There are human resource departments and there are research and development departments, but very few extremely successful organizations have a “complaint department.” They don’t exist. And my best guess as to why they don’t exist is because they don’t work. There’s no benefit to them. Here’s my other best guess. Some people complain just to be heard. And on the surface, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. We all need to be heard. It’s a way that we find value and know that we have worth, a sense that what we have to say is valuable. This is very important and we should welcome as many voices to our tables as we can. But when it comes to complaining, what I think gets missed is that for what we say to have value, meaningful value, it needs to be said to the person who needs to hear it. Whether it’s to a person directly or whether it’s to someone who can do something about your concern. This is when our words really have value: when they’re spoken to the correct audience. Doing a stage play in a board meeting, while creative, is not likely to be the most effective. Reading a poem as a way to teach your child how to drive when they’ve just run a red light, not most effective in that moment. Reading a history book at a comedy show. Doing interpretive dance at an event for the National Federation of the Blind. Speaking French to a Norwegian audience. None of these are effective because what they are trying to accomplish is being communicated to the wrong audience. There’s nothing wrong with these forms of communication and there’s nothing wrong with these audiences. They’re just mismatched. I also think that there’s some confusion about complaining itself. One of the reasons that there are so few “complaint departments” is because there is always a better way to communicate than to complain. Expressing concern, engaging in conversation, and offering encouragement are just a few. Because let’s be honest, we all know when someone else is complaining. It just sounds bad. It’s not enjoyable, engaging, or helpful to listen to. It has a sort of nails-on-the-chalkboard kind of quality to it. But for some reason when complaints come out of our own mouths, we seem to have a certain immunity to it. It doesn’t sound like complaining. It doesn’t hurt our own ears. There’s usually even some measure of vindication with it. We speak our own complaints with confidence and with some measure of certainty, even defiance ... ”something is not what I like, and I have something to say about it!” It’s also easy for us, when we are the complainers, to believe that we’re doing something else, when it’s actually just complaining. “Oh, I’m not complaining, I’m just commenting.” Or another favorite is, “Oh, I’m not complaining, I’m just making an observation.” Two telltale phrases that we can all listen for to double check ourselves to determine whether what we’re doing is expressing concern or just complaining. Another sure sign that we’re complaining, rather than something more helpful and productive, is that complaining is almost always spoken in the negative form. THE COMPLAINT DEPARTMENTDo you know that almost no successful organization has one?

”something is not what I like, and I have something to say about it!”

It’s also easy for us, when we are the complainers, to believe that we’re doing something else, when it’s actually just complaining. “Oh, I’m not complaining, I’m just commenting.” Or another favorite is, “Oh, I’m not complaining, I’m just making an observation.” Two telltale phrases that we can all listen for to double check ourselves to determine whether what we’re doing is expressing concern or just complaining.

that get done?” “Why can’t we just do it that way?” “Why does he get something I don’t?” “There isn’t enough toilet paper.” Did you notice all those contractions? ... didn’t, can’t, don’t, isn’t ... all spoken in the negative form. Focusing only on what’s “not” rather than what is, or what could be.

Complaining is focused only on the past ... only the past. And much of the time, complaining is not just focused, but obsessed with the past in a way that the present moment and any possible future moments do not and could not exist. Here are some alternatives in the positive form that express a similar sentiment without using “not” or “n’t”.

Instead of “Why didn’t that get done?” we could try “How can I help make sure that gets done?”

Instead of “Why can’t we just do it that way?” we could try, “I have ideas about some other ways we could try to do this.”

Instead of “Why does he get something that I don’t?” we could try, “I’m wondering if I’m missing something. Could you explain this to me?

And lastly, instead of “There isn’t enough toilet paper.” we could try, “There must be some way for God to help us find enough toilet paper for everyone.”

The second phrase in each of those examples leaves open the option for possibility, and doesn’t just close down the conversation.

Friends, complaining is natural. We all do it. Some people have mastered it as a fine art with such sweet perfection that almost nothing else comes out of their mouths except for complaints disguised as comments. But here’s the thing … if there’s something going on at the church that you’re wondering about, something you are concerned about, something that you are interested in, some question about the church, when in doubt, I am the person to come to. It’s my job ... particularly if it has something to do with the timing or work of another church staff member. But it could be anything at all. Please address all questions, comments, concerns, complaints, fears, anxieties, and paranoias to me. It’s my job. No really, it’s my job. And when you complain to other staff members, it actual prevents all of us from being able to do our jobs. There’s a lot of work to be done to build God’s kingdom here on Earth, or even just to keep this organization going, and we’d really like you to be a part of it. Express your concerns if you have them and then offer to help! But you need to know your complaining has no part to play.

