From Baron Carolus Loke and Baroness Isolda Fila Georgii

Greeting on the populace of the Rhydderich Hael,

It is our great hope that this missive finds all of you well and in good spirits. We again thank all who planned and participated in Brass Ring Thing. It was a great and fun event for such a worthy cause! Tourneys were held, warriors clashed and fencers drew steel. Music and merriment was the backdrop, and they finally chased the crowds away. Our artisans taught many interested folk. Axe and arrow found their mark.

Haelstorm occurred Sunday, and if you have not taken the opportunity to attend one of these I say to you that you are truly missing a feast without compare. In the words of own wag, things smelt divine, and it set tongues to wagging for such a fine repast.

Our championship beckons, and we implore all residents of the Hael to come out and contest to be our champion or to cheer on those who would represent us. With the 7 Pearls Heavy Weapons championship safely in the Hael, the other Barons look with greed and envy on us. Let us make a clean sweep of the rest. Let all know the skills of this Barony.

In closing, may you find peace and happiness. Be well, and try to stay cool. In Glorias Aethelmearc!

Amor ordinem nescit - Love does not know order. (St. Jerome) Baron Carolus Loke & Baroness Isolda Filia Georgii

From Baron Carolus Loke and Baroness Isolda Fila Georgii

(Report from May 22) Greeting unto the people of the Barony of the Rhydderich Hael, Carolus and Isolda , Baron and Baroness bring you news of War Practice and other events. From War Practice, we bring news of our Baronial Heavy Weapons Cham-pion, Darien and his conquests. In the Seven Pearls championship, which was round Robin in nature, he stood against all champions from the other

baronies. When the bouts were finished, there was a tie between Darien and Duke Ingvar. On a very hot and muggy field, in a best of three finals match, he traded powerful blows. In the tiebreaking match, he showed he had the true heart of a champion, and landed the final winning blow. Vivat! to our own Seven Pearls Cham-pion, the first to bear the shield that proclaims to all other baronies where that champion resides. Vivat! to the fighter that caused the baroness to do her “baroness dance”. I watched the skill and speed of Our fencers (granted, from the shade near the Heavy Weapons field) and their hard practice with the other fencers of AEthelmearc. They look to be a force if War must come later this year. No less praiseworthy are the efforts on the archery field of our own Wolfgang, a bowman of great skill; our own father, Caleb whose axes and knives strike the mark as regular as a drumbeat, the skill of Boudicea, whose portrait of the royalty, an entry into the Seven Pearls A&S competition. It was felt by the King & Queen as if they were gazing in a mirror (and her generosity in gifting it to them pleased them greatly). To all who participated in the contests, by marshaling or providing refreshment, my thanks. Great and praiseworthy is the work of the Tribe, and their tireless efforts to trade goods for the benefit of the Kingdom. From the Baronial encampment, We thank you one and all for the hospitality you showed to our cousins from Thescorre, Aquila and Bronwyn, and effort to assist the Baron from the Rising Waters, Baron Richard Larmer. You bring great praise on yourselves. The warriors of Woodland Watch demonstrated to all the benefit of their hard work and continual practice, proving a unit that was feared by all on attack and stood as firm as an oak in defense. The celebration of their prowess on the field was also, as usual, legendary. Kudos also to Baron Otto who has been selected as Knight Bannerette for our region. We look forward to the upcoming Brass Ring Thing XII, and invite all to join us! Isolda will be hosting the A&S tent and she invites all artisans to demonstrate their arts under the tent. She promises treats to those who do! We wish upon all good Haelies warm days and cool nights and look forward to the season of growth.

Amor ordinem nescit - Love does not know order. (St. Jerome)

