• The word “media” is the plural of medium, which sadly,

does not have one specific meaning

• “An intervening substance through which something else

is transmitted or carried on”

• Therefore, a medium is something that serves as an

intermediary for transferring information

Brief History Of The Media

• obsessive exchange of news is one of the oldest human

activities.

• Messengers were appointed to bring word, criers to

proclaim it and busybodies to spread the word.

• Its not a coincidence that when we meet a friend we

spontaneously ask him, “whats up?”, “whats new?” or

“ne haber?”

The Internet

The history of the Internet begins with the

development of electronic computers in the

1950s.

Since then it has been used to share information.

The Internet allows for a more interactive

approach by allowing people to personally tailor

the news they receive via personalised web

portals, newsgroups, podcasts, and RSS feeds.

Brief Description Of Broadcast Media

Broadcast Media

Broadcast media are news reports

broadcast via radio and television.

Good examples of Broadcast media are

CNN, BBC, Aljazeera etc.

Print Media

The oldest media forms are newspapers,

magazines, journals, newsletters, and

other printed material.

These publications are collectively known

as the print media.

How Does The Media Affect Us

• It is such a defining factor in the way we do so many

things these days.

• The media has a lot to do with the kind of clothes that

you are wearing.

• It has a lot to do with who we fall in love, who we spend

time together with.

Concerns Over Media Impact

• In the 15th century, church leaders thought printed

bibles corrupt society.

• Parents felt the same about the first novels

• parents and teachers still feel the same about violent

games(gta), gangster rap videos, the internet, Facebook

etc

• the government thinks that the media can easily corrupt

the citizens and turn them against the rule of law.

Why Do We Worry About The Impact Of The Media On The

Society?

• The Media has the power to educate as much as to

miseducate.

• In the case of miseducation, it could create rift on the

bridge that connects people.

• The credibility of an information greatly lies on who is

providing it.

• It has the power to bring down governments.
