MEDIUM BIO

Homeless Balloon is the music project of Norwegian composer and multimedia artist Helge Krabye. His background is in sound design and video editing, and he has composed original music for more than eighty television documen-taries, radio plays, fantasy stories and multimedia projects. He is known for combining acoustic instruments with experimental, electronic sounds. His mu-sic is inspired by both world fusion, electronica, acoustic, classical, jazz and film music. He has released six audio CD’s, one audio EP, a double digital al-bum and several digital EP's on his label 24 Chillout Music.Helge Krabye learned to play violin at the age of six, and he picked up the gui-tar as a teenager. He bought his first Tape Recorder (Tandberg) at the age of fifteen, and he started recording both instruments and physical sounds in the daily surroundings. After college, he was accepted to study Sound Engineering and Television in NRK (National TV in Norway). In his early thirties he started experimenting with computers, MIDI and synthesizers, and his background in classical music made his compositions suitable for moving pictures. Because he worked with instructors and producers in the Radio Drama Department in

LONG BIO

Homeless Balloon is the music project of Helge Krabye, a Norwegian com-poser, sound designer and multimedia artist, born in 1953 in Oslo, Norway. Helge has (under his real name) composed music for television documen-taries, radio plays, fantasy stories and multimedia projects as well as signa-ture melodies and musical jingles since the late 80's. In his music, he is known for combining acoustic and electric instruments with experimental, electronic sounds in a variety of music genres. Homeless Balloon has released six audio CD’s, one audio EP, a double digital album and several digital EP’s on his label 24 Chillout Music. The music is downtempo chill out grooves and ambient soundscapes inspired by acid jazz, electronica, world fusion, acoustic and film.Helges first name Helge is pronounced "hel-ge" ("hel" like in the word "hel-met", and "ge" like the two first letters in the verb "get". His family name Krabye is pronounced “krá-bi” (“kra” with a rolling “r” and an “a” like in “fa-ther”, and “bye” with an “y” like in the french word for “moon”: la lune, and to make it even more complicated, with a silent “e” in the end. Helges first instrument was a small, wooden zither that his grandmother gave him when he was four years old. At six, he started taking violin lessons and later played first violin in Nordtvet Skoles Strykeorkester (School String Or-chestra) in Oslo. His teacher Peter Hindar (well known for his performances with Hindarkvartetten) encouraged him to practice more, but he didn't have the patience. One day Peter Hindar caught him in cheating; he didn't read mu-sic, he played it by memory and by ear... That was the end of one era, but the beginning of another. Improvisation has always been what Helge loves. When he was 15, big boys were supposed to play guitar, not violin - and Helge quit the school orchestra. His grandmother gave him a violin, and he picked up the violin again after high school. Since then, he has often used violin in his recordings. With the Tandberg 1200X tape recorder he bought for the money he received at his Confirmation, he started composing music and creating new sounds. Very much inspired by Karlheinz Stockhausen and the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper" album, he developed an ear for sound. He was able to dub his guitar with noises and voices from the radio. One of the first compositions was "Song of the world", a montage of acoustic guitar, radio tuning and voice samples like Mr. Richard Nixon announcing the end of the Vietnam War and an overexcited radio dj promoting the (terrible) movie "Song of Norway".Music meant a lot to Helge as a teenager and young man, and he bought a lot of LP's and even made his own listening charts every week. He discovered "Astral Week" by Van Morrison, "Inner Mounting Flame" by John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra, "What's going on" by Marvin Gaye, the experimental music of Karlheinz Stockhausen and Terry Riley, as well as Mozart's "Sym-phony No. 40" with the great conductor Carlo Maria Giulini. When Pink Floyd released their "Dark Side of the Moon" and Stevie Wonder his "Music of My Mind" albums, Helge became very interested in synthesizers and electronic music.

