Our retiring
teachers say
goodbye Bird By: Christan Rist
When Mr. Hetterich, Mrs.
Bolton, Mr. Gregory, Mr.
Shurlds, and Mrs. Blankenbe-
cler, re-
tire this
year, they
take 181
combined
years of
experi-
ence with
them.
Making the choice to leave
the school was difficult and
became the beginning of a jour-
ney. They will be leaving be-
hind students with whom and
teachers they have shared
many memories.
“I spent my entire first year
of teaching holding onto my
chin, because I was a nervous
wreck,”
said Mrs.
Bolton,
English
Although
making the
choice to
retire
proved
difficult, becoming a teacher
was not hard for them. Wheth-
er it was helping youth or the
need to provide teenagers with
a good education, they knew
this career would be their call-
ing.
“Whenever I get thank you
emails from students I’ve
taught
before
after so
many
years, I
feel very
happy,”
said Mr.
Shurlds,

There are moments during a
teacher’s career that are just so
special to them that they won’t
ever be able to forget when

The top 13 students of the 2013
Senior class are: Angela Allen,
AWS Al-Nigrish, Sarah Cham-
berlain, Brianna Douglas, Alex
Frljuckic, Virginia Goff, Cathe-
rine Grimes, Destiny
Hairfield, Shelton Ham-
ilton, Kamaria Harris,
Hieng Leng, Kimberly
Point, and Christan Rist.
Being at the top of a
class is an honor that
illustrates hard work
and dedication.
“I feel great about my
accomplishments be-
cause I definitely worked
hard to get where I am,”
said Destiny Hairfield.
It takes time, commit-
ment, and prioritizing
for students to achieve
their high rank within their
class.
“I use a planner or a calendar to
keep track of my deadlines. This
method helps me organize my
assignments,” said Brianna Doug-
las.
Not only are the top 13 students
conscious about their academics,
they also have personal motiva-
tions that pushes them.
“I’m motivated to maintain my
rank and succeed academically
because I want to get a scholar-
ship,” said Virginia Goff.
The students did not achieve
their ranks with ease; they also
faced challenges throughout their
school year.
“Keeping up with my
grades in AP classes is
definitely challenging.
There’s no such thing as
beauty sleep,” said Kim-
berly Point.
As graduation approach-
es, students reflect on
their 4 years of high school
and their accomplish-
ments.
“Being in the rank
among 12 other accom-
plished students show that
I’m a hardworking and
determined person,” said
Angela Allen.
Ranking in the top 13 is a step-
ping stone to greater academic
success for these students in the
future.
NHS inducts new members to the society By: Christan Rist
In March, 32 members were in-
ducted into the National Honor’s
Society. These
students were
inducted based on
a GPA of 3.6, be-
ing active in at
least one in school
and one out of
school extracurric-
ular activity, and
having at least ten
hours of communi-
ty service done.
“It was wonderful to see all the
students ready to become mem-
bers, and it really made me feel
proud of our school for having
such talented students,” said
president Janhavi Giribhattanav-
ar.
Not only are there require-
ments to get into NHS, but there
are also requirements to stay in.
“Once you’re in NHS you will
need to obtain an additional 40
hours of community service,”
said chairman, Ms. Hackett.
Inductees include: Angela Allen,
Tobias Barth, Cameron
Barts, John Bellflower, Brandon
Botset, Rashon Britt, Alex Cejka,
Austin Davis, Trevor Dyke, Span-
dan Fadnis, Krysten
Fideli, Evan Fitts, Jack-
son Gillie, Adam Glymph,

