Study: Soccer Better than Jogging for Fat Loss Thursday, September 20, 2007

There's a new slogan for weight-watchers: Burn it like Beckham. A friendly game of soccer, a new study has found, works off more fat and builds up more muscle than jogging.

Soccer players don’t feel the pain!

Soccer Players

Adults who regularly kick around a soccer ball with friends have better heart and bone health, a new study found. Being a soccer mom usually means carpooling kids to games and watching them play. But new research shows that women who join in the fun and kick around a soccer ball can dramatically improve their bone and heart health.

1) Recreational soccer is easy to organise as intense, variable and

joyful training for untrained children, teens, adults and elderly

2) The intensity of small-sided soccer games is high and the

perceived exertion is moderate – even for participants with no

prior soccer experience and/or poor technical skills

3) Recreational soccer stimulates cardio-vascular, metabolic and

musculo-skeletal fitness for untrained individuals

4) Recreational soccer training causes multiple positive effects

on cardio-vascular risk factors: VO2max, heart function, muscle

capillarisation, BP, fat oxidation, fat mass and cholesterol

5) Regular soccer training causes muscle hypertrophy, elevates BMD

and improves muscle strength and postural balance, suggesting

that soccer training can lower the risk of falls and fractures
