The Collect of the Day

Almighty and everliving God, we humbly pray that, as your only-begotten Son was this day presented in the temple, so we may be presented to you with pure and clean hearts by Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Reading Malachi 3:1- 4CommentaryMalachi ministered to Israelites who had returned to their homeland from Babylonian captivity. Life was not easy for the returnees; the spiritual, ethical and moral tone of the nation was low. Through Malachi, God spoke of the messen-ger who would prepare His way. There is no mystery regarding the identity of this messenger, Jesus identified him as John the Baptist (see Matthew 11:10 and Luke 7:27). The people longed to see God in their midst, but the Lord warned that day would be overwhelming, because the purity and holiness of God would fully expose the sinfulness of the people. However, the Lord promised to produce fundamental and thorough cleansing and change, resulting in acceptable offerings and worship from all Israel.

Thus says the Lord, See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight-- indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the Lord in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years. The word of the Lord.People: Thanks be to God.

The Holy Gospel All stand. Luke 2:22—40

Celebrant: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, the parents of Jesus brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord”), and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtle-doves or two young pigeons.” Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, “Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.” And the child’s father and moth-er were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, “This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed-- and a sword will pierce your own soul too.” There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.

Celebrant: The Gospel of the Lord.People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Sermon The Rev. Cheryl Brainard

The Nicene Creed 358

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

3

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

ROOTED IN JESUSWe are not alone *insert theme from X-files here*. We are part of something much bigger. During seasons of life of the church, it can feel isolating to varying degrees. We can feel like we are on an island personally and as a church. Recently, a diverse gathering of over 1300 Episcopalians came to Atlanta for Rooted in Jesus. People discovered they were not alone. They had sisters and brothers from all over the church come together to learn, share, and worship.

Large and small Episcopal-based organizations came together to make Rooted in Jesus a reality. Next week the Diocese of East Carolina will bring all of our churches under one roof for Diocesean Convention, and St. James will host the convention Eucharist. We will learn, share, and worship just as Episcopalians from all over the church at Rooted in Jesus. We are not alone and we are on this journey together. A recent topic for the Faith Discussions Class, after The World’s Greatest Coffee Hour, centered around being authentic with each other within our Christ-centered community.

During our repetitive weekly rat race, we often feel we have to put on our public masks. We mindlessly respond to the question, “How are you?” with a simple and precise:

“Fine” or “Great.” We form a familiar smile hiding what is beneath the surface. The church must be a place where we can be vulnerable with one another. Our masks must come off, and we must understand each other on a deeper level.

I challenge you to really check in with your church community. Let the World’s Greatest Coffee Hour be the planted seeds for The World’s Greatest Authentic

Conversations. Fight the urge to simplify everything going on in your life; instead, be real and share how you are really doing in your life. Celebrate your joys and achievements, as well as your struggles and worries. After a long week of marathon running, church should be a deep breath and spiritual renewal in your week. A moment to let down your guard, give it to God, and relax with a community that supports you for who you are, where you are, in this particular moment.

Have you ever wondered why calendars start the week on Sunday, not Monday? Perhaps it is a reminder for us to center our week around filling our own spiritual cup, as we are all rooted in Jesus.

ADULT FAITH FORMATION CLASSES TODAY Join us for a time of fellowship and growth starting at 10:15 a.m.

DISCIPLES CLASS- The Lippitt RoomThe Fantastic Life and Teachings of Fr. Thomas Merton- Led by Ron Copley

Our reading is The Seven Storey Mountain, A modern-day Confessions of Saint Augustine. The Seven Storey Mountain is one of the most influential religious works of the twentieth century. This edition contains an introduction by Merton’s editor, Robert Giroux, and a note to the reader by biographer William H. Shannon. It tells of the growing restlessness of a brilliant and passionate young man whose search for peace and faith leads him, at the age of twenty-six, to take vows in one of the most demanding Catholic orders--the Trappist monks. At the Abbey of Gethsemani, “the four walls of my new freedom,” Thomas Merton struggles to withdraw from the world, but only after he has fully immersed himself in it. The Seven Storey Mountain has been a favorite of readers ranging from Graham Greene to Claire Booth Luce, Eldridge Cleaver, and Frank McCourt. Since its original publication, this timeless spiritual tome has been published in over twenty languages and has touched millions of lives.