Hairfield and Brown valued as
Bird 2013 Students of the Year By: Spencer Sabet
Language societies welcome new inductees By: Spencer Sabet
The L.C. Bird World Lan-
guage Department held its
annual Honor Society Induction
Ceremony, welcom-
ing 27 members of
the Bird Chapters
of the National
Spanish, French,
German, Japanese,
and Latin Honor
Societies.
“It’s not just about
whether you have
A’s,” said Spanish
teacher Senora
Luqman. “We also
honor sticking to a
language.”
The ceremony began with
introductions by Bird Chapter
Spanish Honor Society presi-
dent Catherine Grimes, after
which five keynote speakers
traveling.
Current members of the five
world language honor societies
then came to the
front of the room in
turn to induct the
new members. With
each induction, the
new members were
given a memento,
such as a medal or
certificate, and were
asked to recite a
pledge in their lan-
guage of study.
“I like Japanese
because it’s some-
thing different, that
not everyone knows,” said Evan
Fitts, new member of The Na-
tional Japanese Honor Society.
students repay the favor of
appreciation.
“My wedding was really spe-
cial, some of my former stu-
dents
came from
all over
the coun-
try to
watch me
and Mar-
garet get
married,”
said Mr.
Gregory.
Many of the teachers have
mixed emotions about retire-
ment. They will be leaving be-
hind a classroom and trading it
for a relax-
ing day on
the beach
“I opened
the automo-
tive pro-
gram here
and next
year it’s
closing down, so it makes me
sad to think future students
won’t have this opportunity ,” said Mr. Hetterich.
Senior Destiny Hairfield and
freshman Nadia Brown have
been selected as LC Bird’s Stu-
dents of the Year for 2012-2013.
Each year, Bird selects two
Students for this award— one
from the senior class, and one
from the
under-
classes.
Student of
the Year
requires not
just exem-
plary
grades, but
a high
standing
among all
the students
at Bird. It is
a great honor.
Both Hairfield and Brown
were initially surprised to learn
that they had won such an
honor.
“I always put education first
because it is my responsibility,"
said Hairfield.
Achieving such academic suc-
cess as these students have is
hard work, and requires sacrifice.
In Hairfield’s case, she enjoys
bowling and field hockey, but has
never been able to play a school-
sponsored sport, for fear it would
interfere
with her
academics.
Brown and
Hairfield
both have
high aspira-
tions for
their future
careers—
Hairfield
plans to
major in
General
Biosciences at Virginia Tech. As a
freshman, Brown is unsure where
she wants to attend college, but
she loves nursing, and knows she
wants to go in that direction.
Along with honor, Hairfield and
Brown each feel a strong sense of
pride of being named Student of
the Year.

Hoffner is Bird’s Teacher of the Year By: Hieng Leng
Math teacher Ms. Ann
Hoffner has been named Teach-
er of the Year for 2013.
“There are many terrif-
ic teachers here at L.C.
Bird, and it’s an honor
that I am being recog-
nized for the award. I
feel that I need to live up
to the expectation that
comes with the title,”
said Ms. Hoffner.
Ms. Hoffner is dedicat-
ed to finding new teach-
ing methods to accom-
modate her students’
needs.
“My method changes
every year depending on the
students’ reactions to the les-
sons,” said Ms. Hoffner.
Maintaining a functioning
Ms. Hoffner’s consistency helps
her control her classes.
“I have a high expectation
from my students; I’m trying to
equip my students with the
math skills they need as well as
improving their work ethics,”
said Ms. Hoffner.
Ms. Hoffner has been teach-
ing for 19 years, and is now in
her fifth year teaching at Bird.
“I had a great experience
teaching at Bird so far; it’s like
a family here,” said Ms.
Hoffner.
Ms. Hoffner decided on her
teaching career during her
years at Holy Family High
School.
“When I was in the NHS in
my high school, I had tutored
some students, and I became
interested in teaching others
since then,” said Ms. Hoffner.
She earned her Bachelor’s
Degree from Adelphi Universi-
ty; she continued her study and
graduated with a Master’s De-
gree from the University of
Rhode Island.
Clarke and class officers begins their
preparation for the graduation
By: Catherine Grimes
As seniors send off their
Graduation invitations, prepa-
rations for graduation and oth-
er senior activities are being
finalized.
The Senior Class officers and
Sponsor are working out the
final rough spots after count-
less hours of work to make
the ceremony run without
incident.
“Right now we’re having
meetings to decide on small
details such as the programs
that are handed out to
guests when they arrive,”
said senior secretary Kim-
mie Point.
Despite the proficiency
with which the ceremony is
carried out, planning gradua-
tion is a taxing and time con-
suming occupation.
“It is a constant planning
process. It's impossible to put a
count of the hours I put in total,
for example - a senior social
probably takes an hour of plan-
ning, two, three hours of
shopping, and one hour imple-
menting. I couldn't even put a
number of hours on gradua-
tion,” said senior class repre-
sentative Mrs. Clarke.
Not only is there a lot of plan-
ning that goes into graduation
and senior events, but there is
a lot of help from faculty.
“At the most basic breakdown
Dr. Hebert, Ms. Westra and
Mrs. Blanton are my direct
contacts administratively, and
then Ms. Graham will be in
charge of the Junior Mar-
shalls,” said Clarke.
Despite the blood, sweat, and
tears that go in to making
Graduation the event that it is,
the reward is worth the hard
work.
“The most emotional and
exciting part of graduation is
when the teachers make a re-
ceiving line for the seniors to
recess through at the very
end ‘sending them on their
way’ -I'm getting chills just
thinking about it ,” said
Clarke.
The President of the Senior
Class, as well as working on
graduation preparations, will
be making preparations of
her own.
“I will be doing a speech at
graduation, so I’m making
sure that will be properly
done,” said president Ebonee
Valdiri.
With plans in their final stag-
es, and the school year reaching
its end, all the hard work that
went into graduation will pave
the way for a smooth transition
into the world.

