Great Field Trip

Natalie Czegan, a Girl Scout Daisy,attended a fire safety day with otherDaisies from her troop at FreeportVolunteer Fire Department on SaturdayJanuary 16th. As part of the outing, thegirls learned about home fire safety,including having an escape route, smokedetectors, basic first aid and the impor-tance of practiced fire drills. The girlswere able to climb inside the fire trucksand ambulances and touch all the vari-ous gear that firefighters use to keep ussafe and put our fires. Natalie was ableto model some “bunker gear.”

This year is off to an interesting start. I’m not sure what’s crazier, the presidential primaries or theprice of oil! Both seem to be bucking convention. For our businesses, we continue to face a slow

economy and there are no immediate signs of a sustained uptick in the industrial markets. The good news is that Robroy is strong and healthy. Our operational performance and commit-

ment to quality have positioned us to be successful through this economic cycle. Being highly efficientand productive is a competitive advantage. We can offer the best value to our served markets and weneed to capitalize on every opportunity.

I would like to thank all of our associates and partners for their contributions. Even if the economyremains slow, 2016 will be a good year because we’re going to make it a good year! I look forward toseeing you all.

15th at Donatos’s Restaurant in FoxChapel. This event was such a suc-cess last year that HeadquartersAssociates duplicated the venue andenjoyed a delicious meal and pleasantconversation in a private dining roomagain this year. Even the weathercooperated.

A Unique Look at HeadquartersBy Maggie McIlroy

How well do you know your coworkers? Sometimes whenyour job keeps you glued to your computer or talking on thephone, it can be challenging to get to know the person who isin the cubicle next to you.

A business can only be successful if everyone is working hardand remains focused. Luckily, I had the chance to catch every-one in Headquarters on a break and ask them a few questionsto get to know them better, as I have only been at Robroy fora few weeks.

Some of the things I found were interesting. Everyone likesthe same colors and are split 5:4 for green and blue as thefavorite (except for Josh, his is orange). If for every meal youcould only eat one thing for the rest of your life, most peopleopted for either spaghetti and meatballs or chicken, with theoccasional pizza.

But what was more interesting to me was how differenteveryone was, and how cohesively they work together. Ifeveryone could travel to one place and one place only, youwould find the people at Headquarters in every corner of theEarth. Kim would be marveling at the Grand Canyon, Aileenwould be climbing the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Greg would behunting in Alaska, and Jeff would be soaking up the sun in theCaribbean. An ideal day off of work for Rob would be playingguitar with some of the world’s greatest musicians like JohnMayer, but for Josh it would be spent cheering on theSteelers as they win the Superbowl.

No one has the same favorite song, except Aileen and Kimwho would likely share headphones to listen to Adele. No onehas the same favorite book or the same favorite movie. I betyou don’t know many people other than Mike who have readbiographies on almost every single United States President, orsomeone who loves “A Fighting Chance” by Elizabeth Warrenmore than Jean!

If Robroy were to give out concert tickets to everyone inHeadquarters, seven people would want to go a country con-cert and three to a rock concert. Exactly half of the officewould want to go to an amusement park while half wouldrather go to a water park. For the question, “Would you rathergo on a double date with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West orBeyoncé and Jay-Z?” the most common answer was, “Howabout neither?” However, if they weren’t given a choice,everyone except Greg and Randy would rather share a tablewith Beyoncé and Jay-Z.

In school, the majority of peoples’ favorite classes were in thehumanities. I found it to be very interesting that there wasn’ta single business class as a favorite, yet somehow everyoneended up in business. Popular classes were Psychology,Sociology, and Philosophy. A couple law classes also made

the favorites list. Anil’s favorite class was Artificial Intelligencewhich entailed building robots. That sounds fascinating!

