Garrett Boone never considered a career in retailing. Instead, he grew up aspiring to become an architect, later opting for a bachelor's degree in European history from Rice University and a master's degree in history from the University of Texas at Austin.

By 1976, Boone, was determined to start his own busi-ness. Leaving his job, Boone and two friends, Dallas archi-tect John Mullen, and Kip Tindell (Chairman and CEO) discussed the idea of opening a handmade furniture store. After two years, they scrapped this idea for an original retail concept: a store devoted entirely to storage and organiza-tion products for the home: The Container Store opened its first location in North Dallas July 1, 1978.

His commitment to maintaining the company's unique culture has played a vital role in The Container Store being selected by Fortune magazine as a “Best Company to

Work For” twelve years in a row. In 2006, along with Kip and Sharon Tindell (Chief Merchandising Officer), Boone was inducted into the Retailing Hall of Fame.

In 2007 Boone was First runner-up for Texan of the Year awarded by The Dallas Morning News.

Boone sits on the Boards of the YMCA of the USA and the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas. He is on the Board of Directors for The Woodall Rogers Park Foundation, Trinity Trust Foundation, The Boone Family Foundation, and TreeHouse, Inc. He is highly involved in the Trinity Pad-dling Trails and Bird Count Initiatives and is a member of the advisory board for The Dallas Women's Foundation and Teach for America. He is an advocate for public education and serves on the Dallas ISD Star Commission to share business best practices with DISD.

ROTARY INTERNATIONALRotaryʼs strategic partnerships

Rotary International has announced that RI and ShelterBox have signed a project partner agreement that will allow the two organizations to collaborate more closely to provide relief and temporary shelter to survivors of disasters.

This is one of many partnerships, world-wide , that Rotary has formed. In the Global Polio Eradication Initiative Rotary is partnering with the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Dis-ease Control and Prevention and UNICEF as well as the Gates Foundation and local governments.

Under the Future Vision Plan RI is

partnering with Aga Khan University, Mercy Ships, Oikovredit International,and UNESCO-IHE.

To support their humanitarian ef-forts, RI is partnering with Dolly Partonʼs Imagination Library, Goodwill Industries International, and the International Reading Association. They also partner with local governments.

RI partners with universities around the world to offer fellow-ships in conflict prevention and resolution.

guests. Bill Kelly introduced a guest who was originally from Iran, but who has recently gained his citizenship. Mark Kashar intro-

duced The Hub and the web adver-tisers of the week. Mike Jarrell recognized Philip Ray as the most recent Frank Monroe Fellow. He also

reported that they are just $1500 away from breaking a record for the amount of donations in a year. Mike will have a list at future

meetings so that members may see how close they are to becoming a Frank Monroe Fellow. Mark Cameroon introduced our newest two members, Jack Gillis and Brian Coggon.

PE Fred Brown introduced our speaker today, Elizabeth Liser, Director of Philanthropy at the North Texas Food Bank. She started

about three hundred dif-ferent agencies, ranging from very small ones to large ones like the Sal-vation Army, who gets about ninety percent of their food from the food bank. The Food Bank

started in 1982, and made about four hun-dred thousand pounds of food available. Last year they provided about fifty million pounds of food. They put about ninety thou-sand nutritious means into the community every day. They cover a nineteen county area. The need is estimated at about two hundred and eighty thousand meals per day and that about one in seven people are hun-gry. One of their new programs is the Back-pack Program. Every Friday kids get a back-pack full of food to eat over the weekend; it is nutritious food that children can deal with themselves. They also have a community kitchen that prepares about ten thousand meals a week. The food is prepared by a group of women from a state jail in a Second Chance Program. One graduate of the pro-gram is now an employee of the Food Bank. They also have teams that teach families how to shop for and prepare the most nutri-tious foods on a very small budget. The Food Bank has just acquired another facility, and has increased their commitment to pro-viding more fresh produce. While expanding, they are also trying to become more efficient and are partnering with universities and hos-pitals to make use of the latest research on hunger and poverty. She feels that they are moving beyond the model they have had before. She said that they purchase about twelve percent of the food that goes out to assure a supply of perishable foods. She concluded by saying that 94 cents of every dollar contributed goes to the program.

Meeting with the Warsaw Rotary Club on 9/8/2011 by Gerry Montgomery

As most veteran RCPC members know, Gerry Montgomery is a world traveler – and he recommends visiting Rotary wherever you travel. He describes one of his visits, “In Warsaw the club had about 20 attendees and met at a Hotel for an evening dinner meeting. There was one fee paid to the club secretary. The subject of the meeting was the experiences of three exchange students spon-sored by their club. One had gone to Florida, one to the Philippines and one to Germany.  Another stu-dent (who had been an exchange student to Mexico in 2010) translated their presentations for me.”

Rotary Is international. It is fun and enlightening to visit Rotary Clubs when you travel. Don't be afraid to go to a club that does not speak English; they'll be glad to see you! Be sure to take a banner with you to exchange with the Club you visit!
