FUTURE CHAMPIONS

Emmet Naar (2011), Chris Morrow (2011) and Andrija Dumovic (2011) outside the halls

of residence at the AIS in Canberra.

Three recent Old Boys have taken up residential scholarships at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra. Emmet Naar (2011), Andrija Dumovic (2011) have been awarded basketball scholarships following High’s outstanding success winning both the GPS and National titles for two successive years. Third generation Old Boy Chris Morrow (2011; father David Morrow (1976); grandfather Robert Morrow (1949)) has been awarded a volleyball scholarship.

To have three Old Boys at the AIS is an enormous achievement, unlikely to be rivalled outside specialist sports high schools. Emmet, Andrija and Chris follow in the footsteps of rower Dominic Grimm (2005) and volleyballer Nigel Panagopka (2002). After only a year at the AIS, Dominic became a world champion winning gold in the coxed pair, while Nigel went on to represent Australia during their successful 2004 Olympic qualification at only age 16.

The success reflects the on-going strength and investment into the development of sport at High. Whilst at High, 207cm Andrija played for the Australian Under 17 basketball team at the World Championships in Hamburg, Germany where he was voted the second best Centre in the world for his age. He followed this up by playing for the Australian Under 19 team in Latvia. Not to be outdone, Emmet has this year played as a Point Guard for the Australian Under 19s in Germany, top scoring in a number of matches.

Chris Morrow, a member of Sydney High’s GPS winning volleyball team four years in a row, as well as collecting two CHS championships, is moving from strength to strength. In 2011 Chris was selected for the Australian Junior team that dominated the Trans-Tasman series against New Zealand without dropping a set, as well as travelling to Thailand to play against the best in Asia. To compound this, he was also a member of Sydney High’s all conquering first grade basketball team, and was one of the top high jumpers in Australia, with a personal best of 2.08 metres.

All three of these Old Boys have a mouth-watering future, repeatedly being recognised amongst the best players in the country for their age. The opportunity to shine on the international stage has been strongly developed by Sydney High, through the tireless efforts of the staff, coaches, parents and everyone involved in the programs. With the intensive training and elite coaching provided at the AIS, you are certain to hear more about the success of these Old Boys.

(Thank you to David Morrow for providing the information behind this story.)

Media mention: Dental innovator extracts $100m deal The Australian Financial Reivew (17 May 2012) reported that David Penn (1968) has sold a majority stake in his Southern Cross Dental Laboratories to private equity player Ironbridge Capital in a deal worth nearly $100 million.

... The 56-year-old saw an opportunity to break into the local dental prosthestics market by going to Asia to have crowns, dentures, veneers, bridges and grinding splint made 30 years ago. “When I graduated I knew that in Australia the cost of dental prosthodontics was high,” he said. “I thought there was an opportunity with local laboratories. I went to Hong Kong in 1983 and it took a while to get that right. There were tanks at the borders. That was when we communicated by telex machine.”

... The media-shy Dr Penn said he was adopted as a baby and grew up in Sydney’s Bondi. He went to Sydney Boys’ High School and graduated from the University of Sydney at age 22, when he bought his first practice.

His relatively humble background, growing up with his mother who worked as a pharmacist's assistant and a father who worked in a hardware store, has kept him grounded despite his business success, he said.

Three Kings pay a visit back to School Earlier this year the School had a visit from the King family - three brothers, Warren King (1951), Ross King (1959), Graham King (1950). They had a wonderful time touring the school and speaking with the Principal, Dr Jagger. Two of the brothers donated their blazers. It was the first time that Warren had been back to the school in sixty years.

Warren later wrote to the School archivist, Louise Graul:

It was the first time I had been in the School for 60 years so it was not unexpected to be many changes and improvements. But there was still a strong feeling that the essence and traditions of the School I had known and enjoyed still remained. We were all impressed by the orderliness and the general air of enthusiasm observed amongst the students, which must be a tribute to the staff and the Headmaster, and we appreciated the opportunity to have a word with Dr Jaggar.

We mentioned that attending Sydney High School was very much a King family tradition. Not only were the three of us students, but also our brother Brian King (1955) who

died in 2005 was a student. ... The previous generation of King brothers also made their mark at Sydney High. Alf King (1914) was a School Prefect, Frank King (1916), our father, played in the First XV, Sid King (1924) was School Captain and played in the Australian football [Rugby Union] team.

