DESCRIPTION

The Haven offers a variety of activities for youth to engage in. Our “free arcade” includes air hockey, pool, foozeball, ping pong, and darts (high school only). We also have six computers loaded with games and a Wii system. Outside, we rotate through basketball, street hockey, putt-putt, and tag football. For a quieter activity, puzzles, books, and board games are available, as well. The Haven relies on community support, grants, fundraisers, and volunteers in order to achieve offering the programs in place at no cost to youth or their families. “Time flies when you’re having fun!” For some folks who have been associated with The Ha-ven since the doors opened in March 16, 1998 that is very true. Our middle-school drop-in program is growing and thriving. Daily atten-dance at Drop-In averages nearly 20 youth from

a roster of more than fifty students. Recently, a father told us he attended Friday Night Live, a program for high school students in the early years of The Haven. That means The Haven is now serving a second generation.

SPRING BREAKHAPPY 17TH BIRTHDAY!

“Everything’s a Canvas” is the working art stu-dio of Suzanne Lawler located at 1340 Inverness Farms Road, Martinsville (formerly located on the downtown square). Upon entering the door of her studio it is evident that it is truly a “Playground for Your Imagination.” Hand painted murals fill the walls creating a fun and relaxing environ-ment that promotes self-discovery in everyone.

Our Haven youth will begin their arts experience Friday, April 10 and continue the next three Fri-day afternoons. Suzanne Lawler will direct the project which is funded by the Community Foun-dation of Morgan County through its annual arts grant program.

Tuesday, March 24, The Haven youth enjoyed lunch at the local golden arches then traveled to Greenwood to the movies. The movie for the day was “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” and the theater was nearly sold out. A great time was enjoyed by all.

HONORING OUR YOUTHThe Haven staff is proud of our youth. Many of them have achieved awards and honors since January 1. Several of them have been awarded perfect attendance, honor roll, and “Cut Above the Rest” (citizenship award). Some of those honored include the following:

• Dylan Baldwin placed second in the Spelling Bee.

• Kennedy Wilson was inducted into the National Junior Honor Society

• Kylee Wilson, along with the members of her choir, earned a silver award at the Indiana State School Music Association Organizational contest on March 14.

Some of those making the honor roll include Sophia Finney, Jhett Ross, and Brandon Libecap. Jhett Ross, Jennifer Davis, Iris Tumey, Ethan Tumey, and Isaac Lines were awarded “Cut Above the Rest”. Perfect attendance awards went to Jhett Ross, Austin Carver, and Jennifer Davis. Several of the youth participate in a high ability class. These include include Lauren Whitaker, Jhett Ross, Brandon Libecap, and Sophia Finney. Congratulations and keep up the good work.

ARTS GRANT

A NEW SPRING LOOKThe ladies bathroom at The Haven is undergoing an early spring face lift. New partitions, vinyl flooring, fixtures, ceiling lighting, paint and window treatment are included in a gift to The Haven for this purpose. Mr. Forest Rawlins served as general contractor for the project. It is a very attractive

upgrade to The Haven facility.
