The Internet of Things is Going to Change How We View Our Household Items
As an IT company in Knoxville, we often think about the Internet as we know it right now. It’s the Internet of knowledge; the Internet of connection; the Internet of people – but certainly not the Internet of Things. Working in High Speed Data and Cable Networks in Knoxville, the potential of the “Internet of Things” is an exciting one, both for us, and for the general public. By exploring this concept further, we can picture how our day to day lives and household items will be in just a few short years, and we’re looking forward to it!
So, what is the Internet of Things?The concept is basically the idea that the vast majority of household items will be connected to the Internet, forming an entire network, so to speak. This includes things such as thermostats, your coffee machine, your car, even your watch; as well as the things we’d usually expect, such as your phone, computer, and television. The idea behind this is to create an overall network that we can collect, collate and use the data from the machines about how they function and interact. You could say that the overall objective is to improve people’s lives by understanding how the things they use on a day to day basis work and interact with each other.
What will the Internet of Things impact?Well, most things, really. It’s expected that the Internet of Things network will be relevant to most areas of life. For example, your security, health, your carbon footprint management, and even your vehicle. Largely, the benefits will be seen by businesses and corporations more-so than the individual, but there’s certainly potential for the benefit of the individual, too. Some of the larger areas expected to be impacted are:
- SecurityWith networked systems implemented as part of the Internet of Things, you’ll be able to check with a quick glance at your smartphone whether you’ve switched your lights off and engaged your security system. And if you haven’t? A few taps on your screen will fix that. This is of massive benefit to both individuals and businesses; who hasn’t worried whether they’ve locked their door for hours while they’re out? There’s no reason this technology wouldn't be implemented in vehicles as well.
- MarketingThis might seem strange, but think about all the times you’ve connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot while out and about. Now imagine if they were more efficient; the information that the owners of these hotspots could collect (your browsing habits, perhaps your personal data and so on) could be massively beneficial in their marketing efforts. The marketing industry is fully expected to take advantage of these improvements in technology.
- HealthcarePerhaps a little odd, healthcare will be put back into the hands of the individual in the near future. With technological advances that will allow us to keep track of our health ourselves, letting us know in advance if there is anything we need to visit a medical professional for and so on, we will be more responsible for our own well-being than ever before. This is great for us, and will also ease the strain on healthcare facilities worldwide.