There is no doubt that Sydney High Schoo1’s history and achievements should be properly collected and preserved in the Archives and I would like to compliment you on your success and knowledge.

Seeking an OC for the Cadet Unit Major Knowles, the current Officer in Command for Sydney High School Cadet Unit, is moving to another posting. The School, therefore, needs a new OC and is seeking expressions of interest from current or ex-ADF members (they need not be Old Boys), for either short-term or long-term appointments. A key requirement of the OC's role is attending parade on Tuesday afternoons from 3pm-6pm.

RIFLE SHOOTING The Rifle Club recently sent a contingent to compete in the 135th NSW Queens Prize which was held at the ANZAC Rifle Range, Malabar.

The team consisted of nine students and two old boy shooters, together with a number of old boy coaches.

We were not long on the range when we discovered the presence of another Old Boy, Scott Monaghan (1955), from the Narromine/Dubbo Rifle Club.

(L to R): Timothy Tran (Year 9), Matt Tong (2009) (currently studying Physio at Sydney University), Scott Monaghan (1955), and Abraham Chan (2009).

The students shot very well indeed, picking up a raft of range medallions, placings in day aggregates and badges in the Queens series and Grand Aggregate.

Old Boy basketballers. Back row: Jackson Meaney (2009), Leonard Teng (2009), Troy Vanspanje, Ben Hayman, Justin Chow (2009); Front row: Mike Wong (2011), George Krastev (2004).

JUNIOR ROWERS LEAD THE WAY The junior rowing program has had an impressive year, consistently triumphing over the top GPS schools. During the 2012 season it became a regular occurrence for the juniors to bring home wins and placings, providing a glimpse of what could be to come in the next few years.

In their first year of rowing, the six year eight quads showed they could beat the best when it counted. The second year eight quad finished the season with two wins and seconds in all other races, in doing so beating every single school except St Ignatius. The year eight first quad rivaled this success with a placing in all bar one of their races.

The year nines weren’t to be overshadowed, however, with the first, second and third quads all regularly knocking off the other GPS schools to record podium finishes.

As always, Sydney High’s rowing program was delivered by the tireless efforts of many Old Boys. Shahar Merom (2009), Gareth Deacon (2010), Adrian Webster (1996), Thomas Parker (1975), Ryan Caetano (2011), Tim Gollan (School Captain 2011), Pravin Radakrishnan (2010), Alan Low (2010), Hayden Schilling (2010), Isaac Eveleigh (2011), Bach Trang (2010) and Koren Fang (2011) all spent many mornings waking before dawn to pass on the experience they developed in their time at High. The rowing program

fundamentally relies on the efforts of Old Boys, a feature of the program that ensures the spirit and traditions of Sydney High are passed on for perpetuity.

Completing this successful coaching team was Junior Coordinator Alexandra Wallace, who ably supported all the rowers and Old Boys throughout the season.

The successes achieved by the juniors in their first and second year are certainly remarkable. Consistent placings and wins sets a very solid base from which an exciting future beckons as these juniors move through their school rowing career.

Congratulations to all involved, and we look forward to avidly following upcoming seasons. The highlights of the junior season were as follows:

OLD BOY OLYMPIANS Did you know that Sydney High can boast at least 20 Olympic athletes? Our first Olympian, Stanley Rowley (enrolled 1890) came 3rd in the 60m, 100m and 200m sprints at Paris in 1900 and our most recent Olympian, Graeme Brewer (1976) took out bronze in the 200m freestyle at Moscow in 1980. Our most successful Olympian was Mervyn Wood (1934) who, in a career spanning the period 1936-1956, took out gold for the single sculls in London in 1948, silver in Helsinki in 1952 and a bronze in the double sculls in Melbourne in 1956. Jack Metcalfe (1929) was the sole Australian medallist at the 1936 Berlin Games, gaining a bronze in the triple jump.

As of 29 May 2011, on the death of Bill Roycroft, Basil Dickinson (1932), now 97 (born on the original Anzac Day – 25 April 1915), is Australia’s oldest surviving Olympian, and is the last survivor of the Australians who competed in the 1936 Berlin Games.

HIGH RUGBY IN 2012 Geoff Andrews (1963), the president of the High Rugby Committee reports on plans for the 2012 season.

