THE KING JOHN SCHOOL

NEWSLETTER

NO:72 DECEMBER 2017

We started auditioning for this production back in July and were overwhelmed with the number of talented students wanting to take part, so much so that we have had to split roles and double the size of the ensemble! Every time I direct at King John I am amazed by how many artistically gifted students we have, whether it’s creating the posters and programmes, taking the publicity pictures, controlling the lighting and sound, assisting in the directing, designing costume or dancing, singing and acting, we are blessed. It is wonderful to see the year groups coming together as a school community to produce the show. The commitment and hard work that goes in to producing an hour and a half’s entertainment is astronomical, and I have been impressed with how profes-sional this year’s cast and crew have been about attending rehearsals, learning lines and helping with the organisation. This is the second time I have directed this particular musical, the first being 8 years ago. It makes me feel very old, especially as one of the students who performed in that version is now a member of staff at this school! She has been using her experience to support and guide the current crop of ‘Crystal’s, Ronnett’s and Chiffon’s’, and like many of the staff at King John has been giving up precious lunchtimes and after schools to help get this production on its feet. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the students’ families that have given support over the past 12 weeks with donations of some of the most bizarre props and costumes, as well as all the help with line learning and lifts to rehearsals. This truly is the most talented bunch of students I have worked with, and as such has made my life a whole lot easier. I am extremely proud of what they have achieved. David Saunders

As we approach the festive period we have had a very busy half term. Most recently I enjoyed watching the school production of The Little Shop of Horrors. It was one of the best shows I have ever seen and everyone who took part, both on and off stage, did an amazing job. We have some very talented students here at The King John School. This year we have seen a huge increase in the number of Year 6 stu-dents requesting The King John School as their choice of secondary school for September 2018. This is a great achievement for the school as we continue on our “outstanding” journey. The school has had a number of successful trips this term, including a trip to Hollywood, Car-diff and Stubbers and trips to the theatre to see various productions including Othello, A Linha Curva, Jekyll & Hyde and the Shakespeare play whose name you should never say! We have had many sporting success in basketball, rugby, football and hockey and King John were crowned Senior District Hockey Champions. I would like to wish Miss Kaminska the very best of luck for her future as she is moving onto pastures new; she will be missed by all. With effect from 1 December 2017 The King John School formally be-came part of the Zenith Multi Academy Trust along with James Hornsby School in Basildon. I will be the CEO of the Trust and in my absence from school Mrs McGauley will be the Head of School. On a final note, I wish you and your families a very happy Christmas and best wishes for the New Year and I look forward to welcoming back the students on 2 January 2018.

SCHOOL NEWS Year 8 students strive for charity success in aid of Havens Hospices Year 8 students at The King John School celebrated their fund-

raising achievements as they presented a cheque to their chosen

charity, Havens Hospices.

The students spent their first year at King John raising funds for

this great cause. Some of their events included a film night, dis-

co, Christmas bazaar, cake sales, raffles, a talent show, competi-

tions and lots more. In addition to this they managed to per-

suade the head of PE Mr Webb to run the London marathon

which he successfully completed in just less than 4 hours.

A fundraising representative from Havens visited the school and

was really impressed by their efforts. Recently, another Havens

representative collected a cheque for the end of year total which

amounted to £2,899!

One of the tutor group’s charity representatives Max Haynes said

“I have really enjoyed being a part of the charity events. I know

that Havens is a really good charity because my sister is disabled

and has visited Little Havens as some of her friends go there and

say it’s a really fun place to be. This is a lot of money and it will

really help people to have a happy life. People do such amazing

things just to help others plus Miss Coulman’s mum is a nurse at

Havens and she has told us all about it”.

Student Voice News October and November have been busy months in preparation for Par-liament Week. All year groups were involved in #UKPW17. The Student Voice Executive Committee organised the activities for the week. On Monday there was a Brexit Debate which was

organised by Sophie Bush in year 10. Students in year 9 and 10 were involved and ran the debate in front of an audi-ence of year 7s to 13s. The judges were Mrs Sheern, Mr Smith, Mr Spencer and Mr Gibbons. The winners were “Remain”. Students prepared well with great speeches and

arguments for and against the motion that Britain should leave the EU. Remain won the argument because of their research on NHS funding. On the Wednesday year 7 and 8 finalists for the Political poetry competition took part in the final, where they read or per-formed their poems on stage for their heads of year: Miss Murray, Mrs Goodwin, Mr Sel-by Knight and Miss Driscoll. The winners were first place: Emily Merrison, second place: Alvin Muzunze, third place: Maizat Mustapha. The Endeav-our Award went to Kurtis Mitchell and the top presenters were Ebun Jawo and Bolaji Oyetunde.

