be an annual event. All Councils are invited to send a
team to walk. It’s the typical pledge event where you raise
money by donation or getting people to pledge based on the
laps you are going to walk. If we have a team to cover the
event hours of 8 AM to 8PM we could divide up the hours you
need to be there or you could elect to spend the whole day.
There will be t-Shirts, drinks, sponsors, kids and adults
involved. I will have signup sheets and info at the April 3rd
meeting. More info at the web site-
[email protected]. We want to raise $45,000 for
three new ultrasound machines to go in pregnancy counseling
centers here in Central Florida. Come out and bring your
family, friends, neighbors.
In closing -a quote from the beloved Pope John Paul II---“
America you are beautiful…and blessed…the ultimate test of
your greatness is the way you treat every human being, but
especially the weakest and defenseless. If you want equal
justice for all and true freedom and lasting peace, then
America, defend life”.

One of our founding goals: to protect
widows
As a member of this council, you know how
important spouses can be to the charitable works of the
Order. If you’re married, your wife is probably involved
in a few of the many events that happen each fraternal
year. This support adds great value and impact to what
a council can achieve.
When the Order was founded in 1882, Father
Michael J. McGivney and the other brave men were
setting out to protect Catholic families, but especially
wives and children. We know today this is done through
our insurance products which are designed with that
goal in mind. One specific policy rider that you may not
know about is called Spousal Waiver of Premium. This
rider is unique to the Knights of Columbus philosophy of
helping our widows.
This rider is available on most permanent and
Discoverer plans purchased at standard rates by a
member and his wife on the same day. When both
spouses apply, the rider provides for waiver of
premiums on the spouse’s contract in the event of the
insured’s death. Best of all, for members and spouses
ages 18 to 60, this waiver can be added for no charge.
The rider stays in effect until the spouse attains age 65
or certain other triggering events occur.
Our products are designed with your needs and
budget in mind. With a solid portfolio of life insurance,
long-term care, disability income and retirement
products, the Knights of Columbus can help you meet all
of your financial goals. To learn more about these
solutions, contact me today.