The movement of the GPS athletics season to March-May this year has seen the GPS winter sport season put back to May-September.

The 2012 Rugby season has kicked off with trials against St Pius, St Stanislaus at Bathurst and the annual trip to Armidale for all our teams to play TAS on 2 June. Next are trials against Grammar at McKay on 16 June, Cranbrook and Waverley College. The GPS competition runs from Saturday 28 July and finishes with the now traditional last round clash with Grammar on 8 September, this year at Weigall. Details of the fixtures and the rugby program can be found at the school website http://www.sydneyboyshigh.com/sport/winter/rugby and match reports on the new High Rugby website http://www.sydneyhigh.org.au/rugby/

This season, High, Grammar and TAS are playing as a combined fixture against the other Schools. In the Opens, Grammar will play 1sts, the winner of the High-TAS game will play 2nds and the loser will play 3rds. In the age groups, the winner of the High-Grammar trial will play As, the loser Bs and TAS will play Cs. Under the arrangement, all High’s games in the combined group’s home games will be at McKay, enabling a return to the traditional home game days for all our 15 teams.

This year, after many years of sterling service, Geoff Stein (1973) has retired as Master in Charge of Rugby and George Barris (2001) has taken on the role with great enthusiasm. We have also been fortunate to recruit Simon Kacimaiwai, a very experienced coach, most recently of the Cranbrook 1st XV, at 1st XV coach and Head Coach. Simon is being assisted with the 1st and 2nd XV by Pat McDonnell (2005) and Sam Gribble (2006) and by former Wallaby, David Knox. In the age groups, the School staff, Mark Pavone (Head Teacher Sport), Tony Hannon, Con Barris (1971), George Barris (2001), Geoff Stein (1973), Paul Scrivener, Mick Aldous and Anthony Cipolla, are being assisted by old boys Ben Stamati (2007), Samson Lou (2007), Gareth Deacon (2010), Leo Gordon (2010), Alex Koerber (2010), Bill Wang (2011), Isnad Zaman (2011), Michael Wong (2011), Sangeeth Subramaniam (2011) and Kumi Gunaratne (2011).

2012 is the fourth year of the program started in 2009 by the then Junior Rugby Coordinator, Serdar Bolen (1995), to rebuild High rugby from the 13s up. The first group of those boys are now in the 16s. When they started in the 13s, just six of the sixty boys had ever played any sort of football before and the improvement in their skills, fitness and competitiveness has been dramatic. There are still three teams in the age group and we hope they will all keep playing in Opens over the next two years, despite the pressure to concentrate on study.

The 2011 1st XV.

Overall in the last four years, progress in rebuilding Rugby has been tangible albeit slower than hoped. Nevertheless, lots of lessons have been learned and we have a much better idea of how to address the challenges posed by the High’s unique demographic and limited resources. Funding and coaching resources have been boosted and the big challenge now is to break through more of the cultural and organisational barriers stopping the participation and commitment of a greater number of boys. Since 2009, we’ve grown from 11 to 15 teams and our target now is 4 competitive teams in each age group and 20 plus teams overall. With that will come more competitive 1st and 2nd XVs.

How you can help To facilitate support for the High Rugby program from the broader High community, the High Rugby Association is being formed to bring together old boys and past parents with staff, coaches and current parents. If you wish to help in any way with coaching, managing a team, refereeing, first aid, rugby equipment and consumables, rugby trips, contacts, fundraising, sponsorship, trophies, advice, taking a role in the Association, or anything else please contact me at 0438 421 886 or [email protected] or MIC George Barris at [email protected]

Also, the School’s Year 9 intake of 20 extra students provides opportunities for boys with an interest in playing rugby who meet the qualifications for entry, including sons and grandsons of old boys, to come to High. Applications for 2013 close in late July and details of how to apply will be available from mid-June on the School website at

Sydney Boys’ High School has had three homes in its 125-year history.

This new publication celebrates the 125th anniversary of Sydney Boys’ High School by revisiting the years spent in the School’s original home in Castlereagh Street - the site of the foundation of State secondary education in New South Wales.

This 58-page work relies on first-hand accounts and original documents and images to provide a fascinating account of the School’s earliest pupils and masters and their activities at School and beyond.
