On Monday 28th of January, 9 students from Year 7 & 8 took part in this year’s Rotary Young Chef Competition for The King John School, in association with the Hadleigh Ro-tary club. All the students submitted mouth-watering menus to get this far in the compe-tition. They worked exceptionally hard in order to plan, prepare and make a three course meal for two people in just two and a half hours. It was a pleasure to watch so many tal-ented young chefs take part. The meals were judged by members of the Hadleigh Rotary club together with members of staff from the school. The contest was particularly close this year and all the students produced at least one outstanding dish. The winner for 2013 was Jennifer Grimble in Year 8 who made mackerel paté with melba toast, chicken in breadcrumbs accompanied with ratatouille and hassleback potatoes followed by mini strawberry shortcakes. Jennifer will now go forward to represent the school and Hadleigh Rotary club in the county final this month. We wish her the best of luck! Congratulations go out to all students who took part - Abigail Abiona, Georgia Robinson, Isaac Clifton, Ellie Lamb, Jake Scott, Megan Green, Callum Alderson and Dan’na Wright. They will all receive prizes for their fantastic achievements. As you can see the standard was very high.

Chefs of the future Many congratulations to Year 11 students Liam Read and Charlotte Crudgington who have been offered unconditional places at Westminster Catering College to become professional chefs. Joshua Clark, Jake Whittaker and Sam Wilton are aiming to continue their catering training too. Good luck to all students who are currently applying for training placements. The King John Catering department are delighted to have played a part in inspiring these young chefs of the future.

Bad Weather This is the time when severe weather may cause problems for teachers and students trying to get into school. Please listen to local radio (BBC Essex and Heart) for up to date news from the school. School closures will be posted on our website by 7.30am www.thekjs.essex.sch.uk. It would be helpful if you did not tele-phone the school directly—the line gets jammed and teachers trying to contact the school cannot get through.

The best possible news this half term is that the local council agreed our plan-ning application to extend the Sixth Form. This will enable more students to continue their education at the school once the leaving age is raised to 17 in

2014. We will keep you up to date with the building progress in future newsletter. I would like to thank those parents that supported the school’s plans and particular thanks to the school’s Governing Body for their unwavering help and support. We could not have done this without them. Although it seems ages since Christmas I would just mention the wonderful Carol Concert which took place just before the end of last term. The students were brilliant and everyone that attended had a perfect evening. Well done to all those that took part. Once again, many students were successful in their early entry exams. Our A*-C Maths re-sults currently stand at 85%, an outstanding achievement. 71% of students have already achieved an A*-C in English and we will be working hard with students over the next few months to further increase results. In order to motivate and encourage Year 11 students in the short time they have left at the school, we are introducing a new scheme which will culminate in the presentation of diplomas to successful students. Full details will be sent to parents shortly. I wish you all an enjoyable break.

88 lucky Year 7s will be going to the Globe Theatre on Monday 25th February. They will be taking a tour of the Globe and learning what life was like in Shakespeare’s times and how and why Sam Wanamaker was inspired to campaign for the mod-ern Globe to be built in tribute to the man who is often considered to be our greatest playwright. They will then take part in a workshop run by Globe actors, to help consolidate their learning about A Midsummer’s Night Dream during the Au-tumn term. The day will be rounded off with a look at the Globe exhibition which is full of interesting facts and information about Shakespeare, his works and his theatre. Mrs Harvey

Year 7 are looking forward to their annual bowling trip to The Kursaal on 14th March. So far, we have around 130 students participating in the trip. It is great to see year 7 having fun and socialising on these evenings out. Staff are also keen to get in-

volved!! Thank you to everyone who is supporting the organisa-tion of the event. See the next newsletter for photos and to see how we got on!

