This fall semester has
continued to bring suc-
cess to Epsilon Chapter
as we continue to en-
courage our members
to grow Spiritually,
Scholastically, and So-cially. We had a great
homecoming with Alpha
Omicron Pi and Theta
Xi, and it was great to
see so many alumni at
the tailgate and around
the house for the foot-
ball game. We’ve now
transitioned into Varie-
ties, where practice is
just starting up. The
chapter recently had
two members elected
onto the Interfraternity
Council, with Caleb
Mueller elected as a
Vice President of Re-
cruitment and Jon Bau-
mert elected as the Vice
President of Philan-
thropy. In addition,
Tom Gavin was se-
lected to Greek Week Central as a Sponsor-
ship Co-Chair. Speaking
of Greek Week, we re-
cently received our
Greek Week pairing,
and we’ll be with Alpha
Chi Omega and Alpha
Tau Omega this coming
spring, which we’re very
excited about. In addi-
tion to the chapter’s
involvement around the
Greek community,
members have contin-
ued their involvement

As chaplain of the fraternity, it is my goal to spur on my brothers towards a faith centered life. The college years are often centered on finding your own personal identity; whether you’re a book worm, a sports fanatic, or an ad-venture seeker, college is the place where people often discover what truly motivates them. Here at Beta Sigma Psi we know that “a life rooted with Christ, in God, is the only true goal of human existence,” so, it’s truly a bless-ing living with 50 other men who know that their only hope is in Jesus and that’s the main motivating factor behind our studies, the relationships we build, and the activities we participate in. We face many challenges to our faith on a daily basis, but we find rest in the glory of our Savior and the future we have in Him. The late William Brad-ford said, “as one small candle may light a thousand, so the light here kindled hath shown unto many, yea in some sort to our whole nation.” I have no doubt that the lives we live in Iowa State’s Greek community, even if they are just one small candle, show the light that we have received to the many people we interact with every day. Merry Christmas and a
Happy Holiday. This is the
season when we know
what really matters, family
and friends. Our hearts are
filled with joy and happiness
as we count our blessings.
Several of our men are
moving on. Jake Vanderslice,
Cody Clausen, and Alex
Cutler are graduating. Nick
Deasy is spending a semes-
ter in Rome, Brandon Trent
is getting married, and many
new faces will be appearing
in the house. Our new asso-
ciates are ready for the next
semester and have learned
how Beta Sigs get everything
done. This is an outstanding
class of young men. This
semester activities and stud-
ies have kept everyone quite
busy. Our Yell Like Hell was
awarded Best Actor and we
were very fortunate to get
painted. We placed Second
Overall in Lawn Displays
and our banner received
Third Overall. Practice for
Varieties is well underway.
There is truly never a dull
moment. Finals are just here
and the Christmas Holiday
not far behind. The Christ-
mas Tree is decorated in
the foyer, bright lights are
glowing outside, and snow
will be falling soon. Happi-
ness fills our hearts at 2132
Sunset. We pray that the
New Year will be good to
each of you. Warm wishes,

relationships with the guys
like I normally do.
But Christmas is a time of
reconnecting with family and
friends through Christmas
cards and holiday gatherings.
I look forward to creating
and reestablishing connec-
tions with the house as
things get back to the new
normal. And I’ve been glad to
connect with the men of
Beta Sigma Psi as they con-
tinue to live out their faith.
They usher every Sunday at
the late service. They serve
as Sunday School teachers
and play in the music
groups. They help move
furniture for someone in
need, and rake leaves for
those who can’t do that
themselves. Their participa-
tion in Memorial’s 75th anni-
versary celebration on
Homecoming Weekend
added much to the service.
Even as I’ve felt discon-
nected, I’m grateful for the
connection we have to each
other through Christ.
-Pastor Dave
This semester has been the
most disconnected I’ve felt
from the men of Beta Sigma
Psi. Pastor Mark was hospital-
ized with pneumonia at the
beginning of September, and
was out six weeks recovering,
so I stayed busy at Memorial.
My wife and I welcomed a
little girl into our family in the
middle of October, so I’ve
stayed busy in my personal
life, as well. (Fortunately, Pas-
tor Mark was back in the of-
fice when that happened.)
Being pulled in all of those
different directions meant I
haven’t had the time to build