Every single person in Headquarters is very talented. Kim is avery mechanical person, and knows how to take apart andreassemble her dryer. Mike used to play the trombone, Joshcan make origami, and Rob can paint and play the guitar.However, there is always a skill set that people dream theycould have. Anil would love to learn how to fly a plane. Jeanwishes to learn how to play the piano and harp like her daugh-ter. Randy wants to play basketball like Kobe!

On Valentine’s Day, every single person would rather receivechocolate than flowers (and I don’t blame them!). Pretty mucheveryone would like to take a night off of kitchen duty and goout to a nice dinner, and come home to enjoy a movie withtheir loved one.

If everyone could hang out for a day with any famous person,dead or alive, there would be a pretty interesting mixture ofpolitical figures, entertainment stars, and sports heroes. Joshwould love to play some baseball with Andrew McCutchen,while Randy would want to race cars with Vin Diesel. BothJeff and Rob would want to learn about the Civil War fromAbe Lincoln himself, while Mike would love to jam out withJohn Lennon. Kim and Aileen would want to talk to politicalleaders like Obama and Colin Powell, and Jean would behappy to read and chat with Elizabeth Warren.

If one extremely lucky office member were to have scoredthe winning $1.5 billion Powerball ticket, most would take themoney and travel the world or donate it to charity. A lot ofpeople would also like to use it to help out their family mem-bers, buy a new house, and get a cool new car. Greg says ifhe won the Powerball, you would “never see him again!”

As for me, my name is Maggie McIlroy, and I’m a high schoolsenior who will be interning for Robroy for the rest of theschool year. Next year, I am hoping to go to school atSouthern Methodist University. My favorite color is pink and Icould watch Breakfast at Tiffany’s over and over and overagain. My favorite book is “Eat, Pray, Love” and I would loveto travel the world someday like Elizabeth Gilbert did. I am afield hockey captain and the oldest sister of three girls. I per-sonally think it would be pretty cool to have dinner with Kimand Kanye and Beyoncé and Jay-Z, but maybe that’s justbecause I’m 18.

Getting to know everyone at Headquarters was pretty fun!Everyone has things in common, but also have vastly differentcharacteristics. This dynamic brings a lot of energy to theoffice. I think it’s awesome that ten people who are all very dif-ferent and unique work so well together. Ask your coworkersquestions, you’d be surprised at the cool things you will learn!

Nathan had fun despite the coldand even managed to catch a fewtrout. The trout were a bit of acuriosity to Nathan. He was notsure what they were and why theywere flopping around on the ice. Allfish were released safely back intothe frozen lake to be caught againanother day.

KDKA Turkey Fund

The KDKA Turkey Fund has pro-vided Thanksgiving dinners for

area neighbors in need for over 34years – holiday meals for more than amillion families. Just $15.00 can givea struggling family the means to gath-er and share a meal with loved ones.In tough times, even people with littleto share show their compassion withfood drives, volunteer hours andfinancial gifts.

Before Thanksgiving,Headquarters Associates collected$545. Robroy matched that for a totalof $1,090 and then PNC Bankmatched that for a grand total of$2,180. PNC supports the KDKATurkey Fund through collections at allPNC branches. They match any dona-tion from $50 to $50,000. KDKA dis-tributes all contributions throughouttheir viewing area, through theGreater Pittsburgh Community FoodBank.

Let’s clarify one thing upfront – NONEof the Headquarters Associates are

Early in February, HeadquartersAssociates participated in a speed datingactivity led by Randy Untalan and JoshMiller. At each table, associates weregiven a sheet of paper, which included predefined questions ranging from “what isyour favorite movie of all time” to “what do you normally check first online.”Maggie McIlroy, Robroy Intern, kept the time with each round lasting approximatelyfour minutes. The questions yielded many different and interesting answers. Whoknew the first thing Greg Czegan checks online is the Delinquency Report?

While nobody will be going on a “second date,” it is safe to say thatHeadquarters Associates now know a little more about one another after thisactivity.