Senechals Report: Dicea Ravenhair

Greetings, Friends! May was a good month for the Hael. We have been keeping our training up and are well on our way to give a strong showing at Pennsic. We presented an awesome presence at Æthelmearc War Practice and every one of you should be proud and pleased with your Barony. As we gear up for Baronial Champs, I encourage every one of you to participate in as many of the chal-lenges as possible. It is not just a great honor to rep-resent your Barony as a champion, but it is an unpar-alleled opportunity to meet and exchange knowledge and experience with champions from other Baronies. In May we had an amazing day of A&S at a new event site. We had a great deal of fun, got on well with the site staff, and got lots of project work done. We're well into the nice hot summer weather and there is very nearly a practice or gathering for every night of the week here in The Hael. Take a few min-utes and check in on your neighbors. We're a big Bar-ony and we have lots of opportunities to carpool and work together to make sure that everyone is getting out to do stuff and meet people. I am so proud of all of the hard work and amazing things you've all done this month and I can't wait to see what you'll come up with for next month. Rhydderich Hael am Byth! Results of May’s "Mini" Rapier Tournament As reported by Ice Dragon Combat Reporter Baron Caleb On the 9th of May a we held our monthly "mini" rapier tournament. The theme for this month, in honor of the 510th anniversary of Columbus's 4th voyage, was going to be a barricade battle. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, the barricade battle was blocked by a vast, immovable wall. All was lost; until I remember that it was also the 520th anniversary of the death of Lorenzo "The Magnificent" de Medici. In honor of his death, we held a Heidelberg duel: face cuts only; no movement of the feet or off-hand are allowed. Ten fencers came out to stand toe to toe and slice each other's faces open (okay, they actually came out to fence in a barricade battle, but it was as if there was something there preventing them from reaching that goal). Ten fencers, standing toe to toe, trying not to stab each other, or fall over. In the end, Baron Caleb "das ist was sie sagte" Reynolds came in third place with 18 points. Don Behrend von "haben Sie an Ihnen" Elmendorf and Lord Finn O "Ich spreche nicht Deutsches" Connail tied for second place with 19 points each. And Lord Alexander "Ich gewohnt nicht zu, noch zu stehen" DuLac won with 20 points, and, in honor of Lorenzo "His Mother called him The Magnificent" de Medici, won a chocolate bar.

Kingdom Awards

Kingdom awards are Titles given by the King and Queen to recognize various levels of merit in vari-ous activities. Though winning awards should not be the reason why you do the SCA, it is always nice to recognize someone for their hard work. This issue will be hiliting the 1st level awards as everyone can take part in nominating someone for one of these awards A.O.A. which stands for “Award of Arms”. This is generally the first award that someone will earn in the SCA. It is given for general participation and is usually granted after one year. If someone has been active in the SCA for over a year taking part in and of the following: service, martial, the arts and sciences, attending demos and meetings. It is generally given to a person who shows that they are serious about their involvement in the SCA. With such they receive the title of Lord or Lady and may display their personal arms.

The Next Section of awards still considered in the first level are known as “Orders”. Orders reflect some level of achievement in the Service, A&S, and martial a little above that general participation.

The Order of the Keystone: For service, auto-crating and teaching. The order's badge is: Or, on a keystone gules an escarbuncle ar-gent.

The Order of the Golden Alce: For all martial actvities. The order's badge is: (Fieldless) A stag's head cabossed per pale Or and gules.

The Order of the Sycamore: For Arts and Sci-ences and teaching. The order's badge is: (Fieldless) Three sycamore leaves conjoined in pall per pale gules and Or.

The Order of the Golden Stirrup: “given for authenticity in appearance while performing a martial activity, includ-ing research and teaching with an emphasis in visual merit, not skill level. “ * From the Aethelmearc Heraldry Page. No badge as of this article.

Hael vs. Canton Bocce Championship Game Comes down to last throw

By Ice Dragon Bocce Reporter Brother Thadeus The unofficial Bocce Champions of the Rhydderich Hael and the Canton of Beue Fleuve did meet on the neutral grounds of the Bocce Pitch of Herontir’s Harvest Raid event site. The Roman of Beau Fleuve and the Sicilian of the Rhydderich Hael did meet in a battle of good sportsmanship under a hot sun and treacherous grass. Though an unsanctioned match by unofficial cham-pions, both carried the prides of their lands upon their shoulders and the bragging rights on each skilled throw. The grass of the pitch was treacherous and hid almost every polina tossed. Both competitors showed great sportsmanship in helping each other gauge and spot the hidden target. The Hael’s unofficial Champion took an early 2 point lead, but the craft Roman kept matching the score. Each time the Roman would tie it up the Sicil-ian would manage to grab two more points to regain the lead. This tug of war went this way for the entire match. The Cantons unofficial Champion was the master of the short thrown polina scoring many of his points

on the shorter throw. The Sicilian did very well at the farther thrown polina. It was a back and forth battle. Both competitors needed to keep hydrated as the sun was beating down upon them. With pride of the lands they represented on the line they battled up and down the pitch giving no quarter. The match raged on for over an hour. The bocce balls were greatly effected by the pitches unyielding breaks, pitfalls and speed changes, This was not the ground oyster shell lined level pitches of the aristocracy. These were the over grown unpredictable bocce courts of the common man. The score was tied at 20. The Sicilian of the Hael held the polina and readied for what would be the final pass to choose the winner. Considering how the Roman dominated the short game, the Hael Unofficial Champ threw the target long. With his last Bocce throw, the Hael won the unoffi-cial bout with by placing his ball within inches of the polina. There were no crowds, no fanfare, no court an-nouncement or scrolls, but there was great battle on the Bocce pitch that day. Both The Canton and the Hael can be proud of their unofficial champions for they conducted themselves well. Vivat! Vivat! Vivat!

