In general, the United States imported household ceramics in 2010 with a total value of US$2,880,703,000 from 123 countries. China was the single largest supplier with more than half of the United States total imports of household ceramics at US$ 1.582.229.000 for a market share of 54,93%. Mexico came in the distant second with US$ 360,980,000 (12,53%) followed by Japan at US$242,565,000 (8,42%) in the third place, Russia US$124,196,000 (4,31%), Thailand U S $ 9 6 , 5 7 7 , 0 0 0 ( 3 , 3 5 % ) , G e r m a n y US$68,790,000 (2,39%), while Indonesia was in t h e e i g h t h p l a ce w i t h a n e x p o r t o f US$57,848,000 (2,01%). France was ninth with US$41,812,000 (1,45%), United Kingdom US$41,224,000 (1,43%), Italy US$33,785,000 (1,17%) and Portugal at the 11th place with US$29,189,000 (1.01%). Other countries exported household ceramics to the United States at less than 1% of the total value.

The Potentials of Indonesian

Household Ceramicin the World Market

GENERAL OVERVIEW There are plenty of items made of ceramic around us, from roof tile, tableware, sanitaryware, floor tile to accessories. Indonesia is among the major ceramic producers, especially in the household ceramic items especially tableware.

Ceramic can be defined as an inorganic, nonmetallic solid prepared by the action of heat and subsequent cooling. Ceramic materials may have a crystalline or partly crystalline structure, or may be amorphous (e.g., a glass). Because most common ceramics are crystalline, the definition of ceramic is often restricted to inorganic crystalline materials, as opposed to the noncrystalline glasses.

Ceramic itself consists of several different types:

1. Earthenware, a common ceramic material, used extensively for pottery tableware and decorative objects;

2. Porcelain, a ceramic material including clay in the form of kaolin. The toughness, strength, and translucence of porcelain arise mainly from the formation of glass and the mineral mullite within the fired body at these high temperatures. Porcelain is sometimes informally referred to as china, as China was the birthplace of porcelain making.

3. Stoneware, a vitreous or semi-vitreous ceramic ware made primarily from non-refractory fire clay.

Tableware is a set of dishes used for setting a table, serving food, and for dining. Modern tableware can

be made of glass, porcelain, pottery, and durable plastic such as melamine resin.

There are plenty of tableware examples which can serve up to 32 people. Tableware can be divided into

• Plates, such as service plates, dinner plates, lunch plates, desert plates, salad plates, or bread plates

• Bowls, including soup bowls, cereal bowls, fruit bowls, cream soups, or dessert bowls

• Individual covered casseroles or covered soups

• Teacups, coffeecups, and Demitasse cups

• Saucers, including teacup saucers, coffeecup saucers, demitasse saucers, and cream soup saucers.

The United States was the largest importer with more than half of the total export with US$13,563,974 or 53.07%. Other Top destinations were the United Kingdom at the distant second place with US$3,117,295 (12.20%), Turkey US$3,052,104 (11.94%), France US$1,786,426 (6.99%), Egypt US$398,077 (1.56%) and Australia US$267,896 (1.05%). Other destinations only recorded less than 1% of total export value.

Othr ceramic goods eported by Indonesia include sinks, washbasins, water closet bowls etc which are grouped under HS 6910. The export in 2010 was US$24,883,867 with export in the first 8 months of 2011 was US$16,285,431, a slight increase of 2.35% year-on-year. Japan and the United States were the top market destinations for HS 6910 i t e m s w i t h e x p o r t v a l u e r e a c h i n g US$4,421,164 or 17.77% and US$4,335,127 (17.42%).

US$58,314,018 before rebounding steeply by 28,95% to US$ 82,077,034 in 2010. With the first 8 months export value already reaching some 77% of 2010's full year value, we can expect the full year value in 2011 to at least match, if not exceed, 2010's full year export value for goods under HS 6911.

The United States was the single largest importer of Indonesian ceramic tableware of porcelain or china in 2010 at US$27,834,000 or 33.91% of Indonesian total tableware of porcelain or china export, thus making the United States a very prospective country for Indonesia. The United

Kingdom was in the second place with US$12,176,000 or 14.83% followed by Japan with US$8,133,000 (9.88%), Belgium US$7,079,000 (8.62%) and South Korea US$4,737,000 (5.77%).Indonesia export of ceramic goods filed under HS 6909 (lab wares, agriculture tubs, and pack ing ar t ) in 2010 reached US$86,645,000. Export value in the first 8 months of 2011 reached US$69,627,728 or recording an increase of 25.18% in the same period of 2010. The Top 5 export destinations in 2010 were South Africa with an export value of US$19,344,419 or 22.33% of market share, followed by Japan at US$16,984,781 (19.60), Belgium US$13,655,749 (15.76%),

the United States US$12,681,201 (14.64%).