Friday’s Parliament week event was Ques-tion Time with our own Member of Parliament Rebecca Harris. This was a great event where year 11s, year 12s and year 13s presented their questions to Mrs Harris. It was evident that a

great deal was learned about politics and parliament. Students thoroughly enjoyed the week and the student voice com-mittee have already started preparing for next year’s events for parliament week 2018.

Time Machines Well done to all the students from 7-01, 7-02 and 7-11 who presented their time machines. There were some outstanding models (some pictured below) and some amazing speeches to their classmates, even though many of them were quite nerv-ous. This project helped students to consider how they would pre-sent for a specific audience and purpose. They tried to be in-formative and persuasive.

YEAR 7

Stubbers day trip for year 7 On 21 October a select group of 25 year 7 students were invit-ed to complete a day of activities at Stubbers Adventurous Ac-tivity Centre in Upminster. The aim of the day was to encour-age students to work on their leadership, confidence and team work through a range of different activities. Below are two student’s view of the trip: Charlie Rayner - “While we were there we took part in 4 activities which were, lazer tag, high ropes, team challenges and terrain boarding. My personal favourite was the high ropes because it looked scary at first but then when I was on it, I found it ok. I would definite-ly recommend it to anyone because it was so much fun.” Anu Adetunji - “I really enjoyed my experience at Stubbers because I made a lot more friends. The staff were extremely nice to us and made sure we were safe in all the activities we did. We improved our teamwork and sportsmanship skills whilst having fun. Overall it was an excellent trip and I hope to go there again.” In June we do have a residential trip where students will spend a weekend at Stubbers Adventurous Activity Centre. Letters and more details for this trip will be given out after the Christmas Break.

Achievements House winners for half-term: well done to House S who all en-joyed some pizza and a cookies for gaining the most amounts of house points in the first half-term. ATL winners: the tutor group with the best attitude to learning as an overall tutor goes to 7-05. They will receive a prize for all their hard work and positive attitude towards learning. Well done to all tutor groups and students that have won attendance awards and achievement awards. All students and tutors have received certificates to keep in their records.

The book was award-ed winner of the Primary Award and also overall winner of the Reading Zone picture book competition 2017. Part of the prize was for Indiana to meet an author, who had seen her book. This is a great achievement and a huge well done from all of the Year 7 team.

Outstanding Achiever Congratulations to Thomas Davies 7-01 for winning the Jack Petchey Outstand-ing Achiever Award for November. Thomas was nominated by Mrs Ankin, his skills teacher. He was nominated

because he is always hard working, excellent in discussions and always puts his hand up to answer any questions. Thomas has won £250 for skills education. Well done Thomas this is a fantas-tic achievement!

Shoe Box Appeal The shoe box appeal raises money and gifts for a range of un-derprivileged children from all across the world. The charity looks to make sure that no child wakes up on Christmas day without a gift and The King John School has been supporting this charity in filling as many shoe boxes as possible. WELL DONE to ALL of year 7 who managed to provide 55 shoe boxes full of gifts for Christmas to those young children who are less fortunate. Tutor group 7-07 were year 7 top performers with 11 boxes!!!! Pictured below are a group of year 7 students who delivered the shoe boxes to the charity on Friday.

Design & Technology

Design and technology – Textiles Our textiles student are working hard on their controlled as-sessment tasks and have produced a variety of creative fashion items that would enhance any catwalk. Students have shown flair, style, innovation, quality and creative design within their work. Well done to those students who make full use of the extra curricu-lar support offered by the depart-ment.

Engineering Education Scheme Launch at Procat A group of Y12 design and technology students attended the EES launch scheme at Procat in October and excelled by win-ning the team challenge on the day. The Engineering Develop-ment Trust (EDT) is an independent registered charity whose mission is to encourage young people to fulfil their potential through careers in science, technology, engineering and math-ematics (STEM). Established in 1984, the EDT is a leading na-tional provider of work related learning programmes which annually involves over 40,000 students. The Trust aims to inspire and moti-vate young people into choosing a STEM career by giving them the opportunity to ex-perience real life exposure to indus-try, business and higher education. The awareness gained empowers students to make informed choices at key stages of their education.