So please, please, if you are wondering why you can’t find Brian, or why the lounge is being redecorated, or why Missy isn’t in the office, or why Tina hasn’t gotten back to you, please just talk to me. Please just talk to me and not just make comments to your friends and family. I can assure you that they are working. I can assure you that they are working hard. And there’s a very good chance that no matter how often you are in the building each week, there just might be more going on in the life of the church than what you are personally aware of, and our staff is likely tending to one of those things that either has come first or is more urgent in this particular moment. If you don’t like their choices, please talk to me. And just in case you don’t plan to talk to me, I’ve instructed all of the staff to direct you to me with your comments/complaints. So if it seems like they’re ignoring you, they aren’t. They’re just trying to redirect you to the closest thing we have to a complaint department: me. Come talk to me. It’s my job.

Please be patient, please be kind, and please don’t gossip. Please talk to me - to me - about any concerns you might have. I truly want to hear them and be helpful ... and yes, I’ll even hear your complaints.

Blessings,

Your Senior Minister, Pastor, Head of Staff, and CCO (Chief Complaint Officer) Kyle

#3: If you have any of the items on the list to follow laying around at home that we could have or borrow, please bring them in to the Christian Education office.

UPCOMING EVENTS

There are times when you need your pastor to listen and to be present for an illness, death, or a personal crisis. As you may have read recently in The Interpreter, we have a new phone number to call for those pastoral emergencies, which you can find in a box on page 11 of this issue. Your pastors are always ready and eager to care for the congregation with love and concern in these times.

However, we as a people of faith are each called to care for one another, as well. In John 15:12, Jesus says,

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” With that in mind, I am pleased to let you know that we are developing something new here at Saint Stephens. It is called The Congregational Care Team. This team hopes to provide care and support to families and individuals in a personal and compassionate way and to provide an opportunity to sense God’s presence among us.

That care could mean delivering a meal to new parents or providing meals for those diagnosed with a new illness, making visits wherever they might be needed, writing notes of encouragement, or sending cards to folks that are celebrating an anniversary or a birthday. Or perhaps you have thoughts on other ways this team can make a difference in someone’s life?

Or are you or someone you know dealing with a

sudden or chronic illness or loss in your family? Perhaps you are feeling disconnected because of the inability to attend church. Are you giving care to a loved one and needing an extra pair of hands for an errand or two? Or are you someone who feels the call to help out in any of these areas?

Last year Kathy Hass, among several other faith leaders here at Saint Stephens, and with your pastors, attended a Leadership Institute at the Church of the Resurrection in Kansas City. From that Leadership Institute came a call to Kathy to be instrumental in forming a Congregational Care Ministry here at Saint Stephens. Kathy will be our new Congregational Care Coordinator and can help you access the support or care you need or set you up to help in any of these areas of care if you feel that you can assist others in need.

Please call Kathy Hass at 715-536-1307 or email her at [email protected]. If you have any other questions regarding this exciting and new ministry, please feel free to contact me at the church office and I would be happy to share more of this vision with you.

God Bless!

Pastor Missy

FEED YOUR SPIRIT . . .Turning the Corner

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and will save those whose spirits are crushed.” - Psalm 34

The news won’t stop and the death tolls climb. Light dims on another dream.Lab tests say it’s time to stop. The withdrawal can’t happen because the money isn’t there. Admissions letters keep saying no. Bed seems the only safe space.

Circumstance can feel like there’s a foot on the throat of our joy. It’s crushing, this pressure. It leaves bruises we imagine the people around us don’t want to see. Depression can feel this way: like a pressure that mounts on the only way we know how to live and breathe. Depression cuts off life.

But the Lord is near they say.

God will save those whose spirits are crushed we’re told. We cannot hear these words of comfort and resolution without asking the next logical question:

But when?

Every moment of every day, someone, somewhere is crying: How long, O Lord? The Psalmist(s) and prophets keep company with this plea. And, at various points in our life, so do we.

Yet, The Lord is near. We may experience isolation, but we are not alone. We may feel that we are at an end, but, in every case – even in death – we are only at a beginning. This is the promise of faith, of resurrection.

We may feel the need to orchestrate an end to release us from our pain. If you or someone you know is in this place, hear this: God is near. God sees you. God knows what you are experiencing. And God intends a new beginning for you in this life.

The work of God, and particularly of God’s people, is to show up. God is always, always showing up for you. With God’s help, so do we.

Know that you are never, ever alone. There is a corner to turn. May the people who can help to shine light on that opportunity never be more than a message away.

Prayer

God help us. Send us your helpers – now. Because we need them. And when we can help, push us past our hesitation. Amen.
