ALL ABOUT NNLC
NNLC Charter
CLUB PURPOSE
The purpose of the New Neighbors League
Club (NNLC) is to bring together the new
neighbors of the area so they may meet and
become friends while adjusting to new
surroundings. The Club is a not-for-profit
social organization with a variety of interest
groups and special activities, including monthly
luncheons and speakers.
HISTORY
NNLC is the official social club of New
Neighbors League, Inc. (NNLI), which was
founded in Dayton, Ohio in 1939 by Theodore
R. Briggs. Out of the business of greeting new
residents grew a recognized need for a social
organization allowing newcomers to meet
others who were also new to the area.
Theodore’s wife, Bunny, lived in many cities
throughout the United States and knew the
loneliness associated with moving into
unfamiliar areas. With the aid of the Ohio
Federated Women’s Club, the Constitution and
By-Laws for NNLC were drafted. The first
chapter was chartered in Cincinnati, Ohio in
1943. As the greeting service operations were
established, new club chapters were founded.
Dayton was home for New Neighbors League
until 1986 when Corporate and Club
Headquarters were moved to Atlanta, Georgia
and Cheryl Beaudreault assumed the position
of National President. Currently, there are
fourteen operations nationwide. Each chapter
operates independently within established
guidelines and under the direction of a local
Board of Directors and a Club Director.
MEMBERSHIP
Membership in NNLC is open to anyone who
is new to the area (less than 1 year) , has been
visited by an area representative and invited to
a prospective membership function. There is a
one-time membership fee of $25.00 to join
NNLC with transfer privileges to any sister
chapter. You must also subscribe to The Happy
Wanderer ($20.00 fee), our club newsletter, to
be an active member. The annual renewal fee is
$25.00.

Coffee
Moving into a new community can be exciting, overwhelming, and often times, lonely. NNLC can help make the transition easier by helping women find new friends and
activities. If you know of someone new to the area, invite her to join us at the monthly coffee where she can learn more about
everything NNLC has to
offer.
The next coffee is:
Tuesday, October 1,
9:30am at St. Louis County Library, Daniel Boone Branch, 300 Clarkson
Road, Ellisville, MO 63011. Meet in the Red Room. (Parking on the north side (lower end) makes for easier access to meeting
rooms.)

Always be yourself, because the people that matter don't mind and one's that mind don't matter. You are who
you are & one of God's children.

Ladies, I hope you have enjoyed these

TRICK OR TREAT
LADIES:
Here it is October already & this month is fun for all of
us.
Don't forget that at the luncheon this month you are asked to wear costumes if you want to, and the
costumes will be judged for prizes.
Also at the October luncheon the new members of the board will be installed. And on that note, let me thank all of you who are willing to serve on the board giving of your time & talents. IT IS
SO VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.
Here is a treat for October. APHROISMS: These are short, pointed sentences expressing a wise or clever observation or general truth, such as the
following:
The nicest thing about the future is that
it always starts tomorrow.
Money will buy a fine dog, but only
kindness will make him wag his tail.
Seat belts are not as confining as
wheelchairs.
How come it takes so little time for a child who is afraid of the dark to become a teenager who wants to stay out
all night?
Why is it that at class reunions you
feel younger than everyone else looks?
No one has more driving ambition than
the teenager who wants to buy a car.
After a certain age, Happy Hour is a
nap.
Be careful reading fine print, there's no
way you're going to like it.
The trouble with bucket seats is that
not everyone has the same size bucket.
Money can't buy happiness-------But somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a big expensive luxury car than a cheap
little cramped car.
October is the entry month for the coming holidays beginning with All Hallows Eve – better known as Halloween. Orange and black decorate our homes for Halloween; orange, greens, brown and tan, leaves and pumpkins for Thanksgiving; and then the red, green, gold and silver of Christmas. Each month there is a holiday to look forward to and a new theme for decorating our homes to
celebrate.
While we enjoy and anticipate the coming holidays, NNLC members need to be thinking ahead to December 10th when we will hold our annual Tinsel Trail. Tinsel Trial is one of our most anticipated activities and we can’t wait to have our many new members take part in the fun and festivities. Please be sure to read the articles in the Happy Wanderer for news regarding volunteer
opportunities.
Remember our October luncheon is also a Halloween costume event and a very surprising number of our members enjoy dressing up and vying for wonderful prizes. I hope to see you there, but if I don’t recognize you… it just might be because your
costume is way too good!
In Fun and Friendship, Gay Hampton President NNLC 636-329-1044
Who doesn’t love the month of October? Crisp clear evenings, football games, trips to the pumpkin patch, hayrides, caramel apples, ghosts and goblins, gourds and pumpkins to decorate our
homes and front porches.

A nyone New By You?
Here’s a quick cut out to keep in your purse/car/brief case for those times you
come across a new person who you would like to introduce to NNLC.
WELCOME TO ST. LOUIS! I understand you are new to the area and want to say “hello”. When I moved here, I joined a great women’s social organization called
New Neighbors League Club of St.
Louis.
I met other people who had recently moved here, who could answer my many questions and provide me with fun and friendship. There are over 25 activity groups, including:
Bunco • Golf • Tennis • Book Clubs • Wine and Dine • Couples Dining • Ladies’ Evening Out ...The list goes
on and on.
There is a Welcome Coffee on the 1st Tuesday of each month at
St. Louis County Library
Daniel Boone Library Branch
300 Clarkson Rd., Ellisville, MO 63011
(Lower level in the Red Room)
where you can meet other new arrivals . If you are interested, just call our Club Director, Donna Bersett, 314-205-3010 or email her at [email protected]. You can also check out our website www.newneighborsleague.com to learn more.