Year 7 & 8 are starting to get excited about our forthcoming trip to Barcelona and the surrounding regions. Great fun will be had enjoying the sights of this beautiful area –keen footballers will enjoy the trip to the Nou Camp stadium; shopping fans will appreciate time to try out their Spanish in the many “tiendas”; and most will love the thrills and spills of Port Aventura! (Staff included!!) We will enjoy putting our language skills into practise, whilst seeing the fantastic culture this re-gion of Spain offers. On Thursday 24th January a group of Year 12 students studying Psychology or Health and Social Care went on an outing to London. During this outing we visited the Tavistock Centre and the Baden Powell House. The Tavistock centre focuses on mental health and the way the mind works. We were given an hour lecture about a developmental approach to understanding autism by Jessica Hobson, who is a senior research fellow. After learning about autism and the way it affects the development of a child, we were given another lecture on Talking Cures, by Dr Sarah Helps, who is a consultant clinical psychologist. We watched a video of a family struggling to cope with their 3 year old son’s behaviour and the therapy they received at the Tavistock Centre. We then had a short journey to Baden Powell House. We were given a lecture by John Clifford about stress and anxiety. John Clifford is a hypnother-apist and he went on to talk about how his job works. We then got involved in a group activity consisting of John Clifford demonstrating hypnotherapy and how we can relax. This outing was very interesting and it will enable us to use the knowledge that we gained from this experience in our further education. The School is very concerned about the safety of the stu-dents on our site. With this in mind we would ask that cars DO NOT DRIVE ONTO THE SCHOOL SITE to drop students off or pick them up. This includes the car park at the Benfleet Road entrance. In future the gate to the Benfleet Road car park will be shut between 3.00pm and 3.45pm. This car park is intended for staff and visitor parking only. A large number of students have to cross this area to get into school and the presence of cars driving through the car park greatly increases the risk to students. Please take notice of the signs on the gateway and drop your children off outside the school site. A small walk up the road can only be good for them!!! Katrina Bentley, Bursar

Borrowing Money

Student Services lend small amounts of money to students in emergencies only i.e. forgotten lunch and/or bus money to get home. A phone call will be made to parents to confirm this is allowed. We would like to remind parents that if your child has borrowed money from Student Services it should be repaid the next day as we only have a small float to lend to students. NB. This facility will be withdrawn from a student who has money outstanding.

Text Messages: Sent to an individual or group of individuals using threatening statements and foul language in order to provoke fear in the recipi-ents.

Picture Messages: Used to make the recipient feel threatened using images

Phone Call Bullying: A method of bullying by telephoning a person and telling them of your intent to hurt them or cause them actual bodily harm. It can also be simply telephoning the person being bullied repeatedly without speaking.

Email Bullying: Sending emails from an unspecified email address or using the email of another person so as to apportion blame elsewhere.

Instant Message Bullying (MSN): Receiving messages in real-time using MSN

‘Don’t suffer in silence!’ There is a card is in the student planner. It tells students exactly what do and who to speak to if they are being bullied or know someone who is being bullied. We encourage them not to be bystanders. Safe Place We ensure that any vulnerable student has a safe place to socialise at ease and they are aware at all stages of the support mechanisms within the school. The Year 7 common room and LSU are key areas for students who need extra support. Mediation Tutor/Heads of Year/Senior Learning co-ordinators and Student Support Officers When bullying is reported a member of staff listed above will get all parties together to discuss the situation and attempt to find a way forward and set targets for all involved. Peer Active Listeners These are students who are trained to listen to students about issues that might be worrying them. They are available most lunch-times and work on a one to one or group basis Buddies and Prefects Buddies are in Year 8 and they are there to help Year 7 students settle into school. Prefects are there for ALL students Worry Box Some tutors have a system of notes either delivered into a worry box or agreed place. This allows the tutor to speak to anyone with concerns and attempt to find a way forward.