After high school, he went to technical school in NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting Cooperation) to become a sound engineer. Here he was able to use profes-sional recording studios and instruments, and he played guitar with his class-mates. With a classmate, he was responsible for the innovative radio program "Lydbåndmix" ("Music Mix Tapes") where amateur musicians were invited to send in their own musical compositions. Several later to be well known musi-cians and singers were among the artists who were discovered through the program. When MIDI arrived in the late eighties, Helge purchased his first Macintosh SE (in 1987) with the MasterTracksPro MIDI sequencer and a Roland S-10 sam-pling keyboard, as well as one of the first digital multitimbral synthesizer: the Roland MT-32. He was working as a sound engineer and producer of the suc-cessful youth program "AB 8-12" in NRK, and he began composing jingles and instrumental music for the radio show. As he started to receive royalties from airplay, he was able to upgrade his studio and instruments and purchased the first affordable hard disk recording system for a personal computer (1989), "SoundTools" by Digidesign (later to be named ProTools). Helge used the equipment for composing jingles and creating original sound landscapes when he became responsible for the next youth radio program in NRK: "ABRS". In this program, that was broadcast every working day in the afternoon, he also programmed various interactive games in HyperCard and later Video Works II with sound effects and musical pieces built into the applications and the Macintosh computer connected to the radio mixer in order to create a rich sound design live on air. While sitting on the broadcast mixer with all the au-dio sources like studio mikes, record players and tape recorders, he and the program host in the studio pushed the virtual buttons on the Mac screen to trigger sound effect and musical pieces. Helge remember being quite ex-hausted after those daily radio shows, but it was great fun and also ahead of it's time!Helge first started to work as a sound designer and sound engineer in the Ra-dio Drama department in NRK in 1986, and director Kyrre Haugen Bakke al-lowed him to compose music for the play "The Magician's Nephew", one of the great fantasy books in the "Narnia Chronicles" by C. S. Lewis. Being in control of both music and sound design, was a nice responsibility! Later, Helge wrote his own story with music and sound effects for children, "Herr C og besteven-nen som ble borte". He also composed music for other producer's s fantasy stories and radio shows. In 1997, Helge felt that it was time to move on. He started to work with post production (sound) in NRK Fjernsynet (television), using AMS Audiophile and then ProTools. A couple of years later, he was responsible for doing the sound design for the documentary journalists in "Brennpunkt", and they invited him to compose music as well. Since then, Helge have composed original music for more than seventy television documentaries that have been broadcast by NRK.Helge also had a great interest in interactive media, and he programmed a special interactive HyperCard game called "Nysgjerrigper" for Norges Forskn-ingsråd in 1990, by first teaching himself HyperTalk. He also programmed the "Midt i Planeten" ("Worlds apart") with his friend Arnfinn Christensen - a com-puter game where the alien Gorx is guiding us through our solar system. The

game was included with the new Macintosh Centris multimedia computers that Apple started selling in Norway in 1993. By this time, the great Vide-oWorks II software for Mac had developed into MacroMedia Director, and he taught himself to program scrips with Lingo, the script language MacroMedia developed further and later used in their innovative Flash technology. (By the time this happened, Helge's interest and skills in programming had started to fade...)2001 was in a way a highlight in Helge Krabye's career as a composer for tele-vision, since the five part documentary series "Det gåtefulle Kina" (Mysterious China) was a success and was shown in several countries around the world the following years. Again, he worked close with Arnfinn Christensen who edited the whole documentary series on a small Macintosh (and created some stunning animations in Flash). A remix of the best music pieces from this se-ries was finally released on the CD "Mysterious China" by Helges music project Homeless Balloon in August 2007. In 2004, Helge composed original music for nature documentarist and photog-rapher Arne Nævra and his nine part television series "Villdyr og Villmark" ("Global Safari"), an adventure and wildlife series shot in Russia (Wrangel is-land and Kamchatka), Rwanda, India, Borneo and Alaska. Some of the music from this series is available as a remix on the Homeless Balloon album "Orien-tal Spaces" (2008).Helge also contributed to other artist's projects as a performer. He played acoustic guitar on the song "Fabel" on the Amethystium 2004 CD "Evermind" (2004), an album that climbed high in the ambient and new age charts around the world. He also played djembe, electric guitar (with Ebow) and Alembiq electric bass on the track "Moths Drink the Tears of Sleeping Birds" from the American ambient artist Kit Watkins' 2006 CD "SkyZone". Kit Watkins was one of the artists in the great progressive American band "Camel" in the early 70's, and he is a friend of Helge. In 2005, Helge began working as a video editor and post producer (in NRK TV), a profession that made it possible to combine all his experience from drama, storytelling, sound design and graphic design. He is a big fan of Eric Wenger (U&I Software) and his software tools ArtMaticPro, ArtMaticVoyager and Meta-Synth, and he have created several futuristic animations and graphics, which can be enjoyed in Homeless Balloon's music video's at YouTube and Vimeo.Even if Helge was very eager to start using MIDI and compose with samplers, his heart is beating stronger for using electric and acoustic instruments when composing and recording music. His taste for jazz and improvisational music has grown during the years. He has invested in quality instruments like acous-tic and electric guitars, various percussion instruments and a MiniMoog Voy-ager synthesizer as well as the great Prophet 6 by Dave Smith. He slowed down composing for television from 2006 and instead started concentrating on remixing his best music as well as composing new, independent pieces. In 2008, he sold most of his musical gear, except the acoustic and electric in-struments. In 2012, Helge's interest for electronic music and innovative soft-ware and synthesizers was growing, and he continued to compose music - this time even more eclectic and flirting with various musical genres. It doesn’t come as a surprise to those who know Helge, that he bought some of the

