    Its A New Year!

    lenges, opportunities for new experiences,

chances to make new friends and a new year

its tenth year, I can tell you that I am excited

about the new year and all of its opportunitiesand possibilities. As Director, I feel blessed to

have such a strong Officer Team to lead this

Chapter in 2013. Our entire Officer Team is

dedicated to making 2013 a year to remem-

    ber.

with the Harley Owners Group since my husband signed up in 2003.

First Motorcycle - We owned a Honda back in 1985 that was stolen. When it was found it had been

but would one day like to own a Deluxe Heritage.

Favorite Texas City - So far I have not visited many cities in Texas so I really don't have a favorite. I

am hoping that I can get some travel time in within the next year or two so that I can make a deter-

mination. I would definitely like to visit around the Austin area as I have not been there yet.

Favorite travel destinations for Harley rides - So far I think I have to say that my very first ride to Kentucky has to be my favorite

ride. That can always change if I manage to get in any more!

Why I am proud to be a Woodlands HOG Officer - I am very proud to be a member of the Harley Owner's Group because it has so

many wonderful people that I never would have met if it had not been for our Harley. I have made some lifetime friends and being

an officer to me is a very special opportunity to share the way I feel about Harley with others that feel the same way!

    Guy Abramo & Ken McClymonds

The Woodlands HOG Spring Vacation Ride Run to Big Bend is scheduled to depart the Texaco station on Saturday, April 13 and

will return the following Saturday April 20. The ride will take us through some of the most famous riding roads in Texas including the

famous 3 Sisters as well as some of the most unique and beautiful country of Big Bend National Park. Well also make sure to Ride

to Eat and experience some great food along the way.

On day 1 our lunch stop will be at Saltlick BBQ and then we travel through

historical Luckenbach, Fredericksburg and on to Kerrville to stay the night.

Day 2 will be a lot of fun for those who like curves. We depart the hotel and

follow the Guadalupe River past Lost Maples Park, stop in Leakey, then we

take the 100 mile loop of the famous 3 Sisters route known for its curves before

stopping at the famous Hog Pen in Leakey. We spend the second evening in

Del Rio en route to Alpine/Big Bend. Anyone interested in ABC points can find

some difficult to obtain letters near Del Rio.

On day 3 we depart and head west on US 90 stopping at the High Level

Bridge over the Pecos before arriving in Alpine, TX where well spend 4 nights.

It will be nice to unpack and use Alpine as our home base while we explore Big

Bend National Park & surrounding area.

On days 4-6 we will explore most of Big Bend National Park and surrounding

area where well see plenty of open, rugged country, and lots of mountain

curves. Well experience destinations like Study Butte, Boquillias Canyon, the

Rio Grande River, Chisos Mtn. Lodge, Terlingua ghost town, Presidio. Well

also ride to see the Marfa Lights Viewing Area, and the McDonald Observa-

tory near Fort Davis. The McDonald Observatory has 2 programs on Tuesdaynight; Twilight and the Star Party that are optional night rides. There will be

another optional night visit to the Marfa Lights Viewing Area to see the lights

    from UFOs.

On day 7 well be leaving Alpine early and travel to San Antonio for our last

night with a stop at Coopers BBQ in Junction, TX where they serve great BBQ

and one of the best bbqd pork chops ever. Our hotel in San Antonio is near

the Alamo and the Riverwalk and the annual San Antonio Fiesta will be in full

swing so there will be plenty to experience. That night well plan on having a

group dinner if interested, and before we take the short ride back home the

next day different we can have breakfast at The Magnolia Pancake Haus in

    San Antonio.

The ride is planned to be 2,040 miles of fun, curves, fantastic scenery and camaraderie. It should be a great trip!

Member RidesOur 2012 Trip Can We Top It In 2013?

    JP Reed & Ken Turnell

A trip to Michigan, including through the Upper Peninsula (UP), around Lake Michigan and into Wisconsin to visit the Harley-Davidson

    Museum and back home.

We began talking and thinking about this trip in 09. We continued talking and thinking about it in 10and began planning it in

    11. Due to family issues on my part, it didnt come to fruition until July of 2012.

Several months before our planned departure date, the detailed analysis of planned routes, hotel stops, sites to visit, motorcycle

preparation, etc., kicked in much to the chagrin of both our wives, Marti and Dianne. They were counting the days until we left more

anxiously than we were just so they wouldnt have to hear about it anymore.