Students dazzle at One Night in Paris By: Emilee Parham
Dresses dazzled, tuxe-
dos wowed, prom-goers
learned how to Dougie,
and the electric slide lit
up the dance floor at
Bird’s prom, One Night
in Paris. Prom was held
on a Saturday night at
the Indian Cultural
Center with a Parisian
theme.
“I thought prom went
great,” said teacher
Mrs. O’Shea “everybody
behaved and had fun.”
The night kicked off
with the senior walk, as
the seniors strutted in
style across the stage,
parents were there with camer-
as in hand. Although
the cherished senior
walk almost didn’t
make it to prom night.
Originally, the senior
walk was scheduled out
due to the time to go
through all the seniors.
“Parents were confused,
so we decided to have
the senior walk back,”
said teacher Mrs.
O’Shea.
Midway through the
night Prom King and
Queen were announced
by junior class President, Mi-
chael Tatum.
Ryan Harris and April
Andrews were then
dubbed L.C. Bird royal-
ty.
“I can’t describe the
excitement,
I’ll remember it for the
rest of my life,” said
senior April Andrews
“I’m just glad that I
didn’t trip.”
As the night continued
ladies lost their shoes
and the gentlemen
ditched their coats to
dance, some students
spent their time taking
sill pictures in the photo
booth, while others mingled
around the refreshments
table waiting for the
right song to jump on
the dance floor.
When the night came
to a close other students
kept the party going at
the Cultural Center at
the after prom breakfast
“The Skyhawk Bistro”.
There were plenty of
casino themed games for
students to play and
everyone got a hot
breakfast, but there
were also door prizes to
go around.
College
roommates
to avoid By: Christian Rist
As seniors go off to college,
they face the unexpected;
they’re stepping into a new
world. Dealing with a room-
mate can either be really excit-
ing or turn out horribly. There
are signs that you should know
indicating that you need a new
roommate, and quick.
“Ask yourself, is your room-
mate capable of having a nor-
mal human conversation? Do
they have any concept of hy-
giene? If they don’t, it’s time to
get out,” said teacher Mr.
Mackinnon.
Sometimes friends end up
going to the same college and
think it would be awesome to
be roommates, but sooner or
later spending all that study
time with your BFF will turn
out horribly. Remember when
your mother would tell you that
too much of a good thing will
make you sick, this can apply to
your college roommate too.
“I liked having a new room-
mate every year. After about
two or three months they start
to get on your nerves, so it’s
nice to have a fresh start every
year,” said teacher Mr. Wagner.
Think of the little habits that
don’t annoy you, but might
disturb others. All that tooth-
paste you collect at the bottom
of your sink might be just fine
by you, but your suitemates
might not appreciate your sign
of hygiene. Some roommates
can even be downright nasty.
“You shouldn’t have small
armies of pest patrolling your
dorm,” said Mr. MacKinnon.
Whether it’s spending too
much time with your closest
BFF in a tiny college dorm, or
leaving your hair plastered on
the shower curtains, leaving
home and moving in with a
stranger is going to be a new
experience. Keep your room
clean and your hair to yourself
and you should be just fine.