darkest instruments back and even set up a more complex home studio than ever. In 2014 he fell in love with the Elektron instruments, and he now owns both the Analog Keys, Analog Rytm and the Mono Maschine.Because of a row of misunderstandings and confusion about his name, Helge decided to release his music commercially under the project name "Homeless Balloon" from the spring of 2007. In August 2007, he released his first two commercial CD's, "Travel in Silence" and "Mysterious China", the very year he also celebrated his first twenty years as a composer. In August 2008, he re-leased the rest of the best of his compositions on four new audio CD's, "An-cient City", "Oriental Spaces", "Electronova" and "Hurry Slowly".In the spring of 2013, Helge began composing original music for television again, this time for a unique Nature Documentary Series named "Norske Naturperler" produced by Arne Nævra, the famous Norwegian Nature Photog-rapher and filmmaker. The Series has eight parts with amazing pictures from some of the wildest and most fascinating areas with Norwegian wildlife. The series has been broadcast in other countries as well. In the autumn of 2014, Helge released the best of these compositions - with several remixes and pieces not heard in the documentary series - on a 56 tracks double digital al-bum named “Music from Wild North”.Helge Krabye has had several licensing opportunities outside Norway as well, and he is currently offering some of his best music through Apollo Music in Denmark (check out www.findthetune.com for his music).

Homeless Balloon also has a Youtube Channel with music and animation. (See the «Links» -section later in this document.)

Homeless Balloon sounds Like: Enigma, Vangelis, Air, David Sylvian, Moby, Massive Attack and sometimes Pink Floyd.

"Første gangen eg hørte hørespillet Beaty Bow (1991), la eg ekstra merke til musikken. Eg har den på kassett - men det blir ikkje det samme somå for eksempel kunne få heile melodien i mp3-format. Kunne du være så snill å sende meg den? Den er sååå FIIN!! :)” Translated: “The first time I heard the radio play Beaty Bow, I specially noticed the music. "I used to listen to your music on the old mp3.com. Recently I was looking through some of my old MP3s, and I came across "China Romantic Land-scape". This reminded me of your "Mysterious China" CD, and I looked around various websites to find this CD to purchase, but I couldn't find it. So, my question is, where can I buy this CD? I just love the music :-)" - Gregory (lis-tener) (2008)

Helge Krabye’s music compositions for radio, television and multimediaAs a reference to Helge Krabye’s musical experience, here is a list of radio, television and multimedia projects that he has composed original music for since he started in 1987. Many of these have also been broadcast in other countries like Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Australia etc.

Music for television documentaries

"Norges Villmarker"This is another Nature Documentary Series by Arne Nævra and Torgeir Beck Lande. Some of the video were used in the longer “Norske Naturperler”, but there is also a lot of new footage. Many of Helges compositions used in “Norske Naturperler” are repeated here. The series was broadcast at NRK1. (2015)

"Brennpunkt - Den Siste Reisen"Helge composed original music for the 50 minutes long television documen-tary which tells the story of Siv Tove Pedersen (41) who chose eutanasi in or-der to end the fight against her serious lung disease. It was broadcast at NRK1. (2015)"Norske Naturperler"Helge spent more than a year composing original music (He also did the sound design in ProTools) for this eight (8) part television documentary series produced by the gifted photographer and journalist Arne Nævra and his col-league Torgeir Beck Lande. We are getting as close as possible on the animals and nature of the most wild nature areas in Norway, and the filming was done with the most modern cameras and HD technology available. It was a joy to work on this project, and the series will be shown in prime time at NRK1 (Na-tional TV) eight Sundays in a row from January 2014. (2014)"Blant Konger og Keisere"Helge has composed new instrumental music for Arne Nævra's one hour tele-vision documentary "Blant Konger og Keisere" where he is filming pinguins in the Antarktis. In addition to new compositions, some of Helge’s exisiting music was used in this fascinating and beautiful documentary broadcast in NRK1. (2011)"Bokprogrammet Spesial: Per Olov Enquist"Helge composed original music for the television feature "Bokprogrammet Spesial" (broadcast on National TV in Norway and Sweden in the summer of 2009) about the great, Swedish author Per Olov Enquist. As Helge was respon-sible for the video editing and graphic design of this television feature, he was able to let the music and images/video support each other in a satisfactory way. (2009)"Antarktis"Helge’s music was used in this three part nature documentary filmed and pro-duced by Arne Nævra for NRK. This documentary series has been filmed in HD

