The International Conference on Flexible and Printed Electronics

Introduction

With growing interests in large area, flexible and low cost electronics globally, printing as an alternative technique for electronics manufacturing has become a focusing area in recent years. Printed electronics, together with a large family of new “breed” of electronics such as organic electronics, plastic electronics, flexible electronics, transparent electronics, paper electronics, wearable electronics, etc., are considered as complimentary to the dominant silicon microelectronics. Being flexible and printable enable a variety of innovative products that make our life colorful, more convenient, more fun and above all, better quality.

Flexible and printed electronics are still in its infancy stage. Though some flexible and printed electronics products start to appear in market, the technology itself is still developing. Many challenges are ahead in materials, fabrication processes, equipments and integrations, etc. The International Conference on Flexible and Printed Electronics (ICFPE) aims to bring together the best minds in academia and industry to discuss the challenges and exchange ideas. The conference started in 2009, with the first ICFPE held in Jeju, Korea, the second in Hsingchu, Taiwan, the third in Tokyo, Japan and the 4th in Jeju, Korea again in 2013.

In October 21-23, 2014, the 5th ICFPE has come to Beijing, China. China views the hosting of ICFPE as a great opportunity to let the Chinese researchers and industrialists see the worldwide development of flexible and printed electronics, and to let the world see what China has done and what are the opportunities of business and technology collaborations lying ahead. I am very pleased that the response to the ICFPE 2014 is very encouraging. We have received 240 abstracts from 20 countries. 222 abstracts have been selected to form the oral sessions and poster session. We have 5 plenary speakers of world renowned experts and 28 invited speakers with highly regarded experience in the field. There are 4 master classes to give young researchers the first hand knowledge in different aspects of flexible and printed electronics. I am particularly proud that nearly half of submitted abstracts are from Chinese researchers, representing the growing interests and activities in the field in China. With the sheer size of population, the potential market in China for flexible and printed electronics products cannot be ignored. China as the world largest manufacturing base for everything, particularly in sectors such as flat panel displays, solar cells, printed circuit boards, etc., will become one of the major driving forces to push the technology from research to commercialization. I am sure that the ICFPE 2014 will be one of the stepping stones towards the goal.

Enjoy your participation of ICFPE 2014 and enjoy your stay in Beijing!

The Printable Electronics Research Centre

1http://www.sinano.cas.cn/

The Printable Electronics Research Centre (PERC) at Suzhou Institute of Nanotech and Nano-tech and Nano-bionics (SINANO), Chinese Academy of Sciences, is the first center established in China, which has the sole focus on scientific research and technology development of printed electronics. The founder of PERC, Professor Zheng Cui, has over 20 years working experience at Cambridge University and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK before returning to China in October 2009. Application oriented R&D activities are being conducted at PERC in the areas of electronics inks formulation, printing processes and equipments, printed thin-film transistors and photovoltaic, development of organic light emitting devices and encapsulation. The Center now has 57 researchers, over 1500m2 laboratory space and is working on more than 30 state and private enterprise funded research projects. An engineering center as well as an industrial company, Suzhou NanoGrid Technology Ltd. (NGT), has also been setup to bridge the gap between scientifi c research and engineering development, with the aim of eventually leading to marketable products. Since it was established, a novel technology has been developed to make fl exible transparent conductive fi lms to replace ITO as transparent electrodes. The technology has been implemented at O-fi lm Inc. in high volume manufacturing for touch panels which have entered market.

Changzhou Institute of Printed Electronics Industry

Changzhou Institute of Printed Electronics Industry is located in Changzhou, Southern Jiangsu Province, adjacent to Shanghai, Nanjing. It is the first institute in China established by local government engaging in printed electronics technology industrialization. Also it’s playing the role of integrating software and hardware in printed electronics fi eld. The inaugural meeting of Changzhou Institute of Printed Electronics Industry was held in Changzhou

High-tech Zone on September 9th, 2013. Registered by Changzhou City and Changzhou High-tech Zone with RMB 50 million. The fi rst director of the institute is assumed by Dr. Zhang Xiachang, deputy secretary general of China National Innovation Association of Printed Electronics Industry and president of Kunshan Printed Electronics Co., Ltd. Currently, the institute has completed the preparation of three important projects:1. Piloting platform; 2.Laboratory, database and test platform; 3. Exhibition hall. The printed electronics piloting platform can provide service for printed electronics products or project companies and help them to complete large-scale production from printed electronics technology. Another important function is to research and develop the integrated technology of printed electronics products.Printed electronics laboratory, database and test platform are also used for the development and gathering of printed electronics industrial chain. The institute purchased advanced and general instruments, tools, and laboratory devices, constructed the database for printed electronics industry. The Institute will build the world’s first entity exhibition hall in the field of printed electronics, which will introduce the development history of printed electronics, present the status quo of global printed electronics products as well as the future development prospects of this industry.

Yi Xin Technology is a professional supplier for Micro-Nano Science, start business from 2006, our advanced technology support and complete sales and service system can ensure the customer’s trust and satisfaction and solution’s advancement. Now we are the China agent of Microtech laser lithography, Sonoplot precision picoliter fluid microarray microplotter, NanoCVD nanotubes and Graphene instruments. The SonoPlot® GIX Microplotter II is a precision picoliter fl uid dispensing system for the microarray and polymer electronics markets with significant advantages over existing products in deposited feature size and type, regularity of volumes dispensed, and fl exibility for the user. The core of the Microplotter is a dispenser that uses controlled ultrasonics to deposit fluid in a noncontact manner. This patented technology can produce picoliter droplets that form features on a surface as small as 5 μm wide. When combined with automatic surface height calibration, coeffi cients

of variability for deposited feature diameters as small as 10% can be achieved. A wide range of fl uids can be used, including aqueous solutions and many organic-solvent-based mixtures. Fluids that other dispensers struggle with, such as saturated solutions for MALDI-ToF matrices, or fl uids with viscosities up to 450 cP, can be deposited with ease. The ultrasonic pumping action is also an effi cient cleaning mechanism for quickly depositing many solutions sequentially. In addition to spots, the GIX Microplotter II can draw true continuous features, such as lines, arcs, and bends. These are uniform elements, not made from overlapping droplets like other technologies, and are particularly well-suited to the polymer electronics fi eld.