The Spring Musical
Bird participates in Fine Arts festival By: Catherine Grimes
Winterguard
beats Longwood
at competition By: Catherine Grimes
L.C. Bird’s Winterguard com-
peted in their last competition
of the season in Raleigh, North
Carolina. Many Virginia teams
competed, including collegiate
level teams.
The team won an award for
their performance at the com-
petition in Chesapeake, and
finished out their season by
scoring 65 points out of the 100
available in Raleigh.
Points for the team were
awarded for performance, drill,
how the music goes with the
routine, and execution of their
techniques.
“One of the challenges of
Winterguard is having to think
about all of the new choreogra-
phy we learned and having to
apply it” said junior Deja
Jefferson.
People from all over the coun-
ty came to the Fine Arts Festi-
val at Clover Hill. Bird’s art
students, particularly the Na-
tional Art Honor Society mem-
bers and art-class seniors, were
asked to
submit a
work to
showcase.
Works
range from
mediums
like paint,
sculpture,
photography,
and painted
windows; the
possibilities
are as differ-
ent and
widely
ranged as
the students
producing
them.
“I was excited to appreciate the
artwork of other high schoolers.
After seeing what the students
at Bird can do, I couldn’t wait
to see the pieces from other
schools” said senior Keith
Bahm.
Exhibits for each school were
set up Friday and Saturday,
showing off the talent from
around the county. The Bird
participants readied the dis-
play. The NAHS president,
Destiny Hairfield explained the
process.
“We painted the display boards,
and the art teachers selected
the artwork. Then we took it to
Clover Hill, and put it up on
the boards” said senior Destiny
Hairfield.
Many pieces are considered
but only a few can go to the
Fine Arts
Festival.
“[The
teachers]
like to
focus on
NAHS,
whoever
is a good
student,
works
really
hard, and
creates
great
pieces”
said sen-
ior pho-
tography
student Amanda Groves.
As well as visual art, many
performances took place at the
Festival, including a one act
performed by Bird’s own Thes-
pian Society.
“I’ve had my fill of being good, the angel of my neighborhood.”
Copacabana was this year’s spring musical, with senior Ryan Harris
playing as Tony Forte and sophomore Madison Roth as Lola Lamar.
The show consisted of pirates, kidnapping, and falling in love.

In celebration of William
Shakespeare’s birthday, the
second annual Bard at Bird
was held in the library. The
librarians, along with some
other L.C. Bird staff members,
dressed up and taught students
about life in the Shakespearean

“We wanted to do something
to get students interested in
learning, and all grade levels
cover Shakespeare,” said Eng-
lish teacher Mrs. O’Shea.
Students had the opportunity
to learn about medicine, weap-
ons, and architecture. Students
even had the chance to take
pictures in the stock-holds.
There were trivia questions
everyday on the announce-
ments. The winning students
Clinton Gillespi, Damen Foster,
Madison Roth, and Joseph

“The Shakespeare trivia ques-
tions were used to advertise the

ing this event.

