Words of Thanks

As you know, in presenting research, nothing is totally foolproof. Names are often misspelled, family relationship errors are often cited, especially when so many family members have the same names and their children have the same names as their children. If you, the reader, find any errors or inaccuracies in this publication, please do not hesitate to inform the writer so that the appropriate changes can be made.

I'd especially like to thank Bryan and Shannon Prince at the Raleigh Township Museum in North

Buxton, Ontario and their staff for the Thomas Grinage lineage charts; Connie Travis and Gwen Robinson at the WISH Centre in Canada; Martha Beecham of Washington, Pennsylvania; the late Charles Lawson of Walnut Creek, California; Patrick McCurdy of San Jose or Palo Alto, California; Ronald Palmer of Washington, D. C.; the late Alvah Headlee of Waynesburg, Pennsylvania who first showed me the Grinage Bible Records; Michael Boykin and Ellen Cochran, George Gordon, Christine Bennett and Cathy Sellers for the Jonathan Grinage line; Charlotte Nelson, Mary Elizabeth Smith, Shirlene Walls and Elaine Blyden for the Sylvester Grinage line, Ethel Lawson, Josephine, Brown, Carl Grinage, Sr. and Richard Grinage for the Benjamin Grinage line; William Davison for posting all of the Grinage obits on the internet; Paul Sluby, Barbara Hughes Smith, Floyd Handsor, and so many others.

I would also like to thank the Carnegie Library Oakland Branch in Pittsburgh and the Hillman Library at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for the use of their census records; the Southwestern Pennsylvania Historical Society in Washington, Pennsylvania; The Western Pennsylvania Historical Society in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; The Amherstburg Echo in Amherstburg, Canada; Mary Childs who lives in Grinage Run, Waynesburg, Pennsylvania; the late Arleigh Grinage of West Finley, Pennsylvania; The Greene County Courthouse in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania; The Washington County Courthouse in Washington, Pennsylvania; and the Cornerstone Genealogical Society in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania.

All of you have contributed in so many ways, whether it be by the use of your material, by

helping me to make connections, or by helping me to combine the information I already had with new information. I feel this work is just a start. There is more to be done on this work, but for now we'll say it's completed.

"A moment recorded is a moment forever saved."

The Origin of the John Grinage Family of Greene County, Pennsylvania

Grinedge, born perhaps 1670, "formerly a Negro of Thomas Marsh," was a resident of Kent Island,

Maryland. In 1699 he was acquitted of cohabiting with a white woman named Jane Shore in Talbot County, Maryland. He posted bond of 2,000 pounds of tobacco and a white man posted another 1,000 pounds of tobacco as security for his appearance in court.

[Talbot County judgments 1691-1698, in Talbot County Land Record Liber A.B. 18, pt. 2, p. 524; Talbot County Judgments, Liber M. W. #1, p. 49 (second run of numbered pages), MdHR. by Kimmel].

His descendants were: i. Zachariah, "mulatto" head of a Queen Ann's County household of 8 "other free" in 1790 [MD:

100]. ii . Sherry, head of a Caroline County, Maryland household of 6 "other free" and 4 slaves in 1790

[MD:37]. iii. Benjamin, "free Negro" head of a Queen Ann's County, Maryland household of 6 other free" in

1790. iv. Benjamin, "free Mulatto" head of a Queen Ann's County household of 6 "other free" in 1790. v. Thomas, head of a Queen Ann's County household of 5 "other free" in 1790 [MD: 100]. vi. Cusby, head of a Queen Ann's County household of 5 "other free" in 1790 [MD: 1001. vii. Jacob, "free Mulatto" head of a Queen Ann's County household of 4 "other free" in 1790 [MD:

100]. viii. John, rented 2 acres of land in Queen Ann's County, from Richard Hall on 18 November 1785

[CD: no. 2, fol.52]. ix. Jacob, "free Negro' head of a Delaware household in 1790 [DE:541. x. George Grenish, "Negro" head of a Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania household of 6 "other

free" in 1790 [PA:2321. xi. John Greenough, head of a Massachusetts household of 3 "other free" in 1790 [MA: 149]. xii. Sampson, head of a Stafford, Virginia household of 3 "other free" in 1810.