FAITH DISCUSSIONS- The Green RoomMeet Our Interim Rector - Led by The Rev. Pierce Klemmt

Come and meet the Rev. Pierce Klemmt and learn about what it means to be an interim rector and how this is an important role for the church.

GOSPEL du JOUR- The Bishop Wright RoomFebruary 2, 2020: Luke 2:22-40We welcome all who wish to spend some time reflecting on the gospel heard in church on Sunday. We’ll use a variety of resources to reflect on the passage, taken from the Gospel of Matthew. Each week will include an opportunity to think about the “so-what” factor: how does this passage intersect with my life?

AN OUTRAGEOUS MESSAGEby The Rev. Pierce W. Klemmt

You are about to read an outrageous message. If you sent it to the Bishop, I could be canned faster than you can say “excommunicate.” But it is the message you have been expecting since both our wardens have appealed to your best giving practices. Many of your peers have already pledged their “Life and labor to the Lord.” However, we do not want to plan ministry at St. James without everyone’s support. Ingather is a community-wide affair. We belong to each other in prayer, support, outreach, learning and rejoicing. A pledge of financial support is the engine that makes it all happen and when we all give, it is the unmistakeable sign that we belong together for the sake of Jesus Christ.

What amuses me is, some people actually think that receiving a message from the Interim Pastor, will stir those who are on the fence, as well as those who wouldn’t know a pledge card from a magazine subscription. (Let’s face it, this Interim is no Jay Sidebotham or Henry Parsley) But write I must, and write something so compelling, it will change your mind. So permit me to take a stab at it.

I’m not going to charm you with all the wonderful things we do at St. James. I know I’m talking to hardliners. But it may interest you to know that it takes $4, 091 per day to run this place. Multiply that by 365 and you have a whopping amount of cash.

It’s not that without you, we will not meet our budget and start slashing programs and personnel. But I do mean it when I say, the church does not want to roll out its plans for ministry in 2020 without you. Like a missing person, for whatever reason, around your dinner table at Thanksgiving, our mission wouldn’t be the same without your participation.

If that doesn’t bring you to tears, think on this from the one who surpasses even my brazenness. Jesus says it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a person of means to enter the Kingdom of God. Maybe the reason is not that the well-heeled are so wicked they are forbidden from the place. It may be that they are so busy protecting what they have, that they can’t see it as a place worth getting into.

Sometimes the hard truth is better than the soft sell. But this I know: to take a risk in joining a parish community of trust and purpose with a pledge, will at least get one leg through the eye of the needle. The rest is up to you.

A pledge card is available in the entrance of the church

LECTURE SERIES: “SECULOSITY” WITH DAVID ZAHLTuesday, February 4 | 7:00 p.m. | Great Hall | Reception preceding at 6:30 p.m.

Seculosity: How Career, Parenting, Technology, Food, Politics, and Romance Became Our New Religion and What To Do About It. Please join us on February 4, at 7:00 in the Great Hall for an evening with David Zahl as he presents his new book, Seculosity: How Career, Parenting, Technology, Food, Politics, and Romance Became Our New Religion and What To Do About It. According to Zahl, Americans may be going to church less, but we’re more religious than ever. At the heart of our current moment lies a universal yearning, writes Zahl, not to be happy or respected so much as enough— what religions call “righteous.” To fill the void left by religion, we look to all sorts of everyday activities—from eating and parenting to dating and voting—for the identity, purpose, and meaning once provided on Sunday morning. Seculosity takes a thoughtful yet entertaining tour of American “performancism.”

Ultimately, Zahl brings us to a fresh appreciation for the grace of God in all its countercultural wonder. David Zahl is the founder and director of Mockingbird Ministries, editor-in-chief of the popular Mockingbird website (www.mbird.com), and co-host of The Mockingcast. He and his family live in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he also serves on the staff of Christ Episcopal Church. Zahl is the author of A Mess of Help: From the Crucified Soul of Rock N’ Roll and coauthor of Law and Gospel: A Theology for Sinners (and Saints). His most recent book, Seculosity: How Career, Parenting, Technology, Food, Politics, and Romance Became Our New Religion and What To Do About It, appeared in 2019 from Fortress Press. This book will be available for purchase at the lecture.