In order to participate in the

“My portfolio consisted of a

practically here! It’s coming up
at the end of May.
“I feel very nervous about my
first spring concert, but excited
at the same time,” said fresh-
man Denise Mallory.
Concert Choir, Girls Vocal
Jazz, Adagio, Reflections, and
Sudden Image are all perform-
ing in the spring concert. This
is the last performance for our
seniors.
“It feels great to be doing my
last spring concert because I’ve
had so much fun so far, and
this year was the best,” said
senior Victoria Allen.
The finale, “Forever a Fami-
ly”, has been performed at the
spring concerts at Bird since
the early 1990’s. The song is
continued every year in honor
of Mrs. Gregory.
“I am really excited for the
senior slideshow, and I know
it’s going to put us in tears,”
said senior Coronda Colbert.
The seniors will sing their
song called, “You’ll Never Walk
Alone”, during the senior
slideshow, while their baby and
senior pictures will be shown.
The bands that will be per-
forming received its 15th honor
band title by getting all superi-
or ratings at their last competi-
tion.
“It feels good to leave Bird
behind with a lasting legacy of
success,” said drum major Evan
Fitts.
The spring concert was held
in the Margaret F Gregory
where the band performed
“Passages”, “Foundry”, ”Sun
Cycles”, “Time Shift”, “To the
Sky”, Heartbeat Five”, “All the
Armed Forces Songs”, and the
Bird tradition “Stars and
Stripes Forever”.
“The spring concert is always
emotional because it’s the sen-
ior’s last time to perfom,”said
junior Danielle Stith.
The concert was held mid-May
and there was plenty of talent
in the auditorium that night.
L.C Bird’s symphonic band is
ready to kick off spring with
their final band concert.

Teens with Tattoos: Taboo? By: Emilee Parham
When it is no longer senioritis By: Catherine Grimes
As students roam the halls,
waiting for the school year to end,
murmurs of senioritis start to
crop up. This on the surface, is a
harmless lack of interest for the
rigor of school, and can be at-
tributed to the fast approach of
summer. However, sometimes,
senioritis is not what is really
going on.
Loss of interest in usual activi-
ties, low energy or restlessness,
symptoms of teen depression.
“Being a teen is really difficult,
it’s not exclusive to teens that
have experienced something
traumatic” said Guidance coun-
selor Ms. Gerlach.
The vast majority of senioritis
sufferers are just ready for the
school year to get out, and to
move on to that next step, but
there are some who cannot
explain the fallout.
Studies have shown that one
in eight adolescents may suffer
from depression, so it is a seri-
ous factor in the life of a typical
teen.
There are varying forms of
depression. For clinically de-
pressed patients, it’s hard to do
everyday task –even getting out
of bed can be a challenge. There
are also those who are de-
pressed yet functional.
“A lot of people may be de-
pressed and you may not even
know it” said school nurse Do-
ris Elliott.
The key to diagnosis is
knowledge; awareness of symp-
toms and sensitivity to depres-
sion may prevent the illness
from getting out of hand.
“I think it’s important to take
care of yourself –to really think
of the things you do to help you
feel good, if it’s talking to
friends or talking to family, or
doing fun things or laughing”
said Conn.
Ms. Conn is available on Mon-
days, Thursdays and Fridays, if
it’s important to talk to some-
one now.
Helpful sites for teens who
may be depressed, or who may
know someone who is de-
pressed are us.reachout.com,
and a support group website at
www.dailystrength.org/c/
Depression-Teen/support-
group.
“Focus on the positive things
in your life, it’s easy to get
bogged down with all of the
stress” said Conn
Sometimes, it’s not senioritis
anymore, be aware of how you
feel and remember there are
people out there for you.
Athletics
conquer the
school By: Spencer Sabet
Athletics is an integral part of
any high school— they bring
students together and give
them a sense of community.
But when does the focus on
athletics become too great?
Even if students do not par-
ticipate in any school-sponsored
athletics, they generally still
find interest in spectating
school sports, and feel a sense
of pride for their school when a
team does well.
“There is a focus on athletics
because you have pep rallies
and such, which bring a school
together,” said Bird guidance
counselor Ms. Gerlach.
The universal appeal of ath-
letics, however, can lead
schools to give too large a focus
on athletics. A school will put
the majority of its energy, re-
sources, and recognition into
sports, at the expense of other
extracurricular interests and
activities, and sometimes even
academics itself.
“You do have to have a
healthy balance, and a lot of
schools do go over that bal-
ance,” said Ms. Gerlach.
When a school disrupts the
balance by focusing too much
on athletics, what was once a
feeling of community amongst
all students, athletic or not,
becomes replaced by a feeling of
resentment in non-athletic
students. So even if academic
success is not neglected due to
increased focus on athletics, it
is still lessened.
Additionally, neglecting other
forms of recreation within a
school— artistic, theatrical, or
otherwise. Yes, this means it is
possible for a school to give too
much focus to another pursuit,
but the trend tends towards
athletics. In the end, modera-
tion— balance— is crucial to
achieving both the academic
success and harmony of the
student body.
Whether it’s a butterfly on
the ankle or a flaming skull on
the arm, teenagers everywhere
are getting tattoos. But is this
permanent act of rebellion
harmful or harmless?
Turning 18 and being able to
get a tattoo is an exciting expe-
rience, so many are eager to
rush and get one. If you’re con-
sidering getting a tattoo, think
before you ink. That dragon
tattoo on your neck doesn't
scream honor roll student.
Does the tattoo you want hold
meaning, or do you really just
like pink bunnies? For a first
tattoo, pick something mean-
ingful (and I don’t mean your
favorite band) that you won’t
regret when you’re fifty. If you
have to ask for someone’s opin-
ion on the tattoo you want,
don’t get it. Be 100% sure that
is what you want, this will save
you the trouble later of wanting
to rip off your skin.
Be original, if you’ve seen it
on Tumblr, odds are 6,3885
other people have a tattoo just
like it. Don’t follow the trend of
infinity symbols or birds, get
creative.
Let’s be real, that cute tattoo
you want is going to hurt. Areas
with bone, like your ribs, will
be painful. While a tattoo on
the arm will tickle in compari-
son.
Just make sure you have
done your research, picked an
experienced artist, and will be
happy with it once its all over.

