Not so long ago, I had the opportunity to meet an extraordi-nary resident of Avila. A person that many of you may see on a regular basis but may not know has a very, special talent. She is quiet, reserved, and a very private person except when she is performing. Her act can be described as explosive or lightning fast, and she has performed on many world stages… places like Stockholm, Helsinki, Moscow and London. But this person is saving her best for a special event to be held in Beijing in 2015 and Rio in 2016 -- the World Championships and Olympics. You see, nestled inside the quiet streets of Avila lives Olym-pic Gold Medalist and current World Record holder, Tianna Bartoletta. That’s right, Tianna won a gold medal in 2012 at the London Olympics in the 4x100m relay and lives and trains right here in the Tampa Bay area!

Long time Avila resident John Bartoletta met Tianna back in 2011 by chance at a restaurant in Orlando. They struck up a conversation, and three hours later a new relationship had started. John was so intrigued by Tianna and her story that they continued to see each other, and a year later they were married. But to really appreciate Tianna and John’s journey, we have to look back at their past that was full of many highs and lows.

Tianna experienced great success during her high school and college years. She earned four back-to-back state titles in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay, and the long jump. By the time she

graduated from high school in Elyria, Ohio, Tianna had earned nine state titles and two state records and was headed to the University of Tennessee on a full scholarship. In college, she dominated every major championship in the SEC and NCAA Indoor and Outdoor arenas, which would eventually earn her a spot on the World Championship team.

But before the World Championship in 2005, Tianna’s confidence was shaken in her international debut in Stockholm, Sweden. There was a lot of competition, and while Tianna did not fare so well in her event, the pressure did not sway her desire to compete. Tianna successfully went on to the World Championship in Helsinki, Finland becoming the youngest competitor, at age 19, to win the World Championship in the long jump division. She was immediately signed by NIKE and was on her way to posting her new person-al best in the World Indoor Champion-ship held in Moscow later that same year.

After Moscow, Tianna would compete in a Team USA event held in London in 2006. It was there that Tianna’s career would take a turn for the worse. Tianna would sustain an injury during one of her long jump practices, landing in the pit with her right leg still straight. Her leg buckled, bending backwards, tearing cartilage and chipping pieces of bone off of the patella. Tianna finished her season enduring the pain, but was not able to defend her World Championship titles the following year. Surgery, rehab and lots of hard work would become her routine in the coming months.

By 2008 Tianna had high hopes to make the Olympic team and while she made it to the finals, she did not make the team. Disappointed with her results, Tianna said she went through some pretty tough times trying to get back into form. “I was fearful and timid about putting any

weight on the leg that had sustained the injury,” said Tianna. She went in to say, “It was hard to accept the poor results I was having, so I switched to sprinting but that did not change my results either….at least not right away.”

It wasn’t until 2011, when two important people came into Tianna’s life that everything would begin to change in a positive direction. First, she met John who would love, support and guide her through the next stages of her career; and second, the couple hired Rana Reider, a highly rated sprints and jump coach that lived in the Daytona Beach area. John overhauled Tianna’s training, changing everything from her diet to her attitude and even tearing apart her training regimen. Tianna would travel six times a week back and forth from Tampa to Daytona to get the most out of her workout regimen with Reider. The training was physically and mentally challenging but the hard work would eventually pay off.

Success would come in 2012, as Tianna posted a world leading time of 7.02 for the 60m in Arkansas. She also landed the US 60m indoor title and world indoor bronze in Istanbul. Tianna was back, and the best was yet to come. During the London Olympics, Tianna would post her personal best in the 100m final. She would run 10.85 but, unbelievably, she did not medal, coming in fourth place instead. “John and I were so excited,” said Tianna. “Even though I did not medal, it was my personal best and I knew I was just getting started.”

A week later, Tianna was preparing for the 4x100m relay. John explained, “On the day of the race Tianna’s energy was down, she had been on the road competing for over a month. I gave her an audio book to listen to called As a Man Thinketh by James Allen and left her alone for a few hours. After she listened to the book, Tianna was revved up and ready to go!” Tianna went on to say, “The book inspires you to become whatever you think you are. It’s all about the power of positive thinking.” Team USA would go on to win the gold medal that day breaking the 26-year-old world record previously held by the East Germans. Their time of 40.82 shattered the previous record of 41.55.

