You are welcome here Welcome. We are glad you are here! If you are a newcomer to the Chapel, we are ready for the change and challenge that you bring with you as you become active in this community. We are excited that we will become a different and more diverse community because of who you are and the gifts you bring. Welcome!

Here are some suggestions to help you orient to our current practices. Stand, sit, and kneel as you are able. We have communion and all are welcome. The bread is gluten free. The wine is alcohol free. Bold text is read by the congregation. Sometimes everything you need for worship is up on the screens. Bike racks across the street from the Chapel are more secure than leaving your bike downstairs. Accessible bathrooms are located downstairs (please escort children). Parking behind the Chapel is reserved for anyone with mobility challenges. Street parking and paid University public parking is available.

“Never been to a Lutheran service” might have helpful tips to understand our pattern of liturgy. Use this QR code to get to the document.

The service is divided into four major parts, which enact the drama of faith:

• Gathering—The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God.

• Story/Word—God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song.

• Meal/Eucharist—God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ.

• Sending—God blesses us and sends us in mission to the world.

Prayer ministers People are available to pray with you by the baptismal font at any time during the service but especially during communion. You may pray for yourself, another person, or the world. Please make your way to the baptismal font and a prayer minister will join you there. Anointing with oil and baptismal water is also available from the prayer ministers.

Gathering

Though the word trinity is not found in the scriptures, today’s second reading includes the apostolic greeting that begins the liturgy: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. In the gospel Jesus sends his disciples forth to baptize in the name of the Creator, and the Child, and the Holy Spirit. More than a doctrine, the Trinity expresses the heart of our faith: we have experienced the God of creation made known in Jesus Christ and with us always through the Holy Spirit. We celebrate the mystery of the Holy Trinity in word and sacrament, as we profess the creed, and as we are sent into the world to bear witness to our faith.

Apostolic Greeting

Alleluia! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed. Alleluia!

The grace of our risen Savior Jesus Christ, the love of God,

and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

Hymn of Praise: “Glory to God”ii

Prayer of the Dayiii

May God be with you.

And also with you.

Let us pray.

God of heaven and earth, before the foundation of the universe and the beginning of time you are the triune God: Author of creation, eternal Word of salvation, life-giving Spirit of wisdom. Guide us to all truth by your Spirit, that we may proclaim all that Christ has revealed and rejoice in the glory he shares with us. Glory and praise to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

Word Genesis 1:1--2:4a This first creation story reached its current form during the crisis of the Babylonian exile of the people of Israel. God, not their captors’ god Marduk, was responsible for their existence. God created women and men as rulers over creation, to preserve and protect it. God also rested on the seventh day, hallowing that day forever as the Sabbath.

After Scripture is read, we respond:

Word of God. Word of Resurrection!

Thanks be to God.

Psalm 8: “How Glorious Is Your Name”iv

2 Corinthians 13:11-13 Paul closes a challenging letter to the Corinthians with an appeal to Christian fellowship grounded in the triune harmony of Christ’s grace, God’s love, the Spirit’s partnership.

After Scripture is read, we respond:

Word of God. Word of Resurrection!

Thanks be to God.

1. When I see the heavens, the work of your hands, the moon and the stars which you arranged, What are we that you keep us in mind? Your children that you remember them at all?

2. Yet you have made us little less than gods, with glory and honor you crowned us, Gave us pow’r over the work of your hands, dominion over all that you have made.

3. All sheep and oxen, birds of the air, all things that swim in the sea. Beasts without number, life without names, you have placed under our feet.

Affirmation of Faith (New Style from the 2017 Confirmation class)

I trust in God

who is all powerful and made everything in the world –

and thinks it’s pretty good.

I trust my peep Jesus, who is very tight with God - they’re like this.

Jesus comes from God’s Spirit, but is also one of us –

born in a barn to a poor peasant girl named Mary.

Because he wanted to change things and make them fair,

those in power got rid of him by killing him in a way

that sent a message to everybody else not to mess with the system.

The Romans killed him, but he didn’t stay dead.

He came back to life and went up to heaven.

