Gail's Plant of the Month: Edible Kale This super food has many health benefits -- protein, calcium, iron plus vitamin A, K and C in some of the highest amounts you can get from a leafy vegetable. It is also known for its anti-cancer properties (phytonutrients) and is an excellent source of fiber.

Kale can be easily grown in your landscape and is quite attractive; some varieties reach up to four feet high with beautifully textured leaves that change color as the season gets colder. Kale can be harvested during most stages of its growth and will grow back many times after being cut back without turning sour. Lacinato - sometimes called dinosaur kale, has puckered leaves on upwards stalks of 2 to 3-foot-tall plants; contains phytonutrients; traditionally used for soups. Redbor - very pretty with a frilly leaf and red stems and leaf veins that become a darker purple red in cold weather; grows up from 36 to 48 inches. Red Russian - one of the most common varieties with flat leaves and purple stems; large-leafed plants with very tender leaves used raw in salad or cooked. White Russian - similar to the red variety; very productive and can survive zero degrees without protection. Winterbor - produces the highest yield on 2 to 3 foot tall plants; extremely tolerant of cold weather.

: Protect trees with quick action - 2 to 4 days after application,

18 other destructive insects.

You can begin harvesting baby kale about one month after planting for salads or cooking. When harvesting from a mature plant the center leaves are the most tender to use in salads. Its flavor actually improves and gets sweeter with cooler temperatures. Kale is not only considered a super food, it also looks super in your landscape planted with perennials, vegetables and herbs. You re missing something very good and good for you if you only use kale to decorate your fall containers and buffet platters for a holiday meal!

Gail's Gardening Tips:

Planting for Fall ColorJapanese anemones, asters and coral bells in autumn colors will blend with all the ornamental grasses for a great look in your fall gardens. Fall bulbs will be in the stores the last week of August so

start planning and prepping your soil with our soil building compost SBC. Fall Vegetables NOW is time to plant cool season crops by using a shady area with a container or a garden bed to begin planting seeds and starts for fall harvest. There is plenty of time to add to or start a garden, plant up herbs, berries, grapes, and vegetables that you can harvest well into October. Learning to extend the season in our High Desert with row covers to protect from frost and shade cloth to protect from heat will increase your harvest dramatically and save money on your food budget. We have a line of gourmet kale, lettuce, broccoli and other crops that will grow well in northern Nevada through November with row covers. Growing your own food is not only a popular, healthy and economical choice, but it allows you to know where your food is coming from and control what pesticides that are used on it. Better for you and your family to grow, eat and enjoy.

August High Desert Bird-of-the-Month: House Finch The House Finch is one of my "comfort" birds. No matter if it is winter or summer, if there is snow flying or sun beating down, I can almost always count on seeing a House Finch or two or maybe a dozen. Although they are not a flashy bird (the female is plain, plain, plain), they have other endearing qualities. Their lilting, many note song is delightful to hear over and over. They are highly social birds, so it's not unusual to see several traveling and feeding together. House Finch was originally a western bird. Sometime around 1940 a few caged birds were released on Long Island in New York. The population quickly grew and spread; by the 1990's, House Finch could be found all across the eastern United States and into southern Canada. In the East, House Finch can be found in almost any kind of habitat connected with human development. In their native West, they also frequent more natural habitats including dry deserts, grasslands, and riparian areas. The population of House Finch is very large, estimated at between 300 million and a billion individuals. Despite such large numbers, they are not considered a pest species, unlike others
