The Cheriton Players and the Cheriton Village Hall Committee are delighted to welcome you to our joint production, The Great Cheriton Variety Show! We have enjoyed working together to put on this show, something a

bit different from the Players’ usual productions. It has been great fun for us all and importantly is a fundraiser for both organisations.

Around 40 people are involved in putting on this show, onstage, backstage, front of house and of course in the kitchen and bar. Too many to list by name and a good many involved with a Players’ production for the first time. We are hugely grateful for the efforts everyone has put in but I must pick out a few for special mention. First, enormous thanks to Paul Hellard, our Director, who is both a long-standing member of the Players and of the Village Hall Committee and who has worked tirelessly and enthusiastically to put this entire show together, as well as showing off his talents onstage!

Thanks too to Penny Scott and Viv Pain for

producing the fantastic Ploughman’s Suppers – an enormous amount of work; to Simon Scott and David Pain for organising the bar, Sue Herdman for heading up the FoH team and to everyone else who has helped with food, drinks, table service and other FoH duties. Paul has listed stage credits elsewhere in the programme, so it just leaves me to thanks you, our audience, for your support. We hope you enjoy The Great Cheriton Variety Show as much as we have all enjoyed putting it on – we couldn’t do it without you!

The Cheriton Players is a small friendly theatre group always keen to encourage new members to join us onstage, backstage and front of house. If you are interested in joining us, please get in touch through the website www.thecheritonplayers.org.uk or by email to [email protected]

We also hope to see you again at Cheriton Players’ next production, Third Week in August, a comedy by Peter Gordon, which we are putting on in the grounds of The Flowerpots Inn on 10 – 13 June 2015. Tickets will be on sale from April through Ticketsource and details will be on our website soon.

When I was asked by our Chairman, Jan Conway, if I would be prepared to devise a Variety Show to raise much-needed funds for both the Village Hall

and The Players, I was very happy to accept the challenge – as I have extremely fond memories of the many Old Time Music Halls we used to perform ‘way back when’ – in the heady days when the Players staged three performances a year!

Initially, we had visions of an ‘Old Time’ theme, but it quickly became clear

that a Variety Show was actually more appropriate. I did make one proviso though, namely that

it would naturally hinge upon whether or not we could find a suitable Musical Director, given the nature of such a show!

Clearly the Gods were with us – Sue Alexander kindly volunteered to undertake this pivotal role – and who better? A cornerstone of Cheriton Primary School for a great many years, encompassing music, drama and teaching – we could not have wished for a more appropriate or talented MD. As if that wasn’t enough, the Gods continued to smile….with Jenny Cridland offering her organisational skills as Producer, Helena Gomm adding her directing experience with West Meon Theatre as our Drama Director plus Maureen Cheong once again providing her movement and dance skills to fulfil

the role of Choreographer. In quick succession, Julia Kimber offered to be our Wardrobe Mistress, Angela Ledsham stepped up as Stage Manager

and our very own ‘dynamic duo’, Graham Arnott and Jamie Herdman happily agreed to weave their magic once again with their expert sound and lighting. So, within days of the show’s concept, we had achieved an extremely qualified, dedicated and cohesive team and – joy of joys – not a single arm was twisted in the process!

Collaboration has been the key to this production – a fact borne out by the fact that many of our cast and crew are also members of Cheriton Singers, Ropley Dramatic Society, TOADS, ACTS, WMOS, West Meon Theatre

and Chesil Theatre.

I can honestly say that this happy ‘showboat’ has

been a real pleasure to skipper, not only because of the sheer enthusiasm and ‘can do’ attitude of all those taking part - many of whom are new to Cheriton Players and whom we warmly welcome – but also because

of the amazing talent that each and every one has brought to this production. This same ‘can do’ spirit and community involvement also runs through all of our unsung heroes who look after Front of House, Catering and the Bar, which includes members of the Village Hall Committee, Players, supporters, spouses and families - all helping to

create, what I hope you will agree, properly lives up to our promise of ‘a sparkling feast of fun, music and drama!’ Enjoy the show!