This year the men of Beta
Sig have been very involved.
This semester I have tried
to sweeten up the men by
making two desserts every
day as well as cook foods
that the men will enjoy. I
have also been trying to
mix up my cooking by ex-
perimenting with new
healthy meals. This year I
have tried to not
make much of a mess for
the K-Crews to clean up. As
many of you know, each
year for the composite pic-
ture I try to have a different
look. The last two years I
have let my hair grow. It is
know a little over my shoul-
ders. I keep it in a nice "Man
Bun", which is the look that
is in; I think it looks
good. However, last week
Memorial Lutheran had a
fundraiser to raise money for
the Ames High School to
help pay for the cost of their
trip the 2016 LCMS Youth
Gathering. The privilege of
cutting my hair was auc-
tioned off, with the Beta Sig
Men placing the highest bid.
I hope to get pictures of
this for all of you to see.
Peace, Love, and Joy, with
our Lord,

Yell Like Hell
“Texas Transformation: A Cin-
derella Story”. There were
roughly 85 participants in our
pairing, roughly 30 from Beta
Sig this year. Participation
was great: the Sophomore
class and Freshman really
contributed to the number,
but I cannot forget to men-
tion the talent and experi-
ence our few Juniors and
Seniors brought. This year,
the Co-Chairs from all the
houses decided upon leading
the pairing in a friendly,
down to earth, relatable kind
of way. After last year’s near
tyranny by the sorority's Co-
Chair, we all felt challenged
to make this year both more
enjoyable and more success-
ful than last year. We ac-
complished both! Not only
were the participants having
more fun, but us as Co-
chairs managed to keep it
friendly and civilized. Being
painted for the first time in
four years, we were cut
after Second Cuts due to
losing too many points on
time, but regardless, moving
on to second cuts rekin-
dled that fire for Yell Like
Hell that had started to
burn out. This should hope-
fully allow us to retain many
participants and get many
more for next year! Our
lead character, The Narra-
tor, a Theta Xi, did go on to
win the award of Best Lead
Character! We can’t wait
till next year where we have
the goal of making to Finals
and still enjoying the experi-
ence there!

This year’s YLH was a suc-
cess! We made it our goal to
be painted this year and to
enjoy getting that far! For the
first time in four years, Beta
Sigma Psi’s pairing passed First
Cuts and was painted for Sec-
ond Cuts! Our pairing con-
sisted of Alpha Omicron Pi
(AOII) and Theta Xi, a small
house on Welch. who per-
formed a Cinderella themed
skit. It was a hard fought
battle with the ferocious AOII
co-chairs who demanded Cin-
derella as the theme, but for
all Beta Sig’s effort to secure
Jurassic Park as our theme, it
was taken by another pairing
before us. Which turned out
to be a blessing for us; all the
co-chairs knew Cinderella
through and through which
lead to a comical, charming,
and well written skit titled

about it a lot and we plan
to welcome at least 10
seniors at our house for
that weekend to really get
a jump on the recruiting
for next fall. This event is
incredibly important as it
marks the start of official
recruitment for incoming
freshman. Our expecta-
tions and determination
are high, so I feel confident
that Caleb, Harry, and I can
bring in a group of good
Christian gentlemen to
strengthen the existing
ranks at Beta Sigma Psi.

With our fall pledge class well
on their way to activation,
Caleb Mueller and I turn
our attention at trying to re-
cruit a spring pledge class of
about 5-10 good men. We
are very excited about the
undergrads with whom we
have been talking and expect
to be able to meet our quota.
Newly elected recruitment
chair, Harry Daubitz, and I
are already looking to next
year’s fall pledge class by pre-
paring for a big recruitment
push during the spring term
and over the summer. Our big
spring recruitment event is
Greek Getaway, a weekend
where high school seniors can
come and stay at fraternities
and learn about the Greek
community here at Iowa
State. Harry and I have talked