I asked the Bartolettas what they did after winning the gold, think-ing there might have been a huge celebration, but Tianna said, “No way… we went back to the flat we rented, put the medal on the kitchen counter, and I ate a bag of chips, three Magnum ice cream bars and some sour patch candy while we watched Harry Potter! I had a great sense of relief that all our hard work paid off.”

After the Olympics and towards the end of 2012 Tianna would transition into bobsleigh. John felt Tianna would be a natural in this sport and called the USA bobsleigh coach

to arrange a tryout. John said, “We felt Tianna would be a strong pusher, and it turns out we were right. We traveled to Lake Placid, NY so the coach could take a look at her. He was so impressed with her technique. Tianna made the team and competed in the US World Cup fin-ishing third, earning a bronze medal.

The experience in bobsleigh gave Tianna encouragement to get back into the long jump. Tianna said, “Some of the movements were similar, and I felt like I might be ready to jump again.” Unfor-tunately, a back injury would sideline Tianna once again, and she would have to sit out the entire year of 2013.

Tianna and John took this opportunity to regroup, strengthen their relationship and work on a plan for 2014 and beyond. They hired world renowned speed coach Loren Seagrave at IMG in Bradenton and Tianna regained her form in the long jump. Already this year, Tianna has claimed three Diamond League wins in

route to the overall title in the women’s long jump. She improved her personal best from 6.89m (dating from her world championship success in 2005) up to her world leading mark of 7.02m. She has also posted the four longest jumps in the world this year. Her sprinting has not wavered this year, either. She won the 100m at the US Championships, the 200m at the New York Diamond League, World Relay gold in the 4x100m, and bagged 60m bronze at the Sopot World Indoor Championships in March.

Her future ambitions are to win medals in the 100m, long jump and 4x100m relay at the next three global championships – the 2015 and 2017 World Championships and 2016 Rio Olympics. It is a tall order, but Tianna said she is mentally prepared. “The happiness, stability and unwavering sup-port from John have helped to shape who I am today. We have our goals and we’re going to go and get them!” It’s very clear to see that while Tianna is the athlete, this is very much a team effort. John is great at the

pep talks and preparing Tianna in the days leading into the event; but once it’s game day, Tianna turns the switch on, and like any elite athlete blocks out all of the chatter and just goes out and performs.

John’s background has helped shape Tianna’s success and it’s no wonder he has been a positive influence in her life. John is the founder and managing member of The Highstreet Group, which is an inde-pendent hedge fund company that offers investment strategies designed to meet the needs of their clientele in today’s ever changing financial markets. Their strategies are available to institutional investors, trust companies, professional associations, pen-sion funds, endowments, foundations and high net worth individuals. John has been described as passionate, innovative, and determined, and those traits are carried over in both his professional and personal life.

These three principles, DISCIPLINE, PATIENCE, and RESPECT are themes that seem to flow throughout the Barto-lettas’ life. I can easily see these principles transitioning from the successful business world John is involved in, to the many arenas Tianna competes in. To be successful, you certainly must be DISCIPLINED both on and off your stage, whether that’s in the business world or on the field. The PATIENCE must come from the highs and lows you experience in life. It’s not always going to be good, but you find the positives and move forward to achieve success. Eventually, you not only give but also must gain RESPECT from the competition around you. Once you have that respect, again the success will follow.

So, with all of this hard work and success, you might be wondering how John and Tianna relax? That’s where living in Avila comes in. John said, “I moved from the Tampa Palms area into Avila because

I was looking for security and privacy. Avila is like our sanctuary. It is the place we escape to after a long day at work and training.” Tianna added, “Avila is a beautiful community where I enjoy walk-ing our dog, Bailey, and playing in the park. I’m also able to do some off day training there, too! We feel fortunate to live here, and I am so happy to see those gates at the end of the day. At home we like to read and watch movies. Our home is a great place to hide and relax!”

As I was getting ready to leave John and Tianna showed me some of the many mementos from their travels around the world. Tianna said, “All of the pieces on our mantel are from places we have visited and have shared some beautiful memo-ries.” Those pieces include her numerous awards, especially that gold medal from the London Olympics. It was amazing to see all of Tianna and John’s hard work proudly displayed in their home, and I am absolutely sure there will be more to add in the coming months! I am excited to see Tianna compete at the World Outdoor Championship in Beijing in 2015 and in the Rio Olympics in 2016. I wish you all the best… Go Tianna, Go Team Bartoletta and Go TEAM USA!