SPIRITUAL GROWTH MOMENTBy Hannah Brownlow

One beautiful April morning, I participated in a 5K that was organized by a very special couple in memory of their sweet baby girl, Sally. Sally was born the previous year and had a condition that would not allow her to survive outside the womb. Money raised from the event would be donated to Welcome Home Angel, a local nonprofit organization that benefits children living with chronic and debilitating medical conditions. Welcome Home Angel provides a makeover of the child’s bedroom creating a safe, healthy and cheerful environment in which to live and recover. I had the privilege of meeting Sally’s parents, Sarah Beth and Lewis, through my job as a bereavement counselor. We met many months before Sally’s birth to plan the delivery. Sarah Beth’s ever growing faith during this time of adversity inspired me, her friends, family and parish at First Presbyterian Church. While I was supposed to be helping her, she gave me way more in return. Many others echoed this sentiment. On the day of the 5K, multigenerational families gathered to remember sweet Sally and show their love a support for this precious family. Sarah Beth read from Song of Solomon prior to the race and then off we went. As I ran amongst young dads pushing strollers, moms chasing toddlers, and grandparents holding newborn babies, the outpouring of love and support felt tangible. While Sally’s life was short her legacy will be endless.

For behold, the winter is past; the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land. Song of Solomon 2: 11-12

ST. JAMES CHILDREN’S CHOIR IS BACKWe are excited to announce that we are bringing the Children’s Choir back this Winter/Spring for children 4-8 years old! We already have ~15 children that have expressed interest in participating; we feel the more the merrier!!!

Our goals are simple:1) Engage our 4-8 year olds in music and fun at St. James. 2) Limit the frequency of practice and while creating opportunity for monthly performances at Church.3) Align practice 1x/month with the Bread Breakers dinner, to make attendance easier for parents and fun fellowship for kids. For more information please reach out to Happy Clark at [email protected] or John Sullivan at [email protected].

CHILDREN’S OFFERING We are fostering a spirit of giving by inviting children to bring canned food weekly to St James at the 9:00 a.m. service. There will be a special time during worship when they will be asked to bring their offerings to the front and place them in the donation basket for Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard.

ST. JAMES CHILDREN’S BUSY BAGSChildren are an important part of our church family! We’re excited to share a new ministry centered around the youngest members of our parish. Meet the “Busy Bag.” The Busy Bags are designed to help keep children engaged with age-appropriate and quiet activities during the service. Our hope for the Busy Bags is that they would allow parents time to really enjoy and take in the sermon. and help the children create positive associations with time spent in the sanctuary. The Busy Bags are meant to be shared with all children who visit our parish to be used during the service. We ask that all “Busy Bags” be returned to their designated spot in the transept at the conclusion of each service as a way to teach our children about passing blessings on to others.

As the items in the Busy Bags are used, we invite our church family to participate in this ministry by donating goodies to the Busy Bags. If you have any questions about this ministry, please reach out to Shannon Lockamy at [email protected].

YOUTH CONFIRMATIONAt Baptism, we are “Marked as Christ’s Own Forever.” Parents, Godparents, Families, Friends, and Parishioners commit to helping one grow spiritually and deepen one’s faith. So, what is Confirmation? Confirmation is the rite at which a baptized person affirms Christian belief and is admitted as a full member of The Church. Confirmation means accepting responsibility for your faith and for your spiritual growth. Confirmation is a sacramental rite in which the candidates “express a mature commitment to Christ, and to receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop.” (Book of Common Prayer, p. 860). If you have questions or if you are interested in taking this amazing journey of faith, please contact Shannon Lockamy, St. James Christian Formation Coordinator, [email protected] , or Cookie Cantwell, St. James Youth Ministries Coordinator [email protected] More information will be shared next week about the commitments and our St. James Youth Confirmation schedule.