Ready for some holiday merriment? Our plans for Tinsel Trail are moving forward with four homes on the tour that will be transformed into winter wonderlands. It’s so much fun and we get such great decorating ideas for our own homes!!! Those
offering their homes for the tour are: Celeste Litton, Kathy Wanhatalo, Sue Watkins and Michelle Wherry.
Teams of volunteers come in to decorate and tickets are sold for the tour of these beautiful homes. The money raised will go to the two deserving children’s causes supported by our own Care & Share Committee.
Prudy Bertolino and Nancy Wilson are the co-chairs for the event. We are in the early planning stages and will be holding an organizational meeting at 10:00 am Monday, October 7th at the Daniel Boone Library, 300 Clarkson Road, Ellisville (lower level, green room. Park in the lower lot).
We are asking for volunteers. Volunteering is half of the fun…
meeting new people as well as seeing old friends while you lend a
hand. It could be decorating, helping find house “captains” to
coordinate the decorating schedules for each home; overseeing ticket
sales; setting up the “preview” night bus for the workers,
or other details as needed.
Please contact one of the co-chairpersons if you’re
coming to the meeting, interested in volunteering or just

STL TRIVIA
The Central West End
The Central West End (just east of Forest Park) was developed during the time leading up to the 1904 World’s Fair. St. Louis anticipated the influx of visitors and guests. Many of the wealthy were moving away from older city neighborhoods to the east, resettling here. Therefore many of the avenues and boulevards in the area, designed as part of the Renaissance Revival and the Romanesque movements, possess a grandeur and elegance only achieved through great expense. One of the most dominant features of this neighborhood is
the Cathedral Basilica.
This interesting neighborhood, which has long prized heritage, tradition, and social responsibility, was home to the artistic set —including T.S. Eliot and Tennessee Williams (who set The Glass Menagerie here) and many early proponents of women’s suffrage, including Kate Chopin,
author of The Awakening.
Today, visitors and residents can stroll through some of the stately avenues and enjoy culture and history. But it is also St. Louis’s quintessential urban-eclectic neighborhood. Nowhere else in the area exists the same combination of architecture, pedestrian-friendly streets, restaurants, shopping and nightlife choices. Often described as “bohemian-chic,” or Saint Louis’s version of “The Village,” the charm of the people and places of the CWE evokes a feeling of sophistication and cosmopolitan
living.
Today, the Central West End is a great place to go with friends, stroll the area and have lunch or dinner. It’s unique!

SHARE YOUR EXPERTISE
Activities within the club do not have to be on-going ventures. We know a lot of you have expertise in a wide variety of fields. In addition to our activity groups, we’re also looking for people who can
share that expertise in a workshop.
Would you be willing to run a couple hour training session on something you are good at like web page development, or closet organization, or furniture refin-ishing? We would really love to see your skills. The process is the same as that for starting a group. Just send a description of what you plan to cover, a date and loca-tion to meet and some contact information to the Happy Wanderer Editor. Be sure to give people enough advance notice so
they can RSVP to you.
We all have hidden talents. Care to
share yours with us?

My favorite Halloween Poem, told to me as a child by my Aunt Leona:
LITTLE ORPHANT ANNIE
By James Whitcomb Riley
Little Orphant Annie's come to our house to stay, An' wash the cups an' saucers up, an' brush the crumbs away,
An' shoo the chickens off the porch, an' dust the hearth, an' sweep, An' make the fire, an' bake the bread, an' earn her board-an-keep;
An' all us other childern, when the supper-things is done, We set around the kitchen fire an' has the mostest fun, A-listenin' to the witch-tales 'at Annie tells about,
An' the Gobble-uns 'at gits you
Ef you Don't Watch Out!
Wunst they wuz a little boy wouldn't say his prayers, - An' when he went to bed at night, away up-stairs,
His Mammy heerd him holler, an' his Daddy heerd him bawl, An' when they turn't the kivvers down, he wuzn't there at all!
An' they seeked him in the rafter-room, an' cubby-hole, an' press, An seeked him up the chimbly-flue, an' ever'-wheres, I guess; But all they ever found wuz thist his pants an' roundabout: -
An' the Gobble-uns 'll git you
Ef you Don't Watch Out!
An' one time a little girl 'ud allus laugh an' grin, An' make fun of ever' one, an' all her blood-an'-kin;
An' wunst, when they was "company," an' ole folks wuz there, She mocked 'em an' shocked 'em, an' said she didn't care! An' thist as she kicked her heels, an' turn't to run an' hide, They wuz two great big Black Things a-standin' by her side,
An' they snatched her through the ceilin' 'for she knowed what she's about! An' the Gobble-uns 'll git you
Ef you Don't Watch Out!
An' little Orphant Annie says, when the blaze is blue, An' the lamp-wick sputters, an' the wind goes woo-oo! An' you hear the crickets quit, an' the moon is gray, An' the lightnin'bugs in dew is all squenched away, -
You better mind yer parunts, an' yer teachurs fond an' dear, An' cherish them 'at loves you, an' dry the orphant's tear, An' he'p the pore an' needy ones 'at clusters all about,
Er the Gobble-uns 'll git you
Ef you Don't Watch Out!
