For some of us, this isn’t the news we want to hear in November already, but yet there are others who find joy in the season of winter. I honestly understand both perspectives on winter. For those who don’t find the idea of winter joyous, it could be because with winter comes a higher risk with travel, or perhaps it’s the end of autumn and the starkness that winter brings, or maybe it is the cold and frigid temperatures. Then there are those who find winter joyous, and it could be because of the fun you can have with snow on the ground, or the beauty of the snow sparkling, or perhaps it’s because of the anticipation of what comes after winter. No matter your perspective on winter, the one thing winter causes us all to do more is retreat. I don’t mean retreat as in getting as far away from Wisconsin as humanly possible, though some do retreat in that way, too. What I mean by retreat is that winter causes us to draw back. But, the question is, what do we do when we draw back? My hope is that when we draw back during these winter months, that we take time to relax, but also that we take time to reflect. Because it’s when we take time to reflect, that we gain vision and perspective. In these winter months, the new church year begins, and I think it’s important for us, as the church, to draw back and reflect. Reflect on who we are, what we have done as a church up to this point, and who God is calling us to be. This is how we gain vision and perspective to help us as we go into the new church year and anticipate what’s ahead for us. Because that’s also a part of winter ... the anticipation of what is to come. What is to come? For us, as the church, at Saint Stephens, it’s the physical transformation the capital campaign will make. But it’s also the spiritual transformation that happens through our reflection that is to come. And what’s to come for each of us, is a transformation within our own beings. It’s just like how a transformation begins to take place and new life begins to spring up all around us as winter becomes spring. It will happen … eventually, and as we wait and anticipate, take time to reflect so those transformations can happen. Friends, take the time to discover that while winter may not be the most joyous season for all of us, that it does have its benefits and serves a purpose. Immerse yourself in it. Relax. Reflect. Anticipate. Transform.

Winter: A Season of Reflection, Anticipation, and TransformationWell, it finally happened … it snowed and it actually stayed on the ground.

FEED YOUR SPIRIT . . .Distributing Jesus

“While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it he broke it, and gave it to them.” - Matthew 26:26-27

We imagine Jesus handing that loaf down the table, disciple to disciple. But scripture doesn’t say exactly how he ‘gave it to them,’ so we don’t really know. But we do know how we give out communion—in many different ways.

We approach the server, we’re given bread, we dip it in the cup. We kneel at a rail, and the server brings bread and cup to us. We sit in pews, passing plates and rattling trays of little glasses.

We prefer some methods to others, yet still find devotional meaning in them all, attaching symbolism to going forward, kneeling, or sitting in the pews.

But we really don’t need to add meaning to our various ways of getting communion off the table and into people’s hands. They’re already meaningful just by being what they are—practicalities, efficiencies, delivery systems.

Consider this: No matter how we do it, whenever we give out communion the Spirit is training us in a vital Christian competence—the skill of distribution. We’re gradually acquiring God’s own resourcefulness for giving food to every living thing.

Next time you take canned goods to the food bank, organize meals at the shelter, set a meal on your family’s table, pass out sandwiches to the homeless in the park, or lobby for food justice in the halls of power, remember going forward to be given bread. Remember the server at the rail. Remember trays of little glasses passed in pews.

Remember that he ‘gave it to them.’ And be awed by what a holy thing it is to distribute food.

Prayer

Jesus, Bread of Life, with each communion given and received, makes us more skillful at distributing you. Amen.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATES(We will post the most recent updates here.

For the complete timeline dating back to early September 2018, please see back issues of The Interpreter.)

November 13, 2018 - Commitment Sunday - NOW!

This past Sunday we celebrated the culmination of our NOW! Capital Campaign with Commitment Sunday. Many turned in their Commitment Cards and we blessed them on the altar along with our

other tithes and offerings. We hope that God truly will bless the efforts of all of you who stepped out in faith with your Commitments.

Our Goal is $700,000. Commitments received thus far total $352,418. We are at 50% of our goal.

Our Goal is 100% participation. We mailed out 550+ Commitment Cards. So far, 90 have been received. That is just 16% of individuals and families participating. Please, regardless of how much you are able to commit, return your card. We really want to see everyone engaged in the story that is unfolding NOW! at Saint Stephens. Please note: We cannot count pledges without names.

We will still be receiving cards in the upcoming weeks if you were not able to attend last Sunday. Please continue to pray and consider what you will contribute. There is no gift too small! The time is NOW!

Saint Stephens also received a $206,425.11 bequest from the Estate of Lylas Kanitz which has been invested to earn dividends, and Council anticipates these funds will be used to help with Capital Campaign items

November 6, 2018 - Prophetic Imagination

Last week letters, Commitment Cards, and NOW! booklets were mailed to families and adult members of Saint Stephens. If you did not receive one, please call the office.

This past Sunday we had planned another inspiration gathering with pizza and beer, but that got canceled due to the weather. Nonetheless, Craig Loscalzo from Generis joined us for a time during worship to inspire us on our journey with the NOW! Capital Campaign. That journey is nearly over.

This Sunday we will gather to make the commitment each of us has prayed about and decided in our heart to make ... that something over and above our regular giving that we will use to do NOW! what needs to be done so that later ... we can do so much more as Saint Stephens, both within our walls and without. We hope you will all come to worship this Sunday and bring your Commitment Cards with you. The journey ... of our NOW! Capital Campaign ... is coming to a close. NOW! the work begins.

PLANNING AHEAD FOR CHRISTMAS EVEThis year Christmas Eve worship services will be held at: 4:00 PM, 7:00 PM, and 9:00 PM. This seemed to work well last

year, and makes it easier for families, especially those with small children, to come and worship together. There will be no worship service on Christmas Day, Tuesday, December 25.

CAROLS AND LESSONSAs has become tradition, our Sunday after Christmas worship service, which falls on Sunday, December 30, this year, will be our Carols and Lessons service. Plan to come and rejoice in the spirit of the season. Let your Light Shine!

Don’t Walk ByIf you happen to see someone different than you,Do you quick turn away? Or just shuffle on thru?Do you try to pretend that they’re not really there?Or just turn to the side and pretend not to stare? Is embarrassment part of this awkward routine? Are past incidents causing your heart to be mean?Let’s remember we’re here for the Glory of God!And the devil, he waits for us not to respond. And so what if we just took a bit of our day?Went looking for looking for someone, went out of our way!Just a touch on the shoulder, a look in the eye. They will see there’s a God, because we didn’t walk by.

DINNER @ FIVE CHRISTMAS SHARINGSupporters and staff of our community dinner, Dinner @ Five, would once again like to show our appreciation for our guests. Do you have a simple craft item (i.e., a scarf, dish towel, doll clothes, etc.) left over that needs a home? Or maybe a knickknack or some sports memorabilia gathering dust? Wipe those down and give them a new home! A donation box will be located in the Kuck Lounge. Please consider helping out. Thank you for your time, talents, and contributions. Any questions? Contact Barb Davenport at 715.536.2902. All items must be dropped off by December 9 to enable our volunteers to share these gifts with our guests. Thank you!