CHEMISTRY A-Level Chemistry in Action Trip to London The London morning rush hour was fading away as outside the Home Office, groups of young people of all sizes, shapes, ethnicity and fash-ion (with a few grey haired individuals dotted amongst them) were gathering. Was it a protest, a demonstration? No. They were all A-Level Chemistry students waiting for the Chemistry in Action day to begin in the Emmanuel Centre opposite the Home Office. Twenty-one Y12 and Y13 students from The KJS and two staff, were amongst over 700 students that attended. Five lecturers of national and international standing spoke of their research and interest in different pertinent areas of chemistry. We learnt how Queen Eliza-beth’s pale complexion arose from the use of lead compounds while slowly poisoning her system resulting in a loss of teeth and hair. That elements at the nanoscale can be made into devices which can link to the brain. Will this place our amazing brain capacity into future micro-chips? Life as a chemist can take one to Antarctica to study the ice composition or to sample the ocean on one of the scientific ships. Who knows the opportunities that are ahead? Freezing molten choc-olate will make better tasting chocolate. This was trialled with volun-teers from the audience. The result –a definite yes! Chemists are ex-ploring ways to turn humans into walking batteries. Imagine being able to power your mobile from your own body heat! Was the day worthwhile? Students commented “definitely glad that I went”, “learnt so much”, “opened my eyes to what is out there”, “enjoyed making my own way up to London with friends rather than travelling with teachers!” Verdict – yes!

DRAMA MUSIC

On Thursday 2 November, Mr

Richard Meyrick visited the

music department to give a

piano masterclass to six lucky

students. It involved the stu-

dents performing a piece of

music. He would then give

them tips on how to improve

their overall technique.

Richard Meyrick’s aim is to broaden the thinking of young musi-

cians by giving them per-

spectives, goals and tech-

niques to help them pre-

pare their pieces for per-

formance. Richard himself

played a couple of works

and it was obvious that

this immediately inspired

not only the six students

who were chosen to per-

form, but the selected audience members as well.

Rhea Slater, who was in the audience (year 9) describes the after-

noon as an “amazing oppor-

tunity, where students learned

how to enjoy music, rather

than being tested all the time.

It helped us realise how to

make music come alive.”

Laura Payne and Darcie Clay-

ton (year 10), who per-

formed, said the event was

very helpful, as it helped

them to improve in such a

short space of time. He

was also very inspiration-

al.

Bethany Johnson (year 8),

who also performed, said

“I really enjoyed it and it

was really good.”

The Pianoman Masterclass with Richard Meyrick Anti-Bullying Day: Thursday 16 November To support the nationwide initiative the drama department were proud to present 15 different year 9 GCSE performances to the whole of our year 7 for anti-bullying day. They communi-cated the different types of bullying from verbal and physical to cyber bullying, with a clear message on how to handle the situa-tion. The year 9 GCSE students were assessed for their compo-nent one module as they devised and performed their pieces of theatre from scratch. We would like to congratulate all the stu-dents involved, their talents and behaviour were of an excellent standard. Well done to both year 7 and year 9 drama GCSE!

The trip will be available to students across years 7, 8 and 9 students and is open to all abili-ties. We will also hold a reserve list for those students in case of cancellations/illness. The students will be working with top international coaches from the European Netball Association. This exciting initiative offers our enthusiastic netballers at The King John School the opportunity to train with the expert professional coaching staff from the leading teams and associations around the world, with access to top class facilities and accommodation. Students of all abilities are invited to participate in this unique development programme. Each student will not only benefit from the specialist professional coaching and playing opportuni-ties, but also the educational and cultural aspects that a trip to Spain has to offer. We are expecting a very high level of interest in this trip and have therefore invited a representative from the tour company to give a presentation so that questions can be asked. King John School Uniform Standards and Expectations Mr Smith has very kindly reproduced our uniform posters as a reminder emphasizing how we expect our students to dress. We currently have a few who wish to challenge, parents have been in-formed and sanctions issued to repeat offenders. The main concerns at present are to do with footwear and jewellery. Trainer type footwear is not per-mitted unless there is written medical evidence and it has been agreed with their Head of Year.

Students have been reminded that they are only allowed to wear one stud in each earlobe. Students found wearing a stud anywhere else in the ear will be asked to remove it immediately and their expectations card signed.

Parking in School As you are aware we request that parents do not enter the main car park or sixth form cark park on Shipwrights Drive to pick up and drop off students due to health and safety implications. It is apparent that some parents think this rule does not apply to them and continue to arrive extremely early to get a space in the car parks to pick up and drop off their child(ren). I ask you again to please respect our requests to not drive into the main car park or sixth form cark park, to pick up and drop off your child(ren). Please also do not park just outside the main school gate. Only those parents who require disabled access should enter the main car park. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Work Placements - Calling all Parent/Carers. Many of our sixth formers are keen to gain valuable experienc-es in the work place in order to support their university appli-cation and/or apprenticeship/employment pathway. The government has made it much easier for employers to take on sixth formers and with minimum paper work involved. If you or your employer is able to support us in offering a week’s placement for a year 12 or 13 student please contact: Mrs Jeffery on [email protected]