“Every project John

Mrs. Gearels, “I’ve

“It was very hard to
choose just one

makes Evan stand
out is how much he
does beyond what is
regularly required of
him,” said Mrs. Oyan.
“Just because he
probably absorbs

“It was very hard to

amazing. He [Ryan] has

Baseball and Softball face
new season challenges By: Austin Shakespeare
Baseball season is underway
and the skyhawks are working
hard every day to have a suc-
cessful season this year.
New head coach Doug Wag-
ner has taken over a team that
has a lot of experience playing
baseball at the varsity level but
they are going to continue to
work hard day after day this
year.
“We have experience,” said
Wagner. “But we are going to
work hard and push ourselves
every day dur-
ing practice
and even hard-
er during
games.”
The team
stumbled com-
ing out of the
gate, senior
pitcher Bryce
Harman un-
derstands what
it will take to
get this team going in the right
direction.
“Hard work and dedication to
what we are trying to accom-
plish,” said Harman. “If we
continue to do those then the
sky is the limit for this team.”
Senior catcher Austin Gam-
mon is noticing that his team is
beginning to gel and the talent
of some players is really start-
ing to show.
“We are working together and
really hitting on all cylinders,”
said Gammon. “Guys are get-
ting hot and really starting to
contribute in every way possi-
ble.”
Sophomore Cj Henderson
believes they can be a very good
team if they can get everybody
involved.
“We need everybody to con-
tribute,” said Henderson. “If
we can get a whole team effort
and everybody playing well at
the same time then we can be a
tough team to
beat.”
The Lady
Skyhawks soft-
ball season is off
to a slow start,
the team is 2-7
overall and 0-5 in
the district. The
Lady Skyahwks
defeated Annen-
dale and Lake-
land High Schools
in their annual
Sports Plus tournament held at
Bird for their 2 wins this sea-
son.
“We still haven’t got a win in
the district yet but we are close,
we just need to limit the errors
and we will be fine,” said Soph-
omore Stephanie Davenport.
The Lady Skyhawks are a very
young team with only 2 seniors
on the team, Sarah Bowles and
Arianna Mathews.
The districts have been changed into conferences and
have been revised.
Darius Gillus was Richmond Times Dispatch’s player of the
week.
Students participate in Richmond’s Color Me Rad race.
Girls varsity soccer goalie, Autumn Joyal, has had an averages
of over 10 saves a game.
Austin Gammon signs to Virginia Wesleyan for baseball.

