Welcome to our Global Executive Forum on Media and Communications

We are delighted you’ve chosen to invest some of your valuable time at the IBM Global Executive Forum on Media and Communications (GEF). Each year GEF provides a private venue for a select group of senior business leaders to explore the evolving state of affairs in the telecommunications, media and electronics industries. This year we will deal squarely with the challenging economic realities in which we find ourselves, while exploring future growth opportunities through collaboration and innovation. Our intent is to facilitate an exceptional networking opportunity that spurs deeper thinking, fresh ideas and new relationships.

The industries involved in this Forum have become central to defining the way people observe, react and respond to the massive changes occurring in the world today. The impact is felt on every level -- personal, professional, economic and societal – and this Forum is dedicated to exploring those influences by fueling provocative discussion about how we can shape our future.

Over the next day-and-a-half we look forward to a great dialogue with you and your colleagues. Thanks for being here.

Session 1: Embracing the New Economic EnvironmentAre we in “just another business cycle” or something deeper? The industries represented at this Forum are experiencing profound change. Many of us are driving that change by influencing the way the world conducts its business; interacts with one another; entertains and informs itself. How do we best lead in such turbulent times? Surely there is focus on value -- prudent, incremental efficiencies that sometimes feel more like a survival plan. Restructure. Preserve capital. Streamline operations. And then there are bolder plays such as merger and acquisition opportunities that may be uniquely attractive in this environment, if we act with speed and precision. It’s one thing to embrace change…but can we define it?

13.30 Session 2: Embracing CollaborationExperiments in collaboration are perhaps more prevalent among our Forum attendees than any other collection of industries. Together we’re creating markets, shaping cultural norms and bringing new economies into the mainstream. Communication and entertainment devices have redefined consumer behavior, while marketing and delivery arrangements between operators, manufacturers, programmers and other content providers have changed people’s everyday lives. Network and IT partnerships have restructured cost models while enabling greater flexibility and speed in the development of new products and services. But questions still outnumber answers. Can we expect more profitable partnerships between content, device and network providers? What will be the impact of the explosion in social networking, community-generated content and over-the-top video programming? Will “open” or “proprietary and unique” platforms prevail? And how are advertising and other monetization approaches impacting the overall customer experience?

08.30 Session 3: Building a Smarter Planet

Host and Moderator: Gary Cohen, General Manager, IBM Global Communications Sector

Imagine how much further we can progress as a planet in this era of pervasive instrumentation where almost anything – any person, any object, any process or service, any organization, large or small, is becoming networked, intelligent and part of the world’s digital fabric. We’re moving beyond the need for data and insight. We demand foresight. And not just into our own enterprise, but the macro environment that affects us as well. What is it we need to know -- and when precisely do we need the information -- to take strategic, timely, decisive action? The implications of this new age are profound indeed and our Forum participants all have an emerging role to play in it.
