Greetings Hillmen, Here we are heading in to the last month of the school year and we are busier than ever. Thank you to all the juniors who participated in the second year of SBAC testing. I want to extend my appreciation for your patience and dedication to Placer High School. As many know, we spent several days working out of the lower gym for this testing session, and with the help of students, school and district staff, we were able to complete the testing. We had a bit of a hiccup when our Internet service went down on Tuesday. AP Testing begins May 2 and run through May 10. For those students testing, please see the counseling office regarding testing location and times. Undergraduate awards will take place on May 18 in the Earl Crabbe Gym during school in an awards assembly. Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors will be recognized for their achievement by department, in athletics, and for academic performance (GPA). Seniors will be meeting in the auditorium for Senior Awards presentations during the same time. Invitations will be going out to families of students who are to be recognized. Scholarship Awards Night is being held Wednesday, May 18, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Auditorium. Mr. Lawrenson and the Band/Choir program at Placer High School continue to amaze us all with a brilliant performance at the competition in Seattle this year. The Jazz Band was awarded Outstanding Band, Concert Choir and Chamber choir received Gold and First place, and Maestro Awards were given out to Andre Sacalxot, Taylor Hart, and Ayden Danovaro for those students who exemplified outstanding musicianship as deemed by the judges. They also received an Instrumental Sweepstakes award and Adjudicator Awards (based on high score). April 22 marked the end of the third grading period for the Spring term. Current grades can be checked on the parent portal. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s teacher and/or counselor. As we head into the home stretch, please remind your child to keep up with their studies because before you know it, Finals will be here May 25 and May 26. As another reminder, tutoring is still offered after school in the library on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Placer Spring sports have been enjoying a successful season as many of our teams continue to work hard for a league championship. To start, I would like to mention that our very own Brig Tucker was chosen as the PVL recipient for the prestigious Dale Lackey award. Most teams are finishing up league play and a few have even begun playoffs. Girls and boys swimming continue to excel in the pool and look towards a great showing at PVL Trials. The boys swim team beat Bear River for the first time in over five years to remain undefeated in league. Girls soccer is looking to secure another league title but they will have to overcome Colfax to do so. Boys golf will need a win over Lincoln to secure a league title and Coed Tennis finished up top the leader board with first place finishes, and many of their players continuing to post season play. This year marks the moment where Tennis has won over 100 straight league matches since we have been in the PVL. Track and Field is looking to capture yet again a PVL crown and will face Center High School for the league title and sending individual performers to the Section meet. The baseball team continues to play great baseball, but still has a battle on their hands for second place and a playoff spot. Softball has enjoyed another great season and is a strong favorite to capture one of the three playoff spots this year. The boys volleyball team has played some great matches in league this year and are looking to finish undefeated heading into playoffs. I would like to take a moment to also recognize a few outstanding teachers on the Placer campus. English teacher Erin Lee is being recognized by Auburn Rotary as teacher of the year. Mrs. Lee, along with Rotary student of the year Gavin Weiler, will be recognized at a lunch by the Rotarians May 24 for their outstanding work at Placer High. Also, EL teacher Christy Dyer, special education teacher Lisa Roeder-Sussman, and math teacher Rick Foley are being recognized as “Teachers Who Make a Difference,” sponsored by ACSA (Association of California School Administrators) for their exemplary work at Placer High. Lastly, please note the calendar for May as we head into the home stretch. Please remember, we are on a new calendar this year and school ends May 26. Graduation will take place Saturday, May 28 in LeFebvre Stadium. All students looking to play sports next year can come for their physical on May 23 in the Library at 6:30 pm. This is a free service and is good for all sports next year. Please contact athletic director Mark Lee for further information. Sincerely, Peter Efstathiu, Placer High Principal Go Hillmen! We close the year with many successes but most important was the parent involvement and the increase of new parents that stepped up to be a part of the parent organization. We look forward to next year and achieving our fundraising goals to increase membership and monies to support the teacher wish lists, sports, art, welding and much more.

I would like to thank everyone that attended our annual fundraiser the "Green and Gold Food & Wine Festival". It was a great success that helped raise over $13,000 for the wish lists for next year.

We are also looking for some new faces for next year to fill key committee positions opening up. It would be great to have people in place before the next school year. You can email us at [email protected] or call me at 916-952-1019. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you again to all the parents who supported Friends of Placer High School this year and

we look forward to seeing you next year.

Thank you,

President

Congratulations Class of 2016! As this is the last newsletter of the school year, the counseling staff would like to congratulate the class of 2016 and wish them the best as they embark on the next stage of their lives. Graduation Practice is on Friday, May 27 at 8am starting in gym. Graduation will be held on Saturday, May 28 beginning at 9:00a.m. in the stadium. Graduates must report to the E.C. Gym no later than 8:00a.m. There are no tickets to Commencement, just first come first serve. Senior Survey: All Seniors are required to fill out the 2016 Senior Survey online. It can be found on the Placer High homepage and on the PHS counseling page. It only takes a few minutes and students will not be cleared for graduation until it is filled out and submitted. Final Transcripts: On the Senior Check Out Form (handed out on Tuesday, May 24th ) there is a spot where students can indicate where a Final Transcript should be sent. All seniors who are going on to a 4-year college in the fall must have their final transcript sent to the college. We do not automatically send a final transcript unless you indicate it on the Senior Check Out Form. Failure to do so could jeopardize your acceptance and/or prevent registration for fall classes. Summer School: Placer School for Adults is offering a three week credit recovery program for incoming juniors, incoming seniors and non-graduating 2016 seniors. Students can earn up to 10 credits. The courses available are English, Government, Economics, Math Review, Algebra, U.S. History, World History, Health, Tech Essentials, Mythology, Art, Life Science and Physical Science. Classes will be held Monday through Friday, June 6 to June 24 from 9:00am to 12:00pm. Students should meet with their counselor as soon as possible to get the registration information. Students or Parents with all appropriate paperwork signed and completed can register beginning Thursday May 26th through Thursday June 2nd at the Placer School for Adults Office, 390 Finley Street. This will be a FIRST COME FIRST SERVED until all classes are full. There are no spots reserved for graduating seniors or soon-to-be Seniors. Academic and Department Recognition Awards: At these events, academic achievements for Honors, High Honors, and Scholar (GPA 4.0+), athletic achievements, and departmental recognitions will be presented. The awards ceremonies will be held on Wednesday, May 18h at 10:40am. The awards for 9th, 10th and 11th grade students will be presented in the Earl Crabbe Gym and the awards for seniors will be presented in the auditorium at the same time. Senior Scholarship Award Night; also known as our Money Night-- will be held on Wednesday, May 18th at 6:30 pm in the auditorium. This event celebrates seniors who have received monetary school, community, and college scholarships.. To assist us in recognizing these accomplishments, we ask that seniors bring copies of their scholarship letters/print-out of email as soon as they get them to the counseling office, so we can include them in the event’s program. This includes any college specific awards that students have received, i.e. a Merit Award or Honor Award. The deadline for submissions is Monday, May 4th; this is so you can be recognized before your parents and peers. Class Registration for 2016-2017-- Course selection by students was completed in March and the Master Schedule of classes is still in the process of being built. Students whose schedules have conflicts will be summoned by counselors at the end of May. All student schedules will be available through the Portal at the end of July. AP Exams: AP exams begin on May 2nd and continue until May 11th. Please be sure to consult the AP Exam Schedule for your specific time and location. Schedules are also posted in the AP classrooms, the counseling office and online on the PHS Counseling website. Also remember to bring canned goods on testing day to the churches that provide Placer High the space to administer the exams so that they can pass these food items on to the community in need.

GRAD NIGHT 2016, VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!! May 27 & 28th, Please help Placer High School continue to provide a safe and sober grad night. This has been a tradition for 25 years and has kept our children safe and off the streets while they celebrate their milestone! We are at risk of losing this event due to lack of parental participation and monetary support. We are in dire need of help in a variety of ways. We need monetary donations, decorating the day before and Graduation day, Sat May 28th, transforming the ARD into an awesome event for our Seniors! We need help setting up the event as well as food and beverages donations. We are extremely short in many areas and we are desperate for parents of the underclass men to step up and take on these roles. Please make our children's Grad night experience a priority not only for your graduate but all graduates of Placer High! The next grad night meeting is April 11 @ 6:30pm at PHS teachers lounge above the office. Please show up to show support for our school or call to help. Thank you in advance!!! Please call or email Annie Noder at 530-320-6556 [email protected] or sign up at Volunteer Spot.
