Steelcase’s Big Plans For Work And Life

Mr. Uli Gwinner, President, Asia Pacific of Steelcase who was visiting Hyderabad for their showroom opening.

While Steelcase admits that their products are significantly costlier than those that are locally manufactured, they are not apologetic. They attribute this higher cost to a significant component of custom-duty that they have to pay (which will be done away with once their new plant goes on-stream) as well as the superior nature of the product themselves.

“The products are built to last and adhere to a worldwide Steelcase standard, hence it limits the company from bringing costs down. You cannot build a BMW 3-series at Tata Nano prices,” pointed out Mr. Uli Gwinner, adding, “We came down really significantly in our pricing in Asia Pacific, but if you compare us to the cheap local competition we will never be able to reach these price points. When our customers buy a Steelcase product they have a certain expectation, they expect that it lasts for at least 10 years, they expect it is ergonomic, they expect that the fabric is not abrasing quicker, that’s our level and we don’t go below that.”

With no manufacturing out-sourced and all the employees directly employed by Steelcase at

their soon to be inaugurated factory the company is very bullish on its future, “We will not outsource the manufacturing and the quality of the factory will be exactly the same like in any other part of the world. It will be a world-class factory from the production of the first chair,” said Mr. Uli Gwinner, who is keen to leave no stone unturned in making sure Steelcase has a great future in India.Contact: DLF Cyber City, Building No.9A,Ground Floor, DLF Phase-III,Gurgaon 122002tel: 0124 3077201email: [email protected]: www.steelcase.asia

Event Review

There are some who respond to the call of the wild and are clearly swooned by the

mysteries and designs of nature. Adwait is probably one of the few designers who belongs to this eco-friendly category. Adwait strictly adheres to his principle which forbids the felling of trees and makes his products from wood sourced from naturally fallen trees.

Mumbai recently played host to a rare collection of art furniture, as former Miss India Uttara Kher and former model Adwait Kher launched their teakwood art furniture collection at the BMB Gallery in Mumbai. The exhibition themed “Axe the Axe” saw yesteryears actress Shabana Azmi inaugurate the collection by actually axing an axe along with the dynamic duo.

Some of the exhibits included coffee tables made out of the axle of bullock carts, bar cabinets made out of facades of carved wood, folding sofas made from old chests, charming lanterns and many others that have all been designed by Mr. Adwait Kher.

Adwait and Uttara showed us their collection with great patience, and were more than happy to share details of their design journey with us. Here are some excerpts from our conversation:

Uttara & Adwait Axe The AxeExtraordinary pieces made from recycled wood or naturally fallen trees is what marked this eclectic collection of furniture by Adwait and Uttara Kher. BY ULKA & ViKAs

So tell us something about your work?A lot of day dreaming takes place, sometimes days, weeks or even months. I don’t fiddle with the wood till I see a form in it. My workshop is in Nashik where I work with 3 craftsmen who assist me in my work.

How did you come across the idea of using recycled or waste wood?I am very upset by the way people cut trees down. It hurts me emotionally, and so I use the wood that has been already used for all of my work. I choose the wood which no one buys, which has no commercial value and then I make things out of it. Most of our work doesn’t have nails and screws. We use wooden joinery for our work.

How easy or difficult is it to source the raw materials? If you like the job, it’s very easy. This job is just a byproduct of my fulltime job that is wander lusting. That is my primary lust in life. I see things I like, I go to forest auctions and then life becomes easy.

Is there a particular line of products

you like to design?I have no idea of any classifications. Design is when it flows free. All classifications are man-made.

So you give your artistic abilities a free hand while designing these products?I like to believe that. It is the inherent artistry of nature. I don’t give myself a free hand; I give nature a free hand.

THE INSIDE TRACK May 2012

What has been your response to your collection?I realize that these kinds of things are not seen in Mumbai at all. I have been waiting for a long time. I thought I would give it a try and see if they are accepted or not.

Considering that you recycle wood, what is the durability or shelf life of a product?Easily 200-300 years.

Do you have plans to set up shop abroad? No, but I export my products to Switzerland and Germany. I have been doing that for a few years now. They work well with my style.

Any artist who has been your constant source of inspiration?3 ac tua l l y. My wi f e and 2 daughters.

After having a tete-a-tete with the

duo one feels delighted about the fact that even in an age driven by materialism and commercialization, there are a few who continue to contribute to the preservation of nature. Not only are the interiors an eclectic mix of the new and the contemporary but each villa is also completely different from the other. (Excerpts from an interview with Patty Mak)

While designing the interiors of the Signature Villas, what kind of variation will be used to make each different?

For the very first time ever in Bangalore, buyers are offered an opportunity not just to make choices about the finishes of their interiors but also the configuration of the

internal spaces. There is a choice available of having a double volume height either in the living room or the dining room. With these permutations of choices, every house would be unique. No two houses would be alike. It means owning a bespoke home.

Are any Indian designers involved in the project as well?

We do not have any Indian colleagues at the moment but would be more than happy to have some in the future. Our doors are open to all creative people especially those that are in sync with our ideas and philosophy.

How will you choose and source your materials? Will you incorporate any local materials along with international ones to design the interiors?

We would source the most suitable product regardless of its origin that would best meet the need of the design. Local materials are used as long as they meet with our high

As the world gets increasingly globalised do you think that it gives rise to a coherence in design regardless of geography and ethnicity?

Globalisation does lead to a certain

uniformity but as any good and sensitive designer we should address each in context with the cultural and geographical differences. These are design parameters that supply the unique character.

The MBS 002 Dining TableThe four legs extend from the central aluminum beam like elegantly sculptured spokes. The optical lightness of this construction culminates in a grey-shaded transparent glass plate. The table is available in two frame variants: one in matte graphite black and another in a light satin finish.

The MBS 003 ChairThe futuristic-looking chairs set new standards in terms of shape and material. Through the exciting interplay of convex and concave lines, a dynamic shape is created which gives the chairs a particular air of lightness. A seat shell made of laminated wood ensures perfect, long-lasting seating comfort.

The Chaise LongueThe three dimensional formed wooden frame ensures the utmost level of lounge relaxation. The aluminum pedestal and the cover, available in either material or leather, provide an optical contrast to the wood. The chaise lounge combines opulence and lightness. Contact: www.emercedesbenz.com