He’s planning to come back to earth and set things straight.

I trust in God’s Spirit, and believe that it’s better

to do worship and do justice in community.

We’re not alone in this faith thing –

friends, family, and even those who have died are with us.

Knowing God loves and forgives us, we do the same to others.

Just like Jesus we are coming back even after death - but not like zombies.

Instead, we’ll be full of life and never die again.

Amen (which means yeah!)

Prayers of the People The response to each petition is “God, in your mercy, hear our prayer.”

Called together in the Spirit’s embrace, let us pray for the mending of God’s world.

A brief silence. Holy Mystery, you call us to be your church. Keep calling your people to faithful reform. Give us vision and courage to share your new life with all the world. God, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Joyful Creator, you made a wondrous universe and call us to be partners in its care. Inspire delight in the furry, scaly, watery, breezy, sandy stuff you love. Inspire us to bring about creation’s healing. God, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Merciful God, you love our enemies and bless all people. Make our hearts yearn to be joyful and share your generosity. Help leaders and citizens use political power in service of your peace. God, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Compassionate One, you bring about the fullness of life. When sorrow wounds faith, send wise ones to comfort and encourage those who suffer. Heal your people in body, mind, and spirit (especially). God, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Holy Trinity, you call us together to bless your world. Guide all who are preparing for baptism into the joy of new life in your name. God, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Here other intercessions may be offered. Holy God, you bring life out of death at every turn. We give you thanks for all the saints (especially the apostle Barnabas) and for dear ones whom we mourn (especially). God, in your mercy, hear our prayer. All these things, and whatever else you see that we need, we entrust to your care through Christ our Redeemer. Amen. Sharing the Peace The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you.

Jesus Christ, host of this meal, you have given us not only this bread and cup, but your very self, that we may feast on your great love. We Remember1 Author Frederick Buechner has said: 'In the holy flirtation with the world, God occasionally drops a handkerchief. These handkerchiefs are called saints.' We remember those who have died as well as those who have made a difference in our lives and in the life of the world.

Jun-09 Columba, died 597; Aidan, died 651; Bede, died 735; renewers of the church These three monks from the British Isles were pillars among those who kept alive the light of learning and devotion during the Middle Ages. Columba founded three monasteries, including one on the island of Iona, off the coast of Scotland. That monastery was left in ruins after the Reformation but today is home to an ecumenical religious community. Aidan, who helped bring Christianity to the Northumbria area of England, was known for his pastoral style and ability to stir people to charity and good works. Bede was a Bible translator and scripture scholar. He wrote a history of the English church and was the first historian to date events anno Domini (A.D.), "year of our Lord." Bede is also known for his hymns, including "A Hymn of Glory Let Us Sing!" (ELW 393). Jun-11 Barnabas, Apostle The Eastern church commemorates Barnabas as one of the Seventy commissioned by Jesus. Though he was not among the Twelve mentioned in the gospels, the book of Acts gives him the title of apostle. His name means "son of encouragement." When Paul came to Jerusalem after his conversion, Barnabas took him in over the fears of the other apostles, who doubted Paul's discipleship. Later, Paul and Barnabas traveled together on missions. At the Council of Jerusalem, Barnabas defended the claims of Gentile Christians in relation to the Mosaic law. 1 These citations are from our list of events and members and friends who have died; a list of commemorations found in the ELW; and the resource 'Common Prayer: A Liturgy for Ordinary Radicals,' copyright 2010 by The Simple Way and School for Conversion, Zondervan.