JP and I carefully planned each of our 11 days, while always agreeing to remain flexible due to weather, traffic, mechanical prob-

lems or any other unforeseen circumstances.

About 2 weeks before leaving, we decided to do a shakedown ride. Both bikes had recently been serviced including two new tires

for JP and one for me. It rained on us pretty hard several times during this ride. Thats ok, I radio JP. We need the practice in

case it rains on our trip! Me and my big mouth!

Wednesday, July 11th: (*KSU 5:40 am)

Wearing my full rainsuit, I ride my (briefly) shiny Harley down the driveway in the rain and meet JP at Kingwood Harley-Davidson to

begin our adventure. It rains steady until Livingston, TX with on and off hard showers throughout the day. Nothing interesting or ex-

citing today just gas and go to make good miles.

We stop for the night in Jackson, TN. Our goal for the day. Stop 7:00 pm 697 miles

Thursday, July 12th: (KSU 7:00 am)

Weather looks gray, but not raining when we wake up. Great! Pack, breakfast, check-outIts

raining! Full rainsuit again for almost the entire day. It is pouring as I lead us through Nashville.

I radio JP asking if he can see anything. His response is that he can see me. Very helpful, JP!

The Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY is our planned stop today.

Even if, like me, you have never had a Corvette, it is still worth visiting as it is very well done, inmy opinion.

We enjoy lunch at the museum and then continue heading north. Anywhere north and east of

Indianapolis, IN is our goal for the day. We stop for the night in Anderson, IN. Goal achieved.

Stop 6:45 pm (et) 461 miles

Friday, July 13th: (KSU 7:55 am et)

Beautiful weather for our easy day. We arrive at my sister and brother-in-laws home in

Livonia, MI and relax for the remainder of the day. Stop 12:15 pm et 250 miles

    Saturday, July 14th:

Although the weather is great, there will be no riding at all today. I spend most of

the day with my sister and then have a get-together with other family and old highschool friends. More enjoyable for me than JP, but I appreciate and thank him for

    his indulgence.

Sunday, July 15th: (KSU 7:55 am et)

The day is going to be beautiful again as we leave my sisters home well rested.

The heart now of our trip really begins.

Heading due north and crossing the 45th Parallel around Gaylord, MI, our first

planned stop is just before crossing over The Mackinac Bridge. We take lost of

photos of both the bridge and Mackinac Lighthouse before crossing the

  • 7/28/2019 Wanderer - 201301 v8

    13/19

Mighty Mac. There are two lanes each direction on the bridge with the center

lane consisting of metal grating used to dissipate wind load. It can be a little un-settling to ride on the grating, since you can look straight down several hundred

feet to the water, so we ride the concrete lane most of the way Weenies!!!

Once across the bridge, we continue north, now in the U.P., to Sault Ste. Marie, MI.,

known as The Soo to Michiganders. Once we check into our hotel, we ride

downtown, park, and marvel at the Soo Locks. A little bit of Soo Locks trivia: Lake

Superior is 21 feet higher than Lake Huron and these locks transition freighters

from the high side to the low side and vice versa. The amazing thing (at least

to me) is that the water level change in all four locks is accomplished simply with

gravity. There are no pumps of any type involved. The largest freighter on the

Great Lakes today is 1,005 feet long and 105 feet wide. There is only 2-1/2

feet clearance on each side of the largest ships as they pass through the widest of

the four locks. With passports in hand, we leave Sault Ste. Marie, MI and cross the International

Bridge into Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario for dinner; returning before it gets dark,

which doesnt occur until about 10:00 pm when this far north. Days mileage

    345 miles

Monday, July 16th: (KSU 7:50 am et)

Its a little cold and foggy as we leave The Soo. For the first time I consider a

heavier jacket, but decide to tough it out for a couple of hours to see if it warms

    up. It does.

There are lots of places to visit and photograph today! Within 2 hours we reach

our first stop Point Iroquois Lighthouse, one of the many along the Lake Superior

shoreline. Our second stop reaches the northern-most point of our trip WhitefishPoint. The Edmund Fitzgerald sank 17 miles northwest of this light station in 1975.

Next stop, Upper Tahquamenon Falls. Due to certain natural chemicals in the wa-

ter, these falls appear golden. Hard to describe without seeing them but suffice

it to say, they are quite beautiful.

Lastly, we stop at a log slide. The U.P. is known for, among other things, its log-

ging industry. In bygone days, trees would be cut and then slid down many of the

steep embankments along Lake Superior to awaiting barges that would haul the

logs to nearby mills. Again, hard to describe but very impressive to see!