It is not known whether the "Grinedge" mentioned above is the progenitor of the Grinage family in

Greene County, Pennsylvania; however, a story told by local Grinage family members that a slave owner's daughter fell in love with a Grinage slave, seems to be similar to the story about "Grinedge" mentioned above. The story goes on to say that the slave owner sent them North, to protect them, and gave them a piece of land on which to live.

The Greene County, Pennsylvania Grinage/Grinnage family may have settled in New Jersey then

Philadelphia before locating to southwestern Pennsylvania, for a Jonathan Grinage is listed as an inhabitant of Burlington, Burlington County, New Jersey in the ratables of 1773-1774. A few years later

2 in the 1790 census of Gloucester County, New Jersey a free John Grenage (Negro) was listed. One son of the Greene County Grinage's lists his origin of birth as New Jersey; however, the Grinages may have lived in Maryland before migrating to New Jersey as already alluded, for there were several Grinages in Queen Anne County in the 1790's and beyond.

Also according to the Hatch-Grinage Papers in the Heartman Collection of Louisiana, the name Grinage appeared as a slaveholder in Louisiana; however, the connection to the Greene County Grinage families has not yet been made.

Recent information has revealed that the "Greenidges" are from the Caribbean Islands and the West Indies. Several Greenidges living in the St. Phillips, Barbados area near Fowl Bay or Nursery Road moved about the island as they grew up, and many have relocated to other islands like Jamaica, St. Kitts, and Trinidad and Tobago. It seems that most of those with a direct island connection spell their surname "Greenidge." Currently, there are thousands of Island descendant Greenidges living in the states of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania in the United States.

The Grinage name spelled Greenidge, Grinnage, Grenage, Greenwich, Greenage, etc., in southwestern Pennsylvania first appeared in the 1810 federal census for Union Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania as John Greenwich (mulatto) with eight free persons in his household; age and sex of family members are not listed. Then in the 18.20 census for Greene County, Pennsylvania the name John Grenige appears in Whiteley Township. In his household there are a total of 14 free colored persons: 2 males under 14; 5 males 14-26; 1 male 45 and up; 3 females under 14; 2 females 14-25; and 1 female 45 and up.

From this breakdown, there seems to be a husband and wife both 45 years of age or older. Since there is no breakdown of the ages of the members of the John Greenwich family in Fayette County in 1810, it is not clear whether or not this is the same John Grinage that now appears in Greene County, Pennsylvania; however, if we assume that it is, six new family members have been added which is entirely possible during a ten-year period.

In the census of 1830 the name Jonathan Grinage appears in Union Borough, Fayette County with I male under 10; 1 male 10-24; 1 male 36-55; 3 female under 10; and I female 24-36. Also in 1830, a John Grinage reappears in Whiteley Township, Greene County with only six free colored persons: 2 males 10-24; 1 male 55-100; 1 female under 10; 1 female 10-24; and I female 55- 100 in his family. Jonathan appears to be a either a John's son or brother.

If you compare the breakdown in John Grinage's household in the 1830 census for Greene County to that of the John Grinage in the 1820 census for Greene County, you can see that the five males 14-26 in the 1820 census are no longer at John's house. Neither are the two females 14-25 or the two females that

3 were under 14 at the time of the 1820 census. This might suggest: (1) several of the males and females listed in the 1820 census for Greene County were not Grinages by name, but boarders or (2) several of the males, who can be traced by their last name, left the state or country since the Grinage name is not present, in the other Pennsylvania counties or (3) several of the females got married and are now on their own. The tracking of the females is more difficult because once they married, their surname changed to that of their husbands.

