St. Paul ’s Episcopal Church Chittenango , New York

My dear friends,

What a glorious Eastertide! I know my

spirits are lifted by all the signs of spring that we

are seeing all around us. Haven’t the daffodils been

just splendid this year! Such a nice gift from our

Sunday School children! The flowering of the

earth draws my heart to the wonder of resurrection, of new possibilities.

As most of you know, we have just welcomed to earth our newest

grand child, Juniper Clare Testa. What joy to greet this new little

person! I have watched a transformation in my daughter as the mother

that was within her heart emerged and was revealed to us. Such hope,

such joy - such adjustment!

Jesus was transformed in his death and resurrection. In the post-

resurrection stories we have been hearing in our worship, the disciples

were apt not to recognize him by appearance alone. But they recognized

Jesus in his actions.

Easter calls us to that kind of transformation as well. The

disciples had been followers of Jesus - sometimes strong, sometimes

confused, sometimes hapless. But Jesus came to them, satisfied their

doubts, revealed himself in the breaking of the bread, and they knew that

he lived on! Jesus breathed the Holy Spirit upon them and called them

into action. He charged them with continuing his ministry.

Like the disciples, we are called to feel this fire of the Holy Spirit

to spread the good news of the new covenant that Jesus announced. We

will renew our commitment to live into our call from Christ in our own ways

according to our gifts and talents. We are called as individuals and we are

called as a community of faith to do and be what God intends for us.

May this Eastertide be a time of listening for God in both old and

new ways and responding with action. May we all find renewed energy and

enthusiasm in our faithful response to our loving God. May this spring be

a time when we allow the seeds of possibility within us to flower and grow.

May we as a community hear our call into the future as faithful and

beloved children of God. Faithfully,

The Vestry will give a short update on the financial health of the parish. Please come with questions or concerns you have about any aspect of life at St. Paul’s.

Church growth is an ever popular topic especially in the mainline denominations. Most congregations are shrinking or barely holding their own. St. Paul’s is no exception. People move out of area, seek something different, or drop out altogether. We have a challenge. And we have a lot of potential here. We know that people have a choice of whether or not to go to church on Sunday. Our society sometimes seems against us with our trends to increasingly busy schedules. But, when you want to go to church, how do we decide where to go? Many have never been part of a church community. Most people who come to the Episcopal Church, come because someone they know invited them. New people in a community used to seek out a church - not so much any more. Sometimes they come because the Holy Spirit stirs up a little something in their hearts. Still more come during a time of crisis. So where do they go? The church of their childhood? Many people have never had a regular church. They are most apt to go to a church about which they have heard good thing; someone has shared his or her excitement. Once they walk in the doors—what then? Why do people who visit a church come back? If their experience was not pleasant, they don’t return. How welcoming is our church to a visitor? How easy is it to find us? To know where to park? To find the restrooms? To have their questions answered? Let’s think about this over the next few weeks and jot down our ideas and observations:

♦ What are we doing right? Because I think we do a lot of things right.

♦ What could we improve?

♦ How can we make that first and second visit positive?

♦ What can I do from the pew?

♦ What does the priest need to do?

♦ What would I like to happen when I visit a place?

Being comfortable in the Episcopal Church depends a lot on “insider” knowledge like how to use our multiple books, when and why we sit, stand, kneel; why we do what we do. How we can make that first visit easier on a visitor. What are we doing that works well? What are we doing that does not help? Once a person returns, what are we doing to help them become comfortable within the community? If you would like to be part of the solution - let us know. We will hear more about this as time goes on. Please give your thoughts to a Vestry person or Mother Kathlyn.

Does our Church want to grow?

I am delighted to report that my husband’s recovery is going smoothly. Once again, our hearts are full of gratitude for all the prayers and well wishes from the people of St. Paul’s.

I am equally delighted to report that Judy Montgomery is back and ready to resume her Sr. Warden position. So happy to have you back!

Thank you, Judy, for leading our Stations of the Cross Service in Holy Week. Thanks to Robin Weisbrod who stepped up to the plate during a busy time while both Judy and I have been out of commission. It has been a blessing to be able to depend on her leadership and everyone’s faithful work in the interim! Thank you, Robin for leading worship on Good Friday as we dashed off to Maryland for the baby. Thanks to Father Joe Williams for celebrating our Easter Eucharist services this year. I have heard so many nice comments. It was a blessing for the parish and for me. Thank you to Jay Stark, Fran Abriola and Dan Rapp for leading us in a Seder Meal and greater appreciation of Christianity’s Judaic roots. Thanks to all who helped with food and arrangements! Special thanks to Elizabeth Kay and the members of our Choir for their extra work through Lent and Easter. Thank you for sharing your gifts with us.

