Sizzling sum- mer temperatures can make cooking very unpleasant. After all, who wants to heat up the house with an oven when the air conditioning is struggling just to keep indoor temper- atures manageable? However, we must feed our families and ourselves. So after everyone has had their fill of salads and no-bake meals, here are five ways to cook while minimiz- ing heat output. 1. Use the toaster oven. There are some things like bread, cookies, and casseroles that must be baked using an oven. To mini- mize the amount of energy consumed and heat generated, bake with a toaster oven. Use smaller baking dishes, and be prepared for slight changes in cooking time and temperature. Before long, you will know exactly how to cook your favorite things in a toaster oven without heating up the house! 2. Reduce boiling time. When boiling pas- ta or vegetables, most recipes tell you to boil the food until it is completely done. However, you can drastically cut down on the amount of heat your stove puts out by turning off the stove before the food is fully cooked. Pasta and vegetables will continue cooking in the warm water for quite some time even when no additional heat is applied. Just remember to keep a lid on the pot to keep the heat contained. 3. Skip the preheating. Almost all baked recipes tell you to preheat the oven. What a waste! Instead, just pop your creation in the oven as you turn it on. When it is al- most finished cooking, turn the oven off. The inside of the oven will stay very hot for quite some time-as long as you don't open the oven door. By being very conservative about oven usage, sometimes you may only have to use half as much energy as you normally would. This translates to a cooler kitchen and a more comfortable cook! 4. Use a crock pot. Crock pots (some call them "slow cookers") are the most energy efficient cooking appliances. Not only are they good for wintertime soups and chili, but they can also be used in the summer to cook an entire meal of chicken and vegeta- bles, or to make a great dip for your out- door party. Just be sure to plan your meal ahead of time, because crock pot cooking does take several hours. 5. Grill! Lastly, the best way to keep cool in the kitchen is just like that old saying says-get out of it! Grilling is a great way to cook meats and vegetables when you just can't stand to heat up the kitchen at all. You can make kabobs, burgers, steaks, fish, or use a grill basket to make a medley of grilled summer vegetables. Another popular grilling trick is to put entire ears of corn on the grill-husks and all! Just re- member to soak the corn for about 15 min in a bowl of water to make sure that the husks don't dry out and catch fire. There's an old saying that perfectly sums up summer cooking: "If you can't stand the heat-get out of the kitchen!" Sizzling sum-mer temperatures can make cooking very unpleasant. FAMOUS WORDS

Interesting Facts You Never Knew

“Thinking: the talking of the

soul with itself.”

- Plato

Did you know . . . Domestic cats dislike citrus scents. Did you know . . . Instant coffee was invented in 1901. Did you know . . . Jamaica has 120 rivers. Did you know . . . There is no butter in buttermilk. Did you know . . . A crocodile can’t stick out its tongue.

Summer will be here soon enough, and your kids will be thrilled with being out of school and playing outside. Well, at least for a few days anyway. Once the newness of summer has worn off and the reality of boredom sinks in, your once happy campers can turn into 'mom I'm bored' monsters. What's a parent to do to help ease the pain of 'nothing to do'? Planning summer craft projects in advance is an idea that smart parents may make use of. Who knows, perhaps the kiddos will even learn a thing or two at the same time. Since the weather is per-fect for getting out and exploring nature, kids can find objects like seeds, leaves, grass, flowers and other items to use in making a nature collage. All they have to do is glue the found craft bits onto a stiff piece of cardboard. They can add any other items they want to make the collage colorful and interesting. Spraying the collage with paint can add color and variety too. How about spraying some glue on and then sprinkling glitter on the collage? Another idea for using the nature items they collect is to arrange dried flowers into special arrangements for mom. Naturally, if kids collect wild flowers they'll need a wonderful homemade vase to arrange them in. Making a sim-ple vase is a great summer craft idea. Kids can make a nice, simple vase from a recycled tin can. Soup cans and small coffee cans work well for home-made vases. The best tin cans have smooth outsides and aren't too wide. Make sure you trim off any sharp points or edges that may still be on the can opening. Kids can cut a piece of colorful construction paper to fit around the outside of the can and then glue it to the can after they've decorat-ed it in anyway they wish. Stickers,

markers, crayons, paint, glue and glit-ter...the list goes on. A great idea for decorating the vase is by drawing a wonderful summer scene on the con-struction paper. They can also add their name, glue dried pasta, beans or seeds on the paper. Let it all dry well before gluing to the can. However they may want to decorate their vase is up to them. All that's left is adding some water and flowers or their dried wild-flowers.

Kids can make con-tainers and vases from empty jars as well. Canning jars make great vases, but any old recycled jar works well. Make sure to clean it really well. Let the kiddos get their hands wet by cleaning the jars them-selves. After the jar is dry, add pretty ribbon

around the mouth. Kids will love painting on the glass jar and maybe adding glitter, beads and buttons too. Tin can and glass jar vases have multi-ple uses other than containers for flow-ers. Kids can put in pencils, pens and markers or any small item they want to put add. These are just a few basic and simple craft ideas that you can help your kids make this summer. There are literally boundless ideas for summer kid craft-ing. You can spend some fun time with your children while preventing the boredom monster from showing itself too soon. Not only will you and your kids have fun, but you'll have some adorable items to display in your home or give as gifts to family and friends. Your kids can learn some new crafting skills and have the satisfaction of accomplishment at the same time. Stay cool and happy crafting this sum-mer!
