THE KINETIC MOLECULAR THEORY
OF MATTER
1. ALL MATTER IS MADE UP OF ATOMS
Solids are joined together tightly and maintain a constant shape and volume
Liquids are joined together loosely and maintain their shape but not their volume
Gases are not joined and do not maintain their shape or volume
2. MOLECULES ARE IN CONSTANT MOTION 1. Gas molecules are in constant random motion
2. Liquid molecules can rotate and vibrate
3. Solid molecules can only vibrate
3. COLLISION BETWEEN MOLECULES TRANSFERS ENERGY
Similar to a newton’s cradle, a collision between the first two balls transfers energy to the next ones causing them to move as well
4. THERMAL ENERGY (HEAT) INCREASES MOLECULAR MOTION
The amount of energy that a particle has is directly related to the temperature
5. MOLECULES IN GASES DO NOT EXERT LARGE FORCES ON ONE ANOTHER UNLESS THEY COLLIDE
PHASE CHANGES BETWEEN MATTERAll matter can move from one state to another

ASSIGNMENT
You will now apply what you have learned (and will learn) to create a product that describes the Kinetic Molecular Theory of Motion