Indonesian exports

Indonesian tableware products can be found in 128 countries in the world including the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Belgium, South Korea, Australia, Singapore, Italy, Sweden, United Arab Emirates and Algeria.

Indonesia's total export of tableware of china or porcelain (HS 6911) to the world in 2010 was US$82,077,034. As of August 2011, the e x p o r t i n t h e f i r s t 8 m o n t h s w a s US$63,209,000, or an increase of 19.90% compared to the same period in 2010.

The export value has shown an upward trend s i n c e 2 0 0 6 w h e n t h e v a l u e w a s US$56,841,000 and increased by 4.57% to US$59,563,705 in 2007. Another increase was recorded in 2008 when export value increased by 5.45% to US$62,999,148. However, the 2008-2009 global financial crisis has caused the export to shrink by 8.03% to

The United States was the largest importer with more than half of the total export with US$13,563,974 or 53.07%. Other Top destinations were the United Kingdom at the distant second place with US$3,117,295 (12.20%), Turkey US$3,052,104 (11.94%), France US$1,786,426 (6.99%), Egypt US$398,077 (1.56%) and Australia US$267,896 (1.05%). Other destinations only recorded less than 1% of total export value.

Othr ceramic goods eported by Indonesia include sinks, washbasins, water closet bowls etc which are grouped under HS 6910. The export in 2010 was US$24,883,867 with export in the first 8 months of 2011 was US$16,285,431, a slight increase of 2.35% year-on-year. Japan and the United States were the top market destinations for HS 6910 i t e m s w i t h e x p o r t v a l u e r e a c h i n g US$4,421,164 or 17.77% and US$4,335,127 (17.42%).

In general, the United States imported household ceramics in 2010 with a total value of US$2,880,703,000 from 123 countries. China was the single largest supplier with more than half of the United States total imports of household ceramics at US$ 1.582.229.000 for a market share of 54,93%. Mexico came in the distant second with US$ 360,980,000 (12,53%) followed by Japan at US$242,565,000 (8,42%) in the third place, Russia US$124,196,000 (4,31%), Thailand U S $ 9 6 , 5 7 7 , 0 0 0 ( 3 , 3 5 % ) , G e r m a n y US$68,790,000 (2,39%), while Indonesia was in t h e e i g h t h p l a ce w i t h a n e x p o r t o f US$57,848,000 (2,01%). France was ninth with US$41,812,000 (1,45%), United Kingdom US$41,224,000 (1,43%), Italy US$33,785,000 (1,17%) and Portugal at the 11th place with US$29,189,000 (1.01%). Other countries exported household ceramics to the United States at less than 1% of the total value.

Household Ceramicin the World Market

GENERAL OVERVIEW There are plenty of items made of ceramic around us, from roof tile, tableware, sanitaryware, floor tile to accessories. Indonesia is among the major ceramic producers, especially in the household ceramic items especially tableware.

Ceramic can be defined as an inorganic, nonmetallic solid prepared by the action of heat and subsequent cooling. Ceramic materials may have a crystalline or partly crystalline structure, or may be amorphous (e.g., a glass). Because most common ceramics are crystalline, the definition of ceramic is often restricted to inorganic crystalline materials, as opposed to the noncrystalline glasses.

Ceramic itself consists of several different types:

1. Earthenware, a common ceramic material, used extensively for pottery tableware and decorative objects;

2. Porcelain, a ceramic material including clay in the form of kaolin. The toughness, strength, and translucence of porcelain arise mainly from the formation of glass and the mineral mullite within the fired body at these high temperatures. Porcelain is sometimes informally referred to as china, as China was the birthplace of porcelain making.

3. Stoneware, a vitreous or semi-vitreous ceramic ware made primarily from non-refractory fire clay.

Tableware is a set of dishes used for setting a table, serving food, and for dining. Modern tableware can

be made of glass, porcelain, pottery, and durable plastic such as melamine resin.

There are plenty of tableware examples which can serve up to 32 people. Tableware can be divided into

• Plates, such as service plates, dinner plates, lunch plates, desert plates, salad plates, or bread plates

• Bowls, including soup bowls, cereal bowls, fruit bowls, cream soups, or dessert bowls

• Individual covered casseroles or covered soups

• Teacups, coffeecups, and Demitasse cups

• Saucers, including teacup saucers, coffeecup saucers, demitasse saucers, and cream soup saucers.

• Mugs, coffee or tea mugs, and chocolate mugs.