Field Hockey team offers a
summer conditioning camp By: Christian Rist
With the end of the school year
comes the development of next
year’s sports teams. There will be
a Field Hockey summer camp
being held on June 23-26 and
other one held on July 8-11. If
there are any girls interested in
attending go to the front office for
a brochure. If enough girls sign
up it’s likely that the camp would
offer a team discount.
“I went to the same field hockey
camp last summer, it was hard
work but it was worth it. It helps
you with your basic skills, but
also helps you pick up a few new
tricks,” said senior Olivia Doyle.
Even if you don’t attend the
summer camp, Bird’s field hockey
coach, Coach Seal, welcomes any
girl with an interest in playing to
come out to conditioning
“I could care less if you have
any experience, all I want is to
have girls who are team players,
are committed to the team, and
have a competitive spirit ,” said
Seal.
The goal is to have the girls
start training in May and carry
that out through the end of the
school year. Then in August they
will hold try outs and condition
before their first game.
Freeman’s PE students
run in Color Me Rad
By: Amanda Sanford
Tra
ck
Freshmen from Ms. Freeman’s
PE class recently participated
in Richmond’s Color Me Rad
race as a project assigned for
the end of the year. Students
had to prepare for the race 8
weeks prior to running.
“Attendees had to design an 8
week workout plan for them-
selves and complete it before
the race,” said Ms. Freeman.
The
race
had
color
stations
set up
through
differ-
ent
points
of the 3
mile
race. Racers had to run through
them to have a packet of color
burst on them.
“I enjoyed running through
the different stations of color
packets and crossing the finish
line as a finished product. Eve-
rything was colorful,” said
freshman Savannah Hazelett.
The Color Me Rad race is held
worldwide. The Color Me Rad
chooses one local charity to
donate to after it is completed
in your community.
“I would suggest this to any-
one
because
it’s a
good
social
experi-
ence
and it
benefits
a great
cause,”
said
freshman Haleigh Sutton.
The Richmond race donated
its proceeds to the Special
Olympics of Virginia.

Bird athletes cheer on
the SOLs at schools By: Emilee Parham
Bird’s athletes pepped up
elementary and middle school
students with the 2nd annual
Work Week at the U. All the
athletes and pep band piled
onto the buses and made stops
at Salem Church Middle and
Elementary, Falling Creek
Middle, Ecoff, Carver, Bell-
wood, and O.B. Gates Elemen-
tary to root them on for their
SOLs.
Students walked into their
gyms thrilled by the sound of
basketballs hitting the floor,
cheerleaders shouting, and the
pep band playing. Dr. Hebert
greeted the kids then passed
the mic over to seniors Jay
Anderson and Bryce Harman to
pump up the crowd.
“I enjoyed getting the kids ex-
cited for their SOLs,” said sen-
ior Jay Anderson
The boy’s and girl’s basketball
teams started the pep rallies by
dunking and shooting baskets.
This year Dr. Hebert added a
fun twist to the rally by invit-
ing the guest school’s basket-
ball team to join the Skyhawks
on the court. Jay Anderson
then proposed a basketball
competition between the
schools. Two boys and girls
were selected from the crowd,
and they shot hoops for points
against a fellow Skyhawk.
Midway through the rally, the
State Champions in football,
track, and wrestling were
called center court and they
shared their advice on how to
do their best and pass the
SOLs. They encouraged them to
eat well, get plenty of rest, and
make your parents proud. To
further the crowd’s excitement
both the football and basketball
cheerleaders preformed SOL
themed routines as they
cheered them to get “fired up”
over their tests. Senior Jay
Anderson even prepared an
SOL related rap for the kids to
enjoy.
“Be extraordinary and never
settle for the average,” said
senior Jay Anderson
Participants also switched up
the roles during the rallies,
cheerleaders tried their hand at
conducting the pep band and
members of the girl’s basketball
team cheered. The Harlem
Shake sensation made its way
into the rally, it started with
one cheerleader. Soon the
whole basketball team, football
team, and cheerleaders were
dancing .
“I liked when the basketball
players and cheerleaders were
all clapping and jumping,” said
fifth grader Madisen Kramb.
At the end of the SOL pep
rally the participants flung
wrist bands with “WORK
WEEK AT THE U” into the
crowd and the excited kids
went wild. The rallies are an
annual event and more stu-
dents will be visiting the
schools before next year’s SOLs.