The Right to Freedom of Expression – Homophobic Bullying As part of the Thought for the Week programme, all students have recently completed discussion tasks with their tutor and taken part in assem-blies which have focussed upon the theme of Homophobic Bullying and Stereotyping. Homophobic bullying is commonplace within society. It is seen in aspects of everyday life, on the streets, in the media and in political life. Schools are therefore not immune from the problem of homopho-bia. At the King John School homophobic name-calling is challenged in the same way as racist or sexist behaviour. Normal anti-bullying strate-gies, including sanctions where appropriate, are used when reacting to incidents and these strategies have a clear place within the context of a whole school preventative policy. We strive as school to create a positive, open, tolerant ethos in which matters of concern to young people are discussed calmly to find a resolution. Ms F David – Assistant Headteacher

Year 7 Readathon

update

During the last half of the Au- tumn term, Year 7 took part in

a Readathon run by the English Department, to raise money for their year group

charity, Make-A-Wish. The students did an amazing job and most of

them achieved their personal reading challenges.

Their hard work and enthusiasm meant that they raised a staggering total of

£2657.34 A big thank you to Year 7 English teachers and

tutors, and to Miss Murray and Mrs Arrowsmith, for all your support with the

Readathon, and to parents for encouraging your child to take part.

Most of all, thank you Year 7, for your fantastic efforts!

YEAR 9 Joe Harris 9‐04 Joe won the gold medal at the south east na onal tram-poline gala at  Gillingham on 27th January 2013. He won by a huge margin and his scores were actually higher than most of the senior fig A contestants; pre y impressive. He qualified to fig B and for the na onal finals at the Birming-ham NEC, to be held in July. This is all in his first ou ng at the start of the trampoline sea-son. He will also be compe ng in Europe this year. I would like to thank the school for all their support they have given to Joe.          Kind regards Lee Harris. 

The F1 in schools club went to the regional finals on Tuesday the 5th February.   

Team Gears consists of Ryan Horgan, James Mansfield, Ross Whi aker, Sam Hill-Lonergan, Josh Wapling and Kur s Walters. They have been working on their F1 cars, team logos, uniforms, displays, searching for sponsors and pu ng all the details of their experience together. It has taken them since the start of the year to get to this stage. Team Gears had a great  me. More to follow in the Easter issue.

CHRISTMAS CAROL SERVICE 2012 The King John School Music department held their annual Carol Concert at

Benfleet Methodist Church on 19th December. It was a very enjoyable evening with a huge turnout and everybody got into the festive mood joining in with

carols for all! Thank you to all students and staff involved for all your hard work which made the evening such a success. We look forward to seeing you in 2013. 

The Year 12 BTEC Music students recently took a trip to The British Music Experience at The O2. They had the opportunity to research influential British music history in a modern, interesting atmosphere. They could record them-selves singing, playing guitar and drums in the Gibson Interactive Studio and gain information on relevant artists at the swipe of their tickets. It was a great

day and fun way to explore British pop culture!

Ear Piercings It is made clear in the school’s rules that students may only wear one plain stud in the lobe (lower part) of each ear. Other types of earrings must not be worn for safety reasons. We currently have a number of students who have recently had additional piercings in other parts of the ear as well as the lobe. We understand that the cartilage can take up to a maximum of 3 months to completely heal and avoid infec-tion and for that reason any student who has had an ear piercing in the last 3 months up to 8 February 2013 will need to: • bring a letter in to their Head of Year confirming the date when they had the ear pierced. (Please note

that when the 3 month period is up they will be expected to remove the earring during school). • have the piercing covered with a plaster and wear their hair down. On those occasions it is deemed nec-

essary to wear their hair back they will be informed by the subject teacher. • produce the red permission slip, which will be issued by their Head of Year, whenever they are chal-

lenged by other members of staff. Any student returning after half term with a new piercing will have to remove their earrings whilst in the school even though this may cause the hole to close up. We would remind parents that no other piercings are allowed and students will be asked to remove them immediately. Uniform Due to an anomaly between our uniform policy and student planner, some female students are now wearing boots with skirts. Girls may only wear boots with trousers and we will ensure this is reflected in future planners. However, in order to avoid additional costs particularly so soon after Christmas students who have already been given permission may continue to wear boots with skirts up until the end of the term. There are a few reminders that we would like to bring to your attention: • Coats should be of a dark colour. • Only plain black cardigans / jumpers with the KJS logo may be worn.