Have you experienced a Haelstorm? A Review by Maeve It appears the monthly gatherings at Tiercelin and Jock’s has gotten a new name, “Haelstorm”. I have been to pretty much every one and they are each different in some ways and similar in others. There is always good food, camaraderie, and some tomfoolery. We have yet to indulge in the swimming pool yet… This past Haelstorm was a medieval version of Chopped/ Iron (Bronze?) Chef. The mastermind of this was Wolfgang. He gathered a bunch of ingredients, some of them strange, placed them into baskets and challenged those there to “make something medieval”! I was an observer, as I had a scroll to finish for the upcoming baronial champs... Rhiannon had the most unusual combination of ingredients, her basket in-cluded beef tongue! This prompted many jests from Jock about hanging it in a chimney for 2 weeks to smoke... We kept telling him that we don’t have that kind of time. My daughter Erin had a simple group of ingredients... chickpeas, almond milk, onion, garlic and cream cheese. (Wolfgang was thinking a garlic soup) Erin made a hummus with a bite! Katrin taught Erin how to make naan and that was a success! So, after much activity in the kitchen and good natured humor, it was time to devour the evidence... A cheese and chard tart, a Cornish game hen, a bunny, a lentil dish, chickpea and parsley salat, and smelt…and of course the beef tongue... with a dessert of parsnip and apple pie. There was plenty of wine to ac-company all the wonderful dishes. At the end of the meal, Wolfgang and everyone declared that Rhiannon was the winner of the first Hael Iron Chef challenge. She took difficult combination of ingredients and made several tasty dishes... Vivat! Rhiannon! These Haelstorms are for everyone, whether you cook or not... Come and sew, scribble, play with string, leather or whatever. There is plenty of space, good food, good fun... Hope to see more of you at the next one. Lady Maeve.

June Hael Storm Mystery Basket Challenge

As reported by Wolfgang Starcke A challenge was issued to the chefs of the Hael: Draw a random basket of mystery ingredients and use them in combination with a pantry of Southern French spices and common items to prepare a re-move for a country lords' feast. The chefs had ac-cess to a number of cookbooks as well as internet access for research and approximately five hours to prepare the dish(es). The challenge was answered by a few brave chefs, who drew the following baskets randomly: Katerin Starcke, Mystery Basket #1: Whole Rab-bit, Chickpeas, Turnips, Raisins Ysabeau Tiercilin, Mystery Basket #2: Smelt, Kas-seri Cheese, Swiss Chard, Almonds Rhiannon Elandris, Mystery Basket #3: Beef Tongue, Lentils, Mushrooms, Leeks Morgan Elandris, Mystery Basket #4: Cornish Hen, Artichokes, White Beans, Calvados (Apple Brandy) Wolfgang Starcke, Mystery Basket #5: Apples, Dates, Parsnips, Farmers Cheese At the last minute, novice chef Erin stepped up and tried Mystery Basket #6: Chickpeas, Cream Cheese, Almond Milk, Garlic, Onion A whirlwind of activity consumed the kitchen for the next several hours as we tried to use every uten-sil and cooking vessel that our host possessed. The feast, as it played out: From basket #6 A garlic, cheese and chickpea dip with flatbread

From basket #1 Chickpea and parsley salad with a garlic lemon dress-ing Civy of Hare (rabbit braised with red wine, vinegar, stock and spices) Mashed turnips with raisins From basket #2 Grilled smelt with grape almond sauce Torte Genovese (chard and kasseri quiche) From basket #3 Roast beef tongue with bacon and leeks Lentils with mushrooms cooked in stock and wine From basket #4 Cornish hen with apricot and brandy sauce Sauteed Artichokes & white beans From basket #5 Parsnip Torte with apples & dates With an additional sideboard of sourdough bread from Katerin, olive bread from Morgan and a flatbread cold pizza by Maeva and of course, what French meal would be complete without two bottles of red wine. Everyone present ate and ate, then ate some more! It was agreed that all chefs had prepared very tasty dishes, but all were amazed at how well the beef tongue had turned out and the effort involved in cook-ing it. Thus Rhiannon Elandris was pronounced the winner of the challenge. Special thanks to all of our attendees, especially the clean up crew! To all other chefs out there, hone your skills and prepare for the fall edition of the challenge...coming to a gathering near you after Pennsic! ~Wolfgang Starcke