HelpNet announced positive upgrades to their increasing-ly popular monthly online webinars. The webinars have shift-ed to an on-demand format and will offer interactivity.

Starting in January 2016 associates no longer have to reg-ister and make special arrangements to attend the webinarsat a set time. On the third Tuesday of each month, themonthly webinar will be recorded and automatically uploadedto the HelpNet Work Life website. Malicious spam remains a major threat to many organizations. Thesearen’t those annoying marketing emails we’re tired of deleting from our inbox-es all day long. Think of malicious spam as a precursor to phishing, employingsimilar tricks of deception – stealing logos and designs from well-respectedbrands – to trick users into clicking malicious links or downloading infectedfiles.

Malicious spam could even come from an email address spoofed (manipu-lated) to appear as if it came from someone within your organization. One clickof the mouse to open an infected Word document or PDF and you compromiseyour PC.

Malicious spam can deliver just about any type of malware. Cybercriminalsuse spam as a “shotgun” tactic to spread their malware as wide as possible.Often these emails are disguised as shipping confirmation notices, alarmingnotices from banks, tantalizing photos, mortgage scams, fake news alerts andmore. They use anything to raise curiosity and get you to open an email orclick an attachment or link and it only leads to trouble. ��

Always be wary of any email you receive that is out of the ordinary or youdid not request. Spam can look very real, but avoid the temptation to clickwithout thinking. Also, be aware that just because you’re at work and protect-ed by security solutions, malicious spam can still slip through. Best course ofaction, if you think it’s spam, delete it.

Lockheed Martin, a global securitycompany headquartered in

Bethesda, Maryland, employs about126,000 people worldwide. The corpo-ration’s sales from continuing opera-tions reached $45.8 billion in 2010.The U.S. Army awarded LockheedMartin a contract to provide theArmy’s Digital Range Training System(DRTS). This program supports rangemodernization by replacing aging live-fire training infrastructures with mod-ernized, digital instrumentation capabili-ties that record weapons system infor-mation and provide enhanced after-action-review tools. Instrumentationincludes cameras, targetry systemswith audio/visual effects, data record-ing equipment, range control centersand scenario development technology.

The system will provide armored vehi-cle crews with collective gunnery train-ing and qualification.

In 2014, Lockheed Martin foundStahlin Enclosures through a GoogleInternet search. Since that time, theentire Stahlin team has been activelyinvolved in providing excellent cus-tomer service and working diligently tomanufacture a high quality product toaccommodate this highly modifieddesign. The design is one of Stahlin’smost modified products to date withmodifications including the desert sandcolor, special holes and cutouts, abonded-in window, painted with cop-per shielding to prevent any EMI/RFIinterferences with the signal jammersand silk screened text for each con-nector installed.

Roger Schroder, Stahlin’sEngineering Manager, and Doug Hill,Applications Engineer, recently made asite visit to review the first productionorder installed at Fort Stewart,Georgia. The customer was verypleased with the Stahlin products andstated that the water intrusion issueswith the older design have beensolved. They are thankful to have apartner like Stahlin to help provide thebest training experience possible forour military. Stahlin is currently produc-ing another large order for LockheedMartin with yet another order expect-ed in the near future. They plan toreplace the older style systems withthe new design, which is great newsfor future business.

Odyssey of the Mind 2016

Some of you may be familiar with Odyssey of the Mind through HeadquartersBagpiper articles in past issues. Anil Kewalramani’s children participated in

this wonderful program in the Pittsburgh area. Nolan Schroder (12), son of StahlinEngineering Manager, Roger Schroder, participated in regional Odyssey of the Mindcompetitions that took place in Greenville, Michigan on Saturday, February 27,2016.

Nolan and his team tackled Problem 2, “Something Fishy,” in which teamsdesigned and operated a technical solution that simulated multiple fishing styles. AFisher Character worked from a designated area to “catch” three different objectslocated outside of that area. The catch was on the move and included somethingexpected, something unexpected and a new discovery. The performance alsoincluded a change of weather and a humorous character that portrayed a potentialcatch and avoided being caught by the Fisher.