Jun-14 Basil the Great, Bishop of Caesarea, died 379; Gregory, Bishop of Nyssa, died around 385; Gregory of Nazianzus, Bishop of Constantinople, died around 389; Macrina, theologian, died around 379 The three men in this group are known as the Cappadocian fathers; all three explored the mystery of the Holy Trinity. Basil was influenced by his sister Macrina to live a monastic life, and he settled near the family estate in Caesarea. Basil's Longer Rule and Shorter Rule for monastic life are the basis for Eastern monasticism to this day, and express a preference for communal monastic life over that of hermits. Gregory of Nazianzus (nah-zee-AN-zus) was sent to preach on behalf of the Orthodox faith against the Arians in Constantinople, though the Orthodox did not have a church there at the time. He defended Orthodox trinitarian and Christological doctrine, and his preaching won over the city. Gregory of Nyssa (NISS-uh) was the younger brother of Basil the Great. He is remembered as a writer on spiritual life and the contemplation of God in worship and sacraments. Macrina (muh-CREE-nuh) was the older sister of Basil and Gregory of Nyssa. She received an excellent education centered on the Bible, and when her fiancé died she devoted herself to the pursuit of Christian perfection. She was a leader of a community, based at the family estate, dedicated to asceticism, meditation, and prayer. Macrina's teaching was influential within the early church.

Notes i Robin Leach (born 1953) published this new hymn text in 2002. He based the text on perichoresis, a Greek word meaning “to dance around.” Theologians in the eighth century used perichoresis to convey the idea that the unity of the Trinity resided in the mutual interdependence of the three persons. This hymn is an invitation to join that dance. The tune, “Kingsfold,” is a traditional English melody arranged by English organist Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958). It is named for the village in Surrey, England, where Vaughan Williams first heard it. The son of the vicar of Christ Church in Down Ampney, Vaughan Williams eventually became professor of composition at the Royal College of Music. He is considered one of the greatest composers of English church music. He spent a number of years collecting English folk songs, which influenced his compositions and served as a rich source of new tunes for music collections that he edited: The English Hymnal (1906), Songs of Praise (1925), and the Oxford Book of Carols (1928). ii Our service music for the Easter season comes from the Mass of Spirit and Grace by Ricky Manalo. Born in New York and raised in New Jersey, Manalo studied composition and piano at the Manhattan School of Music and theology at the Washington Theological Union. He was ordained a Paulist priest in 2000. He completed his Ph.D. in Asian-American liturgical studies in 2013 at the Graduate Theological Union (Berkeley, California). He currently teaches at Santa Clara University and the Jesuit School of Theology (Berkeley, CA). His music can be found in Catholic and Protestant hymnals. He has written numerous articles and books on pastoral ministry, liturgical music, and intercultural communication, including collaboration on a collection of liturgical songs from composers in the Philippines. He is also the director of the Cultural Orientation Program for International Ministers/Priests (COPIM) of Loyola Marymount University. When he is not traveling, he resides at Old St. Mary’s Cathedral in Chinatown, San Francisco. iii This alternate option for the prayer of the day is based on a prayer for the second Sunday of Easter in the 1985 Roman Catholic Sacramentary.