Hall Talk
By: Natasjha Isidoro
Everyone has a superpower they dream of, no matter how old,
young, tall, or small they are. Would you rather have the power to
soar gracefully through the sky, or the power to ace all of the tests
and exams that are thrown your way? The super Skyhawks below
revealed what their powers would be.
“I want to read minds!” said senior Allecia Taylor
“Invisibility,” said senior Kimberlee Holness
“Green Lantern powers,” said senior Kendall Seeley
“Teleportation, so I don’t waste money on gas,” said senior Tim Cejka
“Speed,” said senior Samantha Gomez-Vega
“Super strength!” said senior Na’Quasia Dickerson
“Time freeze,” said senior Jatani Terry
“Travel through space and time,” said senior Jordan Gadson
“To control zombies so I could start the zombie apocalypse,” said
freshman Kaela Bowers.
“Laser eyes,” said sophomore John Barnes.
“Telekinesis,” said sophomore Emily Alonso.
“Invisible teleportation,” said sophomore Precious Rowe.
“To be really tall,” said sophomore Femi Ogunbade.
The evolution of a high
school student Did you spot all
of the graduation
caps?
Graduation caps are not just
festive hats wore for commence-
ment, they have a meaning.
Everyone believes they are
worn to embarrass us or cause
terrible hat hair, but they rep-
resent academic success.
Originally these “mortar
boards” were worn by priests,
this set them apart from every-
one with the symbolism of high-
er intelligence.
Tassels aren’t just fun to play
with either, they are important
too. Once they are moved from
the right side of the cap to the
left, it symbolizes “leaving”
high school.
Dear Scottie,
Graduation is about to hit
and believe it or not… I don’t
want to leave high school! Tests
are easy, I sit next to the cute
and smart girl in AP, and eve-
ryone here knows my name.
What can I do in order to never
graduate? Please help… I don’t
want to be eaten alive by col-
lege.
Sincerely, Peter Pan Wannabe
Dear Peter Pan,
This is an easy fix, just
BREAK ALL THE RULES.
Don’t bother parking in the
senior lot, instead go straight
for the faculty lot. If you want
to be kicked all the way back to
kindergarten, park in the prin-
ciple’s spot. Do you ever get so
mad that you just want to flip
your desk? This is your prime
chance to do it. Pop quiz in
Spanish? NOT ANYMORE
(This is the part where you flip
your desk.) If that doesn’t pre-
vent you from graduating than
during lunch, declare a food
fight. Teachers will have a fit
with mashed potatoes stuck to
their face, lunch ladies will
mourn the loss of their meat-
loaf, and your classmates will
hate you… but it’s okay be-
cause they will be graduating
and you won’t. Now if that
doesn’t knock you down a
grade, then you must fail all
your classes. I mean, who say s
the answer to “Who wrote Mac-
beth?” isn’t banana… that was-
n’t the book you read. If you
somehow manage to graduate
after all that folly, than make
an exit no one will forget. When
you go to receive your diploma,
barrel roll across the stage. At
least then you’ll make it into
the yearbook for coolest gradua-
tion exit.
Sincerely, Scottie