Demo Coordinators Report

Herein Lies the Chatelaines Report Submitted by Lady Maeve

This being the Chatelaine Report for the Month of June. We are now entering demo season, and I would like to ask everyone in the Barony and Canton to assist in any way they can when there is a demo. As we all know, this is our public relations time and we can make contacts with new members as well as possi-bly gain new sites to hold our events. I want to thank Magnus for stepping in for Brass Ring Thing, I am sure he did a great job as always. The gold key has feast gear items now thanks to Mas-ter Augusto. Hopefully we can utilize and keep track of it effectively. My report to kingdom for the second quarter has been submitted and has been received. In service, Lady Maeve Ni Siurtain.

HaelStorm A review by Wolfgang I'll have a longer write up for the Ice Dragon once people get there full recipes and such back to me (hint! hint!) Five great chefs of the Hael dared the mystery baskets: Rhiannon Elandris, Morgan Elandris, Ysabeau Tiercilin, Katerin Starcke and myself Special credit to our late arriving novice chef, Erin who took on a special reserve basket. The contents of the baskets ranged from the relatively common such as cornish game hen and smelt, to the rather more exotic rabbit and whole beef tongue. Much chaos ensued in the kitchen, as we pro-ceeded to use nearly every cooking implement and vessel :) Our acclaimed winner of the day was Rhian-non, who not only took on the mighty beef tongue and rendered it edible in a mere 5 hours but also produced a simply wonderful lentil and mushroom side dish. (Full menu and list of basket contents to follow in the complete write up!) Thank you to all who dared to cook and to all those who came to eat the evi-dence! ~Wolfgang

Greetings, The Book of Lists is being updated. There is an up-dated Baronial Champs announcement including the Feast menu. And soon the Melee Muster page will have more info. ~ In Service, Juliana, Your Friendly Neighborhood Webminister

From the A&S Mistress Submitted by Lady Alicia Hennenberg Now that we are firmly into summer, that does not mean that A&S needs to be put aside. Pennsic

is fast approaching and is one of the biggest opportunities to learn something new. Take some time this year to see what people are teaching and learn something new. This coming week our own Dicea, our own A&S champion has challenged all of us to compete in the A&S championship. I encourage you to do so. It's a wonderful opportunity to showcase your work and the barony. The A&S day this past month was also a great day. Favors were made for the fighters, scroll cases were made and many people complete work on scrolls. I hope to plan another one in the fall after Pennsic so people can share what they have learned. Also share what you have learned with Alinor our Kingdom officer. She is looking for stories to and projects to put in the kingdom newsletter. Here's what I learned this week, freeballing needlework designs is not that hard and much less stressful In Service Alicia Hennenberg

From the Chronicler That Guy Phil

Greetings from your Happy Go Lucky Neighborhood Chronicler, And the madness has started. The amount of events, practices and preparation hits an all time frenzy this time of year. We have seen War prac-tice, Crown Brass Ring Thing, Champs, and Academy come and go. Next up is Pax, Celtic fire, a number of others and eventually Pennsic. Its crazy! Start your Pennsic prep and camping purchases now. It will August before you know it. The Hael has hosted some great events and I will do my best to make sure they are covered. This issue is so big already that I will have to make an-other just for Champs. Thanks to those that have sent in write ups and reports. There is some great reading in this issue and I hope you take the time to read them all. I particularly like the Hael Storm coverage and you will love part four of Magnus’s “How to Make an Axe Cover”. I will be stepping down as Chronicler in Decem-ber. This has been amazing fun, but its time for someone else to enjoy the office. I will be calling for resumes in the fall. Enjoy the Summer. The of-fice comes with an awesome Deputy Miriel who generates great ideas as well as collecting articles and photos. I admit I go over board with the is-sues but that is my choice. They need not be this big. I’m just crazy! It’s really a good time doing this!!!! I hope you all enjoy YIS That Guy Phil

Fight Practice

Join us ever Wednesday from 6:30 to 9:30 PM at the Elks Cub for Fencing and Heavy Weapons Practice. The Elks club is located at 33 Legion Parkway Lancaster, NY 14086-2553 (716) 685-1478. There is a $5 donation col-lected to pay for the hall.