Nolan’s team had dreams of moving on to the state level, but came up a littleshort this year placing 5th in their category. A celebratory lollipop was just onereward that could ease the pain of defeat in this 12-year old until next year.

New Addition

On February 29th, Plant ManagerErik Fassen and his wife, Bobbi,

welcomed a new addition to their family.Monroe Tice Fassen arrived weigh-

ing in at 9 pounds 3 ounces and 23inches in length. Monroe will take hisplace with his big brother, Maverik (4),and big sister, Liliana (2), as the newestmember of the Fassen household.

ed 82 kiddos to a visit from Santa, theGrinch, elves and Mrs. Santa. Each childreceived a pre-Christmas gift and lunchserved by a couple of special elvesalong with eight arts and crafts stations,from which to choose. It was trulyamazing to observe that some of thearts and crafts helpers this year attend-ed past Christmas parties, when theywere little ones. The Children’sChristmas party has become a great tradition at Stahlin.

for Cedarburg High School, receivedan invitation last spring to nominatestudents for the Carnegie Hall NationalHonors Choir. How was CHS chosen?

It was because the school was chosenthree years in a row for the NAMM(National Association of MusicMerchants) Best Schools for MusicAward. The NAMM Foundation is anadvocate for the promotion of musiceducation.

Ms. Hora nominated two of herstudents, Jorgan Jammal, son ofMichael Jammal – Stahlin MarketDevelopment Manager, and JordanMeirhoffer, because she knew theyhad “the strong work ethic necessaryto achieve in the highly competitiveworld of vocal performance.” Thesestudents had to submit a resume anda vocal recording, along with 18,000other applicants from around theworld. They received notification inNovember of 2015 of their accep-tance. From February 4th until the 8thJorgan and Jordan were in New YorkCity. They had been given five compo-sitions to learn on their own and stud-ied with the help of their private voiceinstructors.

This year, Carnegie Hall is celebrat-ing its 125th anniversary as a historicmusic performance venue making thishonor especially prestigious.

Victor Jammal was one of six students from his district to competein a regional spelling bee. He came insecond after twenty rounds of spellingdifficult words of Spanish, German andFrench origin. In the twenty-first roundhe tripped on the word “macramé.”Victor is in 8th grade and will beattending Forest Hills Central HighSchool in the fall of 2016.

Cherie is originally from Overton,Texas and has lived in East Texas all ofher life. Cherie enjoys crafting in herspare time and spending time with herhusband, Jacob, and two children,Maddox (9) and Mackenzie (4).

TruptiMadane begana four-monthinternship withthe ConduitDivision onFebruary 2nd,as a .NETSoftwareEngineer. She isoriginally fromIndia, but nowlives in Tyler, Texas where she is work-ing toward her master’s degree incomputer science and a bachelor’sdegree in information technology atthe University of Texas at Tyler. Prior tomoving to the US, Trupti attendedPune University in India where sheearned a bachelors in computer engi-neering.

Trupti completed an internship as asoftware developer and programmerand has also gained experience work-ing with the Oracle database platform,SQL standards, PL/SQL, Java, cursorsand modules.

Associates brought cannedgoods and other nonperishable

items to donate to the East TexasFood Bank before Thanksgiving 2015.In addition to the nonperishable items,Robroy Industries donated 25 turkeysto help make Thanksgiving a littlebrighter for families in the area. TheEast Texas Food Bank has over 200nonprofit partner agencies throughoutEast Texas that provide food assis-tance to clients in need. This foodbank serves over 252,900 clients annu-ally in 26 counties throughout EastTexas, covering nearly 20,000 squaremiles. In 2015, over 18 million mealswere distributed to hungry East Texans(children, the working poor andseniors). One in four children and onein five adults in East Texas are foodinsecure.

