Lent lures us to renew our discipline of reflection, to shed the old snakeskin and climb slowly from the base- ment of our spirits to uncover new consciousness, and find more focused roots to celebrate our faith-building path. The power of the labyrinth is revealed in our experi- ence of it. That embodiment of spirit is the prayerful walking around its circuits, quieting the mind, focusing on a singular path toward the center rosette and back out again on the same path. The process is a release, reflection, renewal, reunit- ing with the world, and a remembering the experi- ence–possibly one of heal- ing, revelation, transformation, deeper contemplation, gratitude, or forgiveness. Or even nothing in particular other than a quiet, structured walk. Emmanuel’s labyrinth in the undercroft is copied from the 13th century labyrinth design on the floor of the Chartres Cathedral in France, a holy place of many pilgrimage studies of mine and of thousands of other pilgrims over 800 years. What better way to renew spiritual practice than through the vehicle of the ancient labyrinth, a place for contemplative walking and embodying the spirit in anticipation of the mystery of the coming Christ and the omniscient Divine. Walks are all open to the public. By Barrie GibbyThe Lenten season offers a time to begin a new journey–again. Lent lures us to renew our discipline of reflection, to shed the old snakeskin and climb slowly from the base-ment of our spirits to uncover new consciousness, and find more focused roots to celebrate our faith-building path. The power of the labyrinth is revealed in our experi-ence of it. That embodiment of spirit is the prayerful walking around its circuits, quieting the mind, focusing

on a singular path toward the center rosette and back out again on the same path. The process is a release, reflection, renewal, reunit-ing with the world, and a remembering the experi-ence–possibly one of heal-

ing, revelation, transformation, deeper contemplation, gratitude, or forgiveness. Feel free to invite others to join you on your journey:

SUNDAY MORNINGS AT 9:30 a.m.“What Wondrous Love–Holy Week in Word and Art”

If you enjoyed the Adult Study, “A Thrill of Hope,” led by Bill Scarpaci and Bob Hillenbrand, you will enjoy this study that again features the masterpiece illustrations of John August Swanson. Each study focuses on a piece of art and a particular biblical passage. Bill will again bring in additional art and lead us in comparing the works of the artists as well as recognizing some of the techniques the artists used. Bob will facilitate our exploration of the biblical texts. Get your Sunday cup of coffee and join us at the table.

WEDNESDAY LENTEN SOUP & STUDY“Embracing a Life of Meaning–Kathleen Norris on Discovering What Matters”

Kathleen Norris, an award-winning poet, writer and au-thor provides a unique viewpoint of “what matters most” in these five sessions. “Belief Matters: Why does belief matter? What is the core message of what we believe–creeds or commitment? The Bible Matters: How is the Bible’s story reflected in our daily lives? What is it about the Bible that always seems to address our present mo-ment? Community Matters: In community, individualism and imperfection meet grace and acceptance. Place Mat-ters: In what ways is faith set within the physical space of home, church, land and people? We Matter: What does it mean to remain in God’s image and counter our selfish-ness by embracing the world and its needs?” Join us at noon for a light lunch. Come early and participate in Stations of the Cross and Holy Eucharist at 11:30 a.m. Sign-up sheets for providing soup and sandwiches will be on the bulletin board as you enter the parish hall–please sign up if you are able to help.

Safekeeping In The Parking Lot– While You Aren’t There!Recently our neighborhood has had an increase in car break-ins, most frequently occurring on Sunday morn-ings in church parking lots. Thieves break a window and take anything that looks of value. Police Sergeant David Hooks, a member of Emmanuel, called to talk with me about the break-ins because he learned that two cars in our parking lot had been broken into. He was especially frustrated because he had been patrolling the parking lots of our downtown churches when he was called to the east side of town because of a death. It seems that during the time he was gone, the break-ins occurred. David’s recommendation to all of us is to keep noth-ing visible in our cars. He was quite sure that in every instance of robbery, something of interest was visible to the thieves. We also had an instance of a coat being taken from our narthex coat rack. This did not appear to be ac-cidental, and we are following up on it. Although this happens very infrequently, it has happened in the past. A reminder to all: do not leave your car keys or anything of value in your coat pockets – and, preferably, take your coat with you into church. We are privileged to minister in an urban area. The promise of this opportunity (like all promises) often comes with a risk/cost. But, there are ways we can reduce these risks. Recent update: The police, in their attempt to catch the thief, will provide Sunday surveillance in our lot and on the street.

