The Good News

Dad’s and Grad’s Sunday was wonderful. The Service was good, the pews were full, worship time was fulfilling. Then comes the best part!! STRAW-BERRY SHORTCAKE BABY!!! Ethel Barber and her helpers did a wonderful job of putting together all the ingredients that make Strawberry Shortcake so delicious. I, for one, am very appreciative of the effort put forth and the delicious food that comes out of that effort. Thank you Ethel! Also happening at the beginning of June, was Oz Fest. Julie Reals spearheaded the Food Tent and as always, did a masterful job, thank you Julie. Sue Gerling was selling raffle tickets and Judy Montgomery was selling our Cookbooks and Mugs. Bob Olmstead, Dorothy Saunders, Jim Montgomery, Amy Randall and Judy Olmsted were all helping out. Thank you to Gerry Weisbrod for keeping track of Clayton, so I could park cars. And let’s not forget Father Grover and Thomas the Tank!! Thank you for braving the heat and sharing your train with any children that happened by. That was awesome of you and truly appreciated. Meanwhile, down at the Park, Tania Mousaw was busy selling wares. Helping her was Gini Smith, Rob-erta and Bob Kincaid. As always, Bob’s creations of Oz Characters, sold quite well. Thank you all for what you do!! I sincerely hope I did not over-look anyone, and if I did, my sincerest apologies. While these moments of fellowship are a wonderful testament of the spirit of St. Paul’s, I want to take a moment to explore the purpose of a church. While this thought process could go for any church, I am specifically think-ing of St. Paul’s. Why are we here? We have a 150 year history, which is wonderful, inspir-ing even. But, why are we here? The easy answer is to worship in a corpo-rate manner. And we do that!!! Every Sunday, even without a Priest, we gather together and listen to the lessons and either a sermon from Father Grover or a Meditation presented by our Lay Leaders. We sing hymns, say prayers and try to grow as Christ’s followers. Christ’s followers. What does that mean? Does that mean, we sit in the comfort of our pews (I know, not so comfortable) and truly believe we are

How you can help:

Buy or take a kit and fill it with supplies on list

Buy any school kit items and put in container labeled “For School Items”

If you are unable to shop, and wish to help out, make a check out to St. Paul’s and on the memo line put: School Kit Donation. Cash donations are welcome also; just mark the envelope School Kit Donation, so we know what the money is for.

If anyone wishes to help out with shopping for supplies, let Ethel Barber know. Parents, this is a great way to get the kids involved!!

Ethel will be taking the School Kits to the Food Pantry by August 7, 2016. Items required for the kits:

New Business: Donation from the Kincaid/Chappell family in memory of Keith Chappell. Discussion on how to proceed and ideas were shared. Discussion of possibility of having a Pia-nist for some of the services in June. Robin will contact and confirm. Hanging sign needs to be replaced, the old one fell down and is not repairable. A motion was made and seconded to authorize Robin to order a new sign. St. Mary Mission from Pennsylvania will be in the area May 31st /June 1st, to pick up donations of items not being utilized that other churches can utilize. At the recommendation of the Finance Commit-tee, the Vestry voted to move $3000 from the Checking account to the Savings account. Under Committee Reports, (B&G) Nothing new to report. (Communication) Nothing new to report. (Education) Nothing new to report. (Fellowship) July 17th (note: changed to July 31st) will be the Parish Picnic. Father’s Day will be Strawberry Shortcake to honor Dad’s and Grad’s. Tania will be looking for volunteers. Throughout the summer, we will have a Bottle and Can Drive. Dates to follow. Tag sale September 10th – all rented space this year. Booth fee to be $12.00 outside and $15.00 inside. (Finance) Finance Committee Meeting held May 12, 2016: reports reviewed, petty cash added to income page and reports balance with bank. New expense form is helping to manage payment requests. (Pastoral Care) Usual cards sent. Plant sent to Michelle Rapp (death of grandfather) and stuffed monkey to Elyza Judd (tonsillectomy). College Graduates to be rec-ognized. Mugs sent to former Clergy and working with those that wish a book. (Worship) Nothing new to re-port. Old Business: Sacred sites – church open for visitors on May 21st – Robin Weisbrod and Sue Gerling will come down and welcome visitors. Set up table with mugs, cook books and calendars to sell. Transitional consultant asked Vestry to determine what God calls our church to do. Deacon Shelly Banner will meet with Vestry on Sunday, May 22nd . Vestry agrees that we need to focus on what we have to offer to our community; giving is key to our survival - spiritually and physically (as a church). Review of Jump Start workshop that some Vestry mem-bers attended in April. Wonderful workshop and provid-ed everyone a lot to think about:

Assess what your church can afford or not afford – short term and long term.

Determine what your “sacred cows” are within the church. What can change; what needs to stay the same.

We will be conducting an Energy Audit to determine cost savings.

Determine what your assets are utilize your church in creative community ways.

Advertise use of parish hall and see what may come out of it in terms of new membership and/or dona-tions.

Last month, we showed you how our Parish Type was calculated, this month, we will show what it would cost to have a Full Time Priest. This is also sent by the Diocese, so everyone

is on the same page.

Compensation for less than fulltime clergy shall be calculated by a factor of the percentage for a full-time cleric.

Minimum Cash Compensation for Full-time:

Type I – minimum $34,175

Type II – minimum $39,870

Type III – minimum $45,560

Type IV – minimum $52,260

50% Time- minimum $17,087

Housing Allowance or Rectory Value - to be determined by parish

Plus Housing Equity Allowance if living in Rectory

Social Security Allowance—7.65% of cash & housing

*to be given to clergy as cash -- clergy are considered self-employed by the IRS. The Social Security/Medicare tax for clergy is not withheld from the paycheck, but must be paid by the clergy who is responsible for calculat-ing and submitting the proper tax to the IRS.

Pension Premium (18% of cash, Social Security, and housing) 18%

Health Insurance - Diocesan Standard Plan

(cost: approximately $8,000 for individual; $20,000 family plan)

Clergy hired before 1/1/16: actual cost (individual, 2 person, or family coverage). Clergy hired on or after 1/1/16: actual cost for individual coverage, 75% of the additional cost for 2-person or family cover-age. Participation in the Denominational Health Insurance plan as required by The Episcopal Church. If cleric is already covered under a spouse’s plan, the cleric and congregation can negotiate an equitable amount of money to be given in lieu of health insurance.

Dental Insurance – Full cost paid by cleric.

One month annual paid vacation – (4 weeks including 5 Sundays).

Sabbatical leave of 3 months after 6 years of service

Professional Development Leave

Earned at the rate of two weeks per year, including one Sunday.

Reimbursement for tolls, parking fees and mileage at current IRS rate.

*mileage from the clergy person’s home to the church office is not a reimbursable expense.

Workers’ Compensation – usually covered in the parish’s policy.

Robin’s Message — Continued followers. Being a follower of Christ is not at all about comfort, so maybe the pews help with that. Not so long ago, there was a “Christian” trend, maybe some of you recall it, where the popular thing was to say, “What Would Jesus Do?” Kids, would wear wristbands with WWJD as a re-minder to be more Christ like. Jesus gave us some idea of what he wanted, he walked with the poor, the unclean (or the horribly sick), the unchurched. He treated all as loved members of his family. He never questioned sharing, EVER. Can we, as Christians, as members of St. Paul’s say the same thing? Are we afraid of those we don’t share a history with? Do we share – time, talent, money? Sometimes, and sometimes I hear we can’t give away the Church, we need to take care of us first. Strange, I don’t recall hearing, “take care of your own first, then the poor, the ill, etc.” anywhere in the Gospel. I recall hearing, “Love your neighbor….” Nothing I am saying here is new. This has been preached from the pulpit by many a priest. Why does it fall on deaf ears, year after year? Yes, we do much for a small church and yes, we can do much more. Dearest Jesus, as we struggle with the day to day reality of an world full of cynics and critics, please help us to get past all the negative voices and in the still, hear the voice of our Father, and yours.