and has some fantastic video shots and great sound. Arne Nævra always record his sound in stereo, which is great for reproducing the sounds of the nature and animals at Antarktis. (2008)"Tvilen"This Brennpunkt television documentary by Norunn Reinertsen is about the Shaken Baby syndrome, a much discussed diagnosis given to small infants who may (or may not) have been shaken too hard by their parents. The music has electronic effects combined with acoustic and electric guitar, Rhodes elec-tric piano and Alembic electric bass. (2006)"Peak Oil - Imposed By Nature" (DVD) Film maker and documentarist Amund Prestegard was nominated for ”Best professional documentary” at The Norwegian Documentary Film Festival 2005. The documentary explains what the global oil decline (life after peak oil) will mean for all of us. Helge’s music is licensed to illustrate the documentary. More info about the DVD at Tropos Dokumentar. (2005)"Brennpunkt: Gruvens Hemmeligheter"Helge composed original music and did the sound design and audio mix for this television documentary by Norunn Reinertsen (NRK). There is a lot of ar-chive footage showing the development of nuclear weapons and sky rockets, and that allowed me to use both electronic and experimental sounds as well as more ambient, musical styles. It is always fun to work with Norunn, since she loves television and is not afraid of using sound fx and music to illustrate her stories. (2005)"Drømmen om Villmarka"A new documentary with beautiful scenes from Norwegian nature by Asgeir Helgestad. I composed a few of the musical themes in this television docu-mentary to illustrate the relationship between man and wild nature. (2005)"Villdyr og Villmark"This is a nine part television documentary series where the gifted nature pho-tographer and producer Arne Nævra is visiting some of the most remote na-tional parks and wild life areas around the world. Helge’s music has strong folkish and traditional music elements. (2003/2004)"Rød og Illegal"Helge composed original music for a television documentary about the com-munist resistance in Norway during the Second World War (produced by Eirik Skaar and Forsvarets Mediasenter). Central in the music is the use of a female voice singing wovels to simple soundscapes of acoustic guitar and electronic effects. The documentary ("Rød og Illegal") was broadcast in the spring of 2003 in National TV in Norway, and later in the other Scandinavian countries. (2003)"Bill. Mrk. Desperat"A Brennpunkt documentary about child keeping and parents who struggle be-cause it is hard to find available places in Kindergardens. Helge’s music is mostly acoustic, with melodic themes and simple effects to support the story and situations. (2003)"I Kø for Å Leve"

Helge composed original music for this Brennpunkt documentary (broadcast in National TV in the beginning of March). He used percussion, electric guitar and some electronic atmospheres to illustrate the struggle of two Norwegian men who are waiting for new kidney transplants because of their diabetes. (2003)"Jobbfeber"Helge composed more than sixty minutes of instrumental music for the televi-sion series "Jobbfeber" ("Job fever") produced by Laterna Magica here in Oslo, Norway. "Metrodoma"Music for the computer game "Metrodoma", financially supported by Norsk Kassettavgifsfond. Helge’s son Lasse did the programming, while the manu-script is by author Arne Svingen and the illustrations by the very talented graphic artist Øystein Sjølie. (1998)

"Worlds Apart" ("Midt i Planeten")A computer game made by Arnfinn Christensen, Helge’s son Lasse and I, and originally developed with support from Apple Norway and PPS (Pedagogisk Programvaresenter). At one point, Helge’s friend Vegard Brenna was also do-ing some of the programming. At least three versions of this game have been distributed in Norway, the latest in 1995 as a part of the release of the Apple Family Mac (Macintosh Centris). (1995)

The programming and design was done by Helge in HyperCard, and he created sounds and musical effects in SoundDesigner and SoundEdit (all in 8 bit reso-lution because they had only 1 Mbytes RAM in the Macintoshes in those days). The game was used on a big exhibition in Bergen called "Levende Jord" ("Liv-ing Earth”) - and also at Tysenfryd near Oslo - and the game was played by more than two thousand visiting children during the summer. “Play At Your Own Risk" has thee very different tracks inspired by nujazz, blues and electronica. The first composition "New Moon" is half acoustic (pi-ano, acoustic guitar) and half electronic (MiniMoog), and the arrangement is strong with a memorable theme. The second composition is a blues tune, to-tally improvised and arranged with pure and raw drums and Fender Strat electric guitar. The lead guitar plays around a MiniMoog synth solo with the

sound through a guitar amp to make the sound special. The electric piano makes a sweet contrast to the raw sound. The last track is downtempo electronica with various fast and hard beats, sound effects and bits of guitars, voices, synths and noises.