iv Rory Cooney (born 1952) wrote both text and tune of this contemporary setting of Psalm 8. He has been the director of liturgy and music ministries at St. Anne Catholic Community in Barrington, Illinois, since 1994. His published compositions span a career of songwriting that began more than 30 years ago, and continues to the present. His recording career began in 1984, and virtually all of his recordings have been collaborations with his wife, Theresa Donohoo, and Gary Daigle. He is perhaps best known for “Canticle of the Turning,” his lively paraphrase of the Magnificat set to the traditional Irish tune “Star of the County Down.” v This beautiful new setting of the Exultet (Easter Proclamation) by Ricky Manalo, CSP was commissioned by University Lutheran Chapel of Berkeley in celebration of Andy Bouman on his 20th anniversary as Director of Music. It was first sung at our Easter Vigil service in 2016. vi Brian Wren (born 1936) wrote this hymn text in 1983. It was first published in English Praise: A Supplement to the English Hymnal (1975) and later revised for The Presbyterian Hymnal (1990). Born in Essex, England, Wren studied modern languages (B.A., 1960), theology (B.A., 1962), and theology of the Old Testament (D.Phil., 1968) at Oxford University. He was ordained in 1965 in what is now the United Reformed Church (UK), and initially served as minister of Hockley and Hawkwell Congregational Church in Essex. He then served as a consultant for adult education and on various campaigns to end global poverty and inequality, as well as a free-lance minister and hymn writer. In 2000 he became professor of worship at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia, a seminary of the Presbyterian Church (USA). He began writing hymns in the late 1960s, “because old words sometimes fell short of new experience.” He also is an advocate of adopting inclusive language in worship. Since his retirement in 2007, he continues to write hymns and supports the ministry of his wife, the Rev. Susan Heafield, who is currently pastor of Sidney United Methodist Church in upstate New York. Roman Catholic composer Gary Daigle (born 1957) composed the tune in 1994. Daigle studied music at Southeastern Louisiana University and liturgical studies at the Corpus Christi Center for Liturgical Studies in Arizona. He served as Director of Music Ministry at the Franciscan Renewal Center (The Casa, Scottsdale, Arizona), as well as other churches in Arizona, California, and Illinois. He is presently the associate director of music at St. Anne Catholic Church in Barrington, Illinois. He has collaborated with other composers such as The Dameans, Rory Cooney, Marty Haugen, and Ed Foley. vii Per Harling (born 1948), a Lutheran pastor in the Church of Sweden, wrote this energetic hymn of praise in the mid-1980s as the Sanctus for a youth mass that continues to be very popular in Sweden. It has since spread all over the world and has been translated into many languages. The hymn can be sung as a canon. Harling is the biographer of Swedish hymnwriter Lina Sandell (author of “Children of the Heavenly Father”). In 2007 Harling moved from Uppsala to Lausanne, where he is the pastor for many Swedes living in Switzerland. He coordinated the worship committee for the Lutheran World Federation Assembly in Stuttgart in 2010. viii Elena G. Maquiso (1914-2005), a professor at Silliman University in Dumaguete, the Phillipines, wrote this Cebuano hymn text in 1961. Born in the Phillipines, Maquiso later received her doctorate from the Hartford (Connecticut) Theological Foundation. She was known for her research on indigeneous hymnody of the Philippines. Maquiso also composed the tune, “Halad,” which she adapted from an old Honggo folk melody from the southern Philippines. The hymn has appeared in a number of international hymnals, beginning with the E.A.C.C. Hymnal (East Asia Christian Conference, 1964), where her text was translated into English by Indian Methodist pastor D.T. (Daniel Thambyrajah) Niles (1908-1970). Born in Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Niles studied theology at the University of London and later served as president of the Ceylon Methodist Conference and the East Asia Christian Conference. ix John MacLeod Campbell Crum (1872-1958), an Anglican priest who was canon of Canterbury for fifteen years, wrote this Easter text for the 15th-century French Christmas carol, “Noel Nouvelet,” for inclusion in the Oxford Book of Carols (1928). French organist Marcel Dupré (1886-1971) used the melody as the basis for his famous “Variations on a Noel.” x The Iona Community works and worships in a 10th-century abbey on the remote island of Iona, Scotland. The community conducts retreats throughout the year for people seeking a deeper religious experience. Their output of hymns includes this one, written by John L. Bell (born 1949) and Graham Maule (born 1957) for the 1985 gathering of the World Student Christian Federation in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was first sung at the opening worship at Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh. The conference celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Edinburgh Mission Conference, birthplace of the contemporary ecumenical movement. Bell

is a Presbyterian minister in the Church of Scotland and a leader in the Iona Community. A graduate of the University of Glasgow, Bell’s ministry has focused on youth work and liturgy. Maule studied architecture at Glasgow University, followed by several years in youth work, before moving into worship renewal and adult education with the Iona Community’s Wild Goose Resource Group. (“The Wild Goose” is an ancient Celtic name for the Holy Spirit.) The tune, “Lauda anima,” is the work of English composer John Goss (1800-1880). Goss composed the tune for Henry F. Lyte’s hymn, “Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven”). It became one of the most popular tunes in Great Britain during the Victorian era and is frequently sung at weddings to this day. The son of an organist, Goss served as the organist at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London from 1838 to 1872 and as professor of harmony at the Royal Academy of Music for 47 years. He composed both secular and sacred music, including some early glees and a madrigal, 6 services, and 45 anthems. It was said that he never began a composition without first asking for God’s blessing upon his work. Goss was knighted in 1872.