Make Up • Students in Years 9 to 11 ONLY may wear discreet make up. No student should wear coloured nail vanish or false or acrylic nails and where they do so, they will be sent to Student Services to have the varnish removed or asked to have the nails professionally removed if necessary. We would ask you to support the school in making sure that your child follows the rules of the school. This will help us to concentrate on our main aim of teaching and learning. Thank you for your continued sup-port.

Examinations Office The King John School Examination Office now puts all important examination information on the school website. Look in the Main Entrance section and you will see the new examinations tab on the right-hand side. We will be regularly updating the site with deadlines, times, venues, booklets and guidelines etc. Please keep checking the site for the latest information about the current and forthcoming examination sessions. Please contact the Exams Officer, Ms. S Newton, with any enquiries.

As you may be aware the Construction arm of the Design and Technology Faculty politely re-quests parents/carers to donate a small sum annually towards the cost of materials for the pro-jects your child will be making over the various Key Stages. Following the general price increases and the increase in VAT, it is with regret that the Design and Technology Faculty had to review the amounts of requested donations towards materials. These amounts have not been increased for many years and as a result from September 2012 the new donations are as follows:- Key Stage 3 (Years 7 & 8) - £6 Key Stage 4 (Years 9, 10 &11) - £6 Key Stage 5 (Years 12 & 13) - £10 Letters will be sent out via students as and when these amounts become due (usually at the be-ginning of their rotation to Construction). If you have any difficulty in paying please contact the class teacher so that we do not embarrass your child by chasing payment. DISTRICT SWIMMING GALA- GIRLS DISTRICT CHAMPIONS AGAIN! The girls had a fantastic day at the annual gala at Clements Hall. The Year 9 and senior girls won their individual age groups with Year 7 just miss-ing out by 1 point. This meant the girls were crowned champions for the 4th year run-ning. There were individual wins for Caitlin Do-chin- Watson, Megan Haste and the relay team which also included Lydia Ketley and Sarah Carter. The Year 8 team swam well in a very competitive age group. The team consisted of Imogen Taylor, Maddie Norris, Maddie Knighton, Jilian Dimbelby, Hollie Stowe. The Year 9 team had winners with Kiera Tippett, Megan Haste and Mollie Garrard and the relay team which also in-cluded Jess Lacey and Frankie Roast. The senior team had wins for Ellie Pirrie, Mollie Giles and Eva Power and again the relay team were winners with Kirstie Fehiliy. The Year 7 boys were District champions with wins from Azar Aitmarri and the relay team. GIRLS FOOTBALL U13 – THROUGH TO SEMI FINAL OF ESSEX CUP A great team performance led to an 8-2 win against Moulsham in the quarter final on a very muddy pitch in windy conditions! Lavinia Tidy Jones scored after 2 minutes and Moulsham quick-ly equalised. Lavinia and Rumer Jones made it 3-1 at half time although many chances were saved by the Moulsham goalkeeper. After the break two quick goals from Lavinia eased the pressure and the team went through to the semi finals, with Rebecca Findlay and Rumer (hat trick) scoring again. Team – Shelby Nayler, Amy Rawlings, Jodie Purser, Sian Waite, Kelly Cornwell, Ellen Taylor, Megan Sanders, Akira White Under 16’s girls have made the Essex Cup Hockey Semi final On Thursday 31st of January Year 10 and 11 girls took on Saffron Walden County High School in the Essex Cup. The girls made a great start scoring in the first 2 minutes with the goal coming from Ellen Taylor. The first half passed with another two goals from Alice Boston and Ellie Turner-Powell. The girls then started the second half under more pressure as Saffron Walden were on the attack but cool de-fending from the Catlin Potts, Hannah Amato, Sian Waite and Natasha Cheeseman saw that no goals were scored. The second half ended on a high with a goal from Amy Pownall. The girls now progress to the Semi-finals and will face ei-ther Brentwood or New Hall. Well done to all that played; fingers crossed for the next round.