We stop in Seney (pronounced See-Nee) for lunch at, quite simply, The Seney Bar.

The lady bartender is also the City Treasurer. Small town might overestimate

the size of some of these U.P. towns.

From Seney we head north to the quiet little harbor town of Grand Marais, then

southwest along the edge of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and finally south

through the Hiawatha National Forest toward Wisconsin. Our planned destination

for the day had been somewhere around Green Bay, WI, but due to our sight-

seeing and zigzagging around the U.P., we didnt quite make it. We stop in

Oconto, WI for the night. Ill let everyone find that for themselves on a map. Stop

Tuesday, July 17th: (KSU 8:35 am ct)

Its surprisingly warm as we pack up and head to Milwaukee. When we pull into

the Harley-Davidson Museum it seems really warm even to us. We have lunch at

the museum caf, pick up our tickets for the Plant and Museum tour scheduled the

next day, and check into our hotel.

Watching the Weather Channel in our room, we find out that Milwaukee set a

record for this date 100. That explained why even we Texans were warm.

Before dinner, a quick 30-minute storm blows through and drops the temperature

to 75. We have dinner with a childhood friend of JPs and her husband at a lo-

cal micro-brewery on the Milwaukee River. Old friends and pleasant weather

made for a great evening! Stop Noon ct 153 miles.

    Wednesday, July 18th:

No riding today. This is our second and last rest day. We walk from our hotel to the museum. With bright sunshine and warm

weather, we assemble for the 30-minute bus ride to the Steel Toe Tour of the H-D Pilgrims Road Powertrain Operations facility in

Menomonee Falls. And yes, you do wear steel toe caps over your shoes or boots. Our tour departs at 9:00 am and returns about

noon. The tour is well done and worth the time.

And I suggest that you visit the museum if you get the chance. We spent four hours enjoying it and could easily have spent twice that

if we had stopped and absorbed every display.

While enjoying lunch at the museum caf again, we are surprised when Valerie Ledterman, our local HOG rep, walks in. We talk

for a few minutes, tell her we took the morning tour and plan to spend the afternoon in the museum. She invites us to meet her later

in the museum restaurant for drinks. Drinks with Valerie turns into drinks and dinner. About two hours later, JP and I walk back to

our hotel knowing that tomorrow begins our journey home, but right now, we just savor the great day we just experienced.

Thursday, July 19th: (KSU 7:55 am ct)

Are we going to get wet this morning? It sure looks like it, but not a drop of rain the whole day.

South from Milwaukee into northern Illinois. We cross over the Mississippi at Savanna, IL into Iowa. We ride roughly parallel to the

Mississippi River, south to Hannibal, MS, finishing for the day in OFallon, MS just northwest of St. Louis. We enjoy beautiful scen-

ery all day. Today was definitely all about the ride, not the destination. Stop 7:25 pm ct 516 miles

Friday, July 20th: (KSU 6:50 am ct)

As we load the bikes, we know this might be a tough day. Its already pretty warm.

We head south out of Missouri, then southwest through Arkansas toward Little Rock. The temperature is rising but bearablethat is

until lunch time. After we stop for gas and lunch in Newport, Arkansas, it starts to get really hot. With the sun from above and the

road and engine heat from below, I am incredibly hot and, I admit it, I whine to JP that I need to stop. Im afraid that I wont put my

feet down when we do stop and Ill just fall over! On the south side of Little Rock we find a hotel. The air conditioning never felt

better! Stop 2:30 pm ct 392 miles

Saturday, July 21st: (KSU 5:35 am ct)

Sleeping in our own beds tonight sounds great, so we start before sunrise to beat the heat. Not much to write about between Little

Rock and Houston we all know that route. We just watch our speed in all the little East Texas towns like Diboll.

Once home, I unload the scooter, dump the bags in the bedroom and take a shower at the strong suggestion of my extremely loving,

yet tolerant wife. Its been a great trip, but boyITS ALWAYS GOOD TO BE HOME! Stop 1:40 pm ct 473 miles

There are many other smaller, side stories to tell about this trip, but suffice it to say that it just went as we had planned. The Harleys

ran flawlessly. We rode for 2-1/2 days, then a rest day, 2-1/2 more days of riding, then another rest day, then 2-1/2 days to

ride home. There are plenty of riders who could and would do more miles per day, but this trip suited us just fine.