This year for Varieties is unique to Beta Sig, because for the first time in about 10 years, we’re actually
considered a large house. Changes made by the Varieties Central Committee stated that large and small
houses are now decided strictly by participation in Varieties, which for the past few years, has been very
high for Beta Sig. This year, our pairing is with Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Omicron Pi, and Alpha Kappa
Lambda. We’ve been neighbors with AGD since moving to the Sunset house, so being paired with our neighbors has been a really good way to get to know the young women next door. The Varieties theme
this year is “Let the Beat Rock” so for our show, we incorporated a lot of rock and roll music into a Bill
and Ted-esque show, where instead of going back in time to talk to historical figures, they go back in
time and help famous rock stars write some of their biggest hits. Marty and his friend Z, preparing for
their final talent show as high school seniors, find a time machine amp that Marty’s mom, Dr. Brown has
been working on. After strumming a few notes, they find themselves in 1977 encountering Heart, and
Ann Wilson specifically. Already having a rocky relationship, Marty becomes upset with his mom when
he realizes that moving back in time is causing him and his friend to possibly miss their final show. They
help her write Barracuda, finding out that by helping her, they advance in time. They then move on to
the 80’s and 90’s meeting Joey Tempest of Europe and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith where they help write
The Final Countdown and I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing respectively. After this they make their way back home and Marty goes with his friend to play in their final talent show after fully repairing his rela-
tionship with his mother. We’re very excited to see how the show ends up looking with full choreogra-
phy, costumes, and polished and memorized lines from our leads. Our very own Harry Daubitz is play-
ing Marty, the main lead, and Caleb Larison is playing Z, another one of our three leads. Also in the
show is Trevor Bounds, playing Joey Tempest. We’re looking forward to semi-finals, and hopefully finals
shortly after!

New Member Educational Report
Recently Epsilon chapter has been recognized for the work that has been done to modernize and improve
our new member education program. With the new program more importance is placed on member’s per-
sonal growth and development. We work to improve our associate class’s leadership skills so that they are
better prepared to step into leadership roles in the house, in the Greek community, and on campus. This
year Epsilon Chapter’s incoming associate class was 21 members. Through-out the course of new member
education we have worked to teach our associates what it means to be a Beta Sig. The classes focus on the
fundamentals such as; our motto, mission statement, and the three S’s. Now the new member education
program also challenges associates to grow personally as a true Christian gentlemen. In addition to their time
in new member education the new class of Beta Sigs has also been working to grow the house’s image. Inside
the house new members have stepped up to take on leadership roles both on and off of the executive board.
Outside of the house new members have joined clubs, charities, and church organizations. All of this on cam-
pus exposure has gone a long way to increasing our house’s visibility on campus, and in the city of Ames. As
we turn to 2016 the class of associates will be taking their pin numbers and joining the ranks of the active
brothers, and they will continue to grow and explore what it really is to be a true Christian gentleman.

Fall 2015 Graduating Senior Salute: Cody Clausen: I will be graduating with a degree in Ag Systems Technology. After graduation I plan to return home to
our family farming operation and carry on our family tradition. Beta Sigma Psi has given me many opportunities to get
involved within the fraternity as well as the community. I have learned what it means to be a leader. During my time in
the fraternity I have been able to grow by serving various leadership roles within the house. During my time here I
have been able to serve as both Assistant House Manager as well as House Manager and Community Service Chair.
Through my experiences from these positions I will be better able to take an alternative approach to solving different
problems and better understanding the situation before reacting. These will greatly help me in any future situations that
I may arise during my future.
Alex Cutler: I will be graduating with a degree in Accounting from the College of Business. I have already accepted a full
time offer as a Project Analyst with Professional Computer Systems out of Denison, IA. During my involvement with
Beta Sigma Psi I have learned many things. Being a Beta Sig has taught me how to work harder than most. It was taught
me how that there are always people willing to help you, especially when you reach out and ask for help.
Jake Vanderslice: I will be graduating with a degree in supply chain management with a focus in operations. I have ac-
cepted a full time position with Menards, I will be completing a management training program and working within one of
the regional distribution centers stationed in Shelby, IA. Throughout my collegiate experience I have been very involved
within leadership. I served Beta Sigma Psi in a variety of roles ranging from recruitment, 1st vice president, scholarship
chair, treasurer and chaplain. I served on the Interfraternity Council as the Vice President of Recruitment in 2014 and
Vice President of Leadership Development in 2015. and I was awarded Councilman of the Year for 2015. Following
graduation I am looking to stay involved with the fraternity by serving the Beta Sigma Psi national and Ames alumni
boards. I look forward to my future endeavors and will always be grateful for the experience Beta Sig has provided me.