Dies Irae 13th Century

Attributed to Thomas of Celano, disciple of St. Francis of Assisi, the poem vividly portrays the reality of Judgment Day in the medieval mind.

Its somber cadences - Dies irae, dies illa / Solvet saeclum in favilla, / Teste David cum Sibylla -

echo today in Masses for the dead:

Dreaded day, that day of ire, When the world shall melt in fire, Told by Sybil and David's Lyre.

Fright men's hearts shall rudely shift,

As the judge through gleaming rift Comes each soul to closely sift.

Then the trumpet's shrill refrain, Piercing tombs by hill and plain,

Souls to judgment shall arraign....

When the judge his seat shall gain, All that's hidden shall be plain, Nothing shall unjudged remain.

The Brass Ring Thing XII

“Thank you to all who helped make the 12 the Brass ring festival a great success. De-spite the uncertain weather, we still did well and people had a great time. There would be no event without you, so your participation is sincerely appreciated. Please extend this thank you note to all of your SCA members. They are so nice to work with.

-Rae Proefrock Museum Director

Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum "Once Around is Never Enough!"

“I'd like to express my appreciation and gratitude for all who came out on Friday and Saturday to help make The Brass Ring Thing XII a success for the Herschel Carousel Mu-seum. It turned out to be a nice day and proved, once again, what a great Barony and Canton we have here, as wells how amaz-ing our friends and cousins from near and far are! Thank you to all” -Morwenna (Six time Brass Ring Thing Autocrat)

“I just wanted to thank everyone again for all they did to make Brass Ring such a wonderful event. I would start to list folks to thank and what they did, but it would truly be a list of everyone who attended! Our Barony is just amazing, Logan told me that a rep from the Museum said that without us, the museum would not exist!”

Report on Rhydderich Hael's demo called the Ring Thing. In the town of Niagara Falls, New York, there is the Herschel's Carousel Museum, complete with not one but two antique operating Carousel's. Every year in June the museum asks the local sca group to assist with their 'open house' or demo as they call it. The sca activities are those which are consistent with a full blown event. There were about 50 of our people there participating in the activities, Archery, fencing, heavy weapons, and thrown weapons were occurring during the whole day. There is no fee's for the sca participants, quite the contrary, the museum furnished all sca participants with vouchers for a free lunch. Which consisted of either a hot dogs or similar sandwich and a drink at the appropriate food stand. Our people freely wandered the facilities which was a old Carousel factory. In one room were woodworkers who were carving various projects from replacement horses to small items which were eventually put up for sale. Another room was a gift shop type area where many carousel type items were available for purchase as well. Another area held many items relating to history of the carousel. And finally the two Carousels themselves. Both are housed inside in large rooms. One is decorated more for children, and the large one, which is over 100 years old is for adults. If you were in garb your are permitted to ride for free. It is a fast moving machine. The weather for the day began cloudy and a bit rainy, but as the day progressed it continued to improve. There were several musicians in attendance. Who circulated thru the crowd. I personally stopped and listened to a Harper from Canada who was in attendance as well. There were magician's who entertained the children, Story tellers, and a gamer who had a dozen period games that the populace could learn and play. There were sca merchants hawking their wares. The whole thing used the museum grounds and areas belonging to a local school as well. There was a very large tent which housed the artisan's of the sca. Who delighted in talking with the locals who stopped by. All in all it was a good day, with smiles all around. The Hael's newest Baron and Baroness held a typical court at the end of the day. With thank you's being given to/and from the museum staff and those who were instrumental in arranging the events of the day. My day in the Hael. Master Baron Gwilym Gryffyn's Keep

Making an axe cover part four: Finishing the Project This month I present the final chapter of the axe cover tutorial. This part of the tutorial covers the coloring of the tooling, dying of the leather, and finishing of the edges. What you will need for this part of the project:

· Acrylic paint in the colors required for the choice of art work

· Basic paint brushes · Foam brushes for applying leather

dye and or stain · Edge slicker · Edge finisher · Leather dye or stain · Leather finish Gloves (Latex or rubber)

Artisans Corner It’s always a pleasure to be able to print a tutorial from one of our local artisans so that we can give it a try ourselves. The Ice Dragon’s new deputy Miriel Du Lac was able to get her friend Magnus (new deputy Castelan) to write down a tutorial based on an axe cover he had made recentlly. I thank Magnus for allowing us to publish this and hope others will be inspired to send in their tutorials as well.