Shrove Tuesday: Do You Know These Fun Facts?

By Amy GustafsonMost of us are familiar with our parish’s tradition of holding a “Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper” the evening before Ash Wednesday, which is hosted by our Youth Group. (This the first shameless plug, please attend on 2/13 at 5:30 p.m. and donate generously to support their mission work!) In fact, this is not only a tradition in our parish, and those around the country, but also in many other places in the world. But do you know about tradi-tions and their origins in England? Here are some fun facts, taken from the Internet - always a reliable resource!

Shrove Tuesday used to be celebrated as a half-day holiday and a church bell, called the “Shriving Bell,” was rung to signal the start of the holiday and to call

people to church to confess their sins. The church bell was rung at eleven o’clock in the morning as a reminder to housewives to prepare their pancake bat-ter. The bell became known as the “Pancake Bell.”

Pancake races are held in many places (including in our undercroft!) on Shrove Tuesday. The most famous pancake race takes place at Olney in England. According to tradition, in 1445, a woman in Olney heard the shriving bell while she was making pan-cakes and ran to the church in her apron, still clutch-ing her frying pan. Stemming from this incident, the pancake races were born. Now, competitors have to be local housewives and they must wear an apron and a hat or scarf. A woman must run the 375 meter course, flip her pancake in her pan three times and arrive at the church. The winner serves her pancake to the bell ringer, receives a kiss from him and a prayer book from the vicar. Aren’t you glad we don’t make you run 375 meters in our games?

At the famous Westminster School in London, a verger from Westminster Abbey leads boys into the playground where the school cook tosses a huge pancake over a five-meter high bar, and whichever boy catches the largest piece receives a cash prize from the Dean. (Pancake Supper plug number two: Bring friends and extended family to support the Youth Group!)

Can’t make it? Don’t forget to make your donation to support Youth Group mission work!

In Scarborough, everyone assembles on the prom-enade to skip. Long ropes are stretched across the road, and ten or more people may be found skipping on one rope!

The world’s oldest, largest, longest and craziest football game in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, starts on Shrove Tuesday and is played over two days, involv-ing thousands of players. The goals are three miles apart, is played with a hand-painted cork-filled ball, and there are only a few rules.

Shrove Tuesday used to be a great day for cock-fight-ing in England, introduced to Britain by the Romans. Also involving fowl, in the Midlands, the first pancake was given to the chickens to ensure their fertility.

It was also believed that the first three pancakes cooked were sacred, and were each marked with a cross and sprinkled with salt before being set aside to ward off evil. (Pancake Supper plug number three: We will do this at our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Sup-per to protect our hoped for many attendees. Don’t you want some protection?!)

Emmanuel GuildEaster Baskets ProjectBy Trish RooneyEmmanuel Guild is coordinating an Easter basket project for the children in Shelter Care families. There are approximately 65 children, ranging in age from infants to teens, who will receive Easter baskets thanks to the generosity of the Emmanuel congregation. Items for the baskets will be collected in the undercroft on March 3, 10, and 17. The ladies from the Guild will gather to pack the baskets and have them ready for Shelter Care

Staff to deliver the week before Easter. The baskets were filled to overflowing last year with wonderful gifts for all ages of children–books, small stuffed animals, games, toys and candy for the younger kids; and gift cards, personal care items, jewelry, word search puzzles, card games, and flavored bottles of water for the older kids. Think of the things that your children, grandchildren, or nieces and nephews enjoy receiving and chances are good that we’ll have a child in a Shelter Care family who would enjoy that too! If you have any questions about the Easter Baskets project, please contact Rosa Birnbaum or Trish Rooney.

Thank You from the Jubilee Center

By Robert ParkerThe staff and members of the Jubilee Center would like to thank the parishioners of Emmanuel Episcopal for the gift cards that were purchased at Christmas. The gift cards were valued at $10.00 so no one received any more than anyone else. Hence equity was achieved.