In the 1840 census, the name John Greenage appears in Whiteley Township along with the names Thomas Greenage and Benjamin Grinage as heads of household as follows: 1840 John Greenage 1 male 10-24 1 male 55-100 1 female under 10 1 female 10-24 1 female 55-100

Thomas Greenage 2 males under 10 1 male 36-55 1 female under 10 1 female under 10 1 female 24-36

Benjamin Grinage 3 males under 10 1 male 24-36 1 female under 10 1 female 24-36

If we examine the household of John Greenage in the 1840 census, we find that two of the persons

in his household are between the ages of 55-100. These two persons are probably John Grinage, Sr. and his wife. The male and the female between the ages of 10-24 may be (1), John Grinage, Sr.'s son and perhaps his son's wife or (2), two of John Grinage, Sr.'s children. The female that is under ten years of age could also be (1), John Grinage, Sr.'s daughter or (2), a child of his son's. From this census it appears that John has two sons; Thomas is the oldest son, and Benjamin is the younger son. We have learned that Thomas and Benjamin are brothers, and the location of all three families in Whiteley Township, Greene County, further suggests the kinship between these families as well.

The first census where one can see the actual names, ages, and race of all family members is the 1850 census. Here we find the name Thomas -Grinage in Perry Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania as follows: 1850 Perry Township Age Sex Race Occupation Farms Worth Thos Grinage 50 M Mulato 'Farmer $2000 Hannah 24 F Mu Sarah 17 F Mu Johnathan 17 M Mu Solomon 14 M Mu Thomas 11 M Mu Benjamin 6 M Mu John 4 M Mu William 2 M Mu Linley 1 M Mu

We also find the name Benjamin Grinage residing in Center Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania as follows: 1850 Census continued Center Township Age Sex Race Occupation Farms Worth

All family members were born in Pennsylvania except Benjamin (46) who lists, only in the 1850 census, a Maryland birth, which was probably his father's birthplace and not his own. There is no John Grinage, Sr. in the 1850 census which is probably accurate for the Grinage Bible Records (pages 70-74) state that he died on February 8, 1847; however, there should be a third family of Grinage's as shown in the 1840 census. This is probably the Jonathan Grinage, Sr. line, whom I have included on pages 51-69. It is not known how long John Grinage, Sr.'s wife lived after his death. The family of Jonathan Grinage, Sr. removed from Uniontown in Fayette, County, Pennsylvania to Allegheny County, Pennsylvania after Jonathan filed for bankruptcy there.

In 1860, Benjamin Grinage now states his birthplace as New Jersey instead of Maryland and appears in Centre Township, Greene County as follows: 1860 Centre Township Age Sex Race OccupationFarms Worth Benjamin Grinage 54 M Mulatto Farmer $2500

The name Thomas Grinage does not appear in the 1860 census for Greene County because he and his family migrated to Canada with Nasa McCurdy Jr.'s family. A branch of the African-American/mulatto Pearl and Fowler families of Greene County are related to the Grinage/McCurdy clan and relocated to Canada also.

In the 1870 census for Jackson Township, Greene County, the name William Grinage, the son of Ruth and Benjamin Grinage, appears as follows: 1870 Jackson Township Age Sex Race Occupation Farms Worth William Grinage 30 M Mulatto farmer $3000 Elizabeth 30 F Mu housekeeper Samanee? 3/12 F Mu Nancy Patterson 8 F Mu in school Solomon Copenhaver 3 M Mu in school

If you also re-examine the 1860 census, you will see that Alpheus, Clark and Elmer are all children of Ruth McCurdy and Benjamin Grinage. The last available census is the 1920 census. The Grinage's listed in that census from Greene

County, Pennsylvania are as follows: 1920 Jackson Township Age Sex Race Occupation Oliver M. From the census information provided, you can see that there were a number of Grinage's who lived in Greene County since the early 1800's. The Grinage family in Greene County, Pennsylvania began with John Grinage (b. in 1775 - d. in 1847). John had at least twelve family members in his household in 1820 that could have been his children; however, there are only three known sons and one daughter: Thomas Grinage, Sr. (b. in 1800); Benjamin Grinage, Sr. (b. ca 1805 - d. in 1866); Nicholas Grinage; and Susannah Grinage. I am not certain, but all evidence suggests that Jonathan Grinage, Sr. was a son of John Grinage, Sr. Relatives of Jonathan Grinage, Sr. acknowledge a connection, but are not

9 certain about the connection. It is true that Jonathan A. Grinage, Jr. was the son of Jonathan Grinage, Sr. Sylvester Grinage, Sr. whose line appears on pages 49-51 is probably a brother to Jonathan, Grinage, Jr.

