MISSIONS

We are excited about growing our investment in the children of Bithlo this new year. The biggest change will be the kicking off of a much needed After School Program. Pastor Brian has come up with the name "Your Bridge." Many of the older children that we support at OCA have little supervision outside the hours of school. In the afternoon they are subject to roaming the neighborhoods. When asked what they do after school the response is usually "just hanging out". Because there are not athletic programs, clubs, band, or other developmental organizations at OCA, we are working to close the gap by meeting those types of development needs with "Your Bridge." Additionally, we plan to offer a comprehensive mentoring program as well as tutoring.

Come meet the students on January 2nd when we will be bringing middle and high school students to spend time on our campus. We will pick them up in Bithlo at 10:00 a.m. and return them at 2:30 p.m. We will provide them lunch. This is our introduction to our after school program for them. We want them to spend time on our campus one day a week to start, hoping that it will end up being a 5 day a week program. But we need your help. A generous donor has supplied us with a very nice bus, "The Beast," located near the pods. However, we are need of a bus driver who has the proper CDL license. "Your Bridge" has applied to IRS for their own 501 (c) (3) not- for profit exemption, we are just using the church's facilities as our host location. This program will be financially supported by donations, sponsorships, and fundraising events. To get started, we can use donations of after-school snacks, and sports equipment. We also would appreciate your financial support, noting our funds are completely separate from our donations to OCA. Most importantly we need volunteers. They fall into several categories: General support/supervision: These people are friendly, outgoing, ready to help. They may do anything from greeting, taking roll, giving directions, or help set up or takedown. Sports and activities: These people are coaches, players, encouragers. They have some skills in tennis, soccer, basketball and flag football. They will help lead and coach sports and outside recreation activities. Skill and crafts: These people have a special interest and enjoy teaching others. This could range from cooking, art, painting, woodworking, sewing and crafts to music, general life skills, mentoring and tutoring. Safety and security: These people are focused on making sure everyone has an enjoyable experience - students and volunteers. They are safety-focused, may demonstrate some basic first aid skills, they are comfortable holding the students to rules and boundaries. They can be firm when needed, but always handle situations in a positive manner. They are conflict resolvers.

Please contact any of the following people if you have any questions: Pastor Brian, Brad Merrell, Liz Whitley, Suzie Caffery, Pastor Patina or Richard Jerman. Again, we are really looking forward to a new year with these children. ~ Liz Whitley & Brad Merrell

January CIRCLE MEETINGS

Meet our new Administrative Assistant

ERIN CAMPBELL

While Erin has been a member here for more than 6 years, she recently joined our staff when Kathy Taylor retired and our Administrative Assistant, Jeanette, moved over to her position as Financial Director. Erin is the friendly face you will see when you walk through the office door.

Although born in Gainesville, this Seminole graduated from Florida State University. One thing most people would be surprised to learn about Erin is that she has a Bachelor’s Degree in Religion.

Erin’s favorite food includes steak and warm apple dumplings with ice cream. One Fine Day is her feel good movie, while Jane the Virgin is her T.V. fix. Perks of Being a Wallflower and Slaughterhouse 5 are her favorite books. Dry and silly humor, the unexpected and her KIDS make her laugh. Speaking of kids, Erin has two youngsters, Ben, who is 11, and Caroline who is 8.

When not working, Erin is busy with her kids, as well as volunteering in their schools, here at church and in the community. Her favorite

causes are anything involving children, especially the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home. If ever she has down-time, you can find Erin reading, sewing or crafting. She likes to travel and her favorite vacation spot is Italy. Her bucket list includes a trip to Greece and to attend a Tudor re-enactment at Hampton Court.

When asked about what is the best thing about First Church, Erin says, the tremendous generosity of our membership and staff is inspiring. I have always LOVED that I feel welcome, wanted and at home in our church. Please welcome ERIN into our church family!!!