For those that missed Part 1 & 2 of this “how to” it ap-pears in the January 2012 Ice Dragon and the February 2012 issues. Just open up those issue and read them.

After a long road the project is done. I’ll admit I glossed over a few finer steps in order to keep this tutorial at a reasonable size. As always if there are question, comments, or concerns send them to Magnus de Lyons at: [email protected]

Page 27: The Ice DraGon · Hael Storm Review by Wolfgang P18 Brass Ring Thing Section P21-25 Artsan Corner: Axe Cover Pt4 By Magnus P26-28 ... Cover Photo by Baron Caleb at the Brass Ring

Coloring the leather: There are several products used to color leather. The most common products I use are stains and dye. The colors produced by stains are not as drastic, and allow the rich depth and natural look of the leather to show through in the final product. Dyes tend to create a singular, often flat color effect. For this project I picked Fiebings Golden Oak leather stain (as seen below). It creates a rich but not overly dark color. Simply apply the stain in thin even coats using a foam brush and wipe off the excess with a clean soft rag. The stain will run a bit so work in a safe area and using gloves (latex for ex-ample) is a great idea for easy clean up. To add more detail I opted to dye the flat edge of the project with a darker stain. This is a bit fiddly, and requires a steady hand, so consider this step optional. If you don’t have darker stain or dye a similar effect can be achieved by applying several coats of the

lighter stain until it darkens. If a darker stain is used there is the risk it will bleed, drip, or run onto the lighter

The Ice Dragon June 2012 Issue P 27

The next step is to smooth (slick/finish) the edges of the project. This is not required, but does give the prod-uct a finished professional look. To slick the edge I use a product called gum tragacanth made (or at least origi-nally made) from the sap of a Middle Eastern legume. It’s a waxy gel like substance that is applied to the edges of leather and burnished with a smooth tool called a “slicker”. Simply apply the gum to the edges of the project and burnish (work in) until a smooth finish is achieved. If you don’t have access to a slicker you can use a plastic spoon or similar smooth object.

Page 28: The Ice DraGon · Hael Storm Review by Wolfgang P18 Brass Ring Thing Section P21-25 Artsan Corner: Axe Cover Pt4 By Magnus P26-28 ... Cover Photo by Baron Caleb at the Brass Ring

The Ice Dragon June 2012 Issue P 28

In projects like this however very sharp colors are needed to achieve the desired effect, and for me paint is the easiest way to accomplish this. Using normal acrylic craft paint I carefully painted the inner part of the Aethelmearc Escarbuncle white. Once this was dry I added some detail and shading with a touch of black paint as seen to right. Finally the outer edge of the Es-carbuncle is painted yellow. As an option the lines be-tween the red and yellow as well as the line between the yellow and the leather (noted with the black arrows below) can be outlined in black paint. I thought it would look a bit heavy handed so I opted to leave it as shown below.

After allowing the stain to dry for at least 24 hours the product is ready for painting. Normally I don’t like

painting leather tooling because it takes away from a bit of the natural look of the leather.

Once the paint is dry (allow 24 hours or more for this), the product is coated in leather finish to seal and water proof the paint and leather. I use simple spray on Super Shene (seen below). There are superior products, but I find Super Shene gets the job done and is easy to use. Give the Super Shene a good hour to dry before handling the cover.

THOMAS HOCCLEVE (or OCCLEVE), English poet, was born probably in 1368/9, for, writing in 1421/2 he says he was fifty-three years old.1 He ranks, like his more voluminous and better known contemporary Lydgate, among those poets who have a historical rather than intrinsic importance in English literature. Their work rarely if ever rises above mediocrity; in neither is there even any clear evidence of a poetic tempera-ment. Yet they represented for the 15th century the literature of their time, and kept alive, however faintly, the torch handed on to them by their "maister" Chaucer, to whom Occleve pays an affectionate tribute in three passages in the De Regimine Principum. Brewers Guild As Reported by Baron Caleb Reynoolds

The orange mead has finally been bottled (See page 16 of the December 2011 (XLVI) issue of the Ice Dragon). Unfortu-nately, the mead was bitter and very dry. Which is not what we wanted. Unfortunately, there is not enough time to explain how to fix this problem and still make it into the Ice Dragon. Will Baron Caleb be able to fix the mead? Is there enough room in the Ice Dragon for another one of his long winded lectures? Tune in next month for the exciting conclusion of Brewer-man. Same brewer time; same brewer channel.