There are, however, two records of families involving Thomas Grinage, Sr., one of John Grinage, Sr.'s son. The first family listed below is Thomas Grinage, Sr.'s family as it appears in the 1850 census for Greene County, and the second family listed below is the same family who relocated to Canada after the 1850, before thel.860 census and how it appears in the records there: Thomas Grinage, Sr. (b. 1800) Hannah Grinage (b. 1824) Jonathan Grinage (b. 1832) Sarah Grinage (b. 1833) Solomon Grinage (b. 1836) Thomas Grinage, Jr. (b. 1839) Benjamin Grinage (b. 1844) John Grinage (b. 1846) William Grinage (b. 1848) Linley Grinage (b. 1849) Thomas Grinage, Sr. (b. 1814) Hannah J. Grinage (b. IR26) Jonathan Grinage Sarah Grinage Hiram Grinage (b. 1854) James L. Grinage (b. 1859) Samuel Grinage (b. 186 1) John Grinage (b. 1841) Agnes V. Grinage (b. 1869) Joseph Grinage

As you can see, the names in both of these lists are very similar, in that they each consist of nine names and contain some of the same family names; however, the dates of birth of the same individuals are different. The first list has the names Solomon and William Grinage while the second list does not, but has the additional names Hiram, Samuel, Agnes, and Joseph Grinage. The birth date of the Thomas Grinage found in the first list is probably accurate because his will, which is presented on the next page, states he died in 1871, at the age of 70, which means he was born in the year 1800. Additional information has provided more confusion in the actual birth date of many of Thomas Grinage, Sr.'s children as shown in the following 1871 census for Chatham Township, Ontario, Canada: Name Sex A2e Place Born Religion Race Occupation Grinage, Thomas M 57 U. S. W. Met.Af. Farmer Grinage, Hanah F 47 U. S. W. Met. Af. Grinage, Joseph L. M 24 U. S. W. Met. Af. Farmer Grinage, Harem M 17 U. S. W. Met. Af. Grinage, James L. M 12 Ont. W. Met, Af. In the this census, Benjamin Grinage (son of Thomas Grinage, Sr.) is not listed. It is hoped that anyone with information about him or additional information on this branch of the family will share it.

THE GENEALOGY OF AND JOHN GRINAGE 1. Thomas Grinage, Sr. was born in 1800 in Pennsylvania according to the

1850 census; however, his brother Benjamin, who is younger than he, states that his own place of birth was New Jersey in one census year and Maryland in another. The wife of Thomas was (1st), Ruth . They had at least five children together before he married (2nd), Hannah Richardson (b. ca 1826), who was several years younger than he. Thomas and Hannah also had children together. After the death of Thomas's first wife, Ruth, he and his second wife, Hannah, lived in Greene County up until 1850 then settled in Chatham Township, Canada where Thomas died at the age of 70 years. According to Thomas's will which is dated August 21, 1871, Hannah and their son, Joseph Sulley (Sewley) Grinnage were made executrix and executor of his will which reads as follows:

"Wife, Hannah Grinnage all real estate in Chatham Township, for sole use natural life Guardian of children as they do not be 21 years of age. After Hannah's death all real estate afore said to children who may be living in equal proportions and real estate should be attained in the family and if the property should be sold one of my children would purchase property. Son, John Grinnage and Joseph Sewley Grinnage. The amount of $60. to be paid to wife, Hannah, owing to me and Hannah may use it for own use. Son, Jonathan Grinnage, Mich., shall pay to wife Hannah the sum of $4.60 to constitute a portion of my estate. If he should not pay then he is to be excluded from all share of my estate. "

Witnesses: Daniel D. Williston, Dresden Merchant, James Richardson Chatham Township.

Although Thomas had eleven known children between his two wives, Ruth and Hannah, only three

of Thomas Grinage's children are mentioned in his will. The following ancestral information, obtained from the Raleigh Township Museum in North Buxton, Canada, and the WISH Center in Chatham, Ontario, Canada identifies these children in the following manner:
