● When choosing a live cut Christmas tree, select one with firm needles that don't drop off when the tree is raised up a few inches and dropped to the ground. The bottom of the stump should be moist with some sap present. Cut two inches of the stump and immediately plunge tree into a bucket of warm water. Add SuperThrive to every watering. ● To protect broadleaf evergreens like rhododendron and photinia planted in exposed areas from drying winds, apply Bonide Wilt Stop this month and again in January and February.

● Poinsettias require bright light away from heating vents, fireplaces and drafty windows or doors. Maintain even moisture; plants will wilt dramatically if allowed to dry out. Avoid getting water on the leaves. Click here for Poinsettia Care Sheet.

● If voles have been a problem, apply Bonide MoleMax to those areas they typically frequent before the next snowfall. MoleMax acts as a repellent and will protect the plant material in the treated zones.

● Continue to water regularly lawns, trees and shrubs as long as the ground is not frozen. If natural precipitation does not arrive, this will be necessary throughout the winter. Visit this helpful link on high desert winter watering to read our fact sheet titled IF-13 Winter Watering.

Matt's Tree of the Month: 'Butterflies' Magnolia -- Distinctive, cold-hardy large shrub or small tree that is considered the best of all yellow-flowered magnolias. Late spring blossoms are held upright like butterflies resting on a branch. Plant now and enjoy the show next spring. OK to plant until either ground hard frozen or no water available. Gail's Bulb of the Month: Paperwhites are easy. Just set the bulb in a container of rocks, a vase with some water or plant them in soil. Whichever you choose they will bloom within a few weeks. These bulbs are a wonderful way to get some color and greenery into your holiday season.

Meet the Artist Series - at Moana Lane Garden Center Saturday, December 1: 1:30 - 4:30 pm: Hairstylist and salon owner Monika Johnson began her art career painting still lifes in acrylic and now enjoys painting oil landscapes outside. She'll be painting and displaying her art. Saturday, December 8: 11 am - 3 pm: Award winning artist Donald Britton creates representational oil paintings of the American West landscapes which will be on display. December High Desert Bird-of-the-Month: Red Tail Hawk This is probably the most common hawk in North America. If you have sharp eyes, you'll see several individuals on almost any long car ride, anywhere. Red-tailed Hawks soar above open fields, slowly turning circles on their broad rounded wings. Other times you'll see them atop telephone poles, eyes fixed on the ground to catch the movements of a vole or rabbit, or simply waiting out cold weather before climbing a thermal updraft into the sky. They are large hawks with typical Buteo proportions: very broad rounded wings and a short, wide tail. Large females seen from a distance might fool you into thinking you're seeing an eagle - until an actual eagle comes along! Most are rich brown above and pale below with a streaked belly an, on the wing underside, a dark

bar between shoulder and wrist. The tail is usually pale below and cinnamon-red above, though in young birds, it's brown and banded. "Dark-phase" birds are all chocolate-brown with a warm red tail. "Rufous-phase" birds are reddish-brown on the chest with a dark belly. The Red-tail Hawk is a bird of open country. Look for it along fields and perched on telephone poles, fence posts or trees standing alone or along edges of fields. Fun Facts:

● The Red-tailed Hawk has a thrilling, raspy scream that sounds exactly like a raptor should sound.

● Red-tailed Hawks have been seen hunting as a pair, guarding opposite sides of the same tree to catch tree squirrels.

● Birds are amazingly adapted for life in the air. The Red-tailed hawk is one of the largest birds seen in North America, yet even the biggest females weigh in at only about 3 pounds compared to a similar-sized small dog which might weigh 10 times that.