The Upshur County Shares FoodPantry, part of the East Texas FoodBank, sent a note of thanks to Robroywith their sincere appreciation for the95 pounds of food donated by associ-ates. Their pantry received 10 of the

turkeys that Robroy donated. InNovember of 2015, 769 local familiesand a total of 2,212 people benefitedfrom the work of this food pantry.

This year Hannah House MaternityHome, a non-profit maternity home foryoung mothers and mothers to be,received the charitable donations fromthe Texas divisions’ associates. Ms.Darlene Rowlinson accepted the dona-tion for Hanna House and explainedthat the organization is a Christianbased program that offers counseling,

housing, transportation, basic needsand so much more to the women theyserve providing “a new beginning for awoman and her unborn child.” Thedonation totaled $3,592.

Lonnie Schrewsberry presentedSHIELD Scholarships to two youngadults to help them further their edu-cation. A $2,500 scholarship was pre-sented to Ty Morton, Eric Nichols’ The 2015 retirees were honored.

Retirees were recognized, a fewspeeches were presented and gift giving commenced.

Retirements

Retirement parties are a mix of smiles and tears. On one hand, you are sohappy for the retiree, as they start the next chapter of their life, and, on the

other hand, losing a colleague, especially one of long standing, brings a tone of sad-ness to the event. Can you possibly imagine the feelings that filled the ConduitDivision break room on December 31, 2015, as the associates attempted to cele-brate the retirement of four of their number?

Jerry Davis began his Robroy career as a Production Associate 27 years ago.During that time he served the Company well and ended his career as a ProductionSupervisor. Over the years, Jerry’s daughters have interned at the Company andstories were shared in the Bagpiper about the Davis’ chickens, graduations and,most recently, a wedding.

Barbara Sanders has served the Company since 1996 in the position ofProduction Associate. Her dedication and hard work serve as wonderful examplesto her colleagues.

The past 19 years have felt the unmistakable presence of Donna Waterstraat atthe Conduit Division, always available to lend a hand in capacities that go farbeyond her everyday duties as Operations Manager.

With 17 years of service Carlean Turner’s pretty face will be missed atCompany events and in the accounting office of the Conduit Division. She couldkick-up her heels at the Company Christmas parties and number crunch with thebest of them in the Accounting Department.

Best wishes are extended to each of these fine individuals and may they eachexperience a very rewarding retirement.

RECIPE

Raspberry Fudge Mocha Mousse Trifle

1 jar (12 oz.) red raspberry preserves – divided1 ½ cups red raspberries, washed and drained1 jar (12 oz.) hot fudge topping – divided¼ cup strong brewed coffee2 (8 oz) containers frozen whipped topping, thawed1 (10 oz.) prepared angel food cake cut into 1” cubes

COMBINE ¾ cup preserves and raspberries in a smallbowl – set aside. Reserve 5 raspberries for garnish. PLACE 2 tablespoons of hot fudge topping in smallresealable plastic bag for drizzling. STIR strong-brewed coffee into remaining hot fudge in alarge bowl until blended. Fold in one container ofwhipped topping to make mousse – set aside. STIR remaining container of whipped topping until fluffy.LAYER half of the cake cubes in a trifle bowl or 2 ½ to3-quart glass bowl. Spread on half of the fudge mousseand half of the plain whipped topping. Spoon all of theberries evenly over the topping. Top with a layer ofremaining cake cubes and another layer of fudgemousse.SPOON dollops of remaining whipped topping over thecenter of the trifle. MICROWAVE remaining preserves on high for 10seconds. Stir until smooth. DRIZZLE over topping and fudge mousse. Microwavereserved hot fudge topping on high for 5 seconds. Cut asmall corner off the bag. DRIZZLE over top of trifle. Top with reservedraspberries.CHILL 1 hour before serving.