These are lyrics from a lovely hymn about doing ministry to and for others - often in non-traditional ways. Here at St. Paul’s, we have may opportunities to love and serve the Lord by taking care of this church of God and the people who come here. We are currently in need of many helpful hands in several areas. Here are some ideas big and small, geared to special talents or no particular talent at all. We all serve God in our own ways. Pick one or two that suit your gifts. “Many hands make light work,” is a saying that is very real in a church community. One cold December afternoon, a young woman knocked on the door of our church. She said she had tried all the other churches in the area and they were locked. However, Jim Montgomery was at church that day doing some work. He welcomed her in and invited her back for the Christmas Eve worship the next evening. She came to church and found a good and safe place and much more. We knew her then by her “American name” Sophia then. Later we learned that her real Chinese name is Yulan Feng. Many people at St. Paul’s reached out to her and she found here her first friends in America. She studied our faith tradition and was eventually baptized here at St. Paul’s. On April 16, I attended the Induction Ceremony for the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society at SUNY Oswego. Yulan is an MBA candidate and qualified by earning and maintaining a GPA of over 3.91. Beta Gamma Sigma is an international honor society that provides the highest recognition a business student anywhere in the world can receive in a baccalaureate or graduate program at a school accredited by the AACSB. Congratulations Yulan!- this is a great achievement. I was struck by the values represented in the honor society. It is about much more than good grades. I think these values are to be valued by all of us. Beta is the initial letter of the Greek word Bebaeos which signifies honor. HonorHonorHonorHonor is personal integrity and excellence of character. It is an enduring quality found in all persons who deserve to lead others. Gamma is the first letter of the Greek word Gnosis which means wisdom. Wisdom is knowledge tested by experience and tempered by discerning judgment. It abhors prejudice, it insists upon freedom of thought and expression. Sigma is the first letter of the Greek word Spoude which means earnestness. Earnestness is enthusiasm measured by achievement, disciplined by reason and ennobled by sincerity. It is that dynamic quality which is essential for all great achievement.

Congratulations Yulan!Congratulations Yulan!Congratulations Yulan!Congratulations Yulan!

This is our traditional time to thoroughly clean the church both inside and outside. We especially have landscaping and grounds clean up to do this year. If you plan to help, God will be happy to see you for Sunday service dressed in your jeans and work shirts! Work can be a prayer too. We look forward to “many hands making light work.”

Our local Food Pantry has been blessed with another kind person who donates bread on a fairly regular basis. Because they also have great need for butter/margarine and eggs, we decided to expand our “Bread Sunday” to include a dozen eggs, package of butter/margarine or bread/muffins/bagels. The cost of one dozen eggs or a package of butter is the same as a loaf of bread, so there is no additional expense to either item. We are grateful for everyone’s support.

Dining for Women Thursday, June 7 — Evening Meal, Time TBA Place: St. John’s Episcopal Church, Oneida

Gloria Wilkins and friends in Oneida are beginning a Dining for Women chapter. We would like

to invite women of all ages, faiths, and interests to this first potluck meeting. What is this organization? What is this organization? What is this organization? What is this organization? Dining for WomenDining for WomenDining for WomenDining for Women, a nonprofit national giving circle, with over 150 registered chapters, empowers women living in extreme poverty by funding programs fostering good health, education and economic self-sufficiency andandandand cultivates educational dinner circles inspiring individuals to make a profound difference through the power of collective giving. Chapter members meet for dinner in someone’s home or a church or community common area rather than at a restaurant, and donate the money they would have spent dining out to international programs. Dining for Women Dining for Women Dining for Women Dining for Women is dedicated to empowering women living in the developing world to become healthy and economically self-sufficient. We believe that through education, our members become agents of change, working together to alter the face of world poverty. The power of collective giving allows each of us to make a more substantial difference in the world than we could do individually, changing the lives of women in some of the poorest countries. Dining for Women shares Nicholas Kristof’s belief that, “Women aren’t the problem but the solution. The plight of girls is no more a tragedy than an opportunity.” Please consider joining us on June 7th. For more information check out the website www.diningforwomen.org , or contact Gloria at 363-6065 or [email protected].

I was walking along "LIFE'S HIGHWAY" a long time ago. One day I saw a sign that read "Heaven's Grocery Store.” As I got a little closer the door came open wide. There was a host of Angels standing everywhere. One handed me a basket and said, "My Child, shop with care." Everything a Christian needed was in that grocery store, and all you couldn't carry, you could come back the next day for more. First, I got some PATIENCE. LOVE was in the same row. Farther down was UNDERSTANDING, something you need everywhere you go. I got a box or two of WISDOM, and a bag or two of FAITH. I just couldn’t miss the HOLY GHOST, for it was all over the place. I stopped for STRENGTH and COURAGE to help

me run this race. Though my basket was nearly full, I remembered I needed GRACE. I didn't forget SALVATION for that was free. So I tried to get enough for both you and me. Then I started up the aisle, I saw PRAYER and I just had to put it in, for I knew when I stepped outside I would run right into Sin. PEACE and JOY were plentiful; they were on the last shelf. SONG and PRAISE were hanging near, so I just helped myself. Then I said to the Angel "How much do I owe?" He just smiled and said "JUST TAKE THEM EVERYWHERE YOU GO". Again, I asked the Angel, "How much do I really owe?" Still smiling he said "MY CHILD, JESUS PAID YOUR BILL LONG AGO." —Ron DeMarco & Friend
