How did it get to be April already! Time flies when you are having fun at New Sarum!

Aside from the weather this past weekend, the days are getting longer and the

temperatures are getting warmer. With spring comes mud and with mud comes

requests for extra clothing to be stored in your child’s backpack. At this time of year

our yard areas are very muddy so extra socks, pants, and shirts are helpful as our

students tend to become soiled throughout the day. We also encourage students to

have indoor shoes and outdoor shoes or rainboots. Dirt on our floors and in our gymnasium creates slip-

pery conditions that could lead to accidents. Thank you for helping to keep our students, staff, and

visitors safe.

With spring comes the review and completion of our safety drills for the current school year. Between

April and June, we are required to complete 3 fire drills, an Inclement Weather drill, and a Lockdown drill.

When practicing these drills, our staff review with students the need to be prepared in the event of an

emergency situation in a manner that is sensitive to the needs of our students.

April is going to be a very busy month at New Sarum. This edition of the Husky Howl is full of information

about upcoming events such as Grade 8 Grad photos, the Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast, a guest

speaker for New Sarum parents, Sarah Rosensweet, our first Kindergarten Open House and the April

Celebration Asssembly. In addition, we have included lots of photos of the awesome learning and

activities occurring at New Sarum. We hope that all of this information helps you plan for the month of

April at New Sarum.

We wish all of our Husky families an enjoyable Easter weekend. Please take the time to celebrate the

season and enjoy your time spent with the special people in your lives.

Sincerely,

Emergency Drills Explained

Fire Drills: We practice these drills in the event that there is a fire.

Inclement Weather Drills: We practice these drills in the event that we are alerted to severe weather in the area. Students practice covering their heads in areas that are determined to be the safest in the school.

NEW Hold and Secure and Lockdown only occur when school Administration is instructed to do so by the local Police.

Hold and Secure: In a hold and secure, classroom doors are closed so that the learning of our students can continue.

Lockdown: In a lockdown, classroom doors are closed and locked. Students sit quietly with their teacher in the safest area of the classroom. This will only be used in significant emergencies.

If Administration at the school decide that we need to secure an area of the school for first aid or safety reasons (other then when instructed by Police), we will make an announcement asking staff and students to remain in their classrooms until they are notified otherwise. For example, “We are currently dealing with a student/first aid issue in the Music hallway, students and staff are asked to remain in their classrooms until we notify you otherwise.”

Grade 2s embarked on a boat building chal-lenge. Using selected materials they planned, constructed, tested and then modified their boats to hold the greatest load (pennies).

Grade 3s became engineers and constructed strong and stable structures designed to hold the mass of a 1kg "Wiebe Weasel Westau-want" (much like the CN tower concept on a MUCH smaller scale!)

April 8th to 12th is Volunteer Appreciation

Week. The parents and community members

who volunteer at New Sarum Public School

enable us to provide many opportunities for

our students that we could not do otherwise.

Thank you!

Without you we wouldn’t have Husky Café,

field trips, the Volunteer Reading Program,

special presentations and events, fundraisers,

and the list goes on.

All of our volunteers are invited to join us for

our

Volunteer Appreciation

Check out the pictures from the Maple Syrup Gr 1/2 Trip!

Grade 2/3 Trip to Jaffa

Students had a FUNtastic time learning about and exploring birds and their habitats. We dissected mock "owl

pellets," used microscopes to view feathers up close, and recognized similarities between bird beaks and kitchen

tools! Our journeys through the forest with binoculars lead to some interesting discoveries. We spotted different

birds and tasted maple sap as it was pouring from the trees. We played games to learn about the food chain and

explored the interactive hands-on science museum.

. . Our Grade 6 Huskies recently discovered that "opposites really do attract" (negative electrons

and positive protons)! It was a hair-raising experience that certainly didn't seem static, but that's

exactly what was being created, static electricity.

We have Husky Spirit! We rocked our socks for World Down Syndrome Day!

CHARACTER EDUCATION RECOGNITION

On March 29th, we came together to celebrate Empathy at our March Celebration Assembly. We are so proud

of all our Huskies for demonstrating empathy each day at New Sarum. New Sarum is a wonderful place to be!

Our next assembly will be on Tuesday, April 30th at 3 pm in the New Sarum gym. The character trait we are

focusing on for April is RESPECT. Students are encouraged to demonstrate respect to others, to their surround-

ings and environment and self-respect.

Yard Clean Up: All Huskies Invited!

All Huskies and their families are invited to bring

their yard clean up energy, landscaping tools, work

gloves, and water bottles to the school on Saturday,

May 4th starting at 10AM. We are hoping to

beautify our front gardens with weeding and trim-

ming and the spreading of mulch. As well, we

would like to spread mulch in the areas that are

often muddy. Can’t wait to see you there!

Donations Wanted

Our Kindergarten and Primary Yards

are in need of outdoor toys such as

heavy duty cars and trucks, pails,

shovels, skipping ropes, bubbles, side-

walk chalk, etc. If you have gently used

items that your family is no longer using,

we would love to take them off of your

hands and out of your storage spaces.

Any gently used items,

office for distribution.

Thank you in advance for

thinking of our Huskies!

Topic: How To Raise Resilient Kids

Do you worry that your child gives up too easily or doesn’t know how to work toward a goal? We want our

children to have the tenacity and passion to work hard to reach their goals and to feel good about themselves and

their lives while doing it. This concept is captured by the old-fashioned word ‘grit.’

Today we recognize that grit – the resilience to recover after setbacks, difficult situations or disappointments –

is a major factor in a child’s success at school and a predictor of a happy and productive life.

But how do kids develop resilience? It requires more than letting them experience failure, although that’s part

of it. As parents we play a crucial role: to support our children so that they can grow and thrive in the face of life’s

challenges.

In this interactive talk with parenting expert Sarah Rosensweet, you will learn about resilience, why it’s

important, and how children develop ‘grit’. We will cover specific ways that you can support your child to foster

resilience, as well as the common mistakes that well-meaning parents make that hamper the development of grit.

Sarah Rosensweet is a certified peaceful parenting coach and educator. She lives in Toronto with her husband

and three big kids (ages 11, 14, and 18). Peaceful parenting is a non-punitive, connection-based approach that uses

firm limits with lots of empathy. Sarah works one-on-one virtually with parents all over the world to help them be

the parents they want to be and enjoy their kids again! More information is available on her website,

. COMMUNITY INFORMATION

HELP WANTED! CASUAL NOON HOUR SUPERVISORS

New Sarum Public School is very fortunate to have two noon hour supervisors on a daily basis that

provide supervision in our classrooms at lunch and on the yard during lunch recess. Sometimes we

need a casual noon hour supervisor to help us out on days when one of our regular NHSs are not

available.

If you are interested in being a casual NHS for New Sarum Public School and you are often available from 12:15 to

1:15 pm during the week days, please contact Mr. Zavarella or Mrs. Radauskas and we can work through the process.
