The Jabberwock President’s Message Happy 2019 JLB members! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas season. Now that we’re in the start of a new year it’s time for new goals and refreshing our motivation on existing goals. I can’t think of a better way to inspire ourselves than by attending our Women’s Leadership Conference January 17! Christina Rodriguez, the Membership Council and our Board of Directors have worked hard to put together a meaningful day of speakers and topics. With just a few weeks away I ask you all to talk about the conference and invite your coworkers, friends, mentees, etc. to attend. Also coming down the pike is the nominating season for the 2019-2020 Board of Directors. Please look to the Nominating Committee’s article for which positions we are accepting applications for, deadlines, etc. Serving on the Board of Directors is the best way to get the most out of Junior League in my opinion. You learn so much about the organization, its members and all the community organizations that are working to fill needs in Billings just like Junior League. I welcome anyone to contact me if you’d like to discuss opportunities. Again, happiest new year and I look forward to learning with you at the 3rd Annual Women’s Leadership Conference on January 17. Happy 2019 JLB members! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas season. Now that we’re in the start of a new year it’s time for new goals and refreshing our motivation on existing goals. COMMUNICATIONS COUNCIL

The Communication Council continues to be busy. We had a planning and scheduling meeting at the end of November to prepare for the months of December and January. We are really working hard to do as much marketing for our conference as we can. Challenging ourselves to be as thrifty as possible has helped us to think outside the box and really come up with some great strategies. We recorded three promotional videos and have made posts highlighting our workshop speakers, as well as throwing back to previous conferences and sharing motivational leadership quotes. Our council has really been spending more time on LinkedIn. Along with sharing our posts on LinkedIn, we have added a lot of new contacts in order to create a larger network of local professionals. We will continue adding contacts as we can. Our council also came up with a fun way to get more people to like our Facebook page. We are having a push to 600 likes. Once we reach 600 we will have a drawing for a free ticket to our leadership conference. Junior League members will not be eligible to win, as we hope all of you will be attending anyway. Our council also brainstormed a list of marketing strategies that we can do as a League including having a Junior League informational table at the mall, asking stores to use our conference flyer as bag stuffers, having a poster hanging day all around town, and continued sharing of the conference information on your personal and professional social media accounts using the list of strategies we created and distributed. We appreciate the support of the entire Junior League of Billings in our marketing efforts. The Communication Council realizes the value of team-work. In other words, we couldn’t do it without you. Again we thank you for your help in sharing our posts and being willing to be in our pictures and videos. What a remarkable group of women we have in the Junior League of Billings. I am so proud to be a member of the JLB team! Amber Erlenbusch Communications Council Leader

COMMUNITY COUNCIL Hello Junior League of Billings and Happy Holidays! What a wonderful time of year to celebrate the holidays with those we love! This month we have had two successful community events. Our first event was a partnership with the sustainers in which we collected gift cards for Tumbleweed and made home-made Christmas Cards for Family Services. Both organizations were beyond thankful for the wonderful support during this holiday season and could not express more how wonderful and generous the Junior League of Billings was with our donations and time! With this time of year being tough for those families in need our ability to raise funds and show some Christmas cheer was beyond expectations! We truly have the best group of women in this organization with the biggest hearts. We also had a successful free laundry day at BYO Laundry with around $500 spent on washer loads and dryer time! This is the most we have spent thus far this year! The word has officially “got out” in Billings and we are serving those most in need. As for our plan in the new year, we are still focusing on Laundry’s future and will be addressing this come January. If you know of any organizations that should be added to our list of recipients for our laundry flyer please email their contact information to [email protected].

As always, let me know if you want to get more involved in the Free Laundry Day Project! We are always looking for fresh new eyes and new suggestions on how to make this wonderful and needed project sustainable!

Keep eyes open for the next free Laundry Day in the New Year!

Cheers, Emily Hoskins Community Council Chair

WHAT'S IN STORE FOR NONPROFITS IN 2019? GET THE BIG PICTURE FROM A NONPROFIT INSIDER

Featuring: David L. Thompson, Vice President of Public Policy, National Council of Nonprofits, Washington, DC

We’re making it a tradition – starting the new year with an expert’s examination of what could be happening in the new year to impact nonprofit organizations. One of our best-received webinar presenters, David L. Thompson, will be back to give us his analysis of how federal and state laws might affect nonprofit operations, giving, and overall sustainability. David is vice president of Public Policy at the National Council of Nonprofits in Washington, DC.

A lot is happening in policy-making and in state budgets for the upcoming year, and as with all nonprofits, these can enhance or obstruct the ability of Junior Leagues to advance their missions. How will spending decisions at City Hall, the State Capitol, or in DC affect us and our mission partners?

Our presenter will walk us through the big picture and give tips to help make sure the decisions of policymakers reflect the best interests of the work of your League. In this webinar, you will learn about:

Big-ticket agenda items in Congress and how the outcomes could affect

Trends in state policies that every charitable nonprofit needs to know about

Things to look out for at the state and local levels that provide an early warning that

changes are likely

Taking this information and turning it into simple, effective, and nonpartisan engagement

that makes a difference for your League and the people who depend on you Join us for this now annual conversation ─ whether or not your local League actively engages in public policy ─ so that you are ahead of the news cycles and know what’s coming.
