Provincial News The Island The Gampola police recently raided an underground illicit dis- tillery in Panvilatenne and seized 200,000 ml of illicit liquor. The liquor had been pumped via a pipeline to a tank in an under- ground room from a palatial house belonging to the mastermind behind the operation. and once it was matured and processed the end product was pumped out through another pipeline and sold to tip- plers, the police said. The distillery was located in a heavily populated area and the police said that those in the neigh- bourhood due to reasons best known to them had failed to inform the police of the illicit brewery, said the OIC of Gampola police IP Chandra Jayaweera. The police said that the rusted body of a car had been left in the garage to conceal the kasippu operation. The police said that the man who was behind the operation had been convicted by court on 22 previous occasions. The suspect was to be produced before the Gampola magistrate Upali Gunawardane, the police said. Nineteen students of Kolongoda Madhya Maha Vidyalaya, Hasalaka who were engaged in a shra- madana to clean the class rooms of their school were admitted to the Kolongoda Provincial Hospital after they developed a skin eruption. The school authori- ties said that the stu- dents while cleaning the ceiling of a class room had removed the aluminium foil laid on the roof to deflect the heat. “The students showed symptoms of a skin irritation follow- ing this,” a teacher said. Those affected were Grade Seven and Eight students. Tuesday 7th February, 2012 5 I n the dry season, Eheliyagoda experiences a severe water shortage. The “Biso Dola” water scheme which supplies water to Eheliyagoda is unable to supply enough water. It takes 24 hours to fill the 50,000 litre tanks but when the water is released all tanks run out of water within 15 minutes. The Eheliyagoda Water Resources and Water Supply and Drainage Board officials are try- ing to revive the old water scheme. Patients at the Eheliyagoda hospi- tal are also affected by the water shortage. According to the Eheliyagoda Hospital DMO Dr. D.A.Seneviratne, the best source of water in Eheliyagoda is the “Hulangasdaluwa” fountain which has been supplying water to the hospital for a long time. The Water Board gets its supply from the Horana Kanda Water Purification Plant for this purpose. Pure drinking water is distributed to Waskaduwa, Kalutara, Payagala, Beruwala, Dharga Town and Aluthgama areas. The Kalutara District Secretary P.H. L.
